The neighbourhood originated around the Santa Teresa Convent, built in the 1750s on the Desterro hill. At the end of the 19th and early 20th century it was an upper class borough, as testified by its magnificent mansions, many of which are still standing. In 1896, the Carioca Aqueduct, a colonial structure that used to bring water to the centre of Rio, was converted into a bridge for the Santa Teresa tram (bondinho). The old tram is still in use today - the only one in Rio - and is a popular attraction among tourists. The ride starts in the city centre, near the Largo da Carioca square, crosses the old aqueduct and goes through the picturesque streets of the neighbourhood. Wonderful views of the city downhill can be appreciated. Former residence of Laurinda Santos Lobo, one of the most important patrons of Rio, the place was the scene of popular music and poetry evenings between years 20 and 40. After the death of owner, in 1946, the house was closed for decades and has been completely looted. First objects were brought from the interior . When nothing else had , windows , doors , tiles and exterior ornaments were also stolen and turned house ruin. In the 90s the city became the place near the Largo do Curvelo in a cultural center with one of the most beautiful viewpoints of the River Largo do Curvelo The tram arrives at the Rua Almirante Alexandrina, the oldest in the neighborhood. It is the House Ship, inspired on the deck of a vessel, pure architectural daring. And that's the same street that has a breathtaking view of Valentine's Castle, a fortress erected in neo-romantic style. Built in the late 19th century, was the residence of Commander Anthony Valentine, designed by his son. Today the building serves as an apartment building. That way, a belvedere a beautiful landscape of Guanabara Bay. Largo dos Guimarães The tram goes into the heart of the neighborhood. At Largo dos Guimarães concentrate the most exciting restaurants and bars offering cold beer and great snacks. Among them, Bar do Mineiro, Bar Arnaudo (food Northeastern), Supernatural (seafood) and Adega do Pimenta (German). When night falls, the agitation takes place. Following the tracks of the tram takes you to Largo das Neves, where there is a beautiful hamlet of 1850 and the Church of Nossa Senhora das Neves, 1860, plus a series of bars too crowded.
