Summer 2012 - Home of the Innocents
SECOND QUARTER l VOLUME 76 l SUMMER 2012
Respectful Support for Families,
Compassionate Care for Kids
A toddler’s health is improved because he
receives basic dental care. A teen learns to
express her feelings through art lessons. A
young adult gains important independent
living and life skills from community mentors.
A medically fragile child attends school in a
safe, appropriate environment. All of this
happens under one roof at Home of the
Innocents – because our focus is providing
exceptional care for the whole child through
integrated health care.

Deborah came to the Home’s Aftercare
Program pregnant and homeless. We provided
Deborah with an apartment and helped her
complete the process of getting her GED. She
learned to take care of her newborn and also
learned basic financial literacy to help her
transition to independence. Today, Deborah is
a successful medical assistant, and she has
returned to the Home to offer words of
encouragement to inspire other Aftercare
clients.

Super Bowl
MVP
Deion Branch Tackles
Meningitis to Honor His Son
By Katie Moisse
Reprinted with permission by ABC News
Deion Branch is famous for catching
Tom Brady’s touchdown passes, a role
that earned him Super Bowl MVP in
2005. But off the football field,
Branch is raising awareness and funds
to tackle meningitis in honor of his
son.
Branch was 21 years old when his
twin boys, Deiondre and Deiontey,
were born in Louisville, ky. Small but
strong, the twins ‘toughed out’ two
weeks in intensive care before coming
home from the hospital, yet six days
later, Deiondre would be back.
“He wasn’t eating. And he’d cry when
you picked him up,” said Branch,
recalling the new-parent panic that
prompted a late-night trip to the
emergency room.
A series of tests revealed Deiondre
had meningitis, inflammation in the
lining of his nervous system triggered
by a viral infection.
“The disease was already taking over
his body,” said Branch. “The doctors
gave him six months to live.” But
Deiondre fought hard and lived
despite irreversible brain damage. He
is now 11, and although he can’t walk
or talk, he lights up when he sees his
dad.

Deion Branch Tackles Meningitis, Cont...
“He always smiles and he’s always going to make
me smile,” said Branch. “It’s an honor to have him
for a son.”
“The love of family is one of the best medicines
there is, so I’m very much in admiration of
Deiondre’s family because they are so committed
to their son,” said Brown. “They love him and he’s
a very important part of their lives. And that’s
something we should all celebrate.”
Branch, who also has two younger daughters
with his wife Shola, said he looks forward to the
day Deiondre can play with his siblings.
“I know deep down inside he will,” he said.
Continued on page 3
Because Deiondre needs constant care, he lives at
Home of the Innocents, a Louisville non-profit
that cares for medically fragile children.
“He is beloved by his family and the staff here,”
said Gordon Brown, president and CEO of
Home of the Innocents. “He’s one of those kids
who always has a smile on his face.”
Brown said kids like Deiondre who beat the odds
make his job worthwhile.
“We see this kind of hopeful stuff happen all the
time, and you never get callous to it,” he said.
“You always get that emotional charge every time
you start to see progress; every time something
works out better than predicted. It’s wonderful to
be part of that.”
Deiondre gets regular visits from his mom and
brother, Deiontey, who live in Louisville. And
Branch makes the trip down from Foxborough,
MA, every chance he gets.
Deion Branch is famous for catching Tom Brady’s touchdown
passes, a role that earned him Super Bowl MVP in 2005.

