On Wednesday night April 30, 2014
voters of the town of Northborough sent a very clear message to
town officials by voting no or Article 58.
The vast majority of voters who
had sat through three nights of
Annual Town Meeting voted overwhelmingly against overriding a
recent MA Superior Court decision,
which deemed the range use not
only legal, but also perfectly safe
for the surrounding neighbors.
The genesis of this Article and this
story goes back twenty years, to
1994 when David Brown and his
wife Carmel carefully selected and
purchased a tract of land to build
their house with accompanying
target range in the backyard.
“About 2006, land next to ours
was subdivided for house lots.
Even though our range was clearly
posted, people built homes within
500 feet of our firing line. Some of
those people then complained to
the town because they wanted to
stop us from using our own range.
Thanks to David Brown, GOAL was a distribution center for “No on Article 58” signs.
Once we started distributing them they rapidly spread about town.
A letter to GOAL from David, who is
a life member, told the story.
to construct a small target range
for our own use. We have complied with all the laws. For over 15
years we used our range without
incident. We have tried to be good
neighbors.”
“Carmel and I have lived in Northborough for many years. We are
avid target shooters. We moved
to Northborough in 1994 because
we could buy enough land there What he’s not saying here is that

Despite promises from the town
of Northborough, the land was developed and David found himself
no longer able to use his shooting range on his private property. It should be noted that David

Massachusetts. We are an association of law-abiding citizens who believe in the basic right of firearms ownership for competition, recreation
and self-protection.
GOAL works hard to defend the Constitution and the Bill of Rights against
those in Massachusetts who wish to infringe upon the freedoms guaranteed by our forefathers. The programs sponsored and developed by
Gun Owners’ Action League are supported by competitors, sportsmen,
recreational shooters and law enforcement throughout the state.
We were formed in 1974 to protect the right to keep and bear arms for
lawful purposes in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. We are recognized as the state’s premier gun rights association.

It is likely that pollsters are telling
them that is what the public wants
to hear, it is also likely that the supporters with deep pockets are saying the same thing. Whatever the
answer, it is simply unacceptable.
We lawful gun owners of the Commonwealth are from all walks
of life. We are doctors, lawyers,
union members, construction
workers, brick layers, steel workers, teachers, police officers, firefighters, you name it. We should
not become stepping stones for
politicians seeking higher office. If
nothing else these people should
educate themselves on the abject
failure of control right here in Massachusetts, but that never seems
to matter. In this election year
gun owners should make a concerted effort to reach out to these
candidates and ask them the
tough questions. The real tough
questions should not be focused
on their stance on high capacity mags or one gun a month, but
rather why do they always come
out and attack lawful gun owners when they seek higher office.
Those are the answers we need
to get on record. By the way, we
should not accept any response
that starts with: “I am a supporter
of the Second Amendment, but
…” or the infamous “This proposal
does not infringe on anyone’s Second Amendment rights.” Those
are well rehearsed smoke screens
used to cover their tracks. If they
were supporters of RKBA then why
are they continually bashing the
very organizations that exist to
protect it? During this year’s election cycle let’s get out there and
do what we do best, expose the
lies and deliver the truth.

