Harpursville’s State Title Hopes Dashed In Final Minutes As Gananda Beats Hornets, 61-51

TROY - Maybe by the
end of the week, players and
coaches of Harpursville’s
girl’s basketball team will
reflect upon what truly was
an incredible 2010-2011
campaign, it just wasn’t the
time on Sunday afternoon,
as the Lady Hornets bowed
in the NYSPHSAA Class C
championship game, 61-51,
to unbeaten Gananda.
“They’ll understand just
how special this season
was…in time,” a red-eyed
Harpursville H’Ville coach
Kurt Ehrensbeck said.
Those in attendance at the
McDonough Sports Complex
at Hudson Valley Community
College were treated to
what state tourney bigwigs
called the best game of the
tournament, with Gananda
(25-0), ranked #1 in Class C
from the start of the season,
finished off the wire-to-wire
ranking with its first state
title.
“Both teams battled,
(Gananda) just made the last
points,” Ehrensbeck said.
Nerves showed in the
opening quarter, as both clubs
had issues getting into their
respective offenses. It took
2:02 before the first points
were put on the scoreboard,
Savannah Murray finally
lifting the lid off the hoops
with jumper in the lane for
the 2-0 H’Ville lead. The
teams traded the lead three
times in the quarter, Hannah
Kimmel’s three-pointer with
two ticks left on the clock
giving the Lady Hornets an
11-10 entering the second
stanza.
H’Ville has eleven first
quarter turnovers.
“Very uncharacteristic for
us,” Ehrensbeck said.
Gananda took five-point
leads twice in the second
quarter – the second one
coming on Tiffany Gregoire’s
inside hoop with 2:35 left
putting the Panthers up 2419.
But Kimmel led a
comeback,
scoring
on
a turnaround over three
defenders in the low block
then a drilling a long trey
from the top of the arc to
knot things at 24 with 1:46
left. Gregoire’s hoop stopped
the run, but H’Ville grabbed
a 31-28 halftime lead when
Erin Dietzman drained a
three-pointer with 10 seconds
left.
Despite
16
first-half
turnovers,
Harpursville
had the lead, something
Ehrensbeck was more than
happy to take.
“If someone told me earlier
this season we’d be up three
points at halftime of the state
championship game, I’d say
they were crazy. But, we’d
take it,” Ehrensbeck said.
Kimmel was the main
reason H’Ville enjoyed the
halftime advantage, as the
senior put on an offensive
clinic in which she scored
20 points and had five
rebounds.
“She put on a quite a show,”
said Ehrensbeck of Kimmel,
who finished the contest with
32 points before fouling out
with 1:18 to play.
Gananda coach Tony
Morabito knew that his team
had to stop, or at least slow
Kimmel if his group wanted
to win.
(At half), we told the girls
that if somebody’s going
to beat you, it’s going to
be somebody other than
Kimmel,” Morabito said.
“We can’t let her beat us.”
H’Ville had a 42-37 lead
with 4:20 left in third, as
Kimmel scored five straight
points, but Gananda picked
up the intensity on defense,
playing more physical than
perhaps H’Ville was used
to seeing. The Hornets were
held to just two more points
and Shannon McGinnis’s
three-pointer with just under
a minute tied things at 44
entering the final quarter.
“They bellied us up and
played a more physical game.
We had problems adapting,”
Ehrensbeck said.
Kimmel’s two free throws
gave H’Ville a 46-44 lead just
55 seconds into the fourth
quarter, but Melissa Reeves
made one of two free throws
and Julia Pagano used a ball
fake and drive to the hoop
to put Gananda back on top.
McGinnis made a pair of free
throws to put the Panthers up
three with 5:49 to play, but
on H’Ville’s next possession,
Kimmel was fouled shooting
a desperation three-pointer
just before the shot clock
expired. Bailed out, Kimmel
made all three free throws to
tie the game at 49 with 5:19
to play.
Gananda seized control of
the game at this point.
McGinnis, who finished
with 20 points and 15
rebounds and was named the
tournament Most Valuable
Player, drove into the paint
and scored. Kimmel was
fouled on the other end of the
floor, sending her to the line
for a one-and-one. Kimmel
missed the front end, her

