The staff and faculty at Pius X utilized Martin Luther King Jr
Day for in-service and professional development. The day began
with Mass and a message from Father Meysenburg about the
dignity and value we are called to find in the diverse community
of people that makes up Christ's family.
The staff adjourned to the LPAC for a presentation on social
media use by Michelle Hassler and Tori Grdina ('08). Hassler is
an Assistant Professor of Journalism at UNL and Grdina is a
Digital Marketing Strategist at Hurrdat. The duo spoke briefly
about the social media avenues utilized by Pius X and presented
guidelines on appropriate use and utilization of social media by
PXHS organizations.
Pius X currently utilizes a Facebook page and Alumni Facebook
page along with the Twitter handles @PiusXLincoln and
@PiusXtra. We invite you to follow and like them all to stay
up-to-date on happenings in our school community.

Pius X Celebrates Christ’s Global Revelation at
Epiphany Mass
- submitted by Deb Hoge -
Lion Dance was performed by members of the Immaculate Heart of Mary
Parish which included many Pius X students. Lion Dance is a cultural
tradition in China and many Asian countries and is usually performed at
celebrations.
The celebration began with Pius X students, whose families originated
around the world, presenting their native flag.
The word “epiphany" originates from a Greek word meaning “to
reveal.” Pius X celebrated its 2016 Epiphany Mass on Wednesday, January 6, amidst the message that Christ revealed himself
to all people so that He might be Lord of all people.
The presence of a global family of faith exists within the halls of
Pius X High School every day. Eighteen different nationalities
make up the student populace at Lincoln’s only Catholic high
school. Students from each of these nationalities opened the celebration held in the Bishop Flavin gymnasium by carrying the
flag of their family origin in a procession to join the American
flag. Father Ramon Decaen, pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, celebrated Mass alongside five of his brother priests who teach at
Pius X. Fr. Ryan Kaup, assistant pastor of Sacred Heart Parish
and Theology teacher at Pius X, offered the homily.
A Vietnamese Youth Choir performed for their fellow students.
During Mass students read the scriptures and petitions in five different
languages.
Students read the scriptures and petitions in native languages
that included Vietnamese, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, and
Polish, while English translations were displayed on a projector.
Musical numbers both during and after Mass included hymns
sung in Latin, Spanish, and German, as well as a song by the
Vietnamese Youth Choir and an African spiritual performed by
the Pius X Men’s Choir.
Four additional performances took place following Mass with
each receiving loud applause and approving cheers from the
crowd of more than 1,200 students. Each unique performance
highlighted entertainment that embraced all cultures with universal languages of song, music, and dance. Members of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Vietnamese Parish performed the Lion
Dance, a cultural tradition in China and other Asian countries.
Five two-person teams danced to percussion instruments in
brightly colored, traditional costumes. The Lion Dance is usually
performed for celebrations and special occasions.
The dance transitioned to a piano solo performed by 2015 Pius
X graduate Hyunseok Kim. Kim was an exchange student from
Korea and is currently a freshman at the University of NebraskaLincoln where he is studying to be a concert pianist. Current
Pius X junior Joel Enriquez sang a Spanish ballad accompanied
on guitar by Pius X Choir Director Todd Krier. The Lincoln
Southeast Step Chain concluded the assembly by performing
their body music dance routine fueled by percussion generated
through clapping, slapping, and stomping.
Students from 18 countries processed with the flag from their family's
native country.
Director of Guidance Jan Frayser and her team organized the
celebration and stated that, “It was an awesome celebration of
the Epiphany and our rich and wonderful diversity at Pius X.”

Speech Team in the Busiest Part of the Season
- submitted by Nolan DeWispelare -
- submitted by Jared Wilhelm Thank you to Mrs. Burkle and Mr. Houk for all their help this
semester as well as Mr. Murphy and Mrs. Murphy. We wouldn’t
have a band program at Pius X without the hard work of our
elementary band directors. A big thank you goes out to all who
have helped with uniforms, frontline, donuts, receptions, and the
many other volunteer opportunities.
Special thanks to our donors and benefactors, and especially the
Dillon Foundation for their generous donation toward our uniform project. Due to our growth and the age of our instruments,
these generous people have made music possible at Pius X.

