Savoie Mont Blanc Tourisme is the Tourist Board for the Savoie
and Haute-Savoie departments. Savoie Mont Blanc covers two third
of the French Alps and is the first ski destination in the world,
with 110 ski resorts and 18 linked ski areas.
A new lift pass is launched this winter giving access to 1,300km
of slopes, five glaciers and almost 400 lifts! The Alpine Legends
covers the 3 Valleys, Paradiski, and Tignes/ Val d’Isère and is available
for six, seven or nine days. The pass costs €340 for six days.

Châtel
Chalet Mustang is a new luxury catered
chalet located at 200m from the Linga cable
car. It has five en-suite bedrooms, all with
balconies, a large lounge and dining room.

is opening a chalet. Chalet Les Ecrins can
sleep up to eight people, in its three en-suite

Courchevel
White 1921 Courchevel is a new 4-star
hotel, located in the heart of the resort. Built
by French architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte,
the hotel has 26 contemporary bedrooms
decorated in a mountain style. Breakfast can

Salon. With its cosy décor, the Petit Salon is

a floor area of 4,000 square meters. It

and leather have been mixed with wood and

New hotels and chalets
Flaine
Maisons & Hotels Sibuet keeps creating more
exciting hotels. After Les Dromonts in Avoriaz,
l’Altapura in Val Thorens, and their four hotels
in Megève, they are launching a new concept
in Flaine, the Terminal Neige - Totem.
Flaine, the highest resort of the Grand Massif,
was built in the 60’s on a virgin site, by the
famous Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer to
his design of a futuristic car-free resort.
The Totem building, located in Flaine Forum
directly next to the Picasso Totem embodies
the architectural style of the resort. The
interiors are designed in an ethnic spirit, with
woven, woollen fabrics inspired by Native
American culture, vintage furniture and a
more urban soul integrating the latest
technology. Terminal Neige – Totem will have
a bar, a restaurant and a small grocery store
(l’Epicerie), a ski shop and a Pure Altitude spa.

Beaufortain
Built in 1781 in the pretty village of
Hauteluce, Chalet Nantailly used to be a
farm which has been transformed into an
eco-friendly accommodation. The chalet has
been renovated by the owner Fabienne
Lehenaff who is passionate about design
and ecology. She has created six beautiful
bedrooms decorated with reclaimed wood,
old furniture and other items which have
been redesigned. The chalet has one
bathroom, two lounges with wood-burning
stoves, a kitchen and a dining room, as well
as three terraces. There is also an outdoor
Nordic bath. Chalet Nantailly can sleep up
to 15 people.

Val Cenis
A new 4-star hotel, Le Saint Charles, will
open in the centre of Val Cenis in December
2015 with 55 bedrooms and 38 apartments.
Le Saint Charles will also have a restaurant
with a terrace on the slopes, a spa, a pool,
a fitness area and an ESF desk to book ski
lessons.

Saint Martin de Belleville
Chalet l’Ecurie is a 130 year old Savoie stable
which has been renovated into a luxurious
mountain retreat. Inspired by the mountains
and local history, the original features have
been complemented with natural materials,

Samoëns
Villa Rose is a beautiful house in the centre
of Samoëns. With 5 bedrooms, it can sleep
up to 12 people. Villa Rose has a cosy lounge
with a wood-burning stove, a veranda, a

private garden and a car park. The rooms
have luxury Italian linen, Egyptian cotton

Val d’Isère
The owners of the beautiful 5-star hotel Le
Blizzard are opening another luxury hotel.
Hotel Village La Mourra has ten suites and
four chalets, each with five to seven
bedrooms. Guests will be able to enjoy a spa
My Blend by Clarins, as well as a pool, steam
room and a sauna.
Renovation
Tignes
Located in the heart of Tignes-le-Lac village,
Le Taos is a new 4-star hotel with 54 suites,
by the Montagnettes group. Inspired by the
Taos village in New Mexico in the American
Rockies, the hotel is decorated in mineral
and smooth sand stones. It has a beautiful
spa, with Nohèm products. Nohèm combines
rare and unique ingredients from around the
world such as Shea and rice. The Taos
restaurant will offer a French and Savoyard
cuisine, as well as some snacks. The Taos
will open on 4 December 2015.