will be showcased during a
four-person exhibit starting
March 26 at the Windsor Whip
Works Art Center in Windsor,
NY.
Arthur B. Singer is best
known for his books Birds
of the World, Birds of North
America, and Birds of Europe,
which rank among the foremost
bird guides ever published.
He received the Audubon
Society’s first Hal Borland
Award, and the Augustus St.
Gaudens medal from his alma
mater, The Cooper Union.
Singer’s two sons, Alan and
Paul, have followed in their
father’s footsteps and will also
have paintings in the show.
Alan Singer, who teaches fine
art at the Rochester Institute
of Technology, collaborated
with his father to design and
illustrate a series of awardwinning U.S. postage stamps
featuring the “Birds and
Flowers of the Fifty States.”
Alan’s work has been shown
at The Smithsonian and at the
Norman Rockwell Museum in
Massachusetts. Paul Singer,
a nationally known graphic
designer, resides in Brooklyn
and loves to paint along the
seacoast.
Donna Dodson, a sculptor
from Jamaica Plain, MA,
will round out the show with
her dramatic wood carvings
of female forms inspired
by Egyptian, African, and
Native American art. “My
artwork
celebrates
the
mystical relationship between
human beings and the animal
kingdom…The forms say
something that words could
simply not express. There is
a tremendous challenge in
making a work of art for all
the trials, and progressions
one experiences before the
form will come alive and begin
to resolve itself. Sculpture is
labor and time intensive and
making art is a lifelong study
with lessons for the eye, the
hand, the mind and the spirit.”

An opening reception will
be held at the Windsor Whip
Works Art Center gallery from
6 - 9 pm, March 26. The show
will run through May 7. Gallery

only miss of the game in
six attempts, and Shawna
VanEtten came up with the
loose ball, drove the length
of the floor and hit a pullup jumper for the four-point
lead.
VanEtten then came up
with the biggest play of the
game when she set herself
in front of Kimmel, who was
driving the right sideline after
the Gananda basket. Kimmel
ran into VanEtten just in front
of the scorer’s table. Whistle.
Offensive foul. Kimmel’s
fourth with 3:06 left.
“That was the key to the
game,” Morabito said.
McGinnis scored again in
post area off a Pagano (10
points, four assists) helper
to give the Panthers a 55-49
lead, but Kimmel scored off
a miss with 1:49 left, her
final points in a high school
uniform.
VanEtten’s drive and layup
with 1:35 left put the lead
back to six (57-51) and forced
Harpursville to have to foul.
Unfortunately, Kimmel was
forced to foul at one point,
her fifth, sending her to the
sideline.
VanEtten, who sat much
of the third quarter in foul
trouble, scored all ten of her
points in the fourth, including
four consecutive free throws
in the final 46 seconds, as
Harpursville could only
watch and wonder.
“We’ve worked four days
a week since May, still it was
beyond our dreams to make
the state finals,” Ehrensbeck
said. “We played to our max
– we couldn’t play harder.”
Dietzman scored seven
points and freshman Miranda
Drummond added six for
H’Ville (23-2).
Ehrensbeck said that the
support players completed
this magical season.
“Our auxiliary players got
us here.”
Kimmel and Drummond
were named to the AllTournament
Team
and
Dietzman was awarded the
Sportsmanship Award.
The state tournament
experience is something the
H’Ville kids will relish for
years.
“I told them that 20 years
from now, they will look
back on this as one of the
best moments of their lives,
Ehrensbeck said.
“This was so special
to them,” he added. “The
kids took, I’m not kidding,
about 4,000 pictures the
last three days and watched
Binghamton play Friday
night. They enjoyed the
ride.”
No one enjoyed the ride
any more than Kimmel, a
Sacred Heart-bound senior
who finished the season
as Section Four’s all-time
leading scorer, boy or girl,
with 2,692 points. That total
placed her seventh all-time in
girl’s state history and tenth
overall.
“Hannah’s best basketball
is yet to come,” said
Ehrensbeck, who coached
both her and her older sister,
Lindsay, a Villanova junior.

