From the Head of College From the Head of Primary Throughout 2012 it has been a delight to move around the Campuses and witness a highly active, engaged and positive learning environment in action. I commend our students for taking full advantage of the vast array of opportunities available to them. The commencement of 2012 saw the opening of the much anticipated Kindergarten and new parent carpark. Although there were a few moments of anticipation from both the Kindergarten students and their parents as they commenced their first days in schooling, this was rapidly overcome as the students settled into their new routines and engaged in the many exciting and stimulating activities. As the year progressed the Kindergarten students have grown in independence and have been the beneficiaries of a Kindergarten programme developed to meet their individual needs and the dedication and commitment of the Kindergarten staff. The year commenced with the new Design and Technology Centre which offers a range of different technologies used by the commercial world, adding greatly to the learning opportunities available to students on the Senior Campus. In late February The Tiny Tartan Kindergarten opened and is a wonderful facility providing our youngest students with a very interactive and colourful learning environment. The standard of the facility, its programme offering and staffing was highlighted in The Tiny Tartan Kindergarten gaining the highest possible rating in being accredited in May/June, exceeded national standards rating in all seven categories. This is a wonderful endorsement given at such an early stage of operation. Pleasingly the 2011 OP results were strong, as were the Years Three, Five, Seven & Nine, 2012 NAPLAN results, which is a great credit to these students and their teachers. Students achieved well in the University of New South Wales English, Mathematics and Science Tests which provide another indication of how students are faring academically against students across Australia, and some 23 other countries. In total, 177 students gained a Credit in one of the three tests, with 49 Distinctions and two High Distinction’s. Across Creative Arts and Sport, students were again highly active. It is pleasing to see the great progress that is being made in these areas as they compete in their respective areas. The student body and College community in general, were highly active in supporting groups and charities in need. In total the College community raised in excess of $5870.80 which is an excellent effort. A special thank you to the wonderful staff at the College, teaching and support staff, who are extremely dedicated and give so generously of their time to support our students across the campuses and the breadth of a TSAC education. The College is also very fortunate to receive wonderful support for the parent body in many and varied ways. A special thank you to the College P&F, Sports Support Group and CAST who give generously of their time to support the College each year. Congratulations to all students on the progress made and the many achievements that have occurred throughout the year, and to the College community for a very positive and successful year. Mr Steve Croft Head of College 2 : the springfield anglican college 2012 The Primary Campus students throughout 2012 experienced many outstanding accomplishments. Across all year levels students have excelled both individually and collectively in their academic and extra curricular activities. Students from Kindergarten to Year Six took advantage of the new iPads and Notebooks and continued developing their IT skills through the Computer Lab and new technology. Successful results in NAPLAN, ICAS Assessments, school based testing and individual and group activities have been acknowledged throughout the year. Congratulations to all the students who have achieved both personal and group successes. The Year Book is just a glimpse of the many activities and learning experiences that the students undertake throughout the year. Pictures and articles provide an insight into the College culture and the busy year past; filled with learning experiences, challenges and fun. As a community, we should all look back on 2012 as a year of growth, development, achievements, encouragement and support. As a College community we have a lot to be proud of and thankful for. Thank you to the team of dedicated staff, both teaching and support, and to the many parents who volunteer their time graciously. Congratulations to all on the Primary Campus for a very successful and positive year. Mrs Tania Brewer Head of Primary from the college captains : tsac From College Captains (Year Twelve) This year Jacob and I had the privilege of leading the College as College Captains. It has been an exciting and successful year, full of many great achievements on both the Primary and Senior Campuses. Throughout the past year, TSAC has grown tremendously, accomplishing a wide range of achievements. The opening of the new Design and Technology Centre on the Senior Campus is one of many additions to the College. It has effectively contributed to our learning experiences and provided us with the appropriate facilities to effectively complete our tasks. Luckily for me, sport is a huge part of TSAC life. I look back at all of the sporting adventures we have had over the year and I feel very proud. From school sports carnivals to TAS carnivals, to weekly TAS sporting fixtures, to the many different carnivals we were invited to attend, I will remember them all. We have had our ups and downs, our successes and our failures, but we came out of them as better people. Success has not only been achieved in the field of Academics but in the Creative Arts and Sports Departments. The Creative Arts Department have claimed top placings in countless competitions and events throughout the year. In the Sports Department, a record number of teams succeeded in reaching the finals over the three trimesters. The annual Inter-Clan Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals were definitely the highlights of the year, where the school came together to compete in an electrifying atmosphere. At the beginning of the year, the formal seemed so far away. As it drew closer, it was a reminder that the end of our schooling lives was drawing closer too. For many, it was the highlight of the year. It was a time for celebration with our Year Twelve family. Being a member of this year’s Senior cohort has been a wonderful experience I will treasure forever. It has been a privilege to share my last year with a fantastic group of people. I wish you all the best for the future and thank you for making this year one to remember. I will miss you and the rest of the school dearly. A great year doesn’t come without the hard work of all staff, students and parents. A big thank you goes to Mr Croft, teachers and staff for making the school year what it was. Thank you to all members of the student body who made it a pleasure to attend school every day, and thank you to the parents who sacrificed their time and effort getting us to school every day. It was an honour to be your College Captain, leading such a charismatic group of people. Congratulations for all of your achievements this year, and I wish you the best of luck for next year. Jennifer Lo College Captain “Enjoy this year because before you know it, it will be over.” These were the words of advice offered by so many at the beginning of this year. How true they were. Looking back over the year, I find it hard to believe that we managed to fit so many things in. The Swimming Carnival was our first chance to stand up and lead the school as Seniors. I believe we stood up to that challenge and we didn’t look back. Go Robertson. You seem to see things very differently when you are a Senior. I think it is because you know that you are doing something for the last time as a student and it made them all the more special and important. Of course the year will be remembered for not only sport but the many other adventures we have had. There were excursions, barista courses, music eisteddfods, teacher/student sporting competitions, barbeques, driver education courses and, of course, the formal. This has been a year of hard work and challenges but it has also been a year of enjoyment and rewards. None of it could have been possible without the wonderful staff members we have supporting us. They have pushed us, kept us focused and laughed with us. We will remember them all. Although it has been the biggest honour to be College Captain this year, I don’t feel that I led you, but that we travelled the journey side by side. As we prepare to leave our College family and start the next phase of our lives, I wish you all the best for the future. Jacob Thian College Captain From College Captains (Year Six) Overall, serving the College as a College Captain for 2012 has been a great pleasure; and we speak for every leader in saying that it has been a growing experience for the future. We have gained confidence in speaking in front of an audience and with the help of the Lion Hearted programme, we now know that to be a leader, you need to include others, you need mateship and you need to encourage, be helpful, and participate. Our advice to next year’s College Captains; would be to make sure you set a positive example for the younger students and to show confidence and most importantly, to have a great time, just like we did. Zoe Christofis and Scott Jackson Year Six College Captains the springfield anglican college 2012 : 3 tsac : the board of directors & advisory Board of Directors & Advisory Back Row:Dr Murray Evans, Mr Ian Turner, Mr Jack Duff, Mr Joe McMeniman Front Row: Mr Barry Kelly, Mr Steve Croft, Mrs Ngaire Tagney 4 : the springfield anglican college 2012 from the leadership team : tsac From the Leadership Team 2012 has been a year of firsts in the life of The Springfield Anglican College. With new facilities in the Design Technology Centre and the roll out of iPads to all Year Twelve students, the style of teaching is changing from modelling and leading learning to facilitating learning and mentoring students as they investigate for themselves. A new programme for the Year Nine students is the Rite Journey which has asked questions of these young men and women about what it means to be responsible young adults. Again these lessons have been taught in a new and innovative way that encourages all students to participate in ways they are comfortable. It has been my pleasure to witness the growth in opportunities and facilities on offer and enthusiasm of students to actively embrace and readily adapt to doing something that is new. One of the greatest advantages of youth is the ability to embrace change. However, while the methods used have been new, the values they promote remain consistent, in that, as a College we want to deliver students who are resilient, respectful and take responsibility for their learning and their future. As the College grows we rely ever more on the students to promote these values and almost without fault our students represent the College in a positive way and respect each other and themselves. The number of academic and learning opportunities available for students throughout their schooling, particularly in the Senior Years, has been evident more than ever this year, as students have availed themselves of these opportunities. Students are very fortunate to have a number of pathways which can lead them to their chosen career goal and it is exciting to see students gaining a clearer understanding of these paths in order to set goals for themselves. Past students have also realised their ability for further study, with well over 60% of Year Twelve students in 2011 going on to complete further study in 2012. During 2012, staff have worked to implement and develop the TSAC Learner Behaviours Reflective and Self-Directed Learner, Critical and Creative Thinker, Active Investigator, Effective Communicator, Technology Savvy, Personally and Socially Aware – within their lessons. Research suggested that skills such as these are becoming increasingly more important for employability beyond school and they will become an even stronger focus in 2013 as we work to prepare students to enter the “real world”. To all our students, congratulations on a most impressive year. Technology has certainly become more prominent in 2012, with the introduction of iPads and Apple Macs. Students and teachers have