Muslim rebels under the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) of Nur Misuari “invaded” Zamboanga city Sept.8 at dawn taking over several barangays (villages), held hundreds of residents hostages and engaged government soldiers in running gun battles that has so far resulted in 52 deaths and hundreds more wounded. This new flare up in Muslim insurgence has derailed on-going peace talks to end the decades long conflict in Mindanao with an agreed formation of a so-called Bangsa Moro entity designed to grant autonomy and a form of self-government under Philippine sovereignty. As a result of this new violence, all flights in and out of Zamboanga city remain suspended, business at a standstill, classes suspended and curfew enforced from 8:00pm to 5:00am to protect residents being caught in the hostilities. Already there are some 82,000 displaced residents of the city while at least four barangays remained under control by the MNLF using hundreds of them as human shields. Government troopers, backed by armoured personnel carriers and helicopter gunships tried to flush out the MNLF rebels said to be under a certain Commander Malik, a close aide of Misuari, but were met by sniper fires and mortar barrages. ABS-CBNnews.com MANILA – A Canadian student is being held by immigration officials for her alleged participation in the protest rally during President Benigno Aquino III's State of the Nation Address in July, human rights advocate Karapatan said. Karapatan said Kim Chatillon-Meunier, 24, is at the Bureau of Immigration detention center in Camp Bagong Diwa in Bicutan, Taguig. "We call on the BI to immediately release Kim and allow her to go home to Canada. We likewise demand that such blacklists/ watchlists should be withdrawn or scrapped by the BI, as these are tools for harassment and suppression of fundamental rights," Karapatan said in a press statement. full details of what happened to her," Karapatan Secretary General Cristina Palabay told ABSCBNnews.com on Saturday morning. Palabay said ChatillonMeunier merely observed the rally. She did not join the march nor held placards. Kim Chatillon-Meunier The group learned that Chatillon-Meunier was nabbed on Friday evening while about to take her flight for Hong Kong. She was also placed on an immigration "watchlist" for allegedly participating in the SONA rally. "Kumuha na din kami ng representation to make sure (Continued on page 5) delayed is justice denied By Atty. Harry Roque Jr The petitioners’ complaint was simple. Under the 1987 Constitution, local governments were given a fair and equitable share in the revenues derived from natural resources found in their area. Under the Local Government Code, this share was defined as 40 percent of all gross government receipts from these resources. Palawan civil society then argued that a provisional sharing agreement entered into by Mrs. Arroyo and the then -local leadership of the province providing that Palawan shall be entitled to 20 percent net of all government revenues was uncon- stitutional. This was on at least four grounds: First, the interim sharing agreement amended the legal provision on how much the entitlement should be: from 40 percent of gross to 20 percent net; Second, it amended the local government code in the manner by which it was to be shared by the barangay, municipality and province where the resources are found. Under the law, the province shall have 20 percent of such revenues, while the municipality and the barangay are to have the lion’s share of the revenues: 35 percent and 45 percent, respectively. The sharing agreement called for projects to be identified by the two representatives of the province, its governor, and the mayor of Palawan. Third, the Code provides the manner by which the money was to be spent: 80 percent of all sums should be applied to lower the cost of electricity in the province, while the remaining 20 percent should go to local government projects and for livelihood. The Interim sharing agreement made the fund additional pork barrel for the two representatives of the province and its other The trip is "part of his ongoing commitment to increase US political, economic and security engagement with the Asia Pacific," the statement said. Plunder and Malampaya: Justice In February of 2004, civil society led by Bishop Pedro Dulay Arigo of Palawan, Cesar Sarino, the late Dr Gerry Ortega, the late Dr. Jose Antonio Socrates, Prof. Oscar Evangelista and Cesar R. Ventura and I filed suit before the Supreme Court questioning the legality of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s use of the government proceeds from the Malampaya natural gas field. Petitioners, before going to the Supreme Court, had previously filed suit in the RTC of Palawan and the Court of Appeals, pursuant the hierarchy of Courts. The