Over the past couple of years we have heard many
Catholics talk about stewardship. What does
stewardship mean exactly? If you go onto the website
for the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
you will see the following quote, “As each one has
received a gift, use it to serve one another as good
stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Peter 4:10).
Some say Catholic stewardship is one of the most
misunderstood concepts in our Church today. Many
assume that it means “fund-raising” or “write us
another check please”. Stewardship is a way of life. It is finding ways to give
back for what you have been given. It is a way of thanking God for all of His
blessings by returning a portion of the time, talent, and treasure we have
been given.
While our schools and churches rely heavily on the financing of our
stakeholders, there is more to the big picture of this all. Our schools and the
Church need more than money. In order for us to continue to grow, we need
people who share their talents, give of their time, and/or financially donate
to the schools or Church. “You have been told, O man, what is good, and
what the Lord requires of you: Only to do the right and to love goodness,
and to walk humbly with your God” – Micah 6:8.
Mr. Rob Roth, St. Pius X class of 1971 (featured on the front cover) is a
perfect example of stewardship. He has given of his treasure by sending
his children to St. Pius X and contributing/attending our special events.
He has given his time by supporting his children at their activities and
once again, attending our special events. Things are different now. He has
introduced me to a new form of stewardship. You see, he is recently retired
and was looking for something to do a day or two a week. Mr. Roth now
volunteers on Tuesdays, and sometimes more than that, to help Mr. Kausler
with maintenance. You may see him outside mowing the lawn, helping with
the upkeep of the landscaping or he may be inside helping Mr. Kausler out
with whatever is on his list of jobs to get done.
Mr. Roth took on the challenge to be a steward. I challenge you all to
take some time to reflect on your lives. Look at your gifts and talents and
ask yourself, “How am I being a good steward?” Schools and churches are
always looking for help in everything they do. No matter what phase of life
you are in, there are always opportunities to be a good steward. Stewardship
is in all of our hearts, we just have to answer the calling.
Thank you to Mr. Rob Roth, his wife Mary, and children Jeremy’97, Kate’01,
and Emily’05 for all they have done for St. Pius X High School.
If you would like to volunteer your time to St. Pius X High School, please
do not hesitate to contact me at 636-931-PIUS. God will bless you for your
generosity a thousand fold.

In order to open up more time for students to get tutoring during the day and take part in
clubs and groups at a time which does not require them to arrive early or stay after school, St.
Pius X High School will implement a new schedule this year.
Mrs. DeCosty recently read an article about a school which struggled with the same issues
and found this type of schedule to be a solution. After reading the artcile, having several
conversations with the author of the article, and conducting an open discussion session about
this with the faculty, the school has decided to make a bold change to its daily schedule.
School will start at 7:50 and dismiss at 2:45. Instead of holding four lunches per day, we will
all break for one hour. The entire building and back lawn will be “open” for students to eat
when and where they want, meet with teachers for tutoring, and participate in club meetings.
It is quite possible study groups will form and students will be working on group projects
during this time as well. Students will be able to make up tests, labs and workouts as well. This
hour will help students build time management skills which are so important in college life.
Teachers will be given 30 minutes for lunch. The other 30 minutes are required, open door
office hours.

Into The Woods
This past spring the Circle Theater produced
the Broadway classic, Into the Woods Jr. by
James Lapine. Music and lyrics by Stephen
Soundheim.
Fifteen students sang and danced on the St. Pius
X Café Stage for the first time in over a decade
and a half.
The production was well
attended and the students
are eagerly anticipating
next year’s production.

One moment:
I have a tiny body, but I feel so strong,
Nothing is ever going to stop me,
My life has just begun.
I blink:
Older now and I know so much more,
Making connections and loving others

I’m living the life that You have

Years pass by:
Continuing to grow and things tend to

I know that they will always get better.

Athletic Updates
Think Pink Night Rocks the Gym Again!
For the 6th consecutive year, the St. Pius X High
School girls’ basketball program hosted a “Think
Pink” evening for breast cancer awareness and
prevention. This year, the Lancers hosted their
cross-town neighbor, the Festus Tigers. After two
competitive basketball games and an evening of
fun, the event raised almost $3,300 to be donated to
Mercy Jefferson, bringing the six-year donation total
to just over $16,000.00.
Basketball Season ReCap
Both basketball teams had very successful seasons once again as both reached the district semifinals.
The girls’ basketball team finished 18-8 and lost to the eventual Final Four participant Saxony Lutheran
Crusaders in the district semi-finals. Several student-athletes earned post-season award recognition. Junior
Alex Linderer was named JCAA Small School Conference MVP in addition to being named to the AllDistrict team and the KJFF Regional Radio Dream Team. Junior Ashley Politte (1st Team) and senior Haylee
Eastridge (Honorable Mention) were also named to the All-Conference team and Ashley was also named to
the All-District team. We say “good-bye” and “thank you” to our five senior girls; Christina Hovatter, Claire
Reed, Haylee Eastridge, Alex Ottoline and Meghan Karoly.
The Lancer boys finished 14-10 and won their 4th consecutive JCAA Small School Conference
Championship! They lost to eventual district champion Clearwater Tigers in the district semifinals. New
Head Coach Brandon Mayes was named the JCAA Small School Boys Basketball Coach of the Year and
several student-athletes were honored for their success this season. Junior Isaiah Hennessey was named
JCAA Small School Conference MVP in addition to being named to the All-District team and the KJFF
Regional Radio Dream Team. Junior Luke Bandy and sophomore Jevon White were named to the AllConference 2nd Team. We say “good-bye” and “thank you” to our five senior boys; Deiondre Riney, Andrew
Vest, Chris Filer and Kenny Duing-Davis.
MSHSAA Dead Period & Fall Sports
Again this year, St. Pius X will be having a “Dead Period” during the summer where the school and facilities will be closed and the coaches are not allowed to have any contact with the student-athletes. The dates
this year will be Saturday, July 26th through Sunday, August 3rd. Fall practices will start on Monday, August
4th. Check the website over the summer for updated practice/tryout times.
All student-athletes and incoming freshmen will need to have an up-to-date physical on file in the main
office before they will be allowed to practice. The physical must be completed AFTER February 1, 2014 for
it to be in effect for the entire 2014-2015 school. A copy of the physical form and MANDATORY concussion
information can be found on the Athletics page of the St. Pius X webpage. We ask that all physicals be turned
in before August 1st to the main office.
Celebrate with Bokes
Mr. Dan Bokern is retiring after 42 years in
education, 35 years of which were spent at St.
Pius X High School. Mr. Bokern taught religion
and coached boys’ and girls’ soccer. “Bokes” was
inducted into the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame in
2013. St. Pius X High School honored Mr. Bokern’s
acheivement by naming the soccer field after him.
In order to celebrate his retirement, Bokes would like to
invite everyone to participate in an outdoor sports day
at St. Pius X High School. In case of rain, activities will
be moved into the gymnasium.