Getting Digital Photos
Out of the Computer
Some of us only receive
photos of grandkids once a
year -- when school photos
come out. Vacation shots our
computer-savvy friends have
taken sit in our computer
unviewed, as do digital photos
of our grandchildren. The
reason: We don’t know how
to open those files.
No, this isn’t going to be a
lesson in how to retrieve those
photos yourself. But here’s
how you can learn to do it:
Buy a 4mg (pronounced
“four meg”) flash drive at
any store with an electronics
department: Walmart, Radio
Shack and so on. Don’t pay
more than $15. If your senior
center has a class in computers
but hasn’t covered digital
photographs, contact the
instructor and get step-by-step
instructions on how to get the
photos out of your computer
and into the little flash drive.
Tea
(This will no doubt involve
inserting the flash drive into
the appropriate space on
your computer, navigating
to the folder where the file is
and copying it onto the flash
drive.)
From there you take the
flash drive to a photo store.
They can download those files
and create actual photos for
you, or with a little help you
can do it yourself. As a pricing
example, if you want to print
out 4-by-6-inch photos, you
can do it for about 30 cents
each at the Walmart photo lab
kiosk. Or, they’ll help you.
Second best bet is to hire
a trustworthy child geek to
download those photos for
you or put them in a computer
directory and show you how
to get to them.
First best bet: Tell people
you’re fine with handling email, but you can’t view or
print the digital photos they
send. Ask them to send you
actual prints!

DEAR DR. DONOHUE:
About 40 years ago, when I
was in my 30s, I was examined by a famous heart
doctor who went over me
with great care and concluded I had mitral valve
prolapse. He put me on
medicine, which I have
taken to this day. He also
insisted I take antibiotics
before dental work.
That doctor died, and
my new doctor, quite
young, says I don’t have
mitral valve prolapse and
that I don’t need medicine or antibiotics before
dental work. He saw that I
doubted him, so he had me
get an echocardiogram.
It showed no mitral valve
problem. I still wonder
about this. I can’t accept
that my former doctor was
wrong. — J.P.
ANSWER: The mitral
valve regulates blood flow
from the upper left heart
chamber — the left atrium
— to the lower left heart
chamber, the ventricle.
When the ventricle contracts, it pumps blood out
of the heart. Simultaneously
the mitral valve closes to
prevent backflow of blood
into the left atrium. Mitral
valve prolapse means that
the mitral valve balloons
upward into the left atrium
during heart pumping and
might leak blood.

East returned a spade to
dummy’s ace, on which
South discarded a diamond,
and Karn then made the key
play of the jack of diamonds.
East ducked and so did
South, West contributing the
ten. A heart to the king drew
the last trump, and declarer’s
diamonds won the last three
tricks.
When the play is analyzed,
it is found that the spade
finesse, the deuce-of-hearts
play and the jack-of-diamonds finesse were all absolutely essential. Furthermore, the timing also had to
be perfect.
The spade had to be led
at trick five so that trumps
could be initiated from dummy, and the queen had to be
finessed so that the South
hand could not be forced to
ruff later on. Furthermore,
the jack of diamonds had
to be finessed to overcome
the queen and ten with one
stroke.
No defense stops the contract. If West keeps his diamonds, South establishes
the suit by ruffing the third
round in dummy.

Cat Washes Paws
in Water Bowl
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have an 11-yearold black cat, “Andie,”
who uses her litter box and
then right afterward goes
over to her water bowl
and puts her paws into it. I
scold her when she does it,
but it doesn’t help. I have
to change her water several times a day. How can I
get her to stop doing this?
— Betty, via e-mail
DEAR BETTY: Scolding
won’t help, unfortunately,
because Andie either finds
this act to be pleasurable or
a relief from discomfort.
First, there are a few
breeds of cat that actually
like (or at least tolerate)
being around and in water —
including swimming. Andie
might have this trait, or she
might not. She may just like
doing it and has developed
a habit of standing in the
water bowl immediately
after litter box use. If this is
the case, you can try placing a tray or bowl of water
near the litter box and guide
Andie over to that after her
toilet, then empty the water
until the next time. Or, as
soon as Andie gets into her
drinking bowl, gently lift
her out — no scolding —
and take the bowl away for
a while. From there on, pick
up Andie just before she
gets into the bowl, put her
down gently, and feed her a
treat. Do this enough times
and she just may “get it.”
Another issue that’s just as
likely is that Andie’s paws
are uncomfortable after litter box use. Check her paws,
especially between the pads;
are there nicks or irritated
areas? Is litter embedded
between the pads? Whether
you see any problems or
not, try a couple of different litter brands to see if it
makes a difference. Also,
talk to Andie’s vet about her
behavior.