fourth argument of the petitioners would prove to be perhaps the most important argument in promoting good governance. Petitioners argued that the manner by which Mrs. Arroyo entered into the agreement was unconstitutional because she spent the funds without congressional authorization. In entering into the questioned sharing agreement, PGMA invoked the provision of a little known Marcos Presidential Decree 910, section 8 of which reads: “— Section 8. x x x production share on service contracts and similar payments on the exploration, development and exploitation of energy resources, shall form part of a Special Fund to be used to finance energy resource development and exploitation programs and projects of the government and for such other purposes as may be hereafter directed by the President.” Petitioners argued that this violates the rule that no money shall be paid out of the national treasury without appropriation by law. PGMA, on the other hand, argued that because of the foregoing PD, all govern(Continued on page 6) The White House said that Obama will visit Malaysia to take part in the Global Entrepreneurship Summit, an initiative on job growth that the US leader designed as a way to reach out to the Islamic world. Palace tells reporters in Zambo: Keep safe distance MANILA – Malacanang on Saturday appealed to media personnel in Zamboanga City to keep a safe distance from the conflict zone. Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte expressed concern over the safety of reporters covering the standoff, saying they should not put their lives at risk just to put out a story. As we go to press, charges of plunder are poised against some lawmakers (among them perhaps a former senate president) and other personalities in connection with the P10 Billion Pork barrel Fund “scam-dal” (scam and scandal). The premise of these charges is based on the amount that was allegedly pocketed which surpassed the threshold of P50 Million for a crime to be considered as plunder. So far, it was only disgraced president Erap Estrada who was convicted of this crime but was pardoned by then president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. Arroyo herself may be facing the same music soon as she is presently detained in a hospital. There are fears the Pork barrel scandal could trigger another EDSA uprising. Many agree, people are sick and tired of widespread corruption in the bureaucracy. Aside from the pork barrel mess, Pnoy’s hand is also full with the present Zamboanga crisis as the MNLF Moro National Liberation Front continue to put Zamboanga city under siege after it attacked that Mindanao hub last Sept.8, holding hundreds of residents hostages in some 4 barangays (villages). The “ invasion” resulted to at least 52 deaths so far and displaced some 80,000 city dwellers. Not only a serious security matter, the resurgent MNLF shows a weak link to the ongoing peace process to the decades-old Muslim Mindanao problem that has claimed almost half a million lives since the 1970s and stunted Mindanao’s development. A peace agreement and a proposed Bangsa Moro entity to give autonomy to Muslims were supposed to be forged in the next few weeks but with the MNLF’s attack on Zamboanga city, it could again derail a lasting peace in that region. At the heart of the problem, if we were to believe Nur Misuari, head of the MNLF, was the seeming failure on the government’s part to include the MNLF in the peace talks and the alleged junking of the 1996 peace agreement inked by the government with the MNLF. Amid all these, there are still the territorial disputes with China and the impending deployment of US forces in Philippine soil which many believed is a ploy to bring back the US bases. The president’s cup indeed runneth over. People are waiting for results. Will the pork scandal, the Mindanao problem and other big issues, suffer the same fate as the Ampatuan massacre of 2009 which up to this day is moving at a snail’s pace. Will Pnoy muster enough political will to show that his “matuwid na Daan” is truly the real thing ? COUNTERPOINT A.F. Soriano WHO’S BEHIND THE MNLF ZAMBOANGA CITY SIEGE? Talks are ripe nowadays in the Manila grapevine and news circles about personalities behind the Sept.8 Moro national Liberation Front (MNLF) sneak attack in Zamboanga city. The suspicion is some “consulsultants” instigated the renewed fighting in Mindanao to divert attention to the ongoing Pork barrel scam investigation. “Mayroon nagsulsul kay Misuari and the MNLF (somebody goaded or intrigued Misuari) para guluhin ang sitwasyon and let the government be kept busy in the Zamboanga crisis para ma-divert ang attention of the media and the people away from the pork barrel investigation,” a media colleague intimated. As of this writing, Napoles and senators Ramon “Bongbong” Revilla, Jinggoy