Enchanting performances artist, makeup artists, costume consultant, three technical consultants, a lighting designer, set of Coppélia in June were followed by an impressive School Performance and our innovative annual showcase of new choreography known as NEXT STEP. Each of these artistic triumphs over-achieved in the all-important single ticket sales goals. News about our Spring Challenge and a long anticipated significant gift from a foundation were unknown as we started the month of June. Despite expense cuts and heroic efforts to raise funds and generate revenue, we still needed positive news in these two areas and we got it. and costume designer, and a choreographer. All in, we spent close to three-quarters of a million dollars to mount the production. Our broad-based extensive New Works fundraising efforts matched that amount, while almost three-quarters of a million dollars in single ticket revenue confirmed that taking the risk was the right decision. Aside from the financial rewards of Don Quixote, our audiences were elated, evidenced not only by their ovations but also by their renewed subscription sales. But success comes with the understanding that vision must be balanced by wisdom. We recognize that we can only do so Though the year ended well it was not without challenges and strategic responses to those much, but what we are able to do is done with the highest level of quality. challenges. We continue to watch Nutcracker closely in the wake of a $461,000 shortfall in single ticket revenue. We have programmed fewer performances for the coming year in order to having fuller houses and better use of resources. We are embarking on a restructuring of our development department to better meet organizational needs. Plans are in place to increase revenue from events. An over-achievement with our Winter Wonderland Ball in January was encouraging. We are recognizing the financial strength of our School and its ability to support the broader needs of the institution. In short, we are responding to challenges, looking closely at expenses, cutting Peter Boal where we must, and maximizing revenue. We are making wise decisions going forward. Artistic Director There is not a day when we don’t think about finances at the ballet. We stretch a dollar as well as we stretch a hamstring. Our success can be attributed to a hardworking staff and board that understand how to work within a budget and a community that believes in its arts organizations and will step up to help when asked. Even in cautious economic times, we still take risks that we believe in and one of those was choosing to present Alexei Ratmansky’s stirring production of Don Quixote. Granted, sizable leadership gifts from two donors bolstered our confidence. The costs and planning were significant. Renting the production from the Dutch National Ballet, where it was created in 2010, was only the beginning. We brought in three stagers, two coaches, two actors, a character Photo © Angela Sterling our School Faculty and a consolidation of classes, which in some cases, reduces curriculum As the effects of the Great Recession seem to be abating, offerings. PNB has, however, been able to maintain scholarship support for talented young dancers at current levels. We struggled to arrive at a balanced budget for FY’12 which relied on popular works such as a full-length Don Quixote, Carmina Burana, and Coppélia, while foregoing some programs of new works with less revenue generating potential. It contemplated further reductions in education and outreach resulting in reduced access for young people. It included a continued reduction in D. David Brown Executive Director From our Executive Director From our Chairman of the Board It is an honor for Joe Norman and me to partner with Peter Boal and David Brown in leading Pacific Northwest Ballet. Our 2011-2012 season challenges brought many opportunities to work together to find solutions. It was a year in which the partnership among leadership and the board was paramount -- and, frankly, at it’s very best. Through the unrelenting work of staff and board, we achieved both the artistic and financial results that we are proud to share with you in this annual report. PNB’s success is dependent upon those who consistently and passionately work for and on behalf of the company and those that believe and fund our mission. I would like to thank those PNB trustees and major donors who, through their increasing generosity, continue to validate the very meaningful role we play in our constituents’ lives. These important people and organizations lead by example and inspire the rest of the PNB community to stretch a little further and dig a little deeper. You will find these important donors in our program listings. They are our corporate, foundation and community partners and our Stowell Society and Members of