The best thing we can give this season is of our charitable spirit and generous nature to our “community”. In last month’s article, I wrote about the Fair on the Square and what a tremendous event it is for this community. It brings out the best in many individuals and fosters the sense of community. Another great example of how this community comes together for the good of all is during the fall festival time. Some entities prefer to call it Halloween, but no matter the name, many organizations, churches and other groups put together wonderful events for children and families to enjoy during this time of the year. Everyone has a great time visiting with friends and neighbors, as well as making new acquaintances. These are just a few examples of how we can find ways to better nurture the “sense of community”. Yet another way to celebrate “community” is the upcoming Chamber Gala. Be sure to get your tickets as it is always the highlight of the chamber year, and once again promises to be a fun-filled evening, with something for everyone. You will want to arrive in time for the reception and silent auction as it is a great place to get a head start on your holiday shopping. We sincerely look forward to seeing you there…and let’s celebrate together!! A former mayor of Abilene, Texas, Dr. Gary McCaleb once said “we can budget for great structures of steel and concrete, but no one can purchase community. It can only be realized as a result of people who care enough to give of themselves to that very special cause known as community.” So as we continue to market our community and our businesses, my sincere wish is for all of us to partner TOGETHER and be committed to a sense of community! I hope to see many of you around town soon. So for now, HAPPY TRAILS!! Best Regards, Carol Smith, YOUR President ECONOMIC INDICATORS OUR COMMUNITY …WHAT A GReAT PLACe TO CALL HOMe! “Huntsville, Texas….aren’t you glad you live here!! This familiar quote from a wellknow radio personality who loves this community as much as anyone and is very proud of his heritage here reflects the sincere feelings of many of us around these parts. If you’ve lived here for any time at all, you most likely Carol Smith. have grown to love it here as well. You’ve also heard me say before, and you’ll hear me say many times again how very proud I am of this community and its people. Most of you know that as a fifth generation Huntsville native I have lived here all my life except for a few years that Eddie and I moved to the west coast for his work. My grandmother and her three siblings (as well as their father) were all born here and were graduates of Sam Houston Normal Institute. Just a bit of trivia…November 19 is actually the 197th birthday of our great, great grandfather, Alexander W. McKenzie who moved his family here in April, 1857. They came to Walker County because “the crops were good and the society refined” as quoted in one journal. This story is not unique at all, just special to me and my family, and quite similar to many, many other local families. I share all this history to illustrate one major point…this IS a great place to work, live and raise families. Those early settlers, including the family of Sam Houston, saw it then, and it’s still true now, “crops are good and the society refined”. It’s also reflective of how hard work and commitment makes Huntsville and Walker County the great area it is. We are moving into the season of thanks and giving, so I encourage each and everyone to dig a little deeper into your hearts this year to do your part to get this wonderful community bonded together once again future. Planning and budgeting are critical to eliminate a surprise tax liability at year end. We offer Continued from page 1 assistance in selecting the appropriate business entity type and offer technical guidance in structuring an appropriate accounting system for a new business. Existing businesses must be alert to change in legislation which ‘changes the rules’ for their business and results in a need to modify their system. It’s a constant evolution. Our mission is to educate our clients so that they can make informed business decisions. Lack of compliance and/or understanding of tax implications can be costly.” Mrs. Dixon graduated Summa Cum Laude from Sam Houston State University. Additional course work was completed at Rice University, University of Madrid, and SPOTLIGHT bUSINeSS SeMINARS Social Media Marketing Made easy Tuesday, November 30, 2010 - Noon-1:15 pm • Free The SHSU SBDC is offering a free Webinar in their Computer Learning Center on Social Media Marketing Made Easy on Tuesday, Nov. 30 from Noon-1:15pm. Cha ri er B mb Team Synergy received high ratings from the 20 members in class 29 of the Huntsville Leadership Institute following a challenging and fulfilling day at the Ropes Course. Team Synergy has been working with the Huntsville-Walker County Chamber of Commerce for several years providing a program to enhance team building amongst the HLI participants and challenging each person individually as well. “Team Synergy is here to help your organization discover an exciting educational adventure and bonding experience. We provide schools, universities, and church groups with experiential education courses designed to help participants learn to problem solve more effectively, communicate more efficiently and help participants recognize his/her untapped potential.” Working together as a group is what makes the Huntsville Leadership Institute such a success each year. Each year the previous class works together to provide breakfast and lunch for the class and to offer encouragement as the participants work thru different problem solving activities. They also are there to be “cheerleaders” to the current class as they strap on helmets and harnesses in preparation of conquering three areas of high rope elements. Board members and other HLI alum also tend to show up each year to offer “high fives” and “a job well done”. Vinessa Mundorff, one of the class members, stated “Wasn’t sure what to expect with the high ropes, but what a challenging day! The synergy team was great…good way to work with one another!” Some of the photos from the experience are included in this article.