Estrada, Juan Ponce Enrile were formally charged (Sept.16) with the crime of plunder, bribery and graft and corruption practices, which carry the penalty of reclusion perpetua or life imprisonment and or death. According to the charge sheet filed with the Ombudsman, the three lawmakers combined or through conspiracy with Napoles, had defrauded or amassed money from the pork barrel a total amount of more than P500 million. ***** The filing of charges against the three senators assumes added political color since all of these senators belong to the opposition with Revil- la and Jinggoy Estrada both nursing presidential and vice presidential plans respectively. Enrile on the other hand is a respected and influential political master whose expertise could be tapped in a presidential campaign. Too, Enrile is one of country’s brightest legal minds, a seasoned trial lawyer before he joined politics. ***** Speculations are swirling on the coincidence of the Zamboanga city attack to wit: -The Philippines during the time of President Cory Aquino was enjoying good investors confidence when she restored democracy after the 1986 EDSA revolution. But six months later, her government was rocked by a series of coup d’etats that scared away investments. What do you call that? Destabilization. And who were behind all these? -Today, the Philippines is the current emerging leader of ASEAN countries in terms of economic growth surpassing erstwhile leader Indonesia and also topping giant China in terms of quarterly growth. It’s a plus factor for Pnoy and his political party and it could translate into votes. With Revilla, Estrada and Enrile charged with plunder, their political stock would certainly take a big plunge and their chances of winning in the 2016 elections seem already doomed. Now who are the people behind the Zamboanga city siege? Was Misuari acting alone? ***** Now comes vice president Jojo Binay announcing a ceasefire in Zamboanga city he claimed to have brokered with Misuari but was quickly rebuffed by minions of President Pnoy on grounds that it was unauthorized. Binay was accused of using the Zamboanga situation to get political mileage and grandstanding. Binay has recently announced he is running for the presidency in 2016. Defense secretary Voltaire Gazmin said there was no ceasefire at all. ***** FOCUS ON FILIPINOCANADIAN SENIORS: A study titled, “Life is really hard here: The living conditions and needs of Filipino elderlies in the greater Toronto area”, authored by Roland Santos Coloma, Frank Villanueva and Luther Pino in collaboration with the Filipino Center of Toronto headed by Linda Javier is quite an interesting but revealing piece. It shows the predicament of our Filipino-Canadians seniors with respect to living conditions, income and their health. But the more telling finding was that 70 percent of them are living or considered as poor despite all of the benefits afforded them in their adopted homeland. A former chief of staff of Enrile, lawyer Jessica “Gigi “ Reyes is also included in the charge sheet but was reported to have left the country before the charges were filed. She said the three senators allegedly committed plunder in conspiracy with Napoles and other officials of implementing agencies when each of them accumulated more than the P50 million plunder threshold through a series of “transactions over time through misappropriation, conversion, misuse and malversation of the cash value of the project cost allocated through their PDAF (Priority development assistance Fund) and through their acceptance of kickbacks or commissions. Despite rumors that he is flying to Hongkong, Jinggoy Estrada doused speculations when he said he is staying put to face the charges but warned against efforts “to condition the minds of the public that we’re the worst thieves and I can’t accept that”. It was this argument that later led COA to conclude that at least P2.3 billion of the Malampaya funds were misused by local government officials of Palawan including its fugitive ex-governor Joel Reyes and the defeated Baham Mitra. Unfortunately, it was this interpretation that also led to the disbursement of the first tranche of P900 million Malampaya release that COA now says were plundered by Napoles and her cohorts. Ironically, the first tranche released to Napoles was authorized only two days after our oral argument in the Supreme Court on November 24, 2009. Worse, it is this interpretation that led to the release of a further P26.3 billion of Malampaya funds which early reports now say may have been released and malversed by Arroyo shortly before the 2010 elections. It comes hence as no surprise that much of the scandal unearthed by the Napoles revelations involve the Malampaya funds. To begin with, the popular clamor that there “shall be no taxation without