embraced the possibilities of these resources to enhance and further their understanding of the content. Such technology certainly has enormous potential in assisting students to become “Critical and Creative Thinkers” and “Active Investigators”. Mr Richard Clark Head of Student Services Mrs Wendy Jurss Head of Curriculum While we often hear of the negatives about young people’s attitudes and behaviour we should also remember that they can often be inspiring and will be the leaders of the future. the springfield anglican college 2012 : 5 tsac : from the leadership team From the Leadership Team 2012 has been the most successful year for the College’s Sporting Programme. The College has won three TAS Premierships, one CISSSA Premiership and we have had 91 teams competing. This has been due to the dedicated efforts of many members of the community - parents, students, teachers and coaches. The Tennis, Athletics and Swimming Academies have continued to grow and we are now starting to see the significant impact they have had on the success of the College JTAS and TAS teams. We have established a place for ourselves in a variety of inter-school competitions throughout Brisbane, and 67 individuals have experienced success at Regional, State and at National level. Furthermore, Megan Gianotti competed at the Australian Olympic trials, and Larissa Chambers who competed and medalled at the Oceania Athletics Games. The Equestrian Team won the State Showhorse and Showman competition, and placed third in the Teams event. Amy Bentley, Shantay Morris and Shilah Morris were also selected to represent Queensland for the Queensland Equestrian team at the Australian Interschool Equestrian Championships. At the TAS Swimming Carnival, TSAC Girls won both the U13 Girls and the Open Girls, with the College coming fourth overall. The JTAS Cross Country team placed third overall, and second in the girls. The JTAS Athletics team and the TAS Athletics team finishing in second and third place respectively. The 13 Years Girls, 15 Years Boys and the 16 Years Girls all finished in first place. Both Boys and Girls Athletics teams won their percentage trophies, and Larissa Chambers broke the 100m and 200m records. The Year Eight Boys Tennis team, Year Eight Boys Futsal team, Year Ten Boys Tennis team and the Open A Girls Tennis team all won a Premiership. The JTAS teams continued to be successful with the Year Five Softball team and the Year Five Rugby team going undefeated throughout the season. 2012 has also seen the range of sporting opportunities continue to grow and develop. I would like to thank all the parents, staff and coaches for their continued support in developing the College Sport Programme. I would especially like to thank Mrs Tina Gianotti and the Sports Parent Support Group, Mrs Christine Janke, and the HPE Staff, in particular Mr James Patmore on the Primary Campus. Finally, I would like to congratulate all the students who have been involved in a most successful year. I look forward to sharing with you the success of the Sporting Programme in 2013. Mr Andrew Holmes Head of Sport & HPE 6 : the springfield anglican college 2012 It was a great pleasure to join the team at TSAC as Head of Creative Arts in Term Four, 2012. The students, staff and parents made me feel welcome in the very first week. I arrived to find the Creative Arts students actively and enthusiastically involved in a wide range of disciplines including dance troupes and clubs, drama, chamber ensembles, choirs, concert bands, string ensembles, rock bands and the visual arts. A warm welcome to Shannon Marshal, who joined the team as our brass specialist teacher and it is also a pleasure to announce that Josephine Pollicina has been appointed on a permanent basis in the specialty area of strings. I’m sure our students will benefit enormously from their expertise. The depth and breadth of activities on offer to the students at TSAC within the Creative Arts is a feature of which we can be immensely proud. The dedicated Creative Arts staff spent many hours each week preparing, choreographing, and conducting these activities. Six staff and 54 students toured Sydney and were involved in a range of activities designed to develop performance skills. Seven of our dance, instrumental and vocal ensembles received Places or Gold awards in Festivals and Eisteddfods this year. In 2012 it can certainly be said that the results speak for themselves! Our Drama and Visual Arts students had many opportunities to see professional performances and exhibitions throughout the year, including a visit from Artslink to the Senior Campus in Term Four. Exposure to all the arts at a professional level is an important part of the Creative Arts experience at TSAC. I am looking forward to guiding the continuing growth and development across the Creative Arts at TSAC. 2013 promises to be an exciting and innovative year! Dr Philippa Robinson Head of Creative Arts from the leadership team : tsac Touching Heaven, changing earth This is the refrain of an old worship song and there have been times in Chapel worship when this seemed to have happened. All this year we have been trying to engage with God in worship – on Fridays we have Primary Chapel and on Thursdays we alternate between Senior and Middle School Chapel. For our Worship, accessible and simple liturgy is used by staff and students using a revised Chapel Booklet. The musical Worship at Senior School has mostly accompanied tracks from great Christian bands. However, the embryonic Chapel Rock Band has made some bold appearances. Various College Ensembles have played for entry and exit music. Prayer is offered for the world, the Nation, the College Community and for each other. The Bible teaching has covered attributes of God, attributes of a Christian, Parables of Jesus, Miracles of Jesus, The Lord’s Prayer, The Beatitudes, and stories from the Old and New Testament. Primary Chapel follows a simpler but similar pattern. Children’s choruses have been introduced accompanied by guitar and sometimes ukuleles. The Gideon’s visited the Senior Campus and gave a New Testament to every Year Eight student. The Reverend John Deng visited the School and gave an impassioned plea for funds for an Anglican Health Centre to be built in South Sudan. The College also raised money to support Ipswich Cares and the Archbishop’s Emergency Flood Appeal. As College Chaplain I have had a one to one interview with every Year Twelve student, with each interview concluding with a little gift of a booklet called ‘Journey into Life.’ The latter has walked around the World to foster Christian unity. Eleven students attended the conference from the College and came back full of enthusiasm and with growth in their faith. I have been invited to Religious And Values Education (RAVE) classes to field first order questions. Some RAVE classes ran a short series of Confirmation Class material with Year Ten and Year Twelve students. In these classes a documentary presented by John Dickson focused on the history of the New Testament. There was even a College Worship session in Sydney with the Music Tour students. The story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego has frequent references to musical instruments. The musicians obliged with a loud chord every time the list was mentioned in the Bible account. This story can be found in Daniel Chapter 3. The worship and pastoral ministry has helped draw the College Community closer together with a very high degree of unsolicited care shown by staff and students for each other. There is a measure of enthusiasm in the participation in Chapel worship. The College is genuinely a family pulling together. Reverend Chris Boyce College Chaplain Mr Tom McPherson organised a highly successful Anglican School’s Student’s Network Conference entitled ‘1 LIFE 2 LIVE’. Amongst the speakers were Bishop Geoff Smith and Sam Clear. the springfield anglican college 2012 : 7 tsac : staff 2012 Staff 2012 Back Row: Darren Sime, Thomas McPherson, Phil Kefford, Jarrah Newton, Allan Yates, Ben Johnston, Matt Papinczak, Martin Brownlow 4th Row: Leanne Zendler, Laura Bain, Teresa Jenkins, Kristie Ahern, Nola Van Zanden, Andrea Hogan, Richard Clark, James Patmore, Hilton Whitehorne, Andy Holmes 3rd Row: Allison Lovesey, Christine Janke, Chloe Williamson, Sarah Harwood, Robyn Behr, Melody Lawler, Michele Munn, Helena Massey, Sherina Parker, Lisa Christofis, Lorraine Breingan, Reverend Chris Boyce, Wendy Jurss, Rachel Davidson, Carla McGlynn, Sandra Hill, Debbie Johnson, Jeff Coleman, Kathy McKinnon, Tania Brewer 2nd Row: Ann Haines-Shipman, Kathy Williams, Leanne Cartwright, Larissa Brown, Melanie Ellis, Wendy Hall, Kara Nicholson, Grier Elliot, Jane Pratt, Fleur Toussaint, Laura Pinnell, Kerrie Jacob, Sheryl Prins, Steve Croft Front Row: Joanne Gillespie, Judy Morris, Petrice Pascoe, Dali Jovanovic, Allana Dorman, Maya Kumar, Bonita Marshall, Gerry Oxborrow, Thea McLean, Allison Alvisio, Toni Myers, Ros Taylor, Jing Zhou, Kym Fraser, Tracey Palmer Absent: Judy Jackson, Vanessa Jordanovich, Megan Ellis, Kate Frewin, Michael King, Patti Thompson, Wendy Tai, Danielle Lennon, Kerry Hogrefe, Adrienne Jensen, Karen Garton, Josephine Pollicina, Linda Brummell, Danielle Kennedy 8 : the springfield anglican college 2012 2012 staff qualifications : tsac Primary Campus Administration Tania Brewer..........................Head of Primary.....................................................................DipEd (Prim), BEd, MEdSt, DipProfCouns, GCAppLing, MACE Sandra Hill..............................Admin Officer - Curriculum Support.....................................DipChildcare & Education Kerry Hogrefe.........................Receptionist - Primary Campus Christine Janke.......................Admin Assistant to Extra-Curricular......................................ADip Community Recreation Allison Alvisio........................Uniform Shop Coordinator.....................................................Cert. Richard Lawson the springfield anglican college 2012 : 11 success : primary campus overview and awards Primary Campus Overview Primary Awards 2012 commenced with the opening of The Tiny Tartan Kindergarten. The inaugural students may have started with some trepidation as they said good-bye to Mum or Dad for the first time, but they quickly became members of the Primary Campus community and enjoyed their weekly visits to the Library, Music and Chinese rooms. The Kindergarten programme has ensured the students will enter into their Prep year wellprepared and eager to learn. Character Award Year Four........Jacob Sim, Bronwyn Speirs Year Five.........Eli Myers, Shahira Jaikaran Year Six............Bruno Aleixo, Paris Koutsis Throughout the year, the students from Kindergarten to Year Six embraced the new iPads and Notebooks, providing new learning opportunities to complement the units of study. As digital natives, many of the students have enjoyed demonstrating and sharing their computer knowledge to both their peers and teachers. 