Esperanza is looking to
replace and restock
emergency supplies in
case of fire, earthquake,
lockdown and more. We
are looking for monetary
donations to help ensure
the safety of Esperanza
students in an emergency
situation. All donations can
be turned into the Finance
office. Please help us equip
Esperanza with the safety
materials that are needed in
an emergency situation.
Greetings Aztecs! We are well underway into the 3rd
quarter and amazingly, graduation is just a few
months away!
On February 3rd, Esperanza was proud to celebrate
“Signing Day” with the athletes who will be going on
to play college sports.
The following student athletes were recognized for their
hard work and success:
Megan Arnold- Softball, BYUM
Megan Lancaster- Volleyball, UC Davis
Alexis Borden- Softball, Univ. of Penn
Ryan Cooper- Baseball, UC San Diego
Jasmine Lee- Softball, UC Davis
Austin Pettibone- Baseball, UC Santa Barbara
Kelsea Roth- Softball, Missouri
A. B. Ogiamiem- Soccer, Nevada
Brittany Virgoe- Softball, Northwestern
Kelly Lucas- Soccer, Humboldt
Courtney Kay- Soccer, Cal State San Marcos
Elise De Jesse- Soccer, Southern Oregon
Scott Rice- Soccer, Cal State San Marcos
Vanessa Weaver- (sports) Univ. of Penn
Gathering in the gym, these student athletes signed their scholarship
papers and took photos with family and friends. Congratulations to all!
During the month of March, the counselors will be visiting Language
Arts Classes for the Needs Assessment portion of registration. They will
also meet individually with each student to review their course
selections and assist them with college planning. The following week
they will begin registration at the middle schools. In addition, they are
currently meeting with all seniors planning to attend community college
to assist them with the registration process.
We just held a parent orientation meeting for our incoming 8th grade
students who qualified for our Distinguished Scholar program. We
described this academic program as far as what classes their student
will be taking, what test scores they must uphold, and also what grade
point average must be held. There were about 130 parents and
students in attendance to hear the information on this great program.

Principals Message Cont.:
On March 23rd at 6pm we will be holding our 8th grade parent/student night which will showcase all the clubs,
activities, and sports available at Esperanza. Parents and students will have the opportunity to hear about
the campus, the counselors about course options, be a part of an Esperanza pep rally, and
experience the Esperanza campus. This should be a fun night for all of our incoming Freshmen, class of
2015.
It is hard to believe that the second
semester is well under way and we
are headed into the last half of the
year already. The PTSA has been
busy putting together many
wonderful programs for our
Esperanza students and parents!
Our Aztec University Parent Education Program
continues to be a success! The FAFSA night in
January saw attendance at over 200 parents and
students! The PTSA in conjunction with Princeton
Review just completed our offering of a “Mock” SAT/
PRA/ACT Exam on Saturday, Feb. 26th. We had over
150 students take the exam and receive feedback on
their scores the following Wednesday evening. Our
final offering in our Aztec University Series is the
Pathways to the Future Event that will be held on
our Esperanza Campus (but is hosted by all of the
high schools in our district) on April 6th. Please be
sure to attend this event as you will have the opportunity to select your choice of three different short
sessions ranging from UC Admissions, Community
Colleges, Scholarships, Financial Aid, NCAA Requirements, College 101, etc. Over 20 different workshops
will be offered.
The PTSA is also preparing to recognize deserving
individuals with our Honorary Service Awards
evening on March 21st, our Creative Arts Awards
evening on March 28th and our Distinguished Aztec
Academic Recognition evening in May!
Our PTSA Nominating Committee has also been
working on our new slate of officers for the 2011-2012
school year. Elections will be held at our General Association Meeting on March 21st. It is never too late to
get involved and we are always looking for volunteers!
their Emergency Supplies. A list of items needed is
again included in this newsletter if you are able to help
with donating actual supplies or a monetary donation.
Every little bit helps! We as a PTSA voted to donate
$500.00 towards this project and would like to donate
more if our budget permits. Your help with any donations is much appreciated!
Finally, we have a new event that we are putting on in
April and we need your help! We will be having a
Ford “Drive One for Your School” Fundraiser on
Saturday, April 2nd from 8:00am till 2:00pm at
Fairway Ford. All you need to do is come down to
Fairway Ford (on Yorba Linda Blvd by Rose Drive)
between those hours, fill out a simple questionnaire,
test drive a car of your choice and Esperanza PTSA
will receive $20.00 for each test drive. Drivers must
be at least 18 years old. We have a potential to make
$6,000 for our school if 300 drivers come down and
participate. This is a wonderful “no cost” way for you
to support Esperanza. Please put it on your calendar
to come down and do a test drive for your school on
April 2nd. Also, please invite family, friends, sports
teammates and whoever is in your “circle of influence”
to support this program. Programs like this allow us to
utilize the money for the many needs that Esperanza
and its students have.
Thank you for your dedication to this wonderful
school!