Parents: Looking for a Way to Volunteer?
The St. Pius X Booster Club would like to invite all parents to volunteer helping us host parent events, fundraisers
and activities which support Fine Arts, Extracurricular Activites and Athletics at St. Pius X High School.
If you are interested in learning about ways you can help, email [email protected].
The Booster Club would like to extend a “thank you” to all parents and friends who volunteered their time and
talents over the past season. We were blessed to have a great group of volunteers this winter.

MAY STUDENT OF THE MONTH
Parker Donovan‘14
is the son of Michelle Donovan-Cudihee and the late Richard Donovan.
Parker is a member of the Church of Our Lady and volunteers for Next
Step for Life and Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. He works at
Busch Stadium and participates in Variety Club. Parker’s high school
courseload includes college credit english, statistics, Concert Choir: honors,
psychology, film, art: honors and religion. Parker earned Renaissance
Honors and also the Dottie Schneider Memorial Service Scholarship
during his high school career.
Parker shares with us one of his favorite quotes:
One of my personal favorite quotes comes from one of my favorite movies, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The quote “ Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t
stop and look around once in awhile, you could miss it” comes at the end
of the film and is a reflection on the crazy events of the movie. The quote,
while coming from what some might call a cheesy eighties movie, actually
has a deep meaning in my opinion and I really treasure what it means to
me.
“ Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in awhile,
you could miss it.” I think that this is a great motto for all to live by. Life does move quickly. I am aware of this because I
will soon be a senior in high school. I feel like I just started freshman year a few months ago! This quote made me realize
I need to continue to make the most out of high school, even though I do not have a lot of time left.
Realizing how little time we have in any phase of ours lives should motivate us to make the most out of it, which this
quote suggests we do. Don’t get so caught up in the negative, try to be positive and get the most out of life. The quote
can be applied to almost any situation or phase of your life you are in, rather it be high school, college, a job, a vacation,
anything really. I believe one should enjoy life as much as they can, you only get one shot at it.
As we all go our separate ways, may Your Spirit be
with us to guide our decisions. May the experiences we
have be stepping stones that build the right path for
our future. As we continue our studies outside the walls
of St. Pius, see that we take the values we learned
into the world. We pray that we always keep a sense
of perspective, and that every night we dedicate our
tomorrows to living pleasing to you. This we pray in
your holy name. Amen St. Pius X – pray for us

College Search Timeline
Now is the time for high school students to begin thinking about how to maximize their
ten-week summer vacation. I’m all for tanning; however, maybe you could tan for
one week and then do something even more productive like volunteering, internships,
visiting colleges or working at a camp for the handicapped. SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS: Have you made a calendar? This calendar should set
down tentative dates for college visits, ACT test dates, family events - everything - until
the day you graduate from St. Pius X. With a calendar you are much more likely to do the
necessary things at the right time in order to chip away at the college search process. This
is THE most important thing to do now! You will not regret it! An example of a calendar
is posted on the College Placement Office website. Marty Zielonko

COLLEGE ACCEPTED SENIORS: When a senior is accepted to a college, it is important for the student to
contact the college’s Admissions Office to inquire about In-House Scholarships. When going on a college
visit, it’s a good idea to send a thank-you note to the representative who helped you. It’s the St. Pius way!
Also, the Housing Deposit should be sent ASAP to assure priority on the master list. There is a special article
on the College Search webpage titled, “I Got Accepted, Now What?.” It answers many questions, some of
which first-time college parents may not know to ask.
THE COLLEGE PLACEMENT WEBSITE: Have you clicked the College Placement Office link on the St.
Pius X High School website homepage? Bryan Kelley ’98 helps me post things practically every day. Check it
out. There is something for every student and parent.
FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid): We received new directives for applying for federal
student aid. Applications can be done ONLINE ONLY. The website is www.FAFSA.ed.gov. Be sure to
obtain your “PIN” (personal identification number) from the same site in order to start and complete the
process. God, you have blessed me with a
beautiful life; a life that is full of
many joys, but also many fears. I often
find that what scares me the most
in life is the unknown; when I don’t
know what the future going to be like
and what is going to happen. Please
give me strength to face that fear,
and approach all aspects of life, the
known and the unknown, with courage.
Amen