2012 also saw growth in the opportunities provided to the students through the extra curricular activities and clubs. The students achieved both personal and group success in their chosen activities and represented the College admirably. The teaching and support staff also continued learning through a variety of professional development opportunities provided both outside and within the College. The staff share their collective knowledge, experience and wisdom with each other regularly which enables them to provide learning experiences that are creative, productive, up to date and individualised to meet the needs of the students. With the introduction of the Ukuleles, the dynamic of music lessons has changed for the better. While students are learning to improve their aural and sight-singing skills, they now also have the opportunity to learn an instrument that is designed to accompany singing. From Prep to Year Two, students learn to play the violin as this instrument comes in fractional sizes to accommodate all our students and helps to develop fine motor skills. We were pleased to be able to offer our Year Three students the choice of either the violin or the cello for the first time this year with a significant number of students electing to study the cello. In Year Four, students continue with the string instrument family with the viola and double bass introduced. The introduction of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments through a rotational programme in Year Five allows students to experience a great variety of instruments. At the end of the Year Five rotation, students decide in consultation with the Instrumental Music staff, which orchestral instrument is the most suitable for them to continue with in Year Six. The Kindergarten and Prep students have been welcome new visitors to the music room and have had lots of fun learning new songs and moving to the beat. Students in Years One, Two and Three have been building a strong foundation in aural skills and Solfege. Year Four and Five students have further developed their rhythmic skills in performance and dictation, while the Year Six students were given the opportunity to build their own instrument. Throughout 2012 there have been many opportunities for our Instrumental Music students to perform. In particular, the Cultural Morning Concerts were a great way for the students to showcase what they learnt in class to their family and friends. These opportunities helped the students to develop accuracy, confidence, self-motivation, discipline and teamwork skills. Students were also encouraged to extend on the work in Instrumental Music classes and join one of the many String Ensembles, Bands or Choirs here at the College. I would like to congratulate all the students in the Instrumental Music Programme on their hard work during not only their lessons but in the many hours of home practice. On behalf of the students, I would like to thank Ms Sherina Parker, Ms Josephine Pollicina, Dr Philippa Robinson, Mrs Sarah Harwood, Mr James Whiting and Ms Nozomi Omote for their dedication to maintaining and raising the very high standards of this programme. Thanks must also be given to the supportive parents who listen and encourage daily home practice, provide transportation to performances and for attending concerts. I look forward to seeing our students continue to progress and achieve success within the Instrumental Music Programme in 2013. the springfield anglican college 2012 : 13 success : creative arts, health and physical education Classroom Dance and Drama Health and Physical Education This year the Primary Dance Studio was equipped with Harlequin dance flooring, the result is a slipresistant surface, giving our young dancers confidence in developing more difficult choreography and movement. Classroom Dance saw Ballet Barres introduced and the French language take centre-stage during Term One. All Primary students from Year One to Six developed their ballet technique working on new ways of moving and controlling their bodies. Students from Kindergarten to Year Six have learnt and participated in a wide variety of skills and activities during Physical Education lessons in 2012. In Term Two all students revelled in the chance to perform; with Upper Primary students refining their Disco moves ready for the Black and White Disco. By the end of Term Two, Upper Primary was in choreography workshops and Lower Primary students had a great time learning their Bush Dance moves and had mixed it up to include some fun Jazz before Dance ended for 2012. The fun and creativity of Drama always inspires the students to dig deep and make new bonds with classmates as they get up close and personal in a game of “Banana Split” or try to decipher a whacky concoction of events during “Ina, Witha, Whiler”. Lower Primary had lessons to learn about tantrums and how to befriend a Giant (without him squashing your house); as well as enjoying puppet theatre with the Lighthouse Keeper and his family. Upper Primary students delved more deeply into the topic of child labour during the Industrial Revolution, travelling back in time and meeting characters and creating period based improvisation. They then became a network of historians debating whether Edmund Hillary or George Mallory was the first to conquer Everest. The TSAC Dance and Drama room is always full of life and energy, it is a fun place to visit and a great way to learn. 14 : the springfield anglican college 2012 Term One saw students in Prep to Year Three participate in a locomotive program, learning and establishing key skills such as running, skipping, hopping, throwing and catching. Year Four to Six students spent the first half of the term participating in a ‘Team Challenges’ unit. The second half of the term saw them take on a ‘Fitness is Fun’ unit, to help in preparation for the Inter-Clan Cross Country Carnival. Term Two saw Athletics take centre stage, with students from Years Three to Six participating in a track and field programme to learn key skills and techniques in the lead up to the Inter-Clan Athletics Carnival. Students from Prep to Year Two also participated in an athletics unit, with a modified athletics programme of running, jumping and throwing skills. Students in Prep to Year Three also spent numerous lessons learning their classes’ bush dance in preparation for the annual Primary Campus Bush Dance. Term Three saw Olympic fever hit, with students in Years Three to Six completing an ‘Olympic Games’ unit, learning key skills and game play of a number of major Olympic sports. Students in Prep to Year Two participated in an Auskick programme, as well as continuing to develop their key motor skills in their Perceptual Motor Programme classes. The final term of the year saw students head to Waterworx to participate in swimming lessons, that focused on stroke correction, development and confidence in the water. More established swimmers also learnt techniques and strategies to help them in a racing environment. Prep to Year Two students participated in a ‘In2 Cricket’ unit, whilst Year Three and Four were involved in an ‘Introduction to JTAS Sports’ unit, to help them learn the key skills of the sports they will play at JTAS level in 2013. Year Five students participated in an ‘International Sports’ unit, whilst Year Six students were involved in an ‘Introduction to TAS Sports’ unit. Kindergarten students enjoyed their weekly classes, with their lessons focusing on establishing and learning basic gross motor skills, through a wide range of fun and engaging activities. Lessons focused on developing key skills such as running, hopping, jumping, throwing, catching, skipping, kicking and working cooperatively with other students. The Kindergarten students shared their enthusiasm and skill development through their smiles, laughter and participation. languages / resource centre : success Chinese Resource Centre In 2012, with growing class numbers on the Primary Campus, students from Kindergarten to Year Three welcomed their new Chinese teacher Ms Tai, while students from Year Four to Year Six continued their course with Ms Zhou. In this the National Year of Reading, students on the Primary Campus have been offered many opportunities to develop and experience reading. In February, we launched the National Year of Reading with guest author, Susan Skowronski. This along with the foundation of our Champions Read photo wall in the library set the pace for a busy year. Apart from learning skills in listening, speaking and reading Chinese in the classroom, Year Four and Year Six students had an opportunity to perform Chinese at the Cultural Mornings. In May, two Year Five students, Shane Bradley and Georga Boegheim, and two Year Six students, Jenna Behr and Valentina Vilayrack, competed in the annual state-wide Chinese speaking competition, organised by the Confucious Institute at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and the Chinese Language Teachers’ Association Queensland (CLTAQ) Inc. Congratulations to all four students for their dedication and performance on the day. Special congratulations to Shane and Jenna who both received a merit prize. During March, Year Four students visited the Ipswich Library facilities and spoke with Ipswich Library librarian, Lucy Baker. Excitement rose during Term Two with six new iPads and six notebook computers were purchased for use within the school. These soon became an integral part of the programmes in many year levels, with a further twenty one iPads being purchased in Term Three so that a full class set existed. Renowned Australian author Jackie French spent some time with us in May. Students from Years Three to Six were enthralled with stories about mischievous and devious wombats and how she came to be a writer due to their antics. June saw TSAC selected from within the Ipswich schools region to host a visiting poet as part of the Ipswich Poetry Feast. Local poet Graham Nunn further extended our budding poets with his knowledge and expertise. Students then completed their poems to enter into the competition. thank Ms. Jacob for her time and effort in my absence to provide these experiences for the students. Our annual Book Fair in October was again well supported with many new resources being added to our collections. We are endeavouring to increase our class sets of novels and reading materials for class room use, so thank you to all parents and friends who once again gave their support. This year we opened our doors for two full days during the Book Fair to provide opportunity for ‘quiet’ purchasing and we hope you found that to be of assistance. 2012 has seen growth and development of the library facilities and a slight change in direction. With the developments being made in technology and the presentation and amount of information available to students, we are endeavouring to remain abreast with changes, whilst still keeping the balance of books and hands on reading material within reach. With the theme for 2013 being “Read Across the Universe” I think we are on the correct path to succeed. Ms Karen Garton Teacher Librarian The Premiers Reading Challenge was launched in June and completed by September. We concluded Term Two with a Book Expo assisted by “The Book Garden” with students and parents being able to purchase reading materials not generally available in the local book shops. Term Three saw Mrs Coupe fulfilling my role whilst I was on long service leave and I thank her for her work in keeping the reading happening at TSAC. A number of students registered for the MS Read-athon, and students were able to dress up for the character parade day in celebration of Book Week. Many activities existed through the week and I the springfield anglican college 2012 : 15 success : kindergarten Class: KH1 Class: KH2 Back: Mrs Andrea Hogan (Teacher), Mrs Petrice Pascoe (Teacher Aide) Back: Cameron Daley, Mrs Andrea Hogan (Teacher), Mrs Petrice Pascoe (Teacher Aide), Harvey Wilson Middle: Aston Luik, Emma Meins, Hayden Hines, Cooper Farrell-Thomas, Jackson Ward, Madison Savage, Zoe Smith, Roxy Martin-Phillips, Matilda Wilson, Isabella Valinoti Front: Braeden Burger, Mia Costello, Elizabeth Martin, Dakota Holmes, Michael Blake, Sean Foley, Fotini Kouklinos, Lachlan Awcock Middle: Ryan Cao, Jazmyn Tregenza, Isabella Valinoti, Sydnee Taylor, Cooper Farrell-Thomas, Elizabeth Martin, Levi Slee, Luke Pristash, Fotini Kouklinos, Dakota Holmes Front: Jade Hennessy, Emma Meins, Evie Cluff, Mia Costello, Riley Micallef, Isaac MacDougalMarshall, Owen Martin, Abbey Hipwell, Logan Kelly Absent: Cordelia Richards 16 : the springfield anglican college 2012 kindergarten : success Class: KP1 Class: KP2 Back: Mrs Jane Pratt (Teacher), Danijela Selena, Mrs Tracey Palmer (Teacher Aide), Annalise Kemp Back: Mrs Jane Pratt (Teacher), Amelia Crosby, Olivia Page-Munro, Mrs Tracey Palmer (Teacher Aide) Middle: Yaret Ziyambe, Sarah Kruger, Olivia Page-Munro, Melodie Ahern, Sommer Siepen, Owen Lane, Sophie Bale, Joseph Ferris-Neumann Middle: Amy Avauli, Isaac Barrett, Evangeline Dahya, Taylor Kelton, Byron Krause, Jayden Lemon, Kian Smith, Chloe Spethman, Devon Temple Front: Annie Jones, Jayden Lemon, Tristen Shephard, Isaac Barrett, Keira Westwood, Lachlan O’Connor, Georgia Holland, Kent Agung Front: Lilli Williams, Tahu Clarke, Jaytarin Sirisomphone, Liliana Beitz, Ciana Ong-Morton, Joseph Ferris-Neumann, Monique Watson, Charles Britt the springfield anglican college 2012 : 17 success : kindergarten Kindergarten The Kindergarten students have had an amazing year, filled with fun, laughter and experiencing new things. We started the year learning about colours, shapes and how to cut, paint and glue. We met Miss McGlynn and Buzzy Bee and enjoyed singing and dancing to her Ukulele. Miss Tai and her nodding sheep taught us to say our colours in Chinese. During PMP, Mr Patmore, helped us improve our hopping, jumping and balancing. The fire engine with ‘Fireman Sam’ made a surprise visit and reminded us to ‘get down low and go, go, go!’