Now that we are at the start of the third millennium, RTVI (known as NTV International until 2003) prides itself on maintaining the same high standards of independent Russian television as it has always done. As an international channel, RTVI’s audience loyalty has grown rapidly, and is now highly respected by viewers around the world. RTVI maintains its own studios in Moscow, Berlin, Tel-Aviv, Kiev, and New York. Our company employs some of the foremost Russianspeaking celebrities among the journalists, anchors, producers, and directors in the Russian and Diaspora-based media. The RTVI project is a cluster of six channels designed to cater for different audiences of all age, occupation or domicile. RTVI’s expansion in Europe, the CIS, and Israel is coordinated by Inter TV Ltd, London, and in the U.S. and Canada, the task is undertaken by Overseas Media Inc., New York. RTVI programming broadcast to target audiences via the Hot Bird satellite owned by Eutelsat SA. RTVI’s package signal is transmitted at 12.322 MHz. Television Television RTVI Channel / Andrei Norkin Vladimir Kara-Murza “RTVI”’s remit is to inform and entertain. Every day we broadcast 6-minute newscasts hourly on events happening around the globe. Also we have three one-hour news blocks on week days, which include comments and analysis on world news with particular focus on Western Europe, the U.S.A., Israel, Ukraine, and Russia. The “RTVI” news service produces its newscasts from what we believe is the least biased and most creditable sources. Victor Андрей Topaller Норкин Our news programs are presented by such well known anchors as Andrei Norkin, Mikhail Osokin, Vladimir KaraMurza, Dmitry Khukhlaev, and Mikhail Rabinovich. “RTVI”’s analytical programs and talk shows that have been drawing consistently high audiences and favourable feedback are also presented by household names such as Alla Baratta, Sergei Buntman, Alexei Vorobyov, Nina Vishneva, Mikhail Jaginov, Assya Istoshina, Evgeni Kiselev, Nikolai Nikolaev, Victor Topaller, and Georgy Tsikhiseli, to name but a few. Television RTVI Channel / Mikhail Rabinovich Our analytical programs stand apart from their contemporaries elsewhere for inviting guests from different corners of the world, who bring a variety of different and at times completely opposite views on issues and events being discussed in programs such as ”The Authority”, “My Point Is...”, “At the Crossroads”, “This Week in Israel”, and “Face to Face”. The channel runs an extensive entertainment program as well – from TV serials to talk shows to full-length feature films. Matvei Ganapolsky Some of our channel’s programming has a pointed regional thrust, as a nod to the cultural traditions in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, European countries, America, and Israel, giving full coverage to local events in a way that keeps viewers in all parts of the globe glued to their screens. Olga Bichkova Much has changed in the programming over the past few years to the benefit of our audiences, with round the clock broadcasting. Television Vlast (“The Authority”) This is a new RTVI program hosted by Evgeni Kiselev, a political analyst of formidable repute. RTVI Programs For many years already, Evgeni Kiselev has written and presented great analytical news programs, filmed documentary series, managed major television companies and newspapers. An influential German paper, “Deutsche Handelsblatt”, has held up Evgeni Kiselev as a symbol of Russian journalism who has adopted a new genre, critical journalism, in Russian television. To air his television projects, Evgeni Kiselev picks the best of the expert breed – political figures and journalists well known to the audiences. No political move the government makes escapes his peering, objective eye. Viewers can have their say on significant issues by phone poll. / Osoboe Mnenie (“My Point Is…”) This program, aired from Monday to Friday, brings its audience the views of famous guests on the latest news events. It is presented by Sergei Buntman, Alexei Vorobyov, Vladimir Varfolomeyev, Olga Bychkova, Lev Gulko, and Matvei Ganapolsky. TV viewers are invited to question the guests by calling the RTVI Moscow studio’s number. The most frequent guests on the program include Sergei Dorenko, Nikolai Svanidze, Leonid Radzikhovsky, Evgeni Kiselev, and Mikhail Leontiev, among dozens of familiar and famous names in journalism and politics. Strana i Ludi (“Country and People”) The “Country and People” program is produced at our Berlin studio. It focuses on people who have defied the challenges of immigration, the language barriers, and the different cultures to start their new lives from square one in Germany and other EU countries. Television In the four years this popular talk show has been on the air, it has played host to over 800 of our compatriots now living in Germany, Israel, America, the United Kingdom, and Canada, each with a unique life story. This program is a stage for discussing the pitfalls and economic and political issues in their newfound homelands. The program is presented by Ludmila Mela. RTVI Programs / Novoe Rassledovanie (“A New Investigation”) The journalist and anchorman, Nikolai Nikolaev has been doing much of his own journalistic investigation for many years, with the reality in Russia presenting ample opportunity for his work. Some bureaucrats in government would try to sweep too many things under the carpet and, rather than making things public, resort to bans, denial and even disinformation. It is beyond Nikolai Nikolaev to find answers to every question asked. What is within his power is to unearth the facts ignored or denied by the prosecutor, the police, and other government organisations. This program is among the most popular that keeps the audience on the edge of its seat from start to finish. Like many of its