Some of you might remember when Sara Lee’s products were in the
grocery freezer and advertised by the double negative promise, “Nobody
doesn’t like Sara Lee.” And they were right, who didn't like their cakes
and pies and cheesecake?
Some foods, on the other hand, are an acquired taste. Think about the
foods you’ve learned to enjoy, even though the first taste may have been
nasty enough for you to hold your breath and grimace as you swallowed.
Here’s a recent list of food items that require an “acquired taste,” or a
trained palate to enjoy:
Raw oysters
Coffee
Kimchi
Anchovies
Olives
Lutefisk
Haggis
Vegemite
Blue Cheese
I apparently haven’t trained my palate, as I still can’t abide a stinky, blue
with mold chunk of cheese or the bitter biting taste of coffee, or for that
matter, any of the other items on the list.
When it comes to our faith, do we reduce discipleship to a “nobody
doesn’t like it” faith? Is our faith still based on the Sara Lee model—
sweet and sticky piety that is impossible not to like? Or do we challenge
ourselves to acquire new tastes and preferences as disciples of Jesus?
What happens when God throws a challenge before us, a challenge that
isn’t so easy to swallow? Something like forgiveness or compromise or
maybe to be involved in the church in a way that is different than your
usual comfort food?
It is my hope that you go beyond the niceties of an easy, comfortable
faith, and that you accept the challenge to work in God’s kingdom. Where
God calls, there should we follow, even if it means having to acquire a
taste for the ministry to which he calls us.

55 Rally Day & Ministry Fair Sunday, Sept. 8–10am – 12:30pm Have you ever thought about our church body, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA)? We are not just a congregation alone in the world, state, or even our county. We are part of nearly 10,000 congregations with 4 million members. This year we celebrate 25 years since the ELCA was formed from3 smaller church bodies. We are a church that rolls up our sleeves and gets to work. Sunday, September 8, 2013 is being set as “God’s work. Our hands.” This is an opportunity to celebrate our 25th anniversary as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America – one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. As a project we have a church that needs our help – Salem Lutheran Church in Flint. Pastor Huff knows the congregation and says they do a fantastic job with the Lutheran Social Services of Michigan foster children and the youth in their community. We have a list of their needs and see some jobs we could take on and “get our hands dirty” in a good way. September 8th is a Kick Off of what we hope will be the start of a year-‐long time of service. September 8th is also Rally Day at St. George. There will also be emphasis on the youth program and the start of Sunday School at 10am. The youth have already started on a service project in Vacation Bible School. They will be collecting items for the LESA backpack project with Love INC. Our celebration will continue after worship services with a Ministry Fair. Our different service and fun groups will have displays or information on all the ways we can serve. There will be t-‐shirts available printed with “God’s work. Our hands.” On the front and our church name on the back. These are only $6.50 and will identify us as a working church when we are out and about. Quilts For Lutheran World Relief - Last Meeting On Wednesday, September 11, 9:30am we will be tying the last batch of quilts to go to Lutheran World Relief to be shipped to various parts of the world where they are needed the most. Boxes should be large enough to pack 2 or 3 quilts. We don't want them too heavy. Still fresh in our minds is the visit of five members of St. George (Katie Higgs, Rella Lanzi, Molly Sornson accompanied by Al Asfour and Amy Cooley Higgs as adult leaders ) plus others from around the country to Holy Land this past summer (June 25-‐July 10). DID YOU KNOW that the 11th Pastor of St. George, The Rev. Albert Abraham Moussa, was born and raised in Palestine? Although Arabic in nationality, he was educated in German, Greek, English, Arabic, Hebrew, and Latin in Jerusalem where he grew up. Age the age of sixteen he traveled to Basel, Switzerland, and entered the theological seminary. He was ordained in 1878. He served St. George from Fall Fellowship Events Join us for two special fall dinners at St. George! 99 1880-‐1885. It was under his leadership that the church outgrew its original building (in the old part of our Church Cemetery) and built a new one on the northeast corner of what is now known as Herbst and Hubert roads. That church was later torn down and moved into Brighton in 1922. It seems that our church has come around full circle from having had a pastor from the Holy Land to some of our youth and adults now visiting that same part of the world. I would like to thank everyone who donated hymnals to St. George. They are in the pews now and we will be using them more in the future. Take a moment to look through them. Although they contain more liturgical settings than the green hymnal, included are those we are familiar with. You may notice slight changes in wording in hymns. Thanks also go to everyone who assists in any way in the worship service. We can always use additional volunteers. I will be recruiting on Rally Day for: assisting ministers, lectors, communion assistants, ushers, greeters, technical assistants (computer and sound systems), and any other area that you might like to be involved in. Please welcome Joe Hiller to St. George as our new Contemporary Service Music Leader for the 11am service Praise Team. Joe Hillier has been a resident of Howell since 2002. He has been active in music for most of his life, and is excited for the opportunity to use