. Before we knew it, the Easter bunny had arrived and left his footprints in disguise. In Term Two we learnt about healthy eating and our five senses. The Five Food Group Man reminded us about good lunch boxes and eating a balanced diet. Mr Rigby, the dentist, taught us how to clean our teeth. The sunflowers we planted grew and grew always turning their ‘heads’ to face the sun. The Kindergarten was officially opened and we were very proud to display our pictures and show our achievements. It was very exciting to join the ‘Big School’ for our specialist lessons. Choosing our own books in the library made us feel very grown up. Mother’s Day was celebrated with a special Chapel service where we thanked our Mums for all the wonderful things they do for us. It was lovely to have Reverend Chris join us with his guitar and to bless our Mums. As the term concluded, the teachers were impressed with how well we were packing and unpacking our school bags. Term Three arrived with us studying animals, plants and creepy crawlies. We learnt about Australian animals and the Koala and Platypus puppets were fun to make. We met some characters from Letterland called Annie Apple, Dippy Duck and Clever Cat. We went to the computer lab and also had our own iPads where Charlie Bear, Thomas, and ABC Kids taught us about reading and spelling. It was very exciting watching our silkworms eat and grow big and fat until they spun lovely, yellow cocoons. Our Dads were invited to attend the Father’s Day Chapel service where we told them about all the things that make them special. We made some awesome presents for them which they enjoyed while sharing our morning snack with us. We dressed up like policemen when Constable Barrett, our Adopt-A–Cop, came to visit. We practised crossing the road remembering to look right, left and right again. In place of our sunflowers we planted a super vegetable garden. The beans that we planted grew so tall we thought Jack in the Beanstalk had come to stay. We became very creative using the self-selection activity table. We zoomed off into space in Term Four, learning about planets, stars and so much more. The sound of the Didgeridoo could be heard as we listened to stories from The Dreamtime. The vet came to visit, teaching us how to handle and care for animals. Mrs Hogan brought some tiny Bantam chickens from her farm for us to care for and enjoy. At last, Christmas time arrived with all the excitement of decorations, presents and yummy things to eat. Operation Christmas Child reminded us that the true spirit of Christmas is to give more than we receive. We felt so proud at our graduation when we were welcomed into the College. Our time in Kindergarten has come to an end but when we want to remember our special time there, we’ll look through our portfolios and marvel at how much we’ve grown. We would like to thank all those who have made the first year of The Tiny Tartan Kindergarten such a successful and fulfilling year. 18 : the springfield anglican college 2012 kindergarten : success the springfield anglican college 2012 : 19 success : prep Class: Prep E Class: Prep J Back: Mrs Wendy Hall (Teachers Aide), Madison Watt, Taine Scanlan, Oliver Walsh, Lachlan Cuskelly, Marshall Price, Piper Seaward, Annabelle Prinsloo, Mrs Grier Elliot (Teacher) Back: Mrs Julianne Boyes (Teacher), Emma Kazuberns, Oliver Carter, Tiare Rayner, Jakob Kereszturi, Rowan Lewis, Conner Bennet, Bailey Farrell-Thomas, Luca Webber, Mrs Kym Fraser (Teacher’s Aide) Middle: Julius Punter, Mya Phillips, Jack Porthouse, Eythyn Brown, Jayden Hartwick, Liam Tierney, Madison Brink, Mitchell Riley, Max Pramschufer, Makenna Stibbard Middle: Georgia Norris, Torah Pene, Ryan Gilman, Chloe Skillecorn, Jack Hawkins, Isaiah Clarke, Rayaan Mulla, Ruby Brereton, Brooke Winterflood Front: Erika Nguyen, Daniel Dale, Paige Klein, Seth Barrett, Sarah Bond, Riley Slee, Benjamin Elford, Brooke Moller Front: Lachlan Black, Milla Wilkins, Zac Stuart, Blake Bailey, Aden Morin, Pippa Ellis, Ethan Crouch 20 : the springfield anglican college 2012 prep : success Prep 2012 We are the Preps of TSAC, Prep J and Prep E and also Prep T, It’s been an especially busy year, Full of learning, laughter, fun, and good cheer, We’ve giggled at goats, handled a hen, cornered a piglet in the animal pen. Planting bean seeds in Science was one of our first tasks in Term Two and the study of living things continued with our daily recording and measurement of their growth. With much anticipation our chicken eggs and hatcheries arrived and after a short time of constant observation, our chicks hatched and filled our rooms with cheerful cheeping sounds. Meanwhile we were all busily researching our family histories, interviewing relatives and discovering amazing stories about our very own family heroes. We read books to review and wrote and illustrated our own narratives to share. Book Week Parade was a time to celebrate our favourite books and characters. Near the end of the term we joined with the Football Academy in practising our football and team skills. Day one of Term Four kick-started with a splash into swimming lessons. Looking into the past and discussing school life as it was for our parents, grandparents and teachers, made us appreciate how good life at school is now. Our visit to Wolston House was a special day out and took us back in time. We noticed the differences in the style of furniture, the materials used and the design and use of the rooms. We look forward to the challenge of Year Three. Thank you to all the volunteer helpers, parents and our wonderful teachers who made Year Two a time to remember. the springfield anglican college 2012 : 27 success : year two 28 : the springfield anglican college 2012 year three : success Class: 3B Class: 3C Back:Mrs Laura Bain (Teacher), Bethany Cavanagh, Ebony Gorry, Laura Watkins, Laura Hill, Briar Mitchell, Judy Magirin Back:Mrs Lisa Christofis (Teacher), Angel Mitchell, Alexander McIvor, Hayden Brook, Ethan Mak, Lilian Smart, Connor Bromage, Karissa Tregenza Middle:Mia Barbi, Layla Williams, Aydin Anderson, Catherine Tupicoff, Lachlan Blackmore, Max Wilcox, Ryan Wood, Abby Stuart, Nicholas Newbury Middle:Angel Keane, Matthew Holmes, Haley Miners, David Kouklinos, Sebastien Barrere, Lauren Mack, Olivia Paper, Jett Elliot, Callum Lotz Front:Montana Rainsford, Tommy Rough, Leah Mallory, Chloe Norris, Jack Hogrefe, Shilah Morris, Anthony Grentell, Olivia Moller Front:Alyssa Trigg, Jorja Moran, Emmalika Noun, Michaela Robertson, Dakota Farrell-Thomas, Sarah Hogg, Chloe Kratzmann, Abbie McCormack Absent:Mitchell Burrows, Mrs Judy Jackson (Teachers Aide) Absent:Harrison Beech, Mrs Judy Jackson (Teachers Aide) the springfield anglican college 2012 : 29 success : year three Year Three We hit the ground running in Term One With many things to be done. The art of persuasion was our guide To convince our readers to take our side. We looked at important moments in Australian History And decided what classification some living things might be. We flew with James on the Giant Peach And heard some of the stories that Jesus did teach. Newspapers were delivered in Term Three We followed the London Games with glee. Our sculptures of athletes looked bold After we painted them silver, bronze and gold. We fell in love with the BFG Snozzcumbers sounded awful - we all agree! The term ended with our own Olympic Day Badminton, table tennis and other games we did play. NAPLAN tested us in Term Two It was challenging, but we made it through. A visit to the Civic Centre was a highlight Followed by lunch at Queens Park and a flying – fox flight. While reading Matilda, we trembled at the Trunchbull And enjoyed the Bush Dance – it was wonderful! In the Science Lab we lit some flames And started learning about the Olympic Games. Things heated up in Term Four But we cooled off with a swim, which we did adore. Changes in Transport were investigated And in iPad lessons, we all participated. Spinning in space was our Science theme Recording the moon phases that we had seen. We interviewed our elders for a glimpse into the past Year Three in 2012 has been a real blast! 30 : the springfield anglican college 2012 year four : success Class: 4M Class: 4T Back:Mrs Kathy McKinnon ( Teacher), Chloe May, Lachlan Seaward, Deeksha Pandey, Grace Burow, Millie McCormack, Elise Langler, Charlotte Barrett, Ella Wilkinson, Lauren Bray Back:Miss Fleur Toussaint (Teacher), Chelsea Livingston, Phoebe Jackson, Sharkirra TurnerBartlem, Charlotte Leask, Izabella Uthmann, Marcus Gordon, Cooper Angelov, Ethan Newble Middle:Imogen Lewis, Ashlyn Speirs, Dylan Eassie, Jaiden Crowther, Alexander Jackson, Luke Pickstone, Jacob Sim, Oliver Kefford, Sarah Petersen, Alison Nunez Middle:Bronwyn Speirs, Sacha Louw, Regan Hinze, Matthew Tosh, Jacques Goodman, Brianna Aplin, Aidan Eassie, Monique Nguyen, Jarrad Wrigley Front:Sam Lonsdale, Matthew D’Archambaud, Ruby May, Zachary Watkins, Bailey Sagaidak, Tayla Behr, Harrison Sengstock, Jaden Dieckmann Front:Taylor Khammanivong, Max Bray, Jai Rose, Chelsea Routledge, Shayla-Rei Marshall, Kyle Davidson, Umar Ali, Lily Jackson Absent:Zoe Lennon, Thomas Holm the springfield anglican college 2012 : 31 success : year four Year Four Term One With friends old and new our journey in Year Four, starts with trepidation and excitement, as we wonder what’s in store. A trip to Ngtana-lui brought us Indigenous insights, with boomerang throwing, traditional stories and tribal rites. Term Two Term Two our famous explorers led us on voyages of great discovery, And after our electrifying Black and White Disco we made a speedy recovery. With a regular helping of number facts, spelling and comprehension, operations, grammar and writing seems almost too much to mention. Term Three Our focus was then on reading, with novel studies, reviews and Book Week, And dressing up as our favourite characters really was the peak. Igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic we had to define, You could say that we had rocks weighing heavily on our mind. Term Four We honed our persuasive skills through essays and advertising, And using the iPads to film made it convincing and exciting. As our year draws to a close, we’ve learnt lots and had some fun, We’ve outgrown our Year Four skin, so Year Five here we come! 32 : the springfield anglican college 2012 year five : success Class: 5J Class: 5P Back:Nathan Smart, Nicholas Dyer, Holly Kelly, Bannon Rogers, Jack Taylor, Joshua Kelly, Moses Clarke Back:Ryan Swords, Jaxson Samuels, Eryn Hughes, Jemma Bennet, Lachlan Mack, Delaram Sani Kermani, Kalani Thomas, Adrienne Versteegh, Jasmine Gourlay Middle:Ms Teresa Jenkins (Teacher), Grace Caley, Emma Williams, Ethan Lock, Cooper Murray, Ruby Britt, Emily Payne, Jasmine Jackson, Naomi Gourley Middle:Mrs Sheryl Prins (Teacher), Nawaz Sadeqi, Michael McLaomainn, Georga Boegheim, Jordenn Battelley, Byron Temple, Emma Wilkie, Mahalia Jeffrey-Davies, Riordon Brownlow Front:Monica Teramoto, Eli Myers, Madison Farrell-Thomas, Daniel Nguyen, Cody Chambers, Kylie Su, Axiemeon Manaois, Ella Davie Front:Shane Bradley, Jessica Southerwood, Kyran Lotz, Samuel Moller, Jake Slee, Shahira Jaikaran, Nikita Hogrefe, Zoe Schimke the springfield anglican college 2012 : 33 success : year five Year Five 2012 was a year filled with many good times. Students started the year looking at the properties of solids, liquids and gases which involved lots of experiments and careful observations. In History we looked at why colonies were established in Australia, and took an excursion to Beenleigh and got ourselves quite dirty as we discovered their capabilities and how to work with others. Term Two NAPLAN was tackled and both students and teachers were pleased when it was over. After learning about the Gold Rush we mined for gold in the sandpit and found many nuggets. Term Three was a highlight as it had the two most memorable events – Camp Out and Marionettes. The Camp Out was full of lots of fun activities and everyone was well worn out by bed time. The Marionettes took all term to make and sew clothes for, but the results were well worth the effort. It wouldn’t have been possible without our lovely parent helpers. Term Four came around so quickly, and we studied the novel ‘The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe’ and compared it to the movie. In Science we looked at how animals have adapted to live in certain habitats and in History we studied reasons for immigration to Australia. 