Finding a Forever Family
The Challenges and Rewards of Adoption
Aaron Russell is an extraordinary child with a
wonderful story of how the Home’s programs
and staff work together to provide the best care
of our kids. A little over two years ago, Aaron
was placed in a foster home through Home of
the Innocents’ Therapeutic Loving foster Care
(TLC) program. Despite having to overcome
the obstacles of his traumatic life with his birth
family and his own autism, Aaron was able to
form a close bond with his foster mother as well
as other TLC foster families. After being in this
Aaron poses with his sister, Nici, during a recent tour
of a Louisville Metro Firetruck.
home for about 6 months, it became apparent
that Aaron would not be returning to his birth
family and would need to find a forever family
through adoption. Although he and his foster
mother had a close bond and Aaron was happy
in her home, she was not in a position to adopt
him.
Fortunately, Doreen Russell and Terri
Behan, another foster family – and friends of
Aaron’s foster mother – had been providing
respite care for Aaron, and were prepared to
provide a permanent home for him. Doreen,
Terri, and their adoptive daughter, Nicci,
welcomed Aaron into their home with open
arms. The family took on a role not only as care
providers for Aaron, but also, as advocates on
his behalf. By working together with their TLC
family consultant and Aaron’s therapist, the
family was able to engage many services for
Aaron that have helped him thrive.
Through joint efforts between Home of the
Innocents staff and his foster parents, Aaron
began receiving physical therapy, speech
therapy, and occupational therapy services
while in this foster home. Aaron came into the
Home with few resources to communicate his
needs. He is now fluent in American Sign
Language and is learning to communicate
verbally as well. Additionally, Aaron was able
to be fitted with shoe inserts to assist with his
comfort and mobility. He was also able to take
advantage of Autism services through Home of
the Innocents, which included behavioral
the rapy to assist hi m with developi ng
relationships and improving behaviors.
The adoption process was hard work for the
entire team, especially his prospective parents.
They were integral in the acquisition of most of
the services he’s receiving; however, their work
wasn’t just about getting services for Aaron. It
also included developing a healthy attachment
to a youngster whose disabilities and personal
history presented barriers to forming positive
relationships. The dedication of Doreen and
Terri to Aaron’s well-being created an
environment where he was able to flourish, not
only cognitively and developmentally, but
emotionally, as well. Aaron and his now
adoptive parents formed a healthy attachment
that is admirable and helped them navigate the
many barriers standing in their way.
Aaron’s adoption was final in November
of 2011. In preparation for this wonderful
event, the Home’s staff were able to refer Aaron
for Kentucky Impact Plus services postadoption, which have allowed him to continue
to receive his Autism services through the
Home. Additionally, he has continued to
receive physical therapy, speech therapy, and
occupational
therapy as
well. With his

Deion Branch
Tackling Meningitis
Continued from page 2
Branch also
started a charity
called the Deion
Branch
Foundation to
raise awareness
about meningitis
in children and
funds for medical
care and research. The last Saturday
of April, he and Deiontey pushed
Deiondre in his wheelchair for the
Kentucky Derby Festival minimarathon. They raised $27,000. “It
was great. I’m looking forward to
doing it every year,” said Branch.
Juggling a hectic training and travel
schedule, on top of family life and
philanthropy, is no easy feat. But
Branch said he knows it’s what he
has to do.
“I think God puts certain things on
your plate, and he’s not going to give
you more than you can handle,” he
said. “At first I thought, ‘This is hard.’
But then I think [Deiondre’s]
fighting a daily battle. I’m playing a
game I love.”
Branch said he hates being away
from his family during football
season. But for now, he has to be a
provider. “I love this game, but I’m
only going to play football for so
long,” he said. “I’m going to have my
son forever.”
Please join us for an enlightening
lunch hour. We’ll provide lunch and a

Spotlight
You can make a difference, too,
remembering the Home...
Judith Bloor can usually be seen walking
quickly to her next meeting with a smile on her
face, greeting everyone she passes along the
way. She has been helping children and families
in crisis at Home of the Innocents for over 19
years. A Licensed Marriage and Family
Therapist, Judith is also the Senior Vice
President of the Childkind Center, encompassing all residential and community-based
services at the Home that serve children who
have been abused, abandoned, or neglected,
children in foster care, children with Autism,
and children with other exceptional needs.
Judith’s decision to support Home of the
Innocents in her will was sparked by a comment made by Gordon Brown, President and
CEO. He said, “We [as employees] believe in
the mission. If we don’t invest, how can we ask
others to?” Her attorney helped her to create a
plan that would “make a real, significant, and
meaningful impact on Home of the Innocents,”
as opposed to spreading smaller gifts among
several charities. It was important to
her to have a will that included remembering
her aging mother and other family members.
While she was raised in the mid-west, her
story starts in California as a marriage and
family therapist. She and her husband, Bill,
now deceased, were struggling with the cost of
living in California and missed family that
lived hundreds of miles away. Together they
decided it was time to move closer to their
loved ones. They narrowed their search down
to a few cities and then literally picked
Louisville out of a hat. Judith worked for
non-profits that helped women and children
suffering from abusive situations. Eventually,
she landed at Home of the Innocents. She
arrived at a great time in the history of the
Home, as it was evolving and growing to meet
the needs of children in the community. The
Childkind Center, with over 2,200 clients per
year, has been under her supervision for over
19 years.
Judith feels deep satisfaction knowing her gift
will help to ensure that children and families
will get the help they need for generations to
come. “I am not a wealthy person but I have
found that I can do more than I thought,” said
Judith about including the Home in her will.
She smiled, “I can make a difference.”
Please consider remembering Home of the
Innocents in your will. Contact Lisa Cobb,