sister programs, “New Investigation” is an interactive program supporting dialog with audiences using telephones or the Internet. Television RTVI Programs Vis-a-vis s Alla Baratta (“Vis-a-vis with Alla Baratta”) This is a sequence of exclusive interviews Alla Baratta is doing with big names in the world of arts and culture. Ms. Baratta’s guests include writers, actors, singers, stars, and other celebrities from the world of show business who discuss their lives and work in the relaxed conversation. The secret of Alla’s success is her sincere and unaffected interest in all guests, without exception. She has a particular talent for asking guests pertinent, interesting and above all personal questions, and showing her celebrities for what they really are. 10 / Okno v Evropu (“Window on Europe”) “RTVI” airs this program at the request of the European Union. The program consists of news, current affairs, studio discussions, interviews, and debates on major events in the world of politics, economics, culture, education, and social events in today’s Europe. Also covered is an in-depth look at life in the European Union, the pros and cons of the recent accession to the EU for citizens of the Eastern European bloc and discussions of major developments in Belarus, Ukraine, and other postSoviet countries. Subtitles have been added in Belarusian for the benefit of our audience there. The program is presented by Sergei Buntman and Alexei Vorobyov. Perekrestok (“At the Crossroads”) This program originates from our New York studio, and is presented by Victor Topaller, who makes it a point of principle to provoke people into head on confrontation. A casual conversation can be steered skilfully by Topaller into a low-voiced discourse, or into a high-pitched argument. Television Victor Topaller invites prominent journalists, economists, politicians, and social and cultural experts. He only invites people who are on the opposite sides of an issue, no matter what it might be. RTVI Programs / 11 Odin Na Odin (“Face to Face”) Next to the other popular programs broadcast by our studio in Israel, such as “A Week in Israel”, one of the most popular is “Face to Face” with Assya Istoshina. This program is aimed at our Israeli audiences, and all who follow events in that country. Assya Istoshina’s guests include well-known political figures and experts in culture and science, who are all big names both in Israel and beyond. Her colourful interviews are particularly entertaining, bursting with last-minute news, as you would expect coming from one of Israel’s premier journalists. Television Nashe Kino (“Our Movies”) channel 12 / “Our Movies” – is our channel devoted to the Soviet and Russian cinematic classics, airing the masterpieces of the past together with the leading Russian movies. “Our Movies” was the first channel to show Russian films round the clock internationally, in order to satisfy the Russianspeaking market throughout the world. Television Nashe Kino (“Our Movies”) channel / 13 One of the channel’s aims is to introduce its audiences to both the glorious classics of the past and modern projects of contemporary directors. To fulfil this we boast one of the world’s biggest collections of Russian films, past and present, with over 5,500 film titles, ranging from the 1920s to the modern day. In recent years “Our Movies” has been running a thematic series of films from past decades, like “The Dramatization”, ”The Lives of Celebrities”, ”Wind-down”, “The Forgotten Past”,, “Love, Russian Style”, “Golden Oldies in Black and White”, “Case Number…”, ”Gun Man”, and many more. We also find slots in our programs to celebrate the greatest actors and directors and take special pride in broadcasting Russian movies acclaimed as world-class masterpieces of all times. Television Teleclub (“TV Club”) channel 14 / This unique channel “TV Club” was launched in 2003, bringing an entirely new concept to the satellite television market by running nothing but multi-programme series produced in Russia, now the most popular genre among Russian speaking audiences. The channel’s library contains the latest serials from modern Russian filmmakers and TV films of yesteryear, beginning in the mid-1970s, when this genre emerged. Television Teleclub (“TV Club”) channel / 15 Indeed, the “TV Club” has earned its audience’s recognition and loyalty by airing a staggering variety of quality products. For the viewers’ convenience, “Children’s World” and “TV Club” share one frequency, with “Children’s World” coming on the air in the morning through to midday and early evening, to be followed closely by “TV Club”, which takes over at 9 p.m. Moscow time (GMT+3) Television Detskiy Mir (“Children’s World”) channel 16 / “Children’s World” was the first Russian language channel to be tailored specifically for children. It was added to RTVI’s package in late 1998, and has since become the preferred choice among entertainment programs watched by younger Russian-speaking audiences around the world, who give it one of the highest ratings. The channel shows movies loved by several generations of today’s adults, from the magic of fairy-tales from the great innovators, Alexander Rou and Alexander Ptushko, who still capture the young viewers’ imagination, to teary, tragically truthful films from Dinara Asanova and Rolan Bykov. The shortest possible roll-call of genre gurus, whose pictures reappear again and again on the channel’s schedule, would certainly include Alexander Mitta, Leonid Nechaev, Pavel Arsenov, Vladimir Bychkov, Fedor Khitruk, Vyacheslav Kotenochkin, and Yuri Norstein. Television Detskiy Mir (“Children’s World”) channel / 17 “Children’s World” is the pearl of our channel package. It brings a great deal of joy to audiences of every age, even though it is aimed at the younger generation. The best among the Russian language