2012 was a successful year, that we can all be proud of. 34 : the springfield anglican college 2012 year six : success Class: 6B Class: 6F Back:Matthew Sparrow, Zahlee Pearson, Lachlan Paton, Bruno Aleixo, Zoe Daramola, Marisha Giles, Madalene McGarrigle-Holmes, Madilyn Bray, Jackson Hayden Back:Heidi Jarrard, Marcus Turner-Bartlem, Paris Koutsis, Jael Challen, Soroush Khammar, Charlotte Bannah, Jacob Kelly, Daniel Lelic, Zoe Christofis Middle:Mr Martin Brownlow (Teacher), Leila Rough, Scott Jackson, Gabrielle Gordon, Phebe Seaward, Liam Moran, Emma Newbury, George Kefford, Lachlan Walker, Tessa Bray, Mrs Allana Dorman (Teacher) Middle:Mrs Megan Ellis (Teacher), Nicholas Su, Aidan Lister, Morgan Newble, Caitlin Poli, Kalib Monaei, Nicholas Waite, Paige Townsend-Paley, Alicia Webber, Mia Shepherd Front:Jazmine May, Jenna Behr, Valentina Vilayrack, Byron Scanlan, Sai Rajagopalan, Aimee Gilbert, Jorgia Paper, Emma Cosgrove Front:Riley McLennan, Savannah Lyle, Traeden Sialeipata, Madison Aitken, Elijah Pene, Madison Price, Connor Jones, Bianca Smith, Jemma Holliday the springfield anglican college 2012 : 35 success : year six Year Six 2012 meant the final year on the Primary Campus for us and we knew that there would be many new and exciting challenges ahead. Before we knew it we were preparing for our two night camp to Currimundi. Our camp allowed us to demonstrate our leadership skills and also take us out of our comfort zones to meet new challenges. The most noted challenges were the giant swing, alpine rescue and the ‘shoeswapping possum’. We were finding out very quickly that the implementation of the new National Curriculum would not only extend our teachers, but us as well! Term Two was upon us quickly and we were beginning to understand the importance of balancing our time more effectively with the extra sporting and cultural commitments, family time and homework, not to mention a bit of social time. We were happy to welcome Mrs Ellis to the Year Six team as Mrs Frewin went on maternity leave. We extended our knowledge of Australian History, became Earthquake Explorers and studied persuasive techniques in newspapers. With the mid-year break over, we were excited to hear an excursion to the EKKA was part of Term Three. As part of our Essential Energy unit we presented the EKKA with ideas on how they could be sustainable and use renewable energy. This project encompassed several curriculum areas; Science, Literacy, Numeracy, ICT, and Design and Technology. We also completed a literary comparison on two Morris Gleitzman novels. Term Four arrived so quickly, our last term on the Primary Campus. We became Change Detectives in Science; investigating the types of changes we see in everyday life…no stone was left unturned! As the term drew closer to the end we were able to sample what our new life on the Senior Campus will be like in our Year Seven Orientation visit. We were able to meet some of the teachers and experience lessons in the new Design and Technology Centre and Science Lab. A look around our new campus was exciting as we begin to realise that we really are growing up. Our completion assembly enabled us to reflect upon our time at the Primary Campus and we felt extremely proud as we shook our teacher’s hands and said our farewells to the other students. A big thankyou to our parents and teachers for their wonderful guidance and support over the years, you have moulded us to what we are today. 36 : the springfield anglican college 2012 year six last day : success Year Six Last Day It was a day that we thought would never come, our last day on the Primary Campus. Now it is here we are filled with sadness, trepidation and excitement. It was an early start on November 30 to get to the BBQ Breakfast, put on by the families of Year Six. The Graduation Assembly closely followed and watching the Preps present their Nativity Play was lovely to see. Before we knew it we were called up to receive our Graduation Certificates from Mrs Brewer. We felt proud standing in front of the parents, teachers and students of the Primary Campus for the final time, heads held high, shoulders back and standing tall. We are the Year Six cohort for 2012. Reflecting back over the past years we have had bumps, scrapes, tears and cheers and every moment worth it as it shaped us to who we are today. We could not have done it without the love and nurturing guidance from our parents and teachers and we would like to say thank you for the time and effort you have put into each of us. We may not say thank you every day but hopefully you can look at us and know that we are truly grateful for what you have provided for us. We know we are saying goodbye to the best years of our lives but we also know we have even better years in front of us. As we move on to the next stage of our lives, we will do so with a huge smile on our faces. the springfield anglican college 2012 : 37 success : abcc ABCC This year ABCC has been an exceptionally busy, challenging year, full of changes and innovative activities. One of the most exciting additions to ABCC has been the opening of The Tiny Tartan Kindergarten ABCC. Although run separately in the Kindergarten classrooms, it has been a valuable service to many families, as well as fun and exploring times for children who attended it. In January, Mrs Dali Jovanovic returned from her maternity leave as ABCC Director and was pleased to rejoin the team. Children have been involved in a variety of fun, exciting and educational programmes, which has included a sustainability project of growing our own flower garden and starting a compost bin. Children have become more involved in domesticated duties such as preparing their own breakfast and washing up dishes with close supervision by educators. Regular discussions are held with children on their interests and activities they would like to experience at ABCC. Students have also been given the opportunity to feel ownership of their service while they wear the “ABCC Helper” badge at times they wish to help, complete tasks or help with chores. Vacation care periods have always been exciting and fun. Older children had excursions to Gecko’s Family Fun Centre Browns 38 : the springfield anglican college 2012 Plains, QLD Museum at Southbank to see Exhibit on ‘Mummy Secrets of the Tomb’, Carnival Day at St John’s Anglican College Forest Lake and Paradise Country Gold and Opal fossicking. Other activities and incursions were Candle making, Old Macdonald’s Travelling Farms, Teddy Bears Picnic, Go Kart Wild, Little Green Thumbs, and Ocean Life Education. middle and senior campus overview : success The Middle and Senior Campus Overview The Middle and Senior School Campus has once again been a hive of activity. 2012 has also been a year of positive change in terms of the learning opportunities available, of new programmes and high levels of participation and achievement. The new Design and Technology Centre, with a range of different technologies has facilitated learning in new and exciting ways. The addition of iPads and iMacs to the fleet of desktops and laptops also positively impacted on the manner in which teaching and learning were undertaken. The introduction of the Rite Journey in Year Nine added a new dimension to the pastoral care programme with an emphasis placed on the development of emotional intelligence and resilience. Across the spectrum of the Creative Arts and Sport, students have been extremely active again in 2012. It has been lovely to witness the growth and development of these areas with new heights reached. As is the case each year, students enthusiastically embraced the desire to reach out to others in less fortunate positions. Through a variety of enjoyable fundraising activities, the College community can be very proud that once again a positive difference has been made. Throughout the year students also had the opportunity to engage in a range of clubs and tours such as the Chess, Design and Technology, Science, Air Cadets, Running and Mountain Biking Clubs, the Year Seven Canberra trip, the annual Ski trip and Music Tour to Sydney. As illustrated in the 2012 Yearbook, TSAC is a very active College. It is a great pleasure to see students taking advantage of these opportunities and equally pleasing to see the sense of enjoyment and achievement that results. Tracie Comber creative arts, health and physical education : success Instrumental Music Classroom Music Instrumental Music on the Senior Campus has seen tremendous growth in terms of standard and participation, with students having flourished under the expert guidance of our Instrumental Music teachers. Music has continued to grow in popularity in 2012, with the number of students studying Music elective in Years Nine to Twelve higher than ever. The addition of the Apple Mac computers have allowed students to compose, record and critique music at a much higher level through programmes such as Garage Band and Logic. Students have embraced the capabilities of the iMacs and have become very creative in what they have produced. This year the College has been able to offer a wide range of extra curricular Instrumental Music activities, including: Animato Senior String Ensemble, Intermediate Concert Band, Senior Concert Band, Percussion Ensemble and Rock Bands. A new addition this year was the formation of the Jazz Ensemble. Many of the students in these groups had the opportunity throughout the year to work with professional musicians from the Conservatorium of Music and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra. Students have had many performance opportunities both within the College community and at external functions, competitions and displays. More than forty woodwind, brass, percussion and strings students completed their AMEB and Trinity Music examinations with great success. The Senior Concert Band received a Silver award at the Queensland Youth Music Awards and the Brisbane Bands Festival. The Animato Senior Strings Ensemble performed very well at MusicFest and received a Gold award. The major event for 2012 Instrumental Music was the Music Tour to Sydney. Band, Strings and Choir students and six very enthusiastic teachers flew to Sydney for an action-packed five day adventure. Thank you to the following teachers who assisted and enabled the students to have such an exciting, educational and rewarding trip: Ms Carla McGlynn, Ms Fleur Toussaint, Ms Josephine Pollicina, Mr Evan Clements and Reverend Chris Boyce. Thanks to the Instrumental Music teachers at the Senior Campus for their dedication to Instrumental Music at TSAC; Mrs Sarah Harwood, Ms Chloe Williamson, Ms Nozomi Omote, Mr Shannon Marshal, Ms Sherina Parker and new Head of Creative Arts, Dr Philippa Robinson. This professional team continually encourage our students to strive for and achieve excellence. Congratulations to the students who spend many hours practising in order to maintain these high standards. Special thanks to the parents for their support in getting students to early rehearsals, competitions and other events. Topics such as World Music (Year Seven), Music in the Theatre and Rock Music (Year Nine and Ten), Experimental Music and Revolutions in Music (Year Eleven and Twelve) have given students a deeper understanding of a variety of musical styles and genres. Whilst studying these topics, students have also learned to play on keyboards and guitars and write their own compositions. Music Extension has involved two students this year, both specialising in Performance. Through regular practice and recitals, Tracie Comber has refined her skills as a percussionist on a range of percussion instruments. She has also enjoyed arranging for and performing with the College Percussion Ensemble. Kim Maunder specialised in Piano, although she has also performed on Flute in her earlier recital. Kim explored and further developed her love of atmospheric pieces, particularly those used as soundtracks or written by the composer Ludovico Einaudi. Mrs Wendy Jurss and Ms Carla McGlynn have thoroughly enjoyed the enthusiasm shown by students within Music and look forward to seeing students develop in their musical maturity in 2013. the springfield anglican college 2012 : 41 success : creative arts, health and physical education Classroom Drama Drama on the Senior Campus this year saw students study a range of dramatic art forms from Theatre for Young People to Non-Western Theatre. Students were treated to workshops from Homunculus Theatre Company and La Boite Theatre Company in which they explored different theatre styles in both practical and theoretical forms. Year Eleven had the fantastic opportunity to view a live performance of ‘Summer of the Seventeenth Doll’ by the Queensland Theatre Company at QPAC as part of their ‘Realism’ assessment. The enthusiasm and high quality of work shown by the students in Drama during 2012 has been outstanding. Classroom Dance This year in Dance on the Senior Campus, students have explored a myriad of Dance styles and completed choreography, performance and appreciation tasks throughout their studies. Students demonstrated a high level of creativity and an emerging passion for Dance as an art form. They explored Musical Theatre, Hip Hop, Popular Dance and Contemporary. Students also had the opportunity to attend the musical ‘A Chorus Line’ in which they were exposed to the exciting world of live theatre. The College is looking forward to seeing the Dance Department grow and expand as a new wave of talented dancers join the Senior Campus in 2013. 