kid. It has polka dots on the
lid, and the inside is filled
with memories. Remember
all those Beatles albums?
Whenever I look at my
record player stashed away
in the back of my closet,
“She Loves You” plays in
my ears, over and over,

If you or your parents don’t
have your own family player
anymore, borrow one from
someone who has one stored
in a basement or attic, or you
might be able to pick one up
at a garage sale. I see them
around, here and there. Then

reputable plumber? —

There are a number
of things you can
and should do when hiring
a plumber for the first time.
Following these steps will
increase your chances of
finding a plumber who will
do the job right and at competitive rates.
—Ask a friend or relative:
If they’ve hired a plumber
who did a good job, they’ll
be glad to recommend him
or her to you.
—Contact two or more
plumbers: Compare the
rate each will charge for the
work, learn exactly what
repairs they will make, and
how long they’ll take to
complete the job. (For small
jobs, some plumbers will
give rates over the phone,
but make sure they then
put their estimates in writing before agreeing to the
work.)
—Always ask for the
plumber’s license: Reputable trade professionals are
licensed by the state, and
you can check the license
number with the state’s professional licensing division,
by phone or on the Internet.
—Don’t be afraid to ask
questions: Find out how

in business, how big or

the menu because you have

of cholesterol, there is good

This Shrimp Scampi with
Tomatoes and Spinach is a
“Diva-style” version of the
traditional dish. It’s a one-pan
meal that can be prepared in
less than 30 minutes.
SHRIMP SCAMPI
WITH TOMATOES
AND SPINACH
Frozen shrimp is the perfect “go to” item for a quick
and nutritious meal and

1/2 (8 ounces) of a 16ounce package
linguine pasta,
cooked and drained
(about 4 cups)
1/2 cup grated Parmesan
cheese
1. Put the shrimp on a
large pie pan or plate and
pat dry completely with a
paper towel. Toss the shrimp
with the olive oil and 1/2
teaspoon salt, pepper and
cayenne pepper. Arrange
shrimp so they lay flat and
are evenly spaced.
2. Heat a large skillet over
medium heat. Add butter to
the skillet. When foaming
subsides, raise heat to high;
carefully invert the plate of
shrimp over the pan so the
shrimp fall into the pan in an
even layer, all at once.
3. Cook the shrimp, without moving them, for 1
minute. Add garlic, turn the
shrimp and cook for 1 minute. Transfer shrimp mixture
to a bowl and set aside.
4. Return skillet to the heat
and add tomatoes, chicken
broth and remaining 1/2
teaspoon of salt and black
pepper to the pan to make a
sauce. Turn heat to high and
bring sauce to a boil, scraping up any browned bits
from the bottom of the pan
with a wooden spoon, until
slightly thickened, about 2
to 3 minutes.
5. Add in the spinach,
lemon juice and zest, and
cook for 3 to 4 minutes or
until spinach wilts slightly.
Add the shrimp, parsley
or basil, and the pasta to
the skillet, and toss to coat.
Portion onto plates and top
with a sprinkle of Parmesan
cheese. Serve immediately.

Funeral Disruptions:
We Need Stronger Laws
It boggles the mind, but ...
a church in Kansas is against
gays, and so they take it out
on parents and families who
are gathered at the funerals of
veterans.
And
the
Supreme
Court votes 8-to-1 to call
those protests and funeral
disruptions “free speech.”
The recent Supreme Court
verdict was the last stop for
a lawsuit that had its origins
in 2006 at the funeral of a
young Marine. The veteran’s
father filed suit against the
church for the disruption
of his son’s funeral and the
accompanying anguish. With
their decision, the Supremes
have given the church a free
hand to continue.
Former President George
Bush signed a law prohibiting
protests within 300 feet of
the entrance of any National
Cemetery. That doesn’t cover
private cemeteries.
Since this is happening
everywhere,
states
are
writing laws, some stronger
than others. At last count,
some 40 states have a law of
some kind against protesting
or disrupting a funeral. They
have varying distances that
protesters have to stay away.
Some call it a misdemeanor,
some a felony.
Now, here’s where you
come in.
There’s thought that the
church’s attorney is set to
challenge the state laws and
try to dismantle them one by
one.
Find out what your state’s
laws are about disrupting
funerals. Is it a misdemeanor
or a felony? What is the
penalty in terms of money and
time in jail? Then, take your
pen in hand and start writing
letters to your state’s members
of congress, or making calls.
Let them know how you feel.
Push for stronger laws: 1,000
feet or more, with a felony for
the first conviction. If enough
of us bombard our senators
and representatives with
mail and calls, they’ll have
to take notice. Make it clear
you want strong laws with no
wiggle room.
Consider: Members of that
church may be coming to
your town, too.