Val Thorens
Val Thorens’ fourth 5-star hotel, Le
Pashmina is a luxury mountain refuge by
Val Thorens’ pioneers and mountain lovers,
the Gorinis. Le Pashmina has 42 bedrooms
and suites, as well as 8 apartments and a
400m2 Spa By l’Occitane. It also has an
Igloo-Pod, a heated, furnished geodesic
dome on the hotel roof that opens out onto
the sky so guests can sleep under the stars.

The Igloo Village at le Dou
du Praz, above Plagne Village,
is very successful and has

This winter, an igloo chapel
is opening in the village –
the perfect place to propose!
Les Arcs
A new 5-star residence, Les Monarques, is
opening on 12 December in the Edenarc
development, located above Les Arcs 1800.
Operated by Odalys, Les Monarques is easily
accessible from Les Arcs 1800 by a new
cable-car, Le Dahu. Edenarc 1800 will then
include a total of two 5-star residences, one
4-star apart-hotel (opened in summer 2015),
as well as shops, restaurants, a kids club and
a 800 square meter leisure centre with a
pool, a Jacuzzi, a sauna, a steam room, and
a fitness centre.
Les Menuires
Made of larch and wood, 4-star residence
Chalet Natalia will combine charms and
authenticity. The 27 apartments will be
decorated in a modern style, with a Savoyard
touch. The ski-in, ski-out residence will open
in December 2015.
Châtel
Four-star Odalys residence Les Fermes de
Châtel will open in December 2015. Made
of three large chalets with 90 apartments,
it also has a well-being centre as well as an
indoor pool.

Samoëns
Les Chalets de Layssia is a new CGH
residence, with traditional Savoyard
architecture. The luxury residence will have

Tignes

Tignes
Mesa Verde is the restaurant of the new
4-star hotel Le Taos in Tignes Le Lac. Like
the hotel, the restaurant’s décor is inspired
by the village of Taos in New Mexico in the

Mesa Verde opens in the evenings only, from
7pm to 10pm, and serves hearty French
cuisine: duck Foie Gras, Savoie ham,
Entrecote… There is also a bar which opens
from noon until 11pm, where skiers can stop
for a snack or a quick lunch during the day,
or a drink accompanied by cheese and cold
meat platters.
Courchevel
Aquadèj: Aquamotion, the new aqua centre
in Courchevel, has several restaurants
serving different types of food, from morning
to evening. Breakfast, healthy food, treats
and afternoon tea can be enjoyed while
taking in panoramic views of the forest and
mountains.

Gastronomic ski-touring tours
To celebrate its 80th birthday, Combloux is
organising a ski-touring tour for foodies,
between 30 January and 5 February. During
the tour, skiers will stop in eight mountain
restaurants to taste eight small portions of
local dishes.

COOKING CONTESTS
Every February, Combloux organises a
food festival, La Semaine de la Gastronomie.
The peak of the week is the Concours de
Farcement. The Farcement is a traditional
local Sunday dish made of grated potatoes,
dried fruits and bacon.

from 31 January to 5 February 2016.
A giant cake
To celebrate its 20th anniversary and the
beginning of the season, Chalet Chinal in

L’ASSIETTE SAUVAGE
Jean Sulpice, who has two Michelin stars for his restaurant in Val Thorens, is publishing
a new book. L’Assiette Sauvage (The Wild Plate) tells the story of what happened
when he met Stéphane Meyer, who specialises in collecting and supplying wild plants;
together, the two nature lovers have combined their knowledge and techniques to
create an incredible range of flavours and fragrances. Carrot tartare and milfoil, salsify
flower tempura, caraway tartiflette, acacia madeleine cakes… the book contains 45
original recipes that anyone can try.
The book is out on 29 October 2015 and costs €45.

Arêches-Beaufort, the mecca of ski
touring, also organises tours for foodies.
From 1 to 15 of April, skiers will be able to
enjoy some tasting, cooking lessons, cooking
shows, etc.
Learn to cook in a grand hotel!
5-star hotel Le Royal Evian, which reopened
last July, is organising cooking lessons with
its chefs for 14, 21, 28 November and 12 and
19 December. Children have their own
cooking lessons on 7 November and 5
December.
Notre-Dame-de-Bellecombe in the Val
d’Arly will organise for the first time a
Concours de Rissoles. Rissoles is a traditional
Savoyard sweet treat. On 21 January, the
winner will be announced and everybody will
be able to enjoy some Rissoles!