From the Editor
Is the tide beginning to turn?
Amendment.
Over the last year or so we’ve
seen a major shift change towards
a “more freedom” philosophy
amongst certain segments of Massachusetts voters.
Luckily GOAL caught wind of it,
was able to issue email alerts and
social media alerts and mobilize
the citizens to attend the 3 night
Annual Town Meeting where the
article was soundly defeated. Victory, that’s the Sudbury I know!
This tectonic shift has occurred at
local, town level elections, where,
during the last year, the citizens
of four different towns have overwhelmingly defeated a variety of
anti-freedom proposals.
That’s great news. I’m sure many
of you are thinking “probably
towns out west, beyond the Route
495 corridor”. Well, I’m pleased to
tell you that you would be partially correct in thinking that. Of the
towns involved, only one of them
was west of Route 495, that being
the location of your Gun Owners’
Action League’s state Headquarters, Northborough.
Of the other three, we had one
town on the North Shore (Swampscott) and two in Metro West,
which are, interestingly enough
neighboring towns (Sudbury and
Wayland).
A busy Summer passed and into
the Fall, the town battles began
anew, this time in Swampscott
when a Swampscott selectman,
one Barry Greenfield initiated a
“discussion” about mandatory
home inspections for all residents
who lawfully owned firearms.
GOAL got wind of this early on and
once again got word out through
the usual channels, outrage quickly ensued and almost as quickly
selectman Greenfield started back
pedaling. When Second Amendment supporters flooded his inbox and phone lines with calls he
claimed that he only wanted to
discuss the possibility of implementing something like that. Yah,
sure he did, anyways, once again
we got the word out, citizens took
action and the anti civil rights nonsense was stopped cold.
Attend they did, having to sit
through two long nights before finally getting to the article in question. Once it came up for discussion the overwhelming majority of
residents spoke against the article
and when it came up for a vote it
was resoundingly defeated. Another sweet sweet victory for lady
liberty.
ing a pro liberty message to their
elected officials. I hope that this is
the genesis of a paradigm shift in
Massachusetts, a change in tide,
let liberty wash ashore once again.
“It does not take a majority to prevail... but rather an irate, tireless
minority, keen on setting brushfires of freedom in the minds of
men.”
So here we are, 4 victories in 4

The really interesting thing about

Bettina’s Take
The Massachusetts 27
“There are two potential violators of man’s rights: the criminals
and the government. The great
achievement of the United States
was to draw a distinction between
these two — by forbidding to the
second the legalized version of
the activities of the first.” - Ayn
Rand, “Man’s Rights”
Since the printing of last month’s
GOAL News, former New York
City Mayor Michael Bloomberg
announced that his group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns would be
called Everytown for Gun Safety.
Much like the partnership between Moms Demand Action and
Mayors Against Illegal Guns, Everytown also brings in survivors
of gun violence, individuals who
have lost friends or family to criminal behavior. Everytown clearly
wants to use their anecdotes to
influence legislation. If you went
to any of the hearings last year,
you remember listening to many
of these individuals who all seem
to have rehearsed testimony.
Mr. Bloomberg says, the goal of
this new group is to attack the
NRA. I encourage you to visit the
new website, www.everytown.
org, as it is extremely important
to know how the other side operates.
The most important aspect of the
Everytown website I want you
to look at is the introduction. It
is cleverly presented, clearly Mr.
Bloomberg spent a lot of money
on just this section. You have the
option to scroll through the message or to watch a video.
The beginning is alright. It has
one word that declares their
premise which even we can buy
into. They claim that there is an
epidemic of gun violence. This
may or may not be true, and the
causes of it may need to be further
By: Bettina Romberg
examined, but there is also a fatal
switch in there that is aided by a
gruesome photo meant to play on
readers’ emotions. I will give you
the words, without all the fancy
stuff Mr. Bloomberg paid for here:
“A movement is rising. It takes 1
nation, indivisible, to end gun violence. Moms, teachers, survivors,
gun owners, mayors and leaders
on both sides of the aisle all working to tackle this epidemic. This
is a movement of Americans coming together to stop gun violence
(background picture of gruesome
scars on someone’s abdomen).
Keeping guns out of the wrong
hands and passing common sense
reforms. Together, we’re building
a safer future. Every Mom. Every
child. Every teacher. Every mayor. Every town. Everytown for gun
safety. Join us.”
Did you catch the switch? It is on
the words, “wrong hands,” and
“common sense reforms.” These
are just anti-concepts. I covered
what anti-concepts are in detail
in the GOAL News in April 2014. If
you have read that column, you
can see that they are up to the
same typical tricks.

“Whereas: 30,000 Americans
across the country are killed every
year as a result of gun violence,
destroying families and communities in big cities and small
towns; and Whereas: As mayors,
we are duty-bound to do everything in our power to protect our
residents, especially our children,
from harm and there is no greater
threat to public safety than the
threat of illegal guns; Now, therefore, we resolve to work together
to find innovative new ways to advance the following principles:
Punish to the maximum extent of
the law criminals who possess,
use, and traffic in illegal guns.
Target and hold accountable irresponsible gun dealers who break
the law by knowingly selling guns
to straw purchasers.
Oppose all federal efforts to restrict cities’ rights to access, use,
and share trace data that is so essential to effective enforcement,
or to interfere with the ability of
the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
and Firearms to combat illegal
gun trafficking.
Work to develop and use technologies that aid in the detection and
tracing of illegal guns.
Support all local state and federal
legislation that targets illegal guns
and keeps guns out of the hands
of dangerous people coordinate
legislative, enforcement, and litigation strategies; and share information and best practices.
Invite other cities to join us in this
new national effort.”

