What is A Pediatric Hematologist/ Oncologist? A Pediatric Hematologist/Oncologist diagnoses and manages children and adolescents with cancer and blood disorders. Most pediatric hematology-oncology specialists are involved in caring for and treating patients with a wide range of illnesses. The physician must have completed at least six years of training after medical school. There are only a handful of these specialists in the state of Kansas, with two at the StormontVail Cancer Center in Topeka. In the United States, 60 programs offer fellowship training in Pediatric Hematology/ Oncology. At the Stormont-Vail Cancer Center, these specialists are part of a multidisciplinary team providing support and care to the patient and family. Patients cared for are ages birth to 21 years of age. What is Pediatric Hematology? Pediatric Hematology includes blood disorders of childhood, including: • Genetic hematological disorders: • Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) • Red cell membrane defects (Hereditary spherocytosis) • Red cell enzyme defects (G6PD deficiency) • Bleeding disorders (hemophilia, VWD) • Clotting disorders • Transfusions • Nutritional acquired anemias • Neonatal hematology • Platelet disorders, congenital and acquired • White blood cell disorders, congenital and acquired • Bone marrow failures, congenital and acquired What Types of Services Are Provided? The Pediatric Hematologist/Oncologist can offer you: • Consultation/referrals • Counseling parents and patients with abnormal hemoglobinopathy screen • Support for parents and patients battling childhood cancer Is a Referral Needed? What is Pediatric Oncology? Pediatric Oncology includes consultation and treatment of childhood cancers or conditions: • Acute leukemia • Hodgkin’s and non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma • Embryonal solid tumors (neuroblastoma, retinoblastoma) • Soft tissue and bone cancers • Brain cancer • Benign vascular malformations Patients and families are often referred to a Pediatric Hematologist/Oncologist by their pediatrician or family practice physician. A Multidisciplinary Approach At the Stormont-Vail Cancer Center patients are given care and treatment through a multidisciplinary approach. In addition to the consultation and care provided by the Pediatric Hematologist/ Oncologist, members of the care team may include radiation oncology, pediatric infectious disease specialists, pediatric surgeon/neurosurgeon, and other pediatric subspecialties. Depending on the circumstances, consultation with a certified genetic counselor may also be recommended.