In March, Val d’Isère will host the Concours
du Meilleur Macaron Amateur de France, a
contest for anyone who loves making
macaroons.
OTHER NEWS
Opened in 2010, the restaurant le 5 in
the Cœur du Village Hotel & Spa in La Clusaz
has been redeveloped to offer two types of
cuisine. There is now a bistrot and a gastro
restaurant. The gastronomic restaurant will
sit 25 people maximum, and should become
one of the best places to eat in the Aravis.
Starred chef Mickey Bourdillat has left Le
Bistrot in Chamonix to work in the kitchen of
the 5-star Hotel Mont-Blanc, also in Chamonix
and owned by the Taittinger family. Bourdillat
will bring his tasty cooking based on local
products to the Matafan, the restaurant of
this prestigious hotel.
Là-Haut has become the place to be in
Les Menuires. It offers refined cuisine based
on fresh products, in a spacious dining room
or on its sunny terrace. For a quick bite or a
drink, there is a cosy lounge with a fire.

NON-SKIING ACTIVITIES
Ski, swim, eat and play
The MiIIe8 development above Arc 1800
will fully open this winter after opening some
areas last season. This is a completely new
concept rather than just a regular base village
linked to a ski area.
Mille8 is a an activity and entertainment hub,
open at least 12 hours a day with indoor and
outdoor facilities and events and activities
taking place all winter. The outdoor facilities
include a toboggan, a freestyle area, a
secured area for children. The indoor facilities
include a swimming pool, a spa, a play area
for children. Mille8 is opening a new
restaurant called Le Lodge.
Thrilling activities
The Fantasticable in Châtel, a 1,200m-long
zip-wire, at 140m above the ground, will open

Wingjump is a new activity 100% made
in France. Rip’Air is a company based in Savoie
Mont Blanc which makes parapentes. They
have created and developed the wingump, a
fun activity for skiers of all ages. A wingjump
is an aerodynamic jacket that gives skiers the
feeling of flying on the snow.
This new activity will be launched in the ski
area of Praz de Lys Sommand, near Geneva,
on 19 December, and will then be available
there all winter.

Biking
in the winter for the first time. Skiers will be
able to fly over the Plaine de Dranse at high
speed (up to 100km per hour) before carry
on skiing in the Portes du Soleil.
It costs €25 per person.
Several new zip wires are opening in La
Plagne, covering a total distance of 2km. There
are 10 zip wires in total, going from one tree
to another. Six stages are 110m or more above
the ground. Adrenaline addicts will enjoy the
final stage, which includes a 9m jump, similar
to a base jump! It costs €28 per person.
Glide for 1,300m and enjoy one minute and
45 seconds of pure pleasure in breath-taking
panoramic surroundings. From the top of the
Bouchet chairlift in Orelle at 3,230m, Les 3
Vallees’ highest point, over to the crest of Val
Thorens, 3,000m up at the top of the Thorens
Funitel. Suspended from a steel cable and sat
comfortably inside a fabric harness taking you
over 100km per hour, you will feel like a bird.
Access reserved for skiers via the Bouchet chairlift,
on the Orelle ski area. It costs €50 per ride.
If this is not enough for you, try sky diving
in Courchevel! Jump from 5,000m, with an
instructor, for 45 seconds of free fall, followed
by five minutes of tandem flight over a
stunning landscape of snowy mountains.

Launched last winter in a few resorts, the
fat bike will be the new trend of winter
2015/16. The fat bike is a bicycle with oversized tires designed for low ground pressure
to allow riding on soft snow. Fat bikes are
built around frames with wide forks and
stays to accommodate the wide rims
required to fit these tires.
Praz sur Arly and Les Saisies offer
different types of sessions to try riding
a fat bike on the snow. In La Plagne and
Le Grand Bornand, it is an après-ski activity.
Riders can take a gondola at the end of the
day to ride down the slopes.

Several resorts also offer electric
mountain-biking on the snow. In the Val
d’Arly, start at the top with a 360-degree
view of Mont-Blanc and the Aravis range and
ride down 7km of groomed slopes. Riders can
then head to the first bike park on snow in
France, where they can test their balance
and practise their turns. At sunset, they can
go for a last bike ride with headlights.

