One of the most visible changes is the newly refurbished clock, which is not only working and telling the correct time, but the faces have now all been restored and look wonderful. Thanks are due to Peter and Gail Randal who have worked hard to lead the fund raising appeal. Although Matthew who repaired the clock has completed the work, there is still a balance to pay and so contributions to the appeal are still welcome. Through the year we have continued to have a good number of children in Sunday School and Sunday Youth, and after they have joined us in church at the Holy Communion we enjoy hearing the interesting things they have been doing. The children are growing in confidence as they get used to reporting back to the church congregation. The uniformed organisations continue to thrive and thanks are due to all the leaders of the children’s groups who work so hard throughout the year. As well as looking back, we look forward this month to the church’s new year, which begins in Advent. During this month we prepare for Christmas – not just the festivities and the presents, but the reason for the great celebrations that the season brings. It is sad that the present buying and parties can often take priority over the real reason for the celebrations. In the midst of our business we can almost forget how amazing it is that God himself came into our world in the person of Jesus Christ. There are plenty of opportunities to celebrate this great event at our services over the Christmas season, which will again include the Christingle service which was enjoyed by many last year. The time for this service has been put back this year to enable more people to attend. By the time the magazine is published collecting candles should be available for all children to take to collect money for the work of the Children’s Society. At the service these ‘candles’ will be exchanged for a Christingle orange which will be lit during the service. All are welcome to come, with or without children. May I wish you all a very happy and blessed Christmas, and a happy and healthy New Year. Yours in Christ Brenda. 3 R.M.A NEWS 87 Coleridge Road, Sholver AKRAM’S PAPER SHOP Newspapers, Magazines, Greetings Cards Sweets, Chocolates Cigarettes Ice-Cream Drinks Milk Bread PLUS MUCH MORE!! On the 6th November Orange Class took part in a linking project with St James and Burnley Brow. Some of Orange Class went to St James or Burnley Brow while others stayed at our school and waited for the other children to arrive. Basically, everyone was mixed up from friends and encouraged to make friends with other children. They did a full range of activities all day until it was time for them to return to their schools. In the morning, the first activity was plaiting with an artist called Claire. The plaiting was done with ribbons in the colour of the school uniforms. Fun activities were played up to lunchtime when everyone went to get their lunch. Claire visited all of the schools and came back to our school to do clown collages, which can be seen in the orange class classroom, that were fantastic! A philosophy for children session followed after the fantastic art session to end the exciting day. As Christmas is approaching, lots of activities are happening in school. The Christmas Fair is well on its way and non-uniform days have been organized for the chocolate and bottle tombola. The Christmas pantomime (at the Oldham Coliseum) is an exciting event with the younger children, the whole school are going! This year’s show is Aladdin and the seats will be filled by children. We are lucky that F.O.S.T are paying for the cost of the children and the whole school. Reception and nursery are rehearsing for their Christmas Nativity and so are key stage 1. I hear they have ninja turtles in this year’s performance! The Christmas lunch is on the last week of term and the cooks will be making a delicious Christmas dinner. The Christmas service is on the last day of term and we are already rehearsing our songs in choir with Miss Davis. As an old man stood standing, listening to the song, Midst all the madness of the bustling throng, In a shaky, hoarse voice he began to join in Singing the words of the famous old hymn. One by one people stopped with their madness To join with the old man for a moment of gladness, By the time the carolers finished with singing the song, The whole throng was united as they all sang along. As if by magic from out of the sky Church bells rang out for a chapel nearby. And when it was