the Barre donors. We are fortunate to count each and every one of them as friends. Their generous contributions, together with thousands of other gifts to PNB, coupled with box office support throughout the season, produced $20.2 million of total revenue of which 31% was contributed and 69% earned. PNB’s contributed support is largely focused on directly supporting our programs. Of our $20 million budget, 87% directly funds our artistic, production, school and outreach program expenses. In a trying year, the heroic efforts of PNB staff must be acknowledged. Despite our periodic challenges to box office revenues and fundraising, our staff showed an unwavering level of dedication and sacrifice in their continuing support of our mission. The predicament of missing our Nutcracker goal by $461,000 required a laser-like focus during the second half of the year by our marketing and development staff. Nutcracker was immediately followed by Alexei Ratmansky’s massive production of Don Quixote which brought with it tremendous enthusiasm from the press and the box office. Our development staff raised $1.2 million to support PNB’s New Works Initiative, which included the rather costly Don Quixote. They also mounted our third spring challenge initiative inspired by a generous, anonymous donor. Collectively, our donor and all of you had raised an additional and much-needed $503,296 by the time the fiscal year closed in June. While we ended the year with a $7,364 budget surplus we did so only through the use of $530,000 from PNB’s stabilization fund. One of the board’s top priorities remains financial stability. We will be working hard throughout the coming, landmark year to grow our stabilization and foundation assets. On the eve of launching our much-anticipated 40th Anniversary Season, I could not be more optimistic about our future and inspired by our past. I am immensely thankful to have been PNB’s President for five years and its Chairman for the past two. To be surrounded by PNB’s talented staff and passionate volunteers is a gift and a responsibility our board members take seriously. While navigating a precarious economy of late, PNB’s artistic results continue to accelerate. My heartfelt gratitude goes to Peter Boal and David Brown for so deftly managing PNB. As renowned and successful as PNB is, we can also be fragile. We do not take our stature in this community or the dance world for granted. Every year requires difficult tradeoffs, artistic inspiration, and above all support from each of you. You are all a vital part of our organization and your passion and support are essential to our success. Without you, we would not be PNB. Sincerely, Aya S. Hamilton Chairman, PNB Board of Trustees PNB principal dancer Karel Cruz Photo © Angela Sterling Valued traditions, fearless innovation, and highest standards – all organizations aspire to these goals, but few attain them. Pacific Northwest Ballet’s greatness rests on its decades of consistency as a citadel of exactly these qualities. The result is a company entering its 40th-anniversary season as a peerless artistic gem in the Pacific Northwest and an esteemed worldwide leader within the ballet profession. The 2011-12 PNB season again proved the remarkable versatility of our talented dancers across the spectrum of classical and modern choreography. PNB’s reputation continues to attract the best choreographers living today: we became the first American company to present not only an entire evening of works by Christopher Wheeldon but also Alexei Ratmansky’s ravishingly beautiful, fresh staging of Don Quixote. The season featured 6 works danced in Seattle for the first time, of which 2 were world premieres; standouts for me included the artistic purity, virtuosity, and sheer beauty of Jerome Robbins’ Afternoon of a Faun and David Dawson’s A Million Kisses to my Skin. PNB honored its tradition as a premiere home for George Balanchine’s incomparable works, this year offering the mesmerizing Apollo, the rich full-length Coppélia, and (for the first time) the light-hearted Divertimento from “Le Baiser de la Fée.” Audiences welcomed the return after several years of the rousing Carmina Burana by Founding Artistic Director Kent Stowell; it has never looked better than on our current masterful company. Such remarkable quality, variety, and influence do not come cheap, especially in an enterprise as necessarily labor-intensive as the arts. Our loyal and open-minded audience is simply the best anywhere – a larger fraction of the Puget Sound population attends the ballet than in any other metropolitan area in the country. We are equally grateful to the generous donors who every year supply over 30-40% of expenses not covered by ticket sales. We are not yet the national leader in that area, and we ask all who enjoy and esteem our work to consider a higher level