representation” was based on the idea that the people’s representatives should authorize all public spending and shall exercise oversight on the manner the sums are spent. Because the Malampaya funds were spent without congressional authorization, and hence without oversight, it was spent for any and all purpose that the President desired, And when you have a kleptomaniac for a president, that meant spending the money all for naught. I cannot help but also blame the Court for this fiasco. The Malampaya petition has been pending in our courts since 2004. It reached the Supreme Court in 2009 after passing through the hierarchy of courts, Until today, it has not been resolved. Had the court acted on the petition seasonably, we may have prevented Napoles from squandering P900 million worth of public funds that could have gone to livelihood and lowering the cost of electricity in Palawan. We may even have prevented the further plunder of P26.3 billion worth of Malampaya revenues and applied the same not just for national defense, but also for education and heath purposes. As the saying goes, “justice delayed is justice denied.” I rest my case. ADVERTISE WITH WAVES 416 616-8169 or 647 718-1360 Is your HOME and AUTO insurance up for RENEWAL? Call NOW for a FREE quote! Mercurio Are you sponsoring relatives to Canada? Of course, you love them and want them to have a better chance. But here’s what you have to contend. Due to a recent Supreme Court ruling, Canadians or permanent residents who are sponsoring their family members from abroad to come to Canada could find themselves owing thousands of dollars should their sponsored relatives turn to social assistance during the sponsorship period. In a 9-0 ruling last June 10 the top court partly allowed the appeal of the Attorneys General of Canada and Ontario against the Ontario Court of Appeals 2009 ruling in Mavi vs Canada (Atty. General). The decision calls for sponsors to repay immigrants debts. The top court's ruling relates to a case launched by eight Canadians or permanent residents who sponsored family members to come to Canada. Pritpal Singh Mavi and four other respondents found themselves owing thousands of dollars to the Ontario government because “their relatives turned to social assistance during the sponsorship period when sponsors were contractually bound to pay for all their relatives’ essential needs,” reports the Lawyers Weekly June 24, 2011 issue. Represented by counsel, “the respondent sponsors argued that they were unable to foresee or control their relatives’ receipt of social assistance and that they could not afford to repay the government for the money it spent on their relatives,” the report adds. Justice Ian Binnie after examining immigration regulations and legislation decreed that “the discretion enables governments to delay enforcement action having regard to the sponsors circumstances and to enter into agreements respecting (Continued from page 3) PALACE TO REPORTERS IN ZAMBO…. The top court's decision also held that there is no obligation on the government decision-maker to give reasons. “This is purely administrative process. The existence of the debt is, in the context of this particular program, reason enough to proceed.” Lucas Lung of Lerners LLP and Lisa Loader who represented most of the immigration sponsors in the Mavi case said “ the court’s decision not to impose a duty on the Crown to give reasons is a blow to sponsors.” The report adds that “under section 145 of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) there is no discretion given to the (federal immigration) minister, or to provincial governments to forgive, or write off, the debt, in whole or in part.” Toronto lawyer Hugh Evans, who represented two of the Mavi respondents, said he expects more litigation, the report added. The death toll in the ongoing firefight has climbed to 52, the Armed Forces of the Philippines said on Saturday. The oldest Marian image was brought by Spanish missionaries and is enshrined at Malate Church in Manila. In 1952, Bishop Cesar Maria Guerrero entrusted Pampanga under the patronage of the Blessed Mother. He sent out the image of Virgen de los Remedios to visit every village, town and city where the people could gather in prayer and learn from Mary the right way to live, to find God and to live in harmony. Later on, the image of Santo Cristo del Perdon was added in procession. Mary, our Mother intercedes and brings us all to her Son—to Jesus through Mary. These visitations of our Lady and her Son continue up to the present day around the province. Daily Masses are held, the rosary is recited non-stop and in between prayers, the community shares in the prepared meals. Goods are collected and distributed to the needy while reconciliation, forgiveness and peace reign. In 1956, Pope Pius