Hey Aztecs!
It’s been a really successful and fun month for our
PTSA! Our Staff Appreciation co-chairs, Tiffany
Le and Katy Edgerley and their committee made
and passed out Valentines to all of the Esperanza
faculty to show them how grateful we are. We finally had our Mix It Up Luncheon after months of
planning, and our hard work really paid off. 70 students attended a lunch where they met new people
from all over Esperanza. Congratulations to MIUL
chair Jack Fixa and his committee for this very fun
event. Check out our PTSA page on the EHS website for pics! Coming up this month, we have our
Creative Arts Awards night, where we celebrate all
of our student artists. Talented artist Ellen Kang is
co-chairing this event. Our Honorary Service
Awards, co-chaired by Mariam Giurgius, will take
place on March 21st. This annual event recognizes
those who go above and beyond on our campus.
8th Grade Parent Night, chaired by Irene Park, allows incoming freshman to experience a night of
Esperanza clubs. We will also be having a car wash
in conjunction with our Ford Fundraiser, which
takes place on April 2nd. This is a busy month, so
come out and support all of our events! Here's the
students on the PTSA board slate for the 20112012 school year: Eric Arellano, VP of Fundraising; Christie Nguyen, VP of Student Leadership;
Alli Heller, VP of Student Activities; Sam Chang,
VP of Communications; Tiffany Lee, Deputy Recording Secretary. Additionally, we are looking for
involved students to apply for our 2011-2012
chairmanships. There will be more information at
our upcoming general meeting in the library on
March 7th at 4:15 pm.

4th Annual PTSA Creative Arts Awards
On Monday, March 28th, the Esperanza High School library will be transformed into an art gallery for
the 4th Annual PTSA Creative Arts and Reflections Award Ceremony. Esperanza’s PTSA is
pleased to host this cultural event of music, art, poetry and prose. This program was developed to
recognize and honor the artistic talents of Esperanza students. As they arrive at 6:30 pm , guests
will be treated to a live performance by members of our EHS Orchestra. This evening will include a
reading of the “First Place” and “Best of Division” entries in the Language Arts division and a
power-point presentation featuring all the winning Visual Arts pieces. Best of Division, 1st, 2nd, and
3rd place students will be awarded ribbons and cash prizes. Projects that placed in the PTSA
Reflections program will also be showcased and prizes will be awarded, with
entries from the Visual Arts, Photography, and Musical Composition divisions on
display for all to enjoy. Refreshments and light desserts will be served after the
Awards Ceremony.
All students and their families are invited to attend this special evening dedicated
to the Arts. If you are unable to attend our awards ceremony, the artwork will be
on display Monday and Tuesday, during the school day. Please show your
support for the Arts by enjoying this annual exhibit.

Aztec Buddies
Best Buddies is a program at Esperanza which focuses on providing peer to peer relationships between a student with special
needs and a general education student. The goal is to provide
meaningful friendships and is greatly appreciated by parents of
special needs students. These students meet once a week for
lunch, stay in touch through phone calls and e-mails, and get together for monthly events. Esperanza membership includes approximately 60 general education students and 50 special education students.
Economically speaking, Best Buddies volunteers annually contribute, at no cost to their communities, support services that
equate to more than $164 million USD. Founded in 1989 by Anthony Kennedy Shriver, Best Buddies is a vibrant, international
organization that has grown from one original chapter to almost
1,500 middle school, high school, and college chapters worldwide. Best Buddies programs engage participants in each of the
50 United States, and in 50 countries around the world. Best
Buddies’ seven formal programs – Best Buddies Middle Schools,
High Schools, Colleges, Citizens, e-Buddies, Jobs and Ambassadors – positively impact nearly 700,000 individuals with and
without disabilities worldwide.
‘I love this program and I have watched it go from a few students
to a full chapter’ - Karen Tapia, Special Education Advisor.
ATTENTION PTSA SENIORS
PTSA Scholarship applications are
available beginning March 1, 2011. Please see your
counselor for an
Esperanza High School 2011
PTSA Scholarship application.
Applications are due March 30, 2011, by 3:00pm.
Recipients will be notified in May and presented at
the
Senior Awards Night in June.
As students with disabilities are often isolated, Esperanza Best
Buddies chapter is especially grateful to Karen Tapia, Roger
Galvan, Norberto Colin, and Travis Jordan for their efforts
above and beyond in providing special education students with
opportunities for socialization.
Good Luck to all PTSA Seniors