42 : the springfield anglican college 2012 creative arts, health and physical education : success Visual Arts Health and Physical Education The Visual Art Department have had a very productive year. Some of the highlights of the busy programme that our students completed as part of their curriculum electives have included: the Year Eight students who designed and created clay dragons which were successfully fired in the new kiln. Year Nine students created mad and outrageous hats in order to gain entry to the Annual Mad Hatters’ Pizza Party as a celebration of their unit on Wearable Art. The Year Ten students created self-portraits as tonal pencil drawings and then went on to transform these two dimensional works into three dimensional life size clay busts. Senior students worked on their individual portfolios simulating the working process of a real arts practice. There was a variety of works created; some were large scaled conceptual pieces exploring abstract expressionism while others used the more traditional process of drypoint etching to create a print series. A cumulative exhibition was held showcasing the work from all year levels at the Year Four to Twelve Night of Celebration. Students in Years Seven to Ten started the year with swimming lessons at Waterworx Aquatic Centre, and Cricket, Softball and Badminton. While students in Years Eleven and Twelve utilised the fitness centre and developed their badminton skills. All students were able to prepare for the Inter-Clan Cross Country Carnival which produced some outstanding results. During Term Two, students focussed on Athletics, Hockey, Netball and Volleyball. Volleyball continues to be a popular activity all years. Term Three was a busy term with students focussing on Soccer and Basketball, and also preparing for the Inter-Clan Athletics Carnival. During Term Four students were able to put their tennis skills to the test. Lessons were also assisted by professional tennis coaches from G M Tennis. The senior students were able to finish an eventful year with Sofcrosse, Zumba and Boot Camp provided by fitness instructors from Maximum Effort Fitness. Throughout the year, students have also studied the theoretical aspects of Health and Physical Education during the RAVE Programme. Students in Year Eleven also completed the Sports Leaders Award, and completed a six week coaching module by practicing their coaching skills with the Year Seven Students during Term Two. Building on from the Sports Leaders Award completed last year, the Year Twelve students completed a game orientation coaching module on a range of sports. The Year Eight, Nine and Ten students who chose to study Elective Physical Education were able to develop their skills in a range of practical activities. Activities such as Volleyball, AFL, Touch Football, European Handball, Ultimate Disk and Badminton were an instant hit with the students. Students in Years Eleven and Twelve focussed on Kayaking, Badminton, Volleyball and Touch Football in more depth. They also studied the theoretical aspects of Physical Education. 2012 has been an excellent year in terms of achievement. 100% of Year Twelve students achieved a sound achievement or above. Overall, it has been an enjoyable and productive year in the Health and Physical Education Department. the springfield anglican college 2012 : 43 success : languages English Year Eight, Nine and Ten have focused on Language, Literature and Literacy elements of the National Curriculum and produced authentic texts in response to tasks that promoted inquiry. Year Eight students delved into how teenagers are represented and the representations of Indigenous Australia and those involved in conflicts. Students wrote poems, letters and gave lectures and debated ideas around complex issues. The Year Nine students performed well in NAPLAN. They examined the media and the language used in newspapers and explored the theme of prejudice. Tomorrow When the War Began is always a favourite and this year students examined ideas around identity. Year Ten examined film language and the way it can be used to construct national identities and students created a film pitch, and examined the psychology of characters in To Kill a Mocking Bird and examined classic literature. Finally, students examined the reasons for video game censorship and the way that gamers are represented in the media. Senior English covered topics that are both personal and have global significance. The most significant driver of our learning has been to develop and analyse our own voice and understand that others have voices that might challenge or reinforce our own values and attitudes. Year Twelve enthusiastically examined the personal journey of those who have experienced loss as a result of conflict and have developed an understanding of other cultures through the eyes of the author. They put on trial characters in dystopian world and witnessed the power of the antagonist in Macbeth. Overall, students in English have challenged themselves and have hopefully been empowered by developing their critical, written and spoken communication skills. Chinese In 2012, students of Chinese on the Senior Campus had the opportunity to participate in conversations with visitors from China. Year Eight students studied Chinese two lessons a week for one semester. They learn to communicate in Chinese through listening, speaking, reading and writing. During the recent Music Tour at the end of Term Three, a number of the students held a short conversation with Chinese tourists on Sydney Tower. Apparently, the Chinese tourists were very impressed. It is pleasingly to know the students put their lessons into a real life context. During the year, Year Ten students were given a special task hosting Chinese student visitors for the day. They introduced the visitors to all three Year Ten classes and found out information from the visitors in Chinese. In addition, both Year Nine and Year Ten students of Chinese have been shown how to type and write the Chinese characters on iPads and iPhones. As these devices are more for personal use than normal computers or laptops, students have been encouraged to explore the language options available through modern technology. 44 : the springfield anglican college 2012 mathematics / rave : success Mathematics RAVE The Mathematics Department has had an extremely successful year both in terms of student learning, engagement as well as academic achievement. This year has seen the implementation and reporting on the National Curriculum with overarching success. Students have embraced the academic challenges and in turn have become apt at applying knowledge laterally, specifically in terms of their problem solving and extension activities. The continued teacher and student use of ‘real world’ technologies has enabled students to explore and build upon problem solving concepts and theories that were previously restricted in their scope and depth. Such technologies include iPads, Smart Boards, Graphics Calculators, and Data Logging equipment. In addition to this, the introduction of the ‘Maths Technology‘ room further increased students capabilities in problem solving strategies and scenarios solely utilising such technologies. The RAVE programme, or ‘Religious and Values Education’ has been developing over the last few years to reflect some of the changes in the structure of the College. In the minds of the students this means a variety of interesting, challenging and thought provoking content. The College has performed extremely well with both internal and external assessment items such as NAPLAN and various University based competitions. Students are continuing to take advantage of the many opportunities to extend their learning at the College. This has seen large increases in numbers of students in the areas of Mathematics B, Senior Sciences and Tutoring. The topics covered range widely from a Bible study of the ‘Sermon on the Mount’ to discussions of ethics, real-world scenarios, and hypotheticals, to looking at the way in which movies, such as the Matrix represent Biblical content, or the way in which characters can portray behaviour that we would emulate or change our attitudes. The main aim of the curriculum is to prepare students for the life choices they will have to make, and to give them the skills to make these choices. There is also a very strong emphasis on learning about the basics of Christianity and answering the big questions about God such as “Why do bad things happen to good people?”, “Has science disproved God?” or “Who goes to heaven?” Highlights from the year included analysing how we spend our time after watching the movie ‘In Time’, lessons from Reverend Chris Boyce about who God is, the future plans for Year Twelve students and their attitudes towards social issues. Students were given a range of opportunities to discuss their attitudes, values and beliefs outside of class. Many students had informal conversations about their beliefs about God and how that impacted on their decisions and attitude towards life. A selected number of Year Ten and Eleven students were given the opportunity to go to the Anglican School Students Network Conference 2012, organised by Mr Thomas McPherson and a committee made up of Chaplains, the Anglican Schools Commission, and the Ministry Education Commission. Students were engaged in deeper questions about their lives and the possible impact that they could have on those around them and around the world. The other main opportunity provided for the students outside of the classroom was a regular Wednesday lunchtime Bible Study group (called lunchtimes with Macca). Students looked at different Bible passages in depth such as Parables, Jesus teachings, life and death, and basic Christian principles about sin and faith. RAVE at the College is highly valued by the students for a range of reasons, and whilst not everyone takes a leap of faith at school, many students recognise how important it is to work out their beliefs and treat others with respect. Mr Thomas McPherson the springfield anglican college 2012 : 45 success : science Science The Science Laboratories are always very busy places with students from Years Seven to Twelve accessing the Labs for hands-on practical Science activities. The majority of students choose to study at least one Science subject in their Senior Years. The Laboratory in the new Design and Technology Centre is a welcome addition to the Department. Many of the units of study have an emphasis on enquiry based learning where students design experiments, assess the risks, carry out investigations, collect and analyse their data, form conclusions and compile detailed reports. This approach has aligned well with the introduction of the National Curriculum this year. The Science Department has continued its affiliations with tertiary institutions. Year Seven teachers have been involved in a pilot project with the University of Queensland and Independent Schools Queensland which aims to improve the links between practical work and theoretical concepts. The Biology Camp at North Stradbroke Island was again a highlight for those studying Biology. The Physics students studied the Physics of Dreamworld, and while on their Canberra trip, the Year Seven students visited Questacon to conduct hands-on experiments. This year, all students in Years Seven to Ten sat for the University of New South Wales Science Competition which provided them with the opportunity to improve their problem solving in a formal examination setting. 