XII bestowed the canonical crown to the revered image in recognition of the people’s devotion to Mary. Every September 8, the province of Pampanga gathers to reenact the event. In 2006 this tradition was brought by Kampampangan expatriates at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels that is held every second Sunday of September. A crown is presented to our Lady, as an expression of Mary’s dominion over her children that places them in the hands of the Blessed Mother. On this special day, everyone rediscovers the maternal role the Virgin Mary plays in our lives so that we may always be docile disciples and courageous witness of her Son, Jesus Christ. We The Town of Dolores, Quezon: “The New Jerusalem of the Philippines” In the year 1934, it was decided by the provincial officials of Batangas and Tayabas, with the concurrence of Bishop of Nueva Gaceras. Upon the approval of the Gobernador y Capitan Heneral de las Islas Pilipinas and the Archbishop of Manila, a town was established in the vicinity of Sitio Hambujan. This place is now called Sta. Lucia, was a famous bathing resort at the time. Dolores is a mystical town in the province of Quezon, about 98 km. southeast of Manila. It is composed of 16 barangays, four of which are in Poblacion. It is bounded in the south by Tiaong and the city of San Pablo, Laguna is in the west. Towards going east, one can find the municipalities from Laguna are in the northern portion, such as Nagcarlan, Rizal and part of Liliw. Several places have been considered by many people to be mysterious or miraculous. Temporal and spiritual healings are being practiced. Pilgrims believe that there are some similarities between these places and those that are in Jerusalem thus, the name “The new Jerusalem of the Philippines”. Today there are more than 70 religious sects practicing their beliefs and rituals in Dolores. Twelve years after, we found ourselves in a noon mass at the Our Lady of Angels Cathedral in LA. From the onset, the presiding priest reminds us of the significance of the day and how it impacted our lives. His homily was a very touching one as he brings us to his recollection of 12 years ago. The Cathedral was still being built and was under construction at that time. Upon hearing the tragic news, he felt the need to gather the workers and watch the news unfold on a small black and white TV. He also felt the need for prayers and urgently decided to draw the construction workers around him for some serious prayers. The priest recalled the facial expressions of the workers were that of shock and disbelief. In its truest sense, there was a need for the “911” God. The days following the dreadful day saw quite an upsurge in church attendance. After witnessing the Sept 11 tragedy, THERE WAS A URGENT NEED TO KNOW GOD. Why is it that some people only remember God when lost, in pain, in trouble or when their emotions are at the lowest? Why do we only know Him only when we need Him? Why? entrust to our Blessed Mother, the needs of the Church and of the whole world. Jessica Lucila "Gigi" Gonzales Reyes MANILA - Jessica Lucila "Gigi" Gonzales Reyes, former chief of staff of Senate Minority Leader Juan Ponce Enrile, was supposed to return to the Philippines last September 3 but did not come back. Speaking to radio dzMM, Bureau of Immigration officer-in-charge Siegfred Mison confirmed that Reyes left Manila last August 31 at 7:50 p.m. via Cebu Pacific flight 5J 362 bound for Macau. "We have no record of her coming back. She has a ticket coming back but I don't think she has used it to come back because we have no record of anyone using her name on September 3," he said in the interview. Reyes is the former chief of staff of Enrile, one of the senators being implicated in the pork barrel scam involving businesswoman Janet Lim Napoles. Reyes left the Philippines two days after the Philippine Daily Inquirer released a story quoting a witness who claimed to have personally delivered priority development assistance funds to Reyes. On Thursday, pork scam whistleblower Benhur Luy told the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee hearing that the chiefs of staff of senators and congressmen personally got cash from Napoles as part of their cut. Mison said there is no standing hold departure order or watch list order against Reyes. Thus, she was allowed to leave the country. He said even a lookout bulletin issued by the justice secretary will not prevent someone from leaving the country. "Nung una mahirap kasi bago sila dito. Ang unang factor is environment, malamig at the same time yung pagkain," said meat cutter Lloyd Sobrino. Many of them are worried about employment as most Filipinos in Saddlebrook have work contracts expiring in October. Some, meantime, are already worried about the upcoming winter. "Iniisip ko kasi