LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts (LeMoyne) continues to create and grow by leaps and bounds. During the past quarter we have been actively soliciting the support of local elected officials to promote our desire to be a part of the Cascades Park “mixed use structure” slated for construction at the corner of Gaines and Gadsden Streets. Through our presence at Cascades Park, a symbiotic relationship will grow that we believe will benefit everyone. A successful call for artists garnered a harvest of great shows for 2015 and 2016. The line-up will include national, regional and statewide exhibits. We are thrilled to be bringing back a very popular show that will be open to all artists, “Cats”, sponsored by Cat Life. Once again we will fill the entire gallery with felines of all types. So stayed tuned for more details! As part of our 50th Anniversary Celebration, we have been showcasing works from our permanent collection the Director Welcome BrendaAbstein SteveAdams Florence Ashby & Laird Anderson SteveAndrews GayleAvant JohnBabski Marcos & Lynn Barrera Grady & GailBass JennyBates Tom & Betty Beck KarenBerkley DorothyBinger DeniseBishop ChristineBoczarska DebraBoone NoliaBrandt Randy & Debby Brienen DaveBright TriciaBrinkman Randy & Lisa Bristol HeatherBrooks CindyBrown Ron Hoffman & Beverly Brownlow KimBundage 2 MEMBERS DorianBurr Peter & Sally Butzin ShirleyCain SusanCampbell Bill & Cathy Campbell ChrisCanthen ValerieCarnett Riko & Adrienne Carrion DellCates ConnieChen Glenda Rabby & Ted Chiricos Greg & Ann Choppin Ronald J. & Erica R. We are focusing on our four core artists and collaborating with our fellow galleries to share their works with the community. So far this year we highlighted George Milton at LeMoyne, accompanied by the personal pomegranate collection of our very own Dick Puckett. The Council on Culture & Arts (COCA) and the City of Tallahassee displayed works by Nancy Reid Gunn, accompanied by Ron Yrabedra who celebrated his birthday on opening night at the City Hall gallery. In June, we hung our Hiram Williams, “Body of Work”, in 621 Gallery at Railroad Square. Cynthia Hollis and her staff did a beautiful job of hanging the show. Soon Karl Zerbe will be showing at the Museum of Fine Arts at Florida State University. Our seasons are full and our future is bright thanks to the hard work of our board of directors and the generous support of our members. I welcome your input at all times and look forward to seeing all of you during upcoming events at LeMoyne. Dashing from the air conditioned car to the air conditioned office or sprinting to avoid a tropical downpour could be the framework for a new Olympic event. The relentless oppressive heat and soaring humidity create what I refer to as North Florida’s indoor season. Fall, winter, spring and indoor completes my personal meteorological calendar. But it is also a season of stunning beauty in Tallahassee. When I view this season from an artistic perspective, the shades of green are lush and vibrant…….everything green seems to sag and drip in a languid display. Morning skies often begin foggy, followed by brilliant blue and all before the darkening clouds of the afternoon storms roll in. The indigo sky of the approaching storm forms the perfect backdrop for the verdant green landscape. The indoor season for us at LeMoyne is a busy one. Finalizing our 2015 exhibit schedule, planning our annual Holiday Show, and working toward our new Art and Soul event scheduled for early 2016 are just a few of the things keeping us busy and excited. It is also a time we like to recognize and thank our many the volunteers for whom we are indebted for so much of our success. From answering phones to giving tours to grant research to artistic advice, our incredible base of volunteers donates immeasurable time and talent. Fundraisers and event planners, along with public speakers, public relations and education volunteers all create an amazing cultural environment for LeMoyne and our community. We are truly appreciative for all they do! The indoor season, because of summer vacations and family time, can also be a slow period for us financially. As members, you recently received a letter from us reflecting our annual fund campaign. The fund campaign has several levels of financial support and helps us maintain our high caliber exhibits and resources during the slower summer period. We gratefully appreciate your consideration. We at LeMoyne are here to serve you…… our members and the greater Tallahassee community with the finest in visual arts exhibits and education. Please contact us with any questions, suggestions or if you would enjoy an opportunity to volunteer with us. We welcome you! David Campbell Board President LeMoyne Would like to Thank a few of its Sponsors 3 Volunteer Spotlight ing about arts and literature. The art of cooking has always been a part of my life, it is a family hobby and my interest continues to this day. Not to mention, I just love people. Every day you learn something new from your friends and acquaintances…what a gift! TM: When did you hear about LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts? SM: I first heard about LeMoyne when I moved to Tallahassee to work for the state. TM: And what made you start volunteering for LeMoyne? Shirley McFadden This issue of the newsletter, we had the privilege of interviewing one of the hardest working volunteers at LeMoyne, Shirley McFadden. Shirley has been a member of LeMoyne for five years and has gone above and beyond assisting LeMoyne in bringing the arts to the community. Taylore Maxey (TM): Thank you for this interview, Shirley. To start off, can you tell the readers about yourself? Shirley McFadden (SM): Sure, I have a Bachelor’s degree in history from Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. The majority of my 35 year career was with the State of Florida Child Support Enforcement Program; where it was an honor to be a part of a program that significantly improves the lives children by increasing the financial security of families. Also, I personally have an insatiable curiosity for learn4 SM: I always wanted to volunteer in some area of the arts. Although I am not an artist, I so admire the hard work and talent it takes to be successful in a chosen field. The LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts is a wonderful place to view art and meet the artists. I also wanted to broaden my group of friends to include people that share similar interests. Until I retired, I did not believe that I could spend enough time volunteering on a routine basis to make a difference. TM: You definitely make a difference at LeMoyne. Can you tell us about one of the most memorable events you volunteered for with LeMoyne? SM: One year we hosted the Art Show, put on by City of Tallahassee employees. Some of the people had never been to an art venue and had the opportunity to see that the enjoyment of art was not “stuffy” and boring. That was a thrill and makes all the work done by staff and members worthwhile. TM: That is great. Art is meant for all walks of life. As this interview comes to a close, is there anything else you want the readers to know about LeMoyne? SM: If you have not been to LeMoyne recently please come see the exhibits and take some art classes, you will enjoy it! Chelsea Summer Art Camp Summer Art Camp 2014 Art Mixed with Adventure at Summer Art Camp This summer we went on an Animation Adventure during LeMoyne’s Summer Art Camp! Each session we focused on a particular style of animation as we revealed how our beloved characters are brought to life. We discovered what it takes to be SUPER HUMAN, wrote our own fairytale ending through STORYBOOK WONDER, figured out how to go FROM ORDINARY TO EXTRAORDINARY, uncovered the myths buried within FOLKLORE & FANTASY, bravely faced what it takes to find HEROIC ACTION, and created our own REALMS OF ILLUSTRATION. We had a wonderful summer full of fun, creativity, art, and inspiration! Students in LeMoyne’s Teen Foundations Program, led by a remarkable group of talented and experienced artists, created work based off specific artists from Master Classics to Contemporary Explorations. This directed approach allowed the students to not only research and study, but also gave them the opportunity to recreate and redesign these master works. We had two talented groups of students who created some truly inspired works of art. The staff, volunteers, donors, and teachers make LeMoyne SummerArt Camp an exciting and inspiring place for our students. We are truly grateful for all of the effort that went into making this one unforgettable summer of art. Plans for 2015 are already underway; be sure to mark your calendar for what will be a summer of art you won’t want to miss! Until next summer, Jennifer Infinger, Education Coordinator 7 125 N.