of contribution, knowing that you are making the critical difference for artists of astonishing talent, dedication, and class. The two other essential pillars of PNB, namely the School and the community-outreach programs, continue (like the Company) among the five best nationally, making PNB one of greater Seattle’s most distinguished educational as well as artistic institutions. PNB principal dancer Kaori Nakamura and soloist James Moore. Photo © Angela Sterling The rigorous dance training of a thousand select students at the School’s Seattle and Bellevue locations produces young men and women far more mature, disciplined, and ready for life’s challenges than their peers. Moreover, the School is the foundation of the Company; a majority of the company dancers were trained there in the admired PNB style. The careers of most were made possible by generous scholarship donations, without which the School could never attract the most talented students. Over the last 10 years, we are proud to have increased scholarship support from $300,000 to $570,000 annually, and we invite all to join us in working toward our long-term goal of $1 million annual support. I can tell you personally that nothing in life has brought me more satisfaction than watching the exceptional recipients of my Lucinda Hughey Endowed Scholarship develop as dancers and young people, knowing that my funding opened doors for them. PNB outreach programs bring the creativity and excitement of dance to over 20,000 students and teachers annually in 68 local schools spanning 4 counties. They culminate in memorable opportunities for the students to perform at McCaw Hall. The parents tell us constantly of their gratitude for the life-changing impacts on their children. A great arts institution serves its whole community; once again, we would be delighted to have you join us by donating to keep this wonderful program strong. Every year brings change at PNB, as in any vital organization. This past year we welcomed through well-deserved promotions 2 new principal dancers (Rachel Foster and Lesley Rausch), 4 new soloists (Kiyon Gaines, Kylee Kitchens, Sarah Orza, and Jerome Tisserand), 4 new corps members (Leta Biasucci, Angelica Generosa, Elizabeth Murphy, and Matthew Renko), and – from the PNB School – 2 apprentices (Steven Loch and Sarah Pasch). We made plans to shorten our Nutcracker run and tour more nationally and internationally. We began restructuring our fund-raising operations and considering anew how to build the PNB Endowment to a higher level. What did not change was our appreciation of you, our PNB family, and our determination to keep your ballet company at the top. Joe G. Created for the Dutch National Ballet in 2010, this fresh take on the timeless Spanish classic was a true feast for the eyes. The full scale production included three acts of beautiful scenery and 280 elaborate costumes and props by renowned designer Jérôme Kaplan including tutus, capes, castanets and fans. In addition to eight shipping containers full of sets from Amsterdam, the production also brought three renowned stagers and the in-demand choreographer to PNB over the course of three months. The virtuoso score from Ludwig Minkus, and story based on Miguel de Cervantes’ celebrated novel, brought a spectacular production to light brimming with the wit and romance of Spain’s legendary hero. With immeasurable gratitude to Dan and Pam Baty, Glenn Kawasaki, Patty Edwards, Peter & Peggy Horvitz and many other esteemed members of the Don Quixote Fan Club, the curtain rose on this illustrious premiere and beloved addition to the PNB repertory. The PNB Foundation Board manages our investments to earn income that will generate funds for Pacific Northwest Ballet Association while also increasing the value of the endowment’s assets. In the fiscal year 2012, PNB Foundation received $717,696 in new gifts, pledges, and bequests. With these donations, assets under management total $12,072,368 (NOTE: The total of $14,276,980 indicated below includes receivables which cannot be invested until they are paid to PNB Foundation by the donor). This year, investment value decreased $277,000 or 2.4% which compares favorably to our investment policy benchmark which decreased 2.9%. The PNB Foundation was able to make a gift of $782,000 to the Association in fiscal year 2012, demonstrating that PNB Foundation upholds its responsibility to make conscientious financial decisions to provide long-term support to PNB. I want to thank all of our donors for recognizing the importance of building the PNB Endowment. Your generosity allows PNB to create dynamic new works, maintain beloved classics, attract and retain the best artists, and provide high quality dance education and outreach programming to our community. Thank you for your dedication to and belief in Pacific Northwest Ballet.
