"Grapevine" newsletter for May 2016
Dear Woodside Church family,
It's spring and – as one person said – “the Holy Spirit is running amok at Woodside Village
Church!” We have welcomed three new staff: Misty Reistad, Dave Dickenson and Andrew
'Carnegie' Hall. Each one brings passion, vision and warmth to their position. We also just
welcomed three new babies to our fellowship! Sarah, Adriana and Will were blessed this past
Sunday in worship followed by a wonderful party! In partnership with Peace Builders, we made
dozens of care packages for people in need. And we worked with the One Great Hour of
Sharing campaign to help raise almost $3000 to help refugee families around the world.
Saturday we take part in a wonderful annual village celebration, the May Day Parade. Join the
fun and dress as a pirate, fairy, or mermaid and come and walk or ride in our Neverland float.
The first 20 folks who arrive at church in costume get a free pancake breakfast on the house!
This month, the Women's Fellowship puts on our Spring Boutique and Furniture Sale. So this is
a great time to clear your house of nice things that you are not using and bring them to church
for a good cause. And we are continuing to explore a new ministry venture: The Village Hub
will be a hive of programs to reach and serve our community of Woodside. For more info,
check out www.wvchurch.org/hub.
When new things are happening, even good changes can be unsettling. Whether the change is
integrating church into your life as a family, or whether the change is embracing new initiatives
in the church you have helped carry forward for decades, what gives us strength to navigate
the new is being rooted in God's unchanging love.
This month we celebrate our church’s 123rd Birthday on Pentecost. My prayer is that coming to
church strengthens and challenges us to BE the church, the embodiment of God's love, the
hands and feet of Christ, for one another, our community and our world.
In God's Love,
Spring Weddings

What is Pentecost?
Pentecost is a Christian holy day commemorating the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the
disciples of Jesus Christ, according the New Testament of the Bible.
It is considered the birthday of the universal church.
On the First Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came, people saw what seemed to be tongues of
fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. They began to praise God in many
languages and believers from all over the known world (Asia, Africa, the Middle East and
Europe) were amazed to hear words in their mother tongues. 3000 were baptized that day.
Pentecost is an opportunity to celebrate the power of the Holy Spirit to build unity in diversity.
Often churches recognize the world-wide scope of the church by worshipping in different
languages. Christians see Pentecost as a fulfillment of God’s promise made to the Jews that
through them the nations of the world would be blessed. Pentecost is an expansion of God’s
favor and care from the Jews to include all the people of the world.