May 20th Remembered.
As a writer, I have come to a realization that we hold back from
commentary in critical issue as we
have become almost conditioned
to be Politically Correct. This is
no accident. Our political leaders
have become dependent on our
lack of willingness to challenge
certain social issues, and the main
stream media in this country is
too focused on the latest celebrity
scandal, rather than the news, to
report on the true challenges we
face as a nation.
One of these challenges is that the
First Amendment – the very thing
that affords me the freedom to
write this piece – is under attack in
a slow and insidious manner. The
attack is coming from inside the
country and from element outside
who would have us, as a nation,
silenced and afraid to speak out,
and we are all falling for the politically correct hypnosis routine.
The event that spurred me to write
this piece was the fate of the Seattle based satirical journalist Molly
Norris. Never heard of Ms. Norris?
I’m not really surprised, but bear
with me as we get to her story.
The main threat to our freedoms in
my opinion, and our right to speak
out against the threat, comes from
groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood, the Council on American
Islamic Relations (CAIR) and their
influence over American politicians and the mainstream liberal
media that back their supposed
mission of peace and coexistence.
The Brotherhood, for one, is a
front for the expansion of Islam to
be the dominate doctrine in the
world. Part of that dominance is
their principle of “Civilization Jihad” - a slow and careful imposition of Islam and the controlling
Shariah law that dominates the
religion. Now, it would appear the

Brotherhood and their ilk has so
hoodwinked our media and politicians into the notion that anyone
speaking out against their aims
and goals is “Islamaphobic” – just
irrationally afraid of Islam and a
term they first coined. They have
also conveniently fooled enough
people into thinking that speaking out (AKA speaking the truth) is
blasphemous against Islam.
Let’s pause for a second to take a
look at what blasphemy against
Islam looks like. There is no reference to blasphemy in the Quran,
but rather it is an interpretation by
the clerics and Shariah law enforcing Imam’s who can, basically, determine what blasphemy is in any
given situation. Don’t like what I
just said? Blasphemy! Don’t like
the way a female family member
is dressed? Blasphemy!
Want
to stop people committing blasphemy? Stop them talking about
Islam.
We have become so Politically
Correct in a post 9/11 America that
the government has pressured the
media to censor itself. On Oct. 6,
2001 at its National Convention
in Seattle, the Society of Professional Journalists passed a resolution urging members and fellow
journalists to take steps against
racial profiling in their coverage of
the war on terrorism when dealing
with the issues of Islam in the media. For example, when discussing
terrorists, journalists should strive
for a balance of “moral equivalency” and include white supremacist, radical anti-abortionists and
other groups with a history of such
activity. They should not imply
that kneeling on the floor praying,
listening to Arabic music or reciting from the Quran are peculiar activities. Journalists should avoid
using word combinations such as
“Islamic terrorist” or “Muslim extremist” that are “misleading” be-
cause they link whole religions to
criminal activity.
Be specific, they are told: Alternate choices, depending on context, include “Al Qaeda terrorists”
or, to describe the broad range of
groups involved in Islamic politics,
“political Islamists.” They should
also avoid using terms such as “Jihad” or “Taqiyya” unless they are
certain of their precise meaning
and include the context when they
are used in quotations. The basic meaning of “jihad”, in the politically correct world of self-censored post 9/11 journalism, is to
exert oneself for the good of Islam
and to better oneself, and not the
mass slaughter of non-believers
working in the Twin Towers in New
York. We certainly don’t want the
masses knowing that the practice
of “Taqiyya”, enshrined in Shariah,
encourages Islamists to be deceitful about their true intentions
when dealing with non-believers.
Okay, so what has the issue of blasphemy and Shariah law got to do
with Molly Norris? Well, as a satirical journalist, Molly was trying to
bring a touch of humor to a string
of events that has seen the creators of the cartoon show “South
Park” receive death threats from
aggrieved Muslims at the notion of
the prophet Mohamed being depicted in any way in an episode of
their cartoon show. This story has
a background, so let’s take a look
at the buildup to what would be a
disaster for Molly Norris.
Cast your minds back to the 1980’s
and the book by author Salman
Rushdie “The Satanic Verses”,
which happened to be his fourth
novel (note: novel, not documentary). The book looked at elements
of Mohammed’s life and the nature of his writings. The book was
highly acclaimed in the UK, winning the 1989 Whitbread Award for
fiction and was just edged out for
the Booker prize that same year.
Unfortunately, some elements of
the Muslim world, notable Iran’s
Ayatollah Khomeini, didn’t appreciate the portrayal of Mohammed
in a fictional world and decided
that Rushdie should be put to
death after Khomeini declared a
Fatwa against the author in 1989.
Rushdie was forced to go into hiding after riots, demonstrations
and book burnings in the UK and
beyond supported the call for the
Fatwa against the author. Shabbir
Akhtar, a Cambridge philosophy
graduate called for “a negotiated
compromise” which “would protect Muslim sensibilities against
gratuitous provocation”. The British journalist and author Andy McSmith wrote at the time a rather
though provoking and foreshadowing comment, “We are witnessing, I fear, the birth of a new
and dangerously illiberal “liberal”
orthodoxy designed to accommodate Dr. Akhtar and his fundamentalist friends.”
While Rushdie remains in hiding
and unhurt – the Fatwa was lifted
in 1998, but later put in place again
in 2005 –some of his colleagues
did not fare as well. His Japanese
translator was stabbed to death in
Tokyo in 1991 and, the same year,