his gifts to serve The Lord. When he isn't playing music, he spends time with his girlfriend, Nicole Ronald, and their two cats. Joe Hiller Contemporary Service We want to thank Sally Headley for her Music Leader devotion to the Church through music, and her encouragement to find a new contemporary music musician to create more excitement for the 11 am Contemporary Music Service. Yvonne Cavalli Director, St. George Food Pantry 810-360-0271 or 810-588-3529 [email protected] WOW! The weather is as flaky as a good homemade biscuit. I don't know if we are in summer or if fall is coming soon. The pantry is the same. We have had a very busy summer. And it is still heating up. UPCOMIING EVENTS: Fill the Truck Food Drive September 7 10am until 6pm at the Walmart in Hartland. Come join us for the fun. We could still use a few hands. Remembering 9-11 BBQ September 11, 11am until 6pm Simply Fresh Market 9884 E. Grand River. Brighton Together with Simply Fresh Market we are feeding the Veterans, Police Officers and Firemen FREE. The menu is Pulled Pork, Cole Slaw, Corn on the Cob and Watermelon. Not a Veteran, Police Officer or Fireman come anyway and eat for just $7.00 a plate. These men and women put their lives on the line for us on a daily basis, so come join us in thanking them for all the wonderful work they do. We want to thank all of you who are donating food to the pantry. It is very much needed and appreciated. We will be letting you know the high priority items (and the most expensive for the pantry to purchase in quantity) on a monthly basis. The month of September will be TUNA OR CANNED MEAT month. Again thank you for your support. Any item is welcome, the requested item is the high priority item. August totals are not in as of the deadline for the newsletter so I will not be able to give you August totals until next month. We are seeing two to three new families come in almost weekly for sign up for assistance. I found out this week that not everyone knows what we do at the pantry. A brief rundown is: food pantry, hot breakfast, clothing pantry, resource navigation (this is helping them with getting help paying utilities, rent, mortgage payments, bridge card, household appliances and medicaid, a youth Bible study and an adult Bible study and more). Through July of this year the pantry has served 1780 families, 4914 individuals ( 1,272 children and 1286 seniors) with 51,000 pounds of food. The pantry is on target to distribute over 101,000 pounds of food this year. A GREAT ROUND OF APPLAUSE TO OUR VOLUNTEERS. St George congregation can be very proud of the work that is being done for the community in the name of the Lord. 11 News from

Ministries
Special Ministries is having another busy summer session. You may have seen a photo on the front page of the local newspaper taken at our annual field day in support of the 12th Annual Livingston County Day of Caring. Kickball, lawn bowling, crafts, bunco, water balloon toss and a cookout lunch were all enjoyed at the Howell City Park. It is so kind the facilities are donated to us for this special day every summer. Volunteers of a variety of ages came out from the community, including local businesses like T.G. Fluids, Asahi-‐Kasei Plastics, etc. There is also the 6th annual bicycle riding fundraiser for all ages and levels sponsored by the Howell Rotary to benefit the critical need programs of the L.C. United Way called Tour de Livingston www.tourdelivingston.org 25% of our income comes from this great agency. We thank several Knights of Columbus Councils (St. Patrick’s, St. Joseph’s, St. John the Baptist, St. Mary Magdalen, etc.) for sharing funds raised from their annual tootsie roll drives with us. We thank First Presbyterian Church of Brighton for donations from their green envelope collection from June and Faith Lutheran Church in East Highland for paying some participant fees for our bicycle riding program and welcoming 8 of our participants as helpers at their vacation bible school. Heart of the Shepherd Lutheran Church has become a family to us and for the last several years we’ve attended their family bible camp. 16 participants attended and 12 were given rides. The theme was “God’s Backyard Bible Camp – Shine Like Stars!”. They were kind and donated their noisy collection offerings for the week to pay for participant rides so more participants would attend. Director Diane Mosey [email protected] www.special-ministries.org important service we utilize monthly and they work to meet our needs at reduced costs whenever they can! One bus has a bicycle rack, a few others can carry 3 wheelchairs, busses are being equipped with surveillance cameras due to a grant, etc. Hats off for the great job they do as local needs grow and they expand services, their bus fleet, etc. to help meet the needs! Visit their web site. www.livgov.com/lets/Pages/default.aspx Our collaboration with the Brighton Kiwanis Club continues with our new Aktion Club www.aktionclub.org. Members helped at the Millpond Concerts by making popcorn in the new popcorn wagon, handing out programs, helping sell raffle tickets and selling our bags of peanuts and Rainbow Auto car wash tokens. Many participants, staff and family members will attend an overnight statewide camp September 20-‐21st near Alma and I will be attending a national conference about Aktion Clubs in Indianapolis in a few weeks. “Agape is understanding, creative, redemptive goodwill towards all men. Agape is an overflowing love, which seeks nothing in return. Theologians would say that it is the love of God operating in the human heart. When you rise to love on this level, you love all men not because you like them, not because their ways appeal to you, but you love them because God loves them.” —Martin Luther King, Jr. Sincerely and Keep the Faith, Diane Mosey 12 13 13