“Tron: Legacy”/“Tron:
The Original Classic” (PG)
— After waiting nearly 30
years, fans of the 1982 Disney sci-fi epic “Tron” finally
get the sequel they’ve been
dying to see. (Oh sure, to
many, “Tron: Legacy” looks
like a two-hour Daft Punk
video, but I’m cool with
that.) The film stars Garrett
Hedlund as Sam Flynn, the
son of a computer genius
(Jeff Bridges) who went
missing decades ago. When
Sam discovers his dad’s
secret workshop, he gets
sucked into a computer program where he must find and
rescue his imprisoned father.
Thankfully, Sam has the help
of Quorra (Olivia Wilde) a
bad-ass, sexycool warrior.
Oh, and the light cycles from
the first film are back. Yeah.
Light cycles, baby.
Disney has really pulled
out all the stops for “Tron:
Legacy”’s home video
release, with a wide variety
of packages. You can buy the
single-disc versions of both
“Legacy” and the original
film, or choose from several
different multi-disc boxed
sets. The five-disc set contains the original film, plus
“Legacy” in Blu-Ray, BluRay 3D and digital copy,

UV Grad Franklin Wins Div. II Wrestling Title

sophomore
Trevor
Franklin became a national
champion when he defeated
Augustana’s Alex Meger,
3-0, Saturday, March 12, in
the 125-pound final of the
NCAA Division II Wrestling
Championships in Kearney,
Neb.
“I’ve been dreaming
about being a national
champion since I joined
the sport, probably before
high school,” Franklin said
in a college press release.
“I’m pretty pumped up; I
can’t even describe how I
feel right now. This is just
awesome.”
Franklin, who won UV’s
first state wrestling title,
scored the first points of
the match with 33 seconds
remaining in the first period
on a takedown on the edge
of the mat. Neither wrestler
scored in the second period,
but after choosing the down
position in the third period,
Franklin took a 3-0 lead on
an escape.
“We knew that Trevor
was capable of this level
of success after his great
freshman season two years
ago and we couldn’t be
more excited to see him
reach his goal,” Upper Iowa
coach Heath Grimm said of
Franklin, who finished the
season with a 27-2 record.
Franklin won four matches
over the weekend, including
one pin. Franklin defeated
Russell Weakley of UNC
Pembroke, 5-2; Ben Sergent
of Findlay, 5-2; and John
McDonald of Newberry by
fall in 6:59.
Upper Iowa, who placed
fourth as a team, has another
area wrestler on its roster.

