Growth Through Dedication To Our Partners in Education, Last year, the Indian River State College Foundation provided scholarships to 2,300 students. These young people will go on to become more responsible citizens, more valuable employees, and more inspirational leaders. Education is the cornerstone for success in all societies. At Indian River State College (IRSC), we are dedicated to opening the doors to any student who has the drive and determination to succeed in college. We welcome your partnership in our mission, whether it is through financial gifts, with service as volunteers, or by sharing your special talents. If we work together, the possibilities are endless. Give today so that together we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of our students. Sincerely, Ann L. Decker, Executive Director IRSC Foundation Dr. Edwin R. DePriest Dedication to Students IRSC’s halls are filled with students from all walks of life. Many are recent high-school graduates, some are parents with young families, and some are older adults returning to the classroom following changes in their job situations. Regardless of their backgrounds, all IRSC students share a common bond – they want to achieve more in their lives through education. At the IRSC Foundation, our role is to provide resources to help students succeed. We think of ourselves as their partners --- we provide scholarships and they devote themselves to their studies. As simple as this may sound, sometimes students must overcome severe obstacles in order to attend college. They may need day care for their children, gas for their cars, money for books, or face other challenges. In addition to their family and financial responsibilities, most IRSC students work full or part-time, juggling their work and class schedules to make everything fit. Some have to cut back on their work schedules in order to continue their classes, or take fewer classes to keep their jobs. And yet, these students succeed. They study while their children nap, they dart to class after work, and they stay up late cramming for finals. They cross the stage at Commencement with huge smiles on their faces, beaming with pride and hope for the future. In fact, more than ever, students need help to attend college. During 2012, we received 6,543 completed scholarship applications, an increase of 7% from the previous year. And while we were able to assist 35% of these students, there is still a large unmet need. “Receiving a scholarship from IRSC has made it possible for me to be one step closer in achieving my goals. It has given me the opportunity to continue my education and expand my knowledge through the field of nursing.” Felissa Garcia, IRSC Junior pursuing B.A. in Nursing Your support is crucial to help students achieve their educational dreams. We have two different types of scholarship programs: IRSC Student Scholarships and Take Stock in Children Scholarships. You don’t have to be wealthy to help students. For as little as $500, we can establish a scholarship to match your area of interest. Perhaps you’d like to honor a loved one, or support a particular area of study. Of course, donations in any amount can be added to our General Scholarship Fund to help students pay for tuition and/or books. Like our students, our donors also come from all walks of life. Please join us and help to make dreams come true. Thanks to our generous friends, the IRSC Foundation awarded $2,286,288 in scholarship assistance to more than 2,300 students in 2012. Through the Take Stock in Children Program, we awarded four-year college tuition scholarships to 40 students who are the first in their families to attend college. Dedication to Teaching To maintain IRSC’s reputation for academic excellence, the IRSC Foundation provides instructional support to faculty through a variety of programs and initiatives. In critical areas of need, Foundation support provides funding for professor salaries. For example, through a private gift to the IRSC Foundation, salaries for critically-needed nursing instructors are provided. Endowed Teaching Chairs, made possible with private donations to the Foundation, reward excellence in the classroom. Professors are invited to submit projects which benefit students and the community. Following a highly-competitive process, the winning projects are funded for a 3-year period. Staying abreast of emerging trends and technology is vital for IRSC faculty members. The Foundation provides several professional development opportunities and recognition awards for instructors. Instructional support is vital to the continued achievement of excellence in the classroom. Your gift can help IRSC maintain its commitment to excellence. Assistant Professor Marvin Hobson was awarded the 2012 BankAtlantic Endowed Teaching Chair during a surprise classroom presentation for his project to establish the Zora Neale Hurston Center for Writing. Douglas Stephens Endowed Teaching Chair in Technology; Dr. Sarah Mallonee, Harriett Kirk Crago Faculty of the Year; and (not pictured) S. Arlene Green, Dan K. Richardson Endowed Teaching Chair in Business & Entrepreneurship. In 2012, the IRSC Foundation awarded four Endowed Teaching Chairs, one Anne R. Snyder Department Chair Excellence Award, and one Harriett Kirk Crago Faculty of the Year Award. It also provided professional development to department chairs through the Anne R. Snyder Department Chair Leadership Academy. The IRSC Foundation provides professional development programs for IRSC faculty and staff through the Employee Development Program. Dedication to the learning environment What we learn is influenced by how and where we learn. To be successful, today’s educational institutions must keep pace with students’ needs. IRSC facilities are also designed to meet the needs of area employers. Thanks to the generosity of private individuals and businesses, IRSC facilities contain up-to-date technology and equipment. Students receive “hands on” training using modern equipment which meets or exceeds what they will find in their future workplaces. As an example, IRSC’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Center at the Ken Pruitt Campus in St. Lucie West serves as a feeder institution for area research facilities, producing the highest caliber of scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians. Our region’s continuing economic development as the Research Coast hinges on providing students with a world-class education in these disciplines. The three-story, 56,000-square-foot facility houses laboratories in scientific fields such as genetics, ecology, chemistry, molecular science, botany, and