cartoon films and movies made in previous decades are the mainstay of this channel, which airs for eight hours a day, starting in the early morning hours. “Children’s World” took first place in the Hot Bird Awards in 2001 as best in children’s TV programming. It was also nominated for that award in 2004. Television “RTVI-M” channel 18 / In 2005, the Russian national “Muz-TV” Channel was joined by RTVI to start up a project named “RTVI-M”. Since then “RTVI-M” has been included in the RTVI channel package and beamed around the world enjoying enormous success with viewers, only too happy to have a chance to watch and listen to the latest music hits from Russia, from rock to classics, for 24 hours a day. The “RTVI-M” channel can be viewed online at the RTVI web site at: http://tv.rtvi.ru. The RTVI company is working on to promote its channels to mobile services. The next video project we roll out will be a package of “on demand” music video clips by Russian musicians of different genres aimed at younger audiences. Television “RTVI-Info” channel / 19 “RTVI-Info” is the new project of our television company. Though relatively young, it has already captured the attention of Russian-speaking audiences across the world. Newscasts every hour, socio-political and cultural programs and talk shows are the core around which the channel content is arranged. Another feature of RTVI-Info channel is its ever-present SuperShopTV advertising mega block, based conceptually on the teleshopping principle of lengthy advertising programs hosted by presenters with invited experts. As well as talking about promoted goods, they encourage viewers to place orders immediately for goods catching their eye on screen by phoning the studio directly. This way of product selling has proved highly effective on television, and the advertisers gain immediate profits. More importantly, this offers advertisers from different countries the opportunity to advance their products in all countries reached by “RTVI-Info”. RTVI Online RTVI Online RTVI online 22 / Web broadcasting: http://tv.rtvi.com/ February 2005 marked the beginning of an online service running parallel with television. The new service is available 24 hours, seven days a week, at http://tv.rtvi.com/. 2006 saw the development of further RTVI projects through the Internet. At the latest count, our television portal registers up to 30,000 visits a day. Anyone with access to the Web, can watch online any of RTVI’s four worldwide channels – “RTVI”, “Children’s World”, “TV Club”, and “RTVI-M” – plus another one, “RTVI+” (with the core channel content customized for our American audience). A growing audience and varied thematic sections on our web portal make for effective advertising and public relations campaigns. http://tv.rtvi.com/ RTVI Online RTVI online / 23 IP TV projects Recent years have seen large advances in digital technologies and digital IT standards that have been adopted in communication networks and television. Telecommunications are steadily converging as far as different services are concerned, largely on the basis of the Internet Protocol (IP). The RTVI network implements new technologies almost as soon as they hit the market in its broadcasting services and interactive facilities, in order to be in touch with its viewers. We are always on the lookout for new ideas and solutions to keep RTVI attuned to the requirements of fast-paced media and telecommunications. RTVI channels are now within easy reach with packages from leading IP TV operators, such as FREE (France), Telefonica O2 (Czech Republic), Playout247 (UK), Novis (Portugal), to name but a few. BalticRepublics USA Germany CIS Other Countries This is certainly a big head start to continue building on the loyalties of regular Internet and cell-phone users, mostly among the younger generation and professionals. Our Audiences RTVI in 3G cell-phones / 27 Developing video services for mobile devices – cellphones, computers, and communicators – is a priority for the RTVI television company. There are several motivations behind its drive, the principal one being that the RTVI project delivers a self-contained information product, including the latest news, daily and weekly reviews of political and economic developments, in fact just what a modern person finds interesting and important. Producing newscasts in video formats for cell-phones of second and third generations was, then, a logical step that lifts RTVI services to a new level of technology. Advertising on the channels Advertising on the channels Television advertising on satellite channels is a growing field in today’s advertising market development. Slotting TV advertising into niche channel brings the advertisers’ message to the biggest slice of the desired segment of a country’s population. Indeed, RTVI is in high demand among television advertisers. Moderate prices and an individualised approach to every advertiser makes for highly efficient advertising campaigns on RTVI. The company’s studios in London, New York, TelAviv, and Berlin produce superior commercials for our clients. We cover all aspects in the advertising arena from short montages to longer commercials featuring professional actors and computer graphics. The RTVI studios are fully equipped to translate and customise their advertisers’ commercials, with millions of people in more than 50 countries watching commercials carried on RTVI channels. The RTVI channels are included in the packages of leading cable TV operators in Russia, the CIS, the Baltic republics, Germany, Israel, Ukraine, the U.S., and Western and Eastern Europe. Advertising on RTVI channels helps project a company’s image to Russian language audiences both in former Soviet Union countries and in Europe as it expands on both the domestic and foreign markets, with a global reach in sight.