over the people greeted each other With messages of good will they shared with one another. You see, that magical lift the shoppers sought for so long, Was not in the buying or scurrying along. That magical gift so desperately sought Was the Spirit of Christmas - which could never be bought. --Tom Krause, c 2012 Moorside & District Historical Society January 19th 2015 7.30pm New Updates Times Past Ancestral Weather Drought – Lightning – Snow – Seasons etc. 9 Readings for December/January December Sunday of Advent 1st Reading Isiah 40 : 1 – 11 2nd Reading 2 Peter 3 : 8 -15a Gospel Mark 1 : 1-8 14th December 3rd Sunday of Advent Isiah 61 : 1-4, 8 - end 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-24 John 1 : 6-8, 19-28 21st December 4th Sunday of Advent 2 Samuel 7: 1-11, 16 Romans 16 : 25-end Luke 1: 26-38 24th December Midnight service 11.30pm Isiah 52 : 7-10 Hebrews 1 : 1-14 John 1: 1-14 25th December Christmas Day Isiah 9: 2-7 Titus 2: 11-14 Luke 2 : 1-14 28th December 1st Sunday of Christmas Isiah 61 : 10-62: 3 Galatians 4: 4-7 Matthew 2: 13-18 JANUARY 4th January Epiphany Isiah 60: 1-6 Ephesians 3: 1-12 Matthew 2: 1-12 11th January The Baptism of Christ Genesis 1: 1-5 Acts 19: 1-17 Mark 1: 4-11 18th January 2nd Sunday of Epiphany 1 Samuel 3: 1-10 Revelation 5: 1-10 John 1: 43-end 25tt January 3rd Sunday of Epiphany Genesis 14: 17-20 Revelation 19: 6-10 John 2: 1-11 FEBRUARY 1st February 4th Sunday of Epiphany Deuteronomy 18: 15-20 Revelation 12: 1-5a Mark 1: 21-28 7th 2nd 10 Rotas for December & January Sidespersons Readers Prayers 7th Dec 14th Dec 20th Dec 21st Dec 24th Dec 25th Dec 28th Dec Joan T & Victor Zelda & Bev Corinne Vivien & Margaret Chris & Ken Sue & Millicent Adam & Joanne R Lisa S & Millicent Lisa P Wai & David Gail & Peter Sue & Millicent Sue & Joan Gail Julie G Elaine Lynn Julia Lisa S 4th Jan 11th Jan 18th Jan 25th Jan Laura & Gianna Elaine & Lindsey Millicent & David Sue & Debra Lindsey & William Lisa P Wai & David Joan T & Millicent Gail Julie G Elaine Lynn 1st Feb Joan T & Victor Gail & Peter Julia CLEANERS ALTAR SERVERS 7th Dec 14th Dec 21st Dec 24th Dec 25th Dec 28th Dec Susan, Bev & Diane Kathy, Karen & Chris ALL TEAMS Lynn, Tracy & Chris Jacob & Daniel Liam & Thomas Iona & Sophie F Ting Ting Jacob & Ben Matthew & George P 4th Jan 11th Jan 18th Jan 25th Jan Elaine, Viv & Janet Louise & Natalie Kathryn & Helen Kathy, Karen & Chris Liam & Holly Iona & Lucas Ben & Hannah & Ella Jacob & Ting Ting 1st Feb Susan, Bev & Diane Matthew & Areya 11 Moorside Cricket & Bowling Club Turf Pit Lane, Moorside, Oldham OL4 2ND Tel : 0161 624 1398 Email:[email protected] T Hire the club for functions and parties (Birthdays, Anniversaries, Weddings, Christenings and Funerals etc.) Full details available from the Bar Staff or email us as above Visit our new website:www.moorsidecricketandbowlingclub.co.uk Fancy joining a team? Thanks to all who attended, all the stall holders and helpers in setting up and tidying away. We raised £664 selling toys on the popular toy stall, selling Nanna Martin’s knitted items and the annual St Thomas' calendars. It has proved to be a great success so we will host another next year. We still have some events before Christmas. On Thursday 27th November at 7.30pm is the Party Lite candle party in the church hall. Come along and buy some beautiful candles and home scents. All orders will be delivered in plenty of time for Christmas, so get those special people in your life a gift to remember. Entry is free, and there will be nibbles and drinks. It will be a relaxed evening, so bring friends and family with you. On Sunday 14th December, 2 - 4.15pm we are holding our Children's Christmas Party. This year we are hosting 'Walking in a Onesie Wonderland'. All the children will be asked to come to the hall in their onesie or PJ's (with undergarments please!!). They can bring a blanket and pillow/cushion. We will have a screen where we will be showing a children’s favourite Christmas movie, Nativity 2. The STYLE ladies will be the cinema usherettes, serving hot dogs and ice cream with drinks etc. A ticket to the event costs £3 per child which covers the cost of the food only. STYLE will provide the rest. There is a list at the back of church. Please put your child's name on the list and get tickets from Corinne and Lisa. First come first served, limited spaces! Last, but certainly not least, most of the STYLE ladies will be having our Christmas party at Clough Manor this year - a Tina Turner tribute night on Saturday 