microbiology. Many permanent naming opportunities are available at IRSC facilities in four counties. To learn more, please contact Ann Decker, Executive Director of the IRSC Foundation, at 772-462-4786 or [email protected]. With you as our partner, we can help students and local employers. IRSC’s STEM Center features enhanced equipment and laboratories thanks to the support provided by community members and businesses. In 2012, the IRSC Foundation provided $1.7 million to IRSC for facilities support. IRSC facilities are outstanding learning environments which are enjoyed by students, employees of area businesses, and members of the community. IRSC Honors student Adam Carroll gained laboratory experience as an intern at Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies and is well prepared to earn his graduate degree from the Lloyd L. Gregory School of Pharmacy at Palm Beach Atlantic University. Dedication Fielden Institute For Lifelong Learning to Lifelong Learning Lifelong learners invite you to shake up your hippocampus on our campus. Thanks to a most impressive cadre of peer leaders - all volunteering their wealth of knowledge, life experience, and passion for the subjects they wish to share - the Fielden Institute is now in its seventh successful year of community programming. Indian River State College Specifically designed for men and women age 50 and better, members of the Institute are redefining retirement. Lifelong learners are returning to the college classroom for some memorable mornings, awesome afternoons, and exciting evenings. No prerequisites, no long semesters, no grades, no tests, learning simply for the joy of learning. As one member describes it, “We come for the sustenance.” The purpose of the Fielden Institute for Lifelong Learning at Indian River State College is to deliver peer-driven programs that enhance the knowledge and social experiences of its members, and increase community appreciation of IRSC. Peer leaders volunteer to lead discussion and study groups, hands-on activities, field trips, lectures, book and film groups, all in a welcoming and appropriate environment for the adult learner held at all five IRSC campuses and community sites. The Institute’s Distinguished Lecture Series on Current Issues is held at IRSC campuses in Stuart and Vero Beach with subscribers enjoying experts and seasoned educators on subjects in foreign policy, healthcare, education, the environment and the economy. Center Stage at IRSC returns to tradition and now will offer both arts and humanities programs with such intergenerational notables as The Capitol Steps, Alexandra Cousteau and Twyla Tharp. Lifetime Membership was enthusiastically welcomed by a growing group choosing to enjoy as much of the peer-led programs for as long as schedules and interests permit with a one-time donation. We welcome you to opt in and see this as your investment in quality programming tailored to the kinds of things you want to be doing and help make happen. The Fielden Institute is now at 88% of its $1 million Endowment Fund goal thanks to the generosity of its membership and the communities the College serves. We welcome your support. Dr. Jean Fielden, sponsor of the Fielden Institute for Lifelong Learning at IRSC, with Dr. Edwin R. Massey. Indian River State College continues its commitment to the community with excellent programs and opportunities to keep learning and growing. If you or someone you know is interested in getting involved, please visit us at www.irscfoundation.org for more information. St. Lucie County resident and new Lifetime Member Kelley Chemerda was thrilled as she registered for more than 12 lifelong learning offerings. “The programs are terrific. You really get a bang for your buck which I believe is important. The peer leaders know their subject matter and really enjoy sharing. You meet so many people and I’ve learned a lot!” Pictured with Kelley (far right) are fellow lifetime members Gail Rodgers and Sandy Marshall. Special Memories Thanks to our many generous friends who believe in the good work we are doing... Dedication to Alumni The new Alumni Association makes it easier than ever for former students to stay connected to IRSC. Alumni Association This fast-growing and dynamic group is great for networking and socializing with other alumni. Members receive discounts at IRSC and from participating business partners. Helping future alumni pave the way to success, IRSC Alumni Association members volunteer to mentor and network with current IRSC students. Many alumni “give back” to IRSC in other ways, including contributing to scholarships, hiring IRSC graduates, and sponsoring events. Members of the IRSC Alumni Association can stay connected with fellow IRSC alumni on the IRSC Alumni Association Facebook Fan Page. Networking opportunities are available through alumni events held throughout the year. To learn more, visit www.irscfoundation.org. Go River! Many IRSC alumni and their families enjoyed a reception prior to the 2012 NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, held at the Anne Wilder Swimming and Diving Complex. Alumni Association annual membership is $10 and includes discounts at IRSC and from area merchants. Lifetime membership is $250. The Carlin family celebrates Lt. Col. Curtis W. Carlin’s selection as 2012 Distinguished Alumni at IRSC’s annual College Awards Ceremony. Zambas Sr. How You Can Help The IRSC Foundation provides the margin of excellence needed to help IRSC maintain its reputation as one of the top state colleges in the nation. Gifts from generous friends and donors support IRSC through the Foundation via three key areas: r 4DIPMBSTIJQT r &OIBODFE'BDJMJUJFT r 'BDVMUZ*OTUSVDUJPOBM4VQQPSU In addition to the joy you’ll receive through helping students to achieve their dreams, you may realize significant tax savings. The IRSC Foundation is a 501(C)(3) non-profit corporation, and major gifts may be pledged for up to five years. You can make a difference by giving: r r r r r 0VUSJHIU(JGU .POUIMZ(JGU 1MBOOFE%FGFSSFE (JGU 3FBM&TUBUFPS3FUBJOFE-JGF&TUBUF %POPS"EWJTFE'VOE You may specify a particular area you wish to support or let us put your gift to work immediately to address a critical need. You may also choose to establish a “custom” scholarship to match your interests or to honor a loved one. Organizations are vital partners in providing resources to students. Here, (L to R) Melissa DePriest, Development Coordinator, IRSC Foundation; Frank Gonzalez, General Manager/Vice President, Bev Smith Toyota-Scion; and Ann Decker, Executive Director, IRSC Foundation, launch the Bev Smith Toyota-Scion Automotive Scholarship.