maraming pang dadating, marami pang dapat paglaanan kaya iniisip ko lagi dapat nag-tatabi para pag may nangaingailangan sa pamilya ko o ako man, mga importanteng bibilhin, at least mayroon akong nadudukot," he explained. This mentality, of not settling for what he had and striving to be different led to some of Heaven's unconventional offerings to their customers. "Naisip ko kasi pag aasahan namin yung oras na 8 to 9 eh mayroon pa kaming mga client na dapat makuha. Yung mga office workers, students na wala nang panahong magpaganda kasi ang salon hanggang 9 o'clock lang. So doon ako nag-decide na kahit bago lang kami, magbukas kami hanggang 12, minsan hanggang ala una na nang madaling araw," Aparice said. Heaven's salon also has a daily lunch and dinner buffet for his customers while they wait. "Parang giving back the blessings na din, ginawa kong free na lang yung food," Aparice said. Aparice still couldn't believe that all that hardwork, sweeping floors before the first customer came in till after the last one left, paid off. "Ang sarap pala. Yung parang nararamdaman ko na, 'ito ba yung pinagpaguran ko?' Lumagay sa isip ko, kailangan magamit ko pa to para "Nung nagasawa ako, wala talaga akong alam. Pero sabi nga nila, lahat tayo may talento at doon ko lang nadiscover na mayroon pala akong talent," admitted Besana. But being unconventional can lead to doubts and Besana, more often than not, gets dubious stares from people regarding her skills. "Sa may project 6, hindi sila ano sa iyo dahil hindi ka nila kakilala. Sabi ko 'ate, gupit po kayo!' tapos sabi niya, 'hindi naman kita kilala, marunong ka ba talaga? Swerte na ang makalimang customer kada araw," Besana said. So Davila took Besana to meet Aparice, in order to help further hone her skills, with the hope that it would erase some of the skepticism surrounding her. "Pag nagnenegosyo ka talaga, dapat alam mo yung negosyong tinayo mo. Kailangan alam mo lahat, unang-una yung technique nang paggugupit," Aparice told Besana. "Dapat mayroon ka ring fixed na price, hindi mataas pero hindi rin ganoon kababa," Aparice added. Besana watched Aparice as she demonstrated techniques and styles on cutting hair. She also taught Besana how to properly apply dye on one's hair so that Besana can offer her customers more than just a haircut. "Kailangan laging may bago, bagong matutunan bawat araw," said Aparice. Aparice also gave Besana various salon equipment to further establish herself as a walking salon. The Onat Diaz-directed film, which opens on October 2, marks the first team-up of both actresses. This is also the first time Rivera is starring in an ABS-CBN-backed project. Actress Marian Rivera.-- File photo MANILA -- ABS-CBN viewers will see more of GMA-7 star Marian Rivera in the coming weeks, as the actress gears up for the premiere of her Star Cinema-produced film, "Kung Fu Divas." At the sidelines of a bloggers' conference held Thursday for the action-comedy flick, the 29-year-old actress confirmed she is set to appear in at least one Kapamilya program as part of the movie's promotional campaign. Asked if there is a particular ABS-CBN show she wishes to appear on, Rivera said, "Kahit saan naman pwede, basta papayagan ako ng network ko." The film is a co-production among the two lead stars, Star Cinema, Reality Entertainment, and The O&Co. Picture Factory Inc. On Thursday, Rivera related that her recent visit to ABSCBN isn't the first time she has been inside the Quezon City headquarters. She recalled being an intern in the human resources divi- sion of the Kapamilya network in 2004. "Hindi ko na matandaan, basta nag-OJT (on-the-job training) ako dito halos dalawang buwan. Taga-xerox lang naman, hayaan niyo na! 'Diba gano'n naman talaga pag OJT, inuutusan? Mag-sixerox, mag-ta-type, so 'yun 'yung na-experience ko," she said, laughing. As to her experience returning to the same ABS-CBN building as a sought-after actress, Rivera said, "Syempre, nakakatuwa dahil ang sarap ng pagtanggap nila, ang babait ng mga tao sa akin dito, so nakakatuwa." Asked if she felt nervous about her visit, the actress added, "Hindi siguro kaba. More on na-excite, more on saya 'yung pakiramdam dahil finally eh makikilala 'yung mga taga-rito." Noting the numerous starring roles of another GMA-7 star, her long-time partner Dingdong Dantes, in Star Cinema projects, Rivera expressed confidence that this won't be her last time collaborating with ABS-CBN. "Natutuwa ako na may mga ganitong pagkakataon na binibigay sa artista sa kabila para makatrabaho ng kabila. Nakikita ng mga tao na, 'Ay, wala namang...' May kumpetisyon, alam naman natin 'yan, pero nang dahil sa mga ganitong pangyayari, nawawala 'yung wall. "Ibig sabihin nagiging... nagkakaisa-isa tayo para maging maganda 'yung proyekto, magkasundusundo. Kaya nagpapasalamat ako na may mga ganitong