The Pius X choral department has gained positive notoriety on a
local level, which is also being noticed beyond our community.
Don Fuson, International President of the Barbershop Harmony
Society, visited Pius X High School on Tuesday, January, 12th.
Pius X Choir Director Todd Krier introduced Fuson to his students.
Courtesy of the Lincoln Pius X High School Official Facebook Page
During his visit, Fuson observed and talked to students in Sotto
Voce, a vocal ensemble class which learns about and performs
classical and other challenging music. After school Fuson listened to performances by some of Pius’ a cappella singing
groups.
The Barbershop Harmony Society works to promote and preserve barbershop music as an art form. The Society is working to
become involved in local communities and, more importantly,
schools. Krier, who is a Harmony Society member, notes that
“the Society has great tools that make our students better and
they love it. Every day our students can be found singing in the
hallways, having fun, and being positive. I think we can all agree
it is a wonderful thing, especially in a society that sometimes
shuts the doors on singing and music, and our children need a
positive outlet.”

On Tuesday, December 29, the Pius X Swim & Dive Team
members and families cooked and served lunch at the Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach. Inspired to give back to the community, the team rose to the occasion under the organization of Mrs.
Sally Heasty (daughter Morgan Heasty is a sophomore on the
team) who purchased food items for the meal from dollars collected from team families. The meal of tomato soup, grilled
cheese sandwiches, fruit, and brownies was a hit on a cold, blustery December day.
In preparation for a full schedule in January and February, the
team headed off to practice afterwards. The Bolts will strike
again in February with several meets in the beginning of the
month along with state competition at the end of the month.
State will be at UNL’s Devaney Center. Diving Prelims and Finals take place Thursday, February 25. Swimming Prelims take
place on Friday, February 26, with the Finals on Saturday, February 27, which are broadcast on NETV’s Public Broadcast Station (PBS) at 11 a.m. Visit www.netnebraska.org.
Matt Talbot Kitchen & Outreach (MTKO) is a faith-based hunger relief and outreach program that was established in 1992.
Devoted to serving homeless and near homeless men, women,
and children, MTKO provides meals twice daily, every day of
the year.
The Bolts are led by Head Coach Mike Witt who is assisted by

- submitted by Deb Schulte Join us for the 31st annual BOLT benefit dinner on Saturday,
April 23. BOLT is an annual fundraiser for Pius X that consists
of a gourmet dinner, live auction, silent auction, and lottery with
cash prizes totaling $15,000. The evening begins at 5 p.m. with
Mass in the Pius X chapel. At 6 p.m., a silent auction and social
hour are held in the Pius X gym with dinner at 7:30 p.m. The
live auction and lottery drawing follow from 8:30-10:30 p.m.
Valet parking is available. Seating is limited so book your reservation early.
BOLT has become larger and more successful each year,
providing over 4.5 million dollars of improvements over the past
30 years. One-third of the proceeds fund the Booster Club’s
special projects while two-thirds of the proceeds finance improvements to the physical facility.
To continue, it takes a commitment from all of us. Please consider sharing your time, talent, and treasure to make BOLT 2016
a success. There are many areas and levels of participation: pray
for the event’s success, volunteer with one of the committees,
make a cash donation, donate to the auctions, purchase a lottery
ticket, sell lottery tickets, and/or attend the event.

Purchase a lottery ticket for $100 for a chance to win: $1000,
$1500, $2500 or the Grand Prize of $10,000. Winners do not