13th Dec. I suspect there may be some delicate heads at the children's Christmas party the following day as the STYLE ladies do know how to party!!!! Another successful year draws to a close for STYLE. We have held our fabulous clothes parties, the family fun day, candle parties etc. Also this year, we had our first STYLE weekend away for Zelda’s big Birthday which was wonderful and will become another annual social event. STYLE will be up and running again in January 2015 for their first meeting, planning all the social and fund raising events for 2015. If you would like to meet some new friends and raise funds for our church please come along to the choir vestry on the first Tuesday of every month at 7.15. We are always happy to welcome new friends. Merry Christmas and a STYLISH new year. During November, work on the fourth and final clock face/dial was completed and Matthew Warburton was paid for all the work he had done. Some of you may have visited the clock room when the church tower was open during the Heritage weekend and would have seen the difference between the three completed dials and the one still needing restoration. The work involved fitting new brackets, some plastering, replacing all the Perspex and painting the metal framework of the dial and clock hands. The restoration of the clock mechanism had already been completed by Matthew some months earlier. Once again, we have a clock in working order which is illuminated at night and which is a prominent landmark, drawing attention to the presence of our church. Did I catch a glimpse of our church tower during an episode of Scott and Bailey? Our handbell ringers have a busy time over the Christmas period and have worked hard to extend their repertoire of festive pieces. We have been pleased to welcome two new members to the team, Donald Feber and Viv Hogarth and hope that Joan Marshall will be back with us again in the New Year when her broken wrist has healed. Listen out for the tower bells when we ring for the Christmas services – you should hear some well- known Christmas tunes. Ding Dong! Gail Randall The Scout Leaders would like to thank Parishioners, friends, parents and also the scouts themselves for donating shoe boxes filled with Christmas treats for children far less fortunate than our own. Over 60 of you carefully chose, filled and even wrapped shoe boxes for Operation Christmas Child. Thanks to you, 60 children somewhere around the world will be smiling this Christmas and will know that we do care. Last year the boxes were distributed to Ukraine, Belarus & Uganda. And once again it is a mix of the inspired and the insipid; the brilliant and the banal. But whether it causes us to sit up or sit back, let’s enjoy the marketing parade of Christmas trimmings and trappings: the food, the gifts, the smiles, the lights, the fairies, the magic & sparkle and even the dodgy jumpers. Let’s also celebrate its recognition of the importance of family and fun and friendship; and that Monty the penguin receives the wonderful gift of company. But amongst it all, let’s also remember that the Bible teaches us the importance of our lives being founded on and pointing to Christ. This is what our campaign urges us to do at Christmas. To remember that the festival celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, and to make sure that our festivities are founded on and point to him. Because everyone will find that Christmas means so much more when it starts with Christ - See more at: http://christmasstartswithchrist.com 21 TIME SERVED Painter & Decorator DECORATING AND HANDYMAN SERVICE Over 12 years’ Experience OAP Discount D. Take a large bowl. Check the whisky again. To be sure it's the highest quality, pour one level cup and drink. Repeat. Turn on the electric mixer, beat one cup of butter in a large fluffy bowl. Add one teaspoon of sugar and beat again. Make sure the whisky is still OK. Cry another tup. Tune up the mixer. Beat two leggs and add to the bowl and chuck in the cup of dried fruit. Mix on the turner. If the fried druit gets stuck in the beaterers, pry it goose with a drewscriver. Sample the whisky to check for tonsisticity. Next, sift two cups of salt. Or something. Who cares? Check the whisky. Now sift the lemon juice. Add one table. Spoon the sugar or something. Whatever you can find. Grease the oven. Turn the cake tin to 350 degrees. Don't forget to beat off the turnerer. Throw the bowl out of the window. Check the whisky again, wipe the counter with the cat and go to bed.