pagkakataon," she said. Direk Jeffrey also had to cancel his planned participation at the Toronto International Film Festival, where he was invited to screen his film "Ekstra." All because of the hectic taping schedules. If it's any consolation to the acclaimed indie and serye filmmaker, he has fulfilled his dream project to direct a movie starring Vilma Santos. Replacing the withdrawn projects are "Boy Golden," to be directed by Chito Rono and starring ER Ejercito, and Regal Entertainment's "Let’s Take A Chance," to be directed by Jun Lana and starring Carla Abellana, JC de Vera, and Tom Rodriguez. Carla of "My Husband's Lover" has described this project which she co-stars with Tom as "a love story [with a little] kilig” - this time, with no character in the way like Dennis Trillo's. Mutya Datul is Miss Supranational 2013 By Mon Torralba Amidst the ugly news of the pork barrel scandal and the MNLF Zamboanga attack arises a winning story on personality and beauty. Miss Philippines’ Mutya Datul brought us pride as she topped 82 other contestants to win the Miss Supranational 2013, the first-ever to be won by a Filipina. She emerged the winner of the pageant held last September 6 in Minsk, Belarus. And to add more Filipino pride, Miss Canada’s Suzette Herch nandez, also a Filipina, was among the top 20. Much more than beauty, winners are also judged on their personality. And Mutya also emerged as the pageant’s Miss Personality winner. But who is this Supra woman that is representing our beloved Philippines? Cinderella Story. Mutya Datul is not a novice Mutya found herself with a team of trainers who helped her hone her Q & A and walking skills. She worked hard on the gym to tone up her muscles and develop a tighter waistline. in the beauty contest field. Even when she was living in the province, Mutya would join pageants, big and small, just to raise funds for her family. She won most of them including Miss Isabela Tourism 2011. Winning pageants meant she could continue her studies as an IT student at Isabela State University Iligan Campus and support her mother who needed regular medication for a blood disorder. At one point, Mutya became the family’s lone breadwin- ner when her father, a policeman, was shot and unable to work. She competed in her first national beauty pageant at the Mutya ng Pilipinas 2012, befitting her name. Unfortunately, she did not win the title but the experience urged her to stay in course and decided to stay in Manila to try to work as a model to earn easy money to send home to her struggling family in Northern Isabella. Inspired and challenged, Ready she was when she joined the prestigious Binibining Pilipinas 2013. Her trainers were hoping for the top Binibining Pilipinas Universe crown but Mutya was more than happy to win the Miss Supranational title as she wanted the prize money for her family. Part of the money went to her mother’s treatment; she has since recovered from her illness. Mutya was also able to redo their humble home in Sta Maria, renovating the wooden, leaky structure into a sturdy, concrete residence. Her father has also healed from his gunshot wound and is now back on the police force. What money can do indeed! The Salagubang or Beetle Walk. Although she grew up poor, Mutya was not a deprived child. She would spend her days after school playing in the rice fields with her friends, watching the fireflies come out at dusk and catching salagubang or beetles to play with. Perhaps this is where she got the inspiration for her signature walk: The Salagubang or Beetle Walk, the very same walk that helped her defeat 82 other nations in Miss Supranational 2013. She returns to the Philippines with the bacon. With the trophy, sash and crown. No longer will she be salagubang but rather, radiant as the salaginto (goldbug), wearing her brilliant andwinning personality and hopefully harvesting more gold for her family. Salain ang ginto, Mutya! September 2013 24 Lifestyle TO ADVERTISE please email at [email protected] Eat less processed foods, live more It’s disheartening to note that the American Institute of Cancer Research estimated that about 40 percent of US breast cancer cases (and probably other diseases) could be prevented if only people made wiser, healthier lifestyle choices. If only we took charge of our own health. From the mouths of the experts come these allnatural tips on how to lick disease, live long, and live more (as can be gleaned from www.mercola.com): • Starve cancer and obesity. Avoid frying or charbroiling; boil, poach or steam your food instead. Beef up your diet with cancerfighting whole foods, herbs, spices, and supplements such as broccoli, curcumin (an orange-yellow colored powder which has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits), and resveratrol (an excellent source is red wine). • Avoid