Pius X Band Receives Support for New Uniforms
- submitted by Deb Hoge Pius X High School’s band has received funding from two local
foundations and the support of almost 100 parents, alumni, and
friends on Giving Tuesday which was held on December 1,
2015. The grants and donations, which total more than
$113,000, will be used to purchase new marching and concert
band uniforms.
Courtesy of the Pius X Foundation
Giving Tuesday, held annually on the first Tuesday after
Thanksgiving, is a global philanthropy effort in which charities,
families, businesses, and students around the world are asked to
come together for one common purpose: to celebrate generosity
and to give back.
The Pius family – alumni, parents, and friends – embraced the
spirit of Giving Tuesday and donated more than $13,000. Combined with the recent grants received from the Dillon Foundation
and the Pearle Francis Finigan Foundation, Pius X is only
$15,000 away from the needed $128,000 to purchase the new
uniforms.
“The Dillon Foundation and the Pearle Francis Finigan Foundation have been very generous to us,” shares Pius X Development
Director Michelle Birkel. “We are so grateful for their on-going
support of our school, our students, and our academic programs.”
The Pius X band program has grown to include more than 140
students. Increased interest has resulted in the need to replace
worn and dated uniforms. Repairing and mending efforts have
become difficult as participation in the band has grown, and as
uniforms have reached the end of their useable life. The average
life of a band uniform is eight to ten years with the current uniforms being 11-years old.
“Our band students work very hard, often practicing early in the
morning before school starts,” comments Principal Tom Korta.
“Band and our music program are an important part of our academic curriculum and the educational development of students.
Band teaches many skills that directly relate to other academic
areas, especially study, communication, and cognitive skills, and
to work effectively with others.”
The Dillon and Finigan grants, along with the Giving Tuesday
support, will allow Pius X to purchase 175 new uniforms. This
will improve the availability and variety of sizes and allow all
band members to wear identical and appropriately sized uniforms. Similar to other bands in the Lincoln area, Pius X plans to
utilize a two coat uniform - with one coat for use during marching months and one coat intended for concert band. The two coat
system will save students and parents the cost of purchasing
special concert attire.
The Pius X band students, instructors, and parents are now researching other fund raising opportunities to raise the remaining
funds needed to purchase the new uniforms. If you would like to
support this effort, you may donate, safely and securely, via text
(BAND to 71777) or online at www.piusx.net. Gifts may also be
sent to Pius X High School - Band, 6000 A St., Lincoln, NE,
68510.

You want to diet the way you want to eat
the “rest of your life”.

Preventing Relative Energy Deficiency in Young Female Athletes
It can start innocently enough. A young female pushes herself harder than usual, training intensely to gain a competitive edge. While this increased output naturally requires consuming more calories to meet the total demands of training
and recovery – not to mention growth and development – her
diet does not change. The result is a condition known as
“Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport”, or RED-S.
Coined by an expert panel convened by the International Olympic Committee, REDS is a more comprehensive term that builds on the condition known as the “ Female
Athlete Triad” to describe an energy deficiency gap that results when energy intake
is insufficient to support activities of daily living, growth, health, and functioning.
This syndrome affects bone health, menstrual function, metabolic rate, immune system function, protein synthesis, cardiovascular health, and psychological health.
While more common in females, RED-S also affects young male athletes.
RED-S can develop when there is pressure to change eating habits, especially in
sports with an emphasis on appearance, low body weight, and endurance. Young
girls are also exposed to dieting and other nutrition messages perceived as “healthy”
that are often inappropriately applied to those who are growing, developing, and
training. A desire to “eat healthy” or lose weight in hope of improving athletic performance can increase susceptibility to willful food restriction and rigid dieting.
Girls simply may not understand how their energy needs translate into daily food
choices. An eating disorder does not have to precede the development of RED-S,
though some level of psychological factors can be present before, as well as after the
syndrome develops. Regardless of the starting point, serious short-term and longterm health consequences can occur in young females who develop RED-S.
The effects of RED-S:

Bone health is a major concern as girls build 60 to 80 percent of their lifetime
bone mass by age 18. When pre-teen and teenage girls restrict their eating, body
systems important to bone growth may shut down. Restricted diets also can be low
in Calcium and Vitamin D, which contribute to poor bone formation. If RED-S
continues without being addressed, poor bone growth can lead to stress fractures
and even early osteoporosis in which bones become fragile and more likely to
break.

Another concern is reproductive development. Important markers of insufficient
energy and resulting in low estrogen levels are delayed menstruation and irregular
or missed cycles.

Other potential effects of RED-S include increased risk of injury, decreased endurance, and muscle strength. And, it can reduce response to training, decrease
coordination, impair judgment, and increase irritability and depression – results
that no athlete wants to have happen. The good news is correcting RED-S does not
mean a sacrifice in athletic performance. In fact, it should result in an improvement in athletic performance.
Parents can play a significant role in preventing RED-S. First, educate your daughters on the energy demands of their training and the interconnected relationship of
proper nutrition, bone health, and menstruation, as well as risk of injury and impaired
training from insufficient consumption. Second, keep an eye out for weight loss,
changes in menstruation, and changes in mood.
Finally, create a supportive environment in which girls can consume three meals and
one to three snacks per day. Even missing one meal on a regular basis can result in
an energy deficit. Make sure your daughter has a regular breakfast and packs or eats
a full lunch at school. Many girls train after school, and an easily digested snack prior to practice can provide energy for training. Good snack choices include an energy
bar, cereal, crackers, banana, fruit and fruit juice, pretzels, and peanut butter and jelly
sandwiches.