individual from overreaching efforts to restrict freedom by government.

companies selling everything from
magazines to grips and everything
in between. Of course those of us
from the oppressed states had to
walk by many products that we
are not allowed to possess. At NRA
President’s reception on Sunday
Magpul sponsored the gathering.
They gave everyone attending
two brand new 30 round AR mags
and tearfully I had to give ours to a
friend from Arizona.
There were all kinds of special
seminars and presentations to
attend. Things like a firearm law
seminar, concealed carry, guns
of the Battle of the Bulge, Men of
D-Day, Survival Preparation, Dog
Training and even Advanced Sausage Making. The Clubs and Associations seminar gave a lot of
information about new NRA programs like 3 gun challenges. If that
was not enough for you there is
always the Annual Meeting of the
Members where all of the officers
of the NRA would give their annual reports and speeches. At the
Lucas Oil Stadium there was NRA
Country Jam with guest speakers Sarah Palin and Lt. Col. Oliver
North along with bands Alabama
and Sara Evans.
Of course for me there were the
countless meetings, lunch and
dinner get togethers with our fellow state association leaders and
other advocates from across the
country. As always, the conversation focused on what we are facing
in our prospective local areas and
what we are doing to protect the
RKBA on the home fronts.
I would urge any gun owners to attend the event at least once. Tens
of thousands of gun owners flock
to it every year and it is refreshing
to be outside an oppressed state
to see that freedom still exists in
this country.

Goal would like to thank the Worcester pistol rifle club for hosting our
progressive carbine course with Scott
Germaine. The class was excellent
and the weather was terrible. We left
the facility better than we found it
and all barrels including indoor and
outdoor barrels were emptied and we
did a hell of a job policing the brass.
It appears that the state police, towns
and firearm record bureau are catching up with licenses as we are hearing
that delays continue to be declining.
Next meeting will be held at Eight
Point Sportsman’s Club on May 16,

In closing, we hope that WP&R Club
members found the Gun Law presentation to be worth their time. I’m honored to share what I know.

NEW BUSINESS - none
A youth deer Hunt is being considered
by Mass wildlife and would take place
on the 4th Saturday after Labor Day.
New hunting opportunities for our
kids to enjoy – stay tuned!
On April 9, 2014 the League attended
and testified on House Bill 3963. This
is an Act authorizing the use of bow
and arrows for Sunday hunting. This
would be archery only of Sundays
during deer season. No one attended
to speak for the opposition.
With the exploding beaver population
in Massachusetts, it is the League’s
firm position that the Division of Fisheries and Wildlife should be managing the beaver and all other wildlife in
the Commonwealth.
Please support House Bill 750 and
write or call you legislators to do the
same.