46 : the springfield anglican college 2012 Biology Biology continued to be a popular choice for students in Year Eleven and Twelve. The topics studied in Year Eleven include: Being Alive and Staying Alive; Relating Structure to Function in Human Organisms; In Sickness and in Health; Reproduction; and Ecology. The Year Twelve course is a little more academic and topics consist of: Cells and Energy; the Blueprint of Life (DNA and Genetics); Maintaining a Balance (Homeostasis) and Biology, Technology and Society. In both years there is a focus on practical work in the form of Extended Experimental Investigations where the students are required to formulate a question, conduct research for their background information, design the experiment, carry it out and communicate their findings in a detailed laboratory report. Typical topics include enzymes, osmosis, reaction times in different conditions, recovery times after 100m sprints, memory games and the perception of ink blots and optical illusions. The Year Seven cohort assists every year by willingly submitting themselves for the various tests. The Biology Camp to Stradbroke Island remained a highlight of the course. The CSIRO lab-on-legs also visits and provides equipment for biotechnology experiments. science : success Chemistry Physics The Senior Chemistry programme at the College has provided students with an opportunity to expand their knowledge of the natural world as they delved into concepts such as Electrochemistry, Pharmaceuticals and Alcohol Chemistry. Student learning, engagement, and academic success have all been achieved this year by the Physics Department. Participation numbers continue to build upon previous years due to the interest gained and diverse learning opportunities provided in the Middle School years. Students have embraced the physics of the real world, focusing specifically on Motion, Electricity and Magnetism and Bridge Engineering. The continued teacher and student use of ‘real world’ technologies, as well as participation in excursions to Dreamworld, Winter National Drag Racing and access to new electronic resources has enabled students to explore and build upon their knowledge of the physics that surrounds them daily. Technologies including iPad’s, Smart Boards, Graphics Calculators, and Data Logging equipment have enabled practical lessons to be much more about analysis of data, rather than simply confirmation of a theory. In Year Eleven, students explored the technicalities of atoms and molecules, explored different types of fuels and sources, made and tested lighter-than-air balloons and performed various tests on water quality to determine the health of the Brisbane River. Year Twelve students added a touch of class to the College this year in their winemaking unit. As part of their Extended Experimental Investigations, students spent a term fermenting grape juice in demijohns to investigate different factors affecting the fermentation process. Students also demonstrated their environmentally friendly side by constructing hydrogen powered cars and wind turbines driven by solar power. the springfield anglican college 2012 : 47 success : social science Studies of Society and Environment Students involved in the Studies of Society and Environment have this year explored from Ancient Rome to the battlefields of World War 1, as well as studying the landscape of Australia and her surrounding countries and the impact people have made on these landscapes and environments. Year Eight studied mapping and how mapping affects their lives in a practical and meaningful manner. Their exploits with the geographical also extended into understanding the landscape and environment that makes Australia unique. During their studies of the past – both Medieval and Ancient – students saw their understanding of historical issues develop as they investigated how people lived in between 500 BC and 1400 AD, and how the ideas that exsisted in these times, have moulded our society today. Year Nine, similarly, dealt with issues from our past and looked at the impact of Federation within Australia as well as the impact of immigration on the rights of its citizens. Compounding this, the students also looked at sustainability and the environment as well as threats to the rainforest. In their final assessment they were challenged to make a measurable difference to their community by raising funds for and awareness of various environmental issues. Senior students were given the opportunity to specialise in areas of interest and studied either Geography or Ancient History in Semester One. In Semester Two, all students studied Modern History and were asked to tackle challenging topics such as what causes social revolution and the futility of war. Throughout the year students showed their commitment to challenging both themselves and the ideas and practices in the world today. They have developed cross curricular skills that will stand them in good stead for many areas of study and experienced a range of assessment techniques that has prepared them for the changes ahead with the introduction of a National Curriculum History in 2013. Business Throughout the year there has been many opportunities given to the Business classes of the College. The Year Nine Business class has been investigating Share Trading and each student has participated in the ASX Schools Sharemarket Games. The Market Day was an opportunity for the Year Ten classes to put their entrepreneurial, marketing and operational skills into action. Human Resource Management was a topic that was also highlighted during this venture. Twenty Year Ten Business students were invited to participate in a three day programme called ECOMAN. The students worked in groups that represented manufacturing companies and made decisions about how to allocate various business resources and the impact of these decisions were identified. The business programme, ‘A Journey to Business Excellence’, has been introduced into the Year Eleven Business Organisation and Management course. The hands-on simulations have led to a high level of student engagement and active involvement in developing and implementing strategies to improve the success and productivity of a 48 : the springfield anglican college 2012 business. It has been an excellent tool for creating opportunities for higher order thinking. The College is one of five Queensland schools using this program. Field experiences have regularly been offered throughout the Business courses. Trips to Orion Shopping Centre have been conducted to study various business types, marketing and business environmental sustainability. The Year Eleven class toured Coca Cola investigating their Operations and Marketing, and the Year Twelve students attended a Business Breakfast early in the year to dine with business owners and to hear about the success of various business people from the local area. technology / resource centre : success Design Technology and Graphics Resource Centre This year has seen a massive change in student involvement and success in technology. With the new Design and Technology Centre offering an amazing range of resources, the curriculum has continued to offer projects that allow students to take ownership of countless design decisions as well as offering a range of extra curricular opportunities. Every day from 8:00am till 4:00pm the Senior Campus Resource Centre has been buzzing with students from Years Seven to Twelve, using the Library and the Computer Lab for internet research, printing assignments, playing chess and board games, borrowing books, reading, or just sitting with friends and relaxing. It was also used for the provision of extra help and tutorials from various teachers. Students have made clocks, pewter castings, boxes, and electronic dice, and that’s just in Years Seven and Eight. The Year Nine Design Technology group have created child toys that support the educational needs of our new Kindergarten and Year Ten have gone onto create a lamp project allowing them to combine electronics and other materials to complete fantastic conceptual designs. The Senior Years Graphics students have created graphical representations of mobile phones, packaging projects and a range of architectural solutions. Our Year Twelve Technology students have added to the community by building a range of solutions to help the school become a better place for students to work, including storage solutions for the workshop, Kindergarten and an outdoor bench for students to eat lunch. The Technology Club was started this year to build on the success of Robot Club. The club has continued to offer students the opportunity to programme and build robots for a National competition, as well as make electric guitars, and competing in a local Billy Karting competition, where students finished second by half a kart. This year we had sixteen students studying various subjects through Distance Education. During the day the Library was used for students on spare lessons providing them opportunities to borrow laptops for researching and completing assessment tasks. The Library was the hub for some very interesting, and eye-catching art displays, as well as the place for parent information sessions and various meetings throughout the year including visits from famous authors. Girls in Year Nine and Ten were given the opportunity to visit USQ and find out about the possibilities for females in engineering and were involved in a range of exciting tasks. The Department have been well supported by parents and staff to achieve great changes and would like to pass on our thanks, in particular to Mr Wohling and Mr Clarke who have made a range of opportunities possible to students. Much like technology into the future we will evolve too, creating even more opportunities for students. the springfield anglican college 2012 : 49 success : year seven Class: 7G Class: 7H Back:Tyler Woolfe, Brianna Speirs, Angelica Wright, Jarrod Hill, Bonnie Cosgrove, Hamish Boyd, Tiana Hogrefe, Curtis Potter Back:Lisa Nguyen, Larana Thomas, Karis Rosenkranz, Joshua Cox, Brendan Gu, Melissa Wilcox, Georgia Parkinson, Georgia Boyd Middle:Jade Barbeler, Hunter Jones, Ahmet Kilic, Faith Tainui, Shantay Morris, Jae Dale, Clare Pickstone, Mackenzie Wilkins, Madelaine Clark, Ms Joanne Gillespie (Teacher) Middle:Leonorah Hui-Asbury, Braydn Sagaidak, Jessica Campbell, Lawson Woolford, Thomas Patterson, Dylan Mason, Mackenzie Black, Vanessa Tran, Mrs Ann HainesShipman (Teacher) Front:Yehan Navaratne, Tia Newman, Remy Webber, Callum Burdett, Jeremy Zbasnik, Tayla Skipage, Jordan Kollmann, Simrat Singh, Chloe Bradley, Joshua D’Archambaud Absent:Brayden Battelley, Grace Duff Front:Samir Ali, Clarence Lin, Sarah MacDougal-Marshall, Erin Clark, Daniel Clark, Kirrily Afiouni, Alexandra McIlveen, Jack Langler, Calum Hogg Absent:Ethan Kortge, Bryanna Palmer 50 : the springfield anglican college 2012 year seven : success Year Seven What a year 2012 has been! With the new National Curriculum, Year Seven have been extremely busy and have had to acquire new organisational skills along with new knowledge and understanding. Term One was jam packed and saw the students tackling lots of new mathematical concepts and ideas. They began to learn about Ancient Australia and how to follow lines of inquiry in History lessons. Science brought new skills as students learnt about lab safety and experimented with Bunsen Burners. The journey for Term Two also involved new scientific experiences as the students took part in a fish and prawn dissection, looking at the structure of vertebrates and invertebrates. Students studied Australian Democracy as part of their unit for Social Science and in preparation for their Canberra excursion. Holding a class election was both an exciting and inspiring time. During Term Three, Year Seven visited The South Bank Queensland Museum for ‘The Mummy – Secrets of the Tomb’ exhibition. They watched in awe as a 3D movie explained how mummification happened and described the rituals of ancient Egyptian funerals. As students ventured into the museum itself, they were able to see real mummies from ancient Egypt. At the end of Term Three, the Canberra excursion finally arrived and, after waiting for so long, Year Seven were raring to go! It was such an exciting and informative experience enjoyed by all. From CSIRO to Black Mountain Tower, students and teachers enjoyed