or reduce your intake of processed foods, sugar/fructose, and grainbased foods. That includes whole unprocessed organic grains as well because they tend to rapidly break down and increase your insulin level. Sugar, especially fructose (fruit sugar), feeds cancer cells and promotes their growth. • Avoid sweetened drinks (whether they’re sweetened with sugar or artificial sweeteners). Replace them with plenty of pure, clean water. • Increase high quality fat, reduce protein. Think about reducing your protein levels to one gram per kilogram of lean body weight. Replace excess protein with high quality fats, such as organic eggs, high quality meats, coconut oil (which is aplenty in our country), avocados, and nuts (like macadamia, which is higher in fat and lower in protein). • Drink a half to a whole quart of organic green vegetable juice daily. Invest in a good blender and discover the joys of juicy. • Eat fresh, locally grown food. We can’t stress enough that fresh is best. • Avoid unfermented soy products. Some studies show that soy appears to work in concert with human estrogen to increase breast cell proliferation, which increases the chances for mutations and cancerous cells. • Normalize your Omega-3 to Omega-6 fats ratio. Normalize your ratio of Omega3 to Omega-6 fats by taking a high-quality krill oil and reducing your intake of processed vegetable oils. • Make exercise a regular habit . Cancer organizations highly prescribe regular exercise to reduce the risk of cancer. Exercise has been found to lower insulin levels, which creates a low sugar environment that discourages the growth and spread of cancer cells. Research indicates that exercise can help trigger apoptosis (cell death) in cancer cells. • Optimize your Vitamin D level. Scientific evidence proves that you can decrease your risk of cancer by more than half simply by optimizing your Vitamin D levels with appropriate sun exposure. • Get plenty of natural Vitamin A. There’s solid proof that Vitamin A also plays a Consumerline by Ching Alano (Reprinted from Philippine Star) role in helping prevent breast cancer. Best to get it from Vitamin A-rich foods, rather than a supplement. The best sources are organic egg yolks, raw butter, raw whole milk, and beef or chicken liver. • Make sure you’re not iodine deficient. There’s strong evidence linking iodine deficiency with breast cancer. Iodine has potent anticancer properties. • Optimize your sleep. Make sure you’re getting enough restorative vitamin Zzzz. Poor sleep can interfere with your melatonin production, which is associated with an increased risk of insulin resistance and weight gain, both of which promote the growth of cancer. • Limit your exposure to toxins. Reduce your exposure to environmental toxins such as pesticides, herbicides, household chemical cleaners, synthetic air fresheners, and toxic cosmetics. Avoid BPA, phthalates, and other xenoestrogens — estrogen-like compounds that have been linked to increased breast cancer risk. • Limit your exposure to radiation. Protect yourself against radiation produced by cell phones, towers, base stations, and Wi-Fi stations, as well as minimize your exposure to radiation-based medical scans, including dental x-rays, CT scans, and mammograms. • Avoid synthetic hormone replacement therapy. Breast cancer is an estrogen -related cancer, and according to a study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, breast cancer rates for women dropped in tandem with decreased use of hormone replacement therapy. • Manage stress. Addressing stress and unresolved emotional issues may be more important than the physical ones. Authorities assert that stress (from all causes) is a major contributor to disease. They note with concern that 85 percent of disease is caused by emotional factors. As they say, it’s not what you eat but what’s eating you up that could impact your health. Over the last 37 years, she has considered Fiesta Filipina as her second family. Her loyalty and commitment to the group have been proven over the years as a dancer, travel chaperone on Fiesta’s international trips, technical director, Board Member and the Chairperson of Miss Manila (since 1991). As Chair for Miss Manila, she has been successfully raising money to help pay for the mortgage of the Fiesta Filipina Centre for the Arts. Since Fiesta Filipina is a non-profit organization, that adds to some relief and for which we are truly grateful. Through her years with Fiesta, she has been able to share her passion for the group with her own family. Her two sons Anthony and Edward have been dancers, just as her younger sister Liberty. As the Editor and Publisher for Balita Newspaper (with her late husband Ruben Cusipag), the well known newspaper in the Filipino Community in the GTA, it is amazing that she still has time for Fiesta.