Harpursville Outruns Haldane In State Semifinals

TROY – Just before the
start of the second half, one
of the three officials whistling
the
Harpursville-Haldane
Class C NYS girl’s basketball
semifinals was stretching out
his legs.
“Wow! I’ve run enough
already, I didn’t think we were
doing a track meet,” he said.
Both teams played uptempo, but the Lady Hornets
played it much better,
advancing to its first state title
game with a 59-41 dismantling
of Haldane Saturday afternoon
at the McDonough Complex
at Hudson Valley Community
College.
Hannah Kimmel scored 25
points, grabbed 15 rebounds,
five steals and four assists,
while freshman Miranda
Drummond added 17 points
and 12 rebounds and senior
Erin Dietzman had nine
points on three 3-pointers for
Harpursville, 22-1.
“I am in shock, so excited,”
said Kimmel. “We just kept
running and we were all
hitting our shots today.”
Up 14-12 after a quarter,
Harpursville put the game
in the books in the second
quarter with a 14-2 start to the
frame.
Kimmel opened the quarter
with a three-pointer from the
top and then, after a Haldane
bucket, grabbed an offensive
rebound and dropped a nifty
mini-hook in over a Haldane
defender that began a streak
of 11 unanswered points for
Harpursville.
Drummond scored a layup
off a Savannah Murray
steal and assist. Kimmel
then had assists on three
straight H’Ville possessions,
feeding Kayleigh Livermore,
Dietzman (3-pointer from the
corner) and Drummond to
push the Hornet led to 28-14
with 3:35 in the quarter.
Liz Milner, Haldane’s
Fordham University-bound
senior, scored eight points in
the final 2:55 of the quarter,
but Harpursville went into
intermission
up
33-22.
Kimmel had 14 points and 11
rebounds and Drummond, 11
points, in the half.
Drummond’s
offense
caught Haldane coach Tyrone
Seawright off-guard.
“(Drummond)
knocked
down shots we didn’t think
she would normally knock
down,” Seawright said. “We
were trying to draw down
and help on Kimmel and then
recover, but we recover fast
enough and they knocked
down a lot of wide-open
shots.”
Harpursville coach Kurt
Ehrensbeck was happy to
have the double-digit lead
entering the second half.
“I said to my assistant
coach, Jerry Kimmel, ‘We just
need to play even (in the third
quarter)’,” said Ehrensbeck.
They looked like a team – to
be honest – that didn’t look
like they could go on a spurt
and score a whole bunch in a
hurry. We can do that because
we have so much speed.”
H’Ville played one-point
better than even in the third
quarter (9-8), as Harpursville
took a 42-30 lead into the
final quarter.
Harpursville raced to the
finish, its speed and athleticism
just too much for Haldane,
winner of 20 Section 1 titles
and five state titles in the
past quarter century. Kimmel
scored seven points in the
final quarter and Dietzman’s
baseline three-pointer gave
H’Ville its biggest lead of the

Both the uphill and the downhill bunker shots provide different challenges, but both
can be addressed to provide an easy solution. For the uphill bunker shot, address
the ball with it forward in your stance and your shoulders tilted more than normal.
You do this with your shoulders in order to hit through the ball without digging too
much sand out as you make your swing on the ball. There can be no denying that
the downhill bunker shot is the more difficult of the two shots. The biggest problem
that the amateur golfer has is getting the ball up quick enough to get it out of the bunker. Your
hands need to be ahead of the ball to create a descending blow. The most important aspect is
that you have to hit the ball with authority to get it out of the bunker rapidly.

Biography:
Kyle Busch joined Hendrick Motorsports in 2003 and
won his first Automobile Club of America race at
Nashville Speedway from the pole position. He followed
that up with a second win at Kentucky Speedway in the
very next outing. That same year he entered seven
Nationwide Series races, earning a runner-up finish at
Lowe’s Motor Speedway in his first start. In late 2004,
Kyle Busch was selected to replace racing veteran and
two-time Cup championship winner Terry Labonte in the
famed No. 5 Kellogg’s Chevrolet. In 2005, Busch
clinched the Cup Rookie of the Year title before the end
of the season. He won his first Cup race at the Sony HD
500 at California Speedway in September 2005. In
2006, Busch qualified for the Chase for the Cup, but
struggled to compete and finished the season in 10th
place. In 2007, Busch competed in the Chase and finished the season in 5th place. Busch had eight victories
in 2008, but struggled in the Chase and finished the season in 10th place. In 2009, Busch had four wins in the
Sprint Cup, but failed to qualify for the Chase for the Cup.
Last year, Busch became the first driver to win all 3
Nascar events in one weekend.

Jennifer Jo Cobb walked away from her car about five minutes
before the start of Saturday's Nationwide Series race in protest
of having to start and park. Rick Russell, who signed Cobb to
drive the first five Nationwide races of the season for 2nd
Chance Motorsports, plans to sue for breach of contract. Start
and park is a term used in NASCAR to describe the practice of
racing teams starting races but pulling the car off the track after just a few laps in order
to collect prize money while avoiding expenses such as replacement tires, engine wear
and tear, and/or hiring a pit crew.