every minute. Term three also brought a joint Chapel Service by 7G and 7H. The Parable of the Sower was brought to life during a dramatic presentation and students thought about how it is important to not just listen to the words of Jesus, but to also hear them. Tips’, a wonderful and inspiring tale. Specialist lessons were drawing to a close and had really prepared the cohort for what Year Eight might be like… let the next chapter begin! The last term, short as it was, was also fun filled and bursting with new experiences for the Year Sevens. In Science they looked at the Earth in Space and the Earth’s resources, learning how to create a sustainable lifestyle. History was very interesting, exploring the world of Ancient India. Students completed a novel study in English, reading Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Adolphus the springfield anglican college 2012 : 51 success : year eight Class: 8A Class: 8B Back:Jordan Lonsdale, Jessica Chew, Cassidy Webber, Jordon Hayden, Samuel Eagles, Josiah Tafili, Sabrina Stinchcombe, Joel Sandford, Dallin Ing Back:Mary McFerran, Madelaine Lelic, Myles Gillan, Christopher Griffiths, Jarod Rasmussen, Tasmyn Zbasnik, Sophie Lyle, Brittany Maloy Middle:Cody Peters-Cash, Natasha Ford, Madeline Ripoll, Tess Hedges, Luke Shepherd, Claudia-Rose Nikolas, Harrison Jones, Abigail Vergunst, Lucy Bedford, Mr Hilton Whitehorne (Teacher) Middle:Jaike Salmon, Hailey Ledgard, Madaline Norton, Juanita Chambers, Casey Jenkins, Millicent Cosgrove, Andrew King, Casey Bullard, Aidan Duff, Mr Darren Sime (Teacher) Front:Jake Tisdell, Ziyal Wilton-Hawkins, Emma Lonsdale, Liam Cosgrove, Abbey Ratz, Emily Milton-Brown, Bailey O’Day, Teona McCorrie, Sarah Williams, William Nicholson 52 : the springfield anglican college 2012 Front:Alex Vu, Stephanie Smith, Michael Smith, Jake Twilley, Quintin Patterson, Olivia Ricketts, Jordan Davie, Justin Van Zanden, Trent Wilson, Nadia Wiegman Absent:Kailyn Walsh year eight : success Year Eight This year proved to be an exciting and challenging one for the Year Eight students. Faced with the prospect of new teachers, new friends, and for some a new school, the students made this year one to remember. The cohort of eighty-four quickly became known for their enthusiasm thanks to their gusto when participating in assemblies and Chapel services. Highlights of the school year included Camp, Year Level Assemblies, Charity Day and TAS sport. The Year Eight Camp saw the students challenge themselves both physically and mentally. They powered through the overnight hike, hunted for clues in an extremely spooky scavenger hunt, mastered the high ropes course, and cooked delicious burritos on the camp stoves. Each group worked well together and supported one another through each task. As strong as each class is individually, combined they are an unstoppable force. This was seen on our Charity Day during Term Three to raise money for the Dachueek Health Centre Project. After an enormous amount of organisation, the Year Eight Bake Sale raised over $600, more than half of the College’s target. The girls who represented the College at the TAS Swimming and Athletics Carnivals also showed their versatility by finishing Age Champions. The Year Eight students this year need to be commended on their willingness to get involved across all elements of College life. Their application to the betterment of themselves and the College indicates that the future of the College looks bright indeed. the springfield anglican college 2012 : 53 success : year eight 54 : the springfield anglican college 2012 year nine : success Class: 9A Class: 9B Back:Jacob DeSilva, Jaye L’Amie, Denika Hutchen, Michael Campbell, Dean Wiegman, Jack Meurant, Rhys Mason, Jacob Mullins, Jeremy Smith Back:Jessica Hawula, Brendan Fogg, Joshua May, Anzah Khan, Coen Lange, Nicholas Livingston, Shane Savill, Claudia Marasea, Joshua McCormack Middle:Mikaylah Parsons, Emily Dyer, Kate Roberts, Charles Chambers, Alexander Clark, Ben Wilcox, Brandon Temple, Terence Lin, Robert Goss, Dr Judy Morris (Teacher) Middle:Emily Evans, Emily Milner, Nathan McConville, Lefu Fonomaalii, Ben Gamer, Toby Janke, Clare Cannons, Megan Newell, Mrs Larissa Brown (Teacher) Front:Duy Xuan (Daniel) Nguyen, Marie Boulanger, Joe Hedges, Kimberley White, Brodie Gray, Lucy Williams, Chantelle Nguyen, Emily French, Karin Ryan, Jed Caley Front:Melodie Prins, Simone Silva, Emily Ripoll, Erin King, Hamish Warden, Jaycee-Leigh Robinson, Chloe Thomas, Daisy Leadbetter, Sharteice Wraight Absent:Grace Raicebe, Mrs Leanne Cartwright (Teacher) Absent:Seth Cermak, Karl Seaward the springfield anglican college 2012 : 55 success : year nine Year Nine The Year Nine students have had a busy and challenging year. Term One saw the introduction of a new programme called the ‘Rite Journey’, which is specially designed for Year Nine. The programme aims to raise the students’ consciousness about the transition from child to adulthood. An overnight camp at school and a dawn hike up Mt Cootha was an excellent introduction to this programme. The highlight of Term Two was the three day outdoor expedition to the Great Sandy National Park on the Sunshine Coast. Over the three days students undertook various funfilled activities including successfully abseiling down a terrifying forty metre cliff face, hiking, canoeing across Lake Cootharaba and mountain biking. Other highlights of the year included sitting for the NAPLAN test, participating in Inter-Clan and Inter-School sport, designing vessels and dissecting eyeballs. If this group of students is able to maintain their present level of involvement, commitment and enthusiasm, the Year Nine’s are sure to make a significant contribution to the life of the College as the Year Ten cohort of 2013. 56 : the springfield anglican college 2012 year ten : success Class: 10A Class: 10B Back:Morgan Mills, Liam Vickary, Tremaine Peters, Bailey Ferdous, Rebekah Hay Back:Eddie Thomann, Angelique Ford, Gordon Tu, Daniel Allan, Jayden Jordanovich Middle:Lachlan Jackson, Cassidy Giles, Jamey Hutton, Ruby Stewart, Sean Harrison, Isaac Flello, Alexa Maloy, Mr Phil Kefford (Teacher) Middle:Feristha Rezahi Ghaznawi, Devin Athurugiriya, Jordan Noske, Micah Weslake, Jonathan Langan, Lachlan Ratz, Ms Thea McLean (Teacher) Front:Jemima Shipman, Emily Baker, Amy Kummerehl, Maylee Wohling, Mikaela Revfeim, Madeleine Weeks, Annabelle Murrell, Paige Kelly Front:Madison Logan, Madalyn Carroll, Oliver Marshall, Dominique Uthmann, Amy Bentley, Ethan Wilkie, Vanessa Chan, Kyra Wilton-Hawkins Absent:Kristina Kelly Absent:Samuel Morgan the springfield anglican college 2012 : 57 success : year ten Year Ten Year Ten students at TSAC have enjoyed a splendid year with new opportunities and a few old favourites! One of the highlights for the year was the Camp held at the end of Semester One. Those students lucky enough to attend, travelled up to the North Sunshine Coast Hinterland, staying at Lake Cootharaba for 2 nights. The ‘extreme’ challenges thrown down to them included abseiling, canoeing and hiking. Further to this, camping and cooking in near negative temperatures saw the students dig deeper than they had previously had to, revealing an inner strength and new found resilience. Modern History and Geography were taught independently, and the ‘Triple S’ programme provided new opportunities to give back to the community and increase reflective capacity whilst at the same time add a tangible, practical skill set. A visit by the travelling theatre company Grin and Tonic helped to bring Romeo and Juliet to life and ensured that our year level were exposed to the humour and literary challenge of ‘the bard.’ Once more, we would like to thank all those people who have been involved in making our year at TSAC so enjoyable and we feel prepared and fully equipped to step into the ‘Senior’ school and continue building a history for TSAC. As usual the key event in Term One was the Year Eleven Camp, held at Koinonia by the Sea in NSW. The Camp included activities like The Amazing Race, camping out overnight and team building. The Amazing Race had clues to locations and activities like Surfing, Bowling and High Ropes. The students went to the Butcher and had to work out in their groups how to budget their money for the meat for their camp out. This was accompanied by their group leader, one of whom was dressed as a Pirate and added “arr” to everything. The team building involved the construction of a catapult, sliding massive planks of wood and filling a pipe with sea-water, even though it was peppered with holes. Overall, it helped the students strengthen their relationships with each other, challenged them to overcome obstacles, and formed them into a cohesive team. Absent:Zoe Logan, Makayla Hill, Kyle Mason A small group of Year Eleven students participated in other great events such as the Ski Trip and the ASSN Conference. The Ski Trip was held at Perisher and was filled with skiing, eating and sleeping. The accommodation was fantastic and no-one suffered any major injuries. The inaugural Anglican School Students Network (ASSN) Conference was an opportunity for Year Ten and Eleven students to learn more about God with students from other Anglican Colleges, and to make new friends. Sam Clear challenged the way in which they viewed the world, and helped them to see that they could make a difference and Bishop Geoff Smith, helped students explore the concept of hearing God in their lives. There were a lot of cooking activities for the Year Eleven’s. There was Pancake Day in Term One, BBQs to raise money for the Ski Trip in Term Two, and in Term Three the Year Eleven’s cooked breakfast for the Year Twelve’s on the days of the QCS test. The leadership skills showed in Term Three with some students facilitating the inaugural Year Eleven Semi-Formal. It was a very successful evening. The students have faced the challenges of Year Eleven and are preparing themselves for the onslaught of Year Twelve; confident that they can do anything if they stick together as a team. the springfield anglican college 2012 : 61 success : year eleven 62 : the springfield anglican college 2012 year eleven semi-formal : success Year Eleven Semi-Formal The College witnessed a first for 2012 with Year Eleven students organising their own Social, held at the Spring Lake Hotel on August 10. Helmed by a restructured leadership team, the onus was on the students to lead by example. This was a challenge met with all the principles of the College’s ethos. In their time at the College, whilst donning the white shirt for the last year, they looked to ‘Their Future’. Safe Driver Training, road safety awareness programmes and Schoolies seminars were tabled before these young men and women with commitment to the students beyond the College gates. As they were confronted with the notion of life outside of College, the students buckled down and studied with fervour. With their Formal and Valedictory Dinner to look forward to, students dazzled at both events with the joys of sharing the celebrations with their families, friends and teachers. Yet this was a punctuation mark to a long-fought battle; a battle that they had prepared for and taken to with maturity and discipline: the Queensland Core Skills test. With breakfast provided by the Year Eleven students and the College, the Seniors reminisced over their schooling careers. Mimicking the celebrations for their 100 Days Day, the gravitas of the finality of their time with the College sunk in. Nothing could compare for the days of excitement and reflection that came with the now famous Retreat Week. Under the guidance of Mr Ben Johnston, Mr Richard Clark and Mrs Linda Brummell, these students revelled in their time at Dreamworld, relaxed in the surf at Broadbeach and shared many a tale with their Amazing Race in Brisbane’s CBD. In true College spirit, the final year of TAS sport and Inter-Clan events were met by the students with passion and sometimes face paint. The commitment to the College’s Sporting, Performing and Creative Arts programmes was something many took to with a resolve that became them. A year of celebration; a year of challenge: the Year Twelve cohort has yet again proven to many that to be a Collegian is to be role models of the finest calibre. These role models will again leave their legacy in the world of teamwork, success and community to a campus of high school students, teachers, as well as the wider Springfield area. the springfield anglican college 2012 : 65