Aquamotion is a new sport and aqua centre in Courchevel. It is the 22nd aqua
centre to open in Savoie Mont Blanc. Sport enthusiasts will love the swimming
pools, diving area, climbing wall and indoor surfing area. The spectacular surf wave
is the first indoor example of its size in France. In the fun area, you can run, jump,
shout and swim. Take on your friends on the three-lane water slide or stock up on
thrills in the 110m wild water rapids. The wellness area is equipped with a jetstream
pool, a salt-water pool and a bubble pool.
Aquamotion’s architecture is in complete harmony with the environment and enjoys
natural light on all sides thanks to its vast bay windows. The roof, which follows
the form of the land and looks like a vast green wave, is entirely covered with
vegetation. A wood heating system was chosen for all the buildings and pools.
Aquamotion will open early December 2015.

treatments, no more than 40 minutes from
a ski resort.
Evian-les-Bains and Thonon-les-Bains
are just 40 minutes from the Portes du Soleil
ski area (650km of slopes).
In the Tarentaise, La Léchère is a mere
20 minutes from the Grand Domaine ski area
(150km of ski runs).

Courchevel Aventure invites children
aged six and over to learn how to drive a
real snowmobile. The activity takes place
on a specially adapted 700-metre circuit
near the Family Park, at an altitude of 2,000
metres. The concept was tested for the first
time last year, and was an immediate success.
It costs €45 per child for 20 minutes.

The ESF (French Ski School) in SaintGervais Mont-Blanc is launching Freeski+
video courses. The mini riders will be filmed
by the instructors and will learn how to edit
their own videos.
Mickey on the snow
Val Cenis has a new children’s slope with
sculptures of the famous Mickey Mouse and
his friends. Children can learn to turn, slow
down and ski over bumps while having fun.

The BabyPark has a chalet where children

or play when it snows. The BabyPark concept
has been franchised and is now being
exported to Germany, Italy and Norway.

A mini adventure
Learn while
having fun!
Learn about astronomy in Les Arcs every
Tuesday from 6 to 8pm. Children and their
parents can go for a short hike to an observatory
in a hut on the Cabane slope in Les Arcs. A
professional will show them the constellations.
This is a free activity, open to all.
Ski-Cool ski school in Val Thorens offers
the chance to learn a language while skiing
this winter. The bilingual ski instructors will
help you to learn a few words, increase your
familiarity, or hone your expertise in another
language during group lessons. Lessons take
place in French for English speakers and in
English for French speakers. €204 per week
(6 x 3 hours) during school holidays only
(groups limited to eight people).

Alpine French School in Morzine
combines skiing in the morning with the ESF
and French lessons in the afternoon,
followed by activities at night, such as wine
tasting for the adults. Prices start from €889
for a shared self-catered room and €1,100
half-board with a French host family.

Little ones can start learning French in
Les Menuires with the ESF. Piou-Piou,
Sifflote and Blanchot, the three characters
used by the ESF to teach skiing, are now

La Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont Blanc
The 2016 Grande Odyssée Savoie Mont
Blanc starts on 10 January from Les Carroz.
La Grande Odyssée is one of the most
difficult dog sledding races in the world. A
maximum of 25 mushers from a dozen
different countries, compete against each
other for two weeks of racing over 750 km
and more than 25,000m of height difference
in total.The race will go through the Giffre
(Sixt and Morillon), then through Les Gets,
Megève, Savoie Grand Revard to end in
the Haute Maurienne Vanoise. The final is
on 20 January in Termignon.
La Grande Odyssée is a beautiful event to
watch. For each of the nine stages, timetrialed (every two minutes) or mass (in
parallel) starts bring thousands of people
out into the snowy town center streets or
the most beautiful natural sites of the
Savoie Mont Blanc region.

International Ice Sculpting Contest
For the 25th year, Valloire will host this
unique event between 12 and 15 January.
Running over four days, 20 professional
sculptors will work hard to create stunningly
beautiful ice sculptures.

20th Venetian Carnival
Nicknamed the Venice of the French Alps

The Yéti Race
The Yéti Race is a trail running race combined
with some other sports. Team of two people
will have to use orienteering skills, stamina
and determination. The first Yéti race takes

and Val Thorens are open even later!
Festivals and shows
Rock the Pistes is a unique festival in
Europe where concerts are taking place on
the slopes, all over the Portes du Soleil. After
Keziah Jones, the Babyshambles and Shaka
Ponk, the 2016 Rock de Pistes will be hot
too! Don’t miss it, between 13 and 19 March.

The Radio Meuh Circus Festival in La
Clusaz, is a music festival, taking place from
30 March to 3 April. There will 3 live concerts
under a chapiteau de cirque, and DJ’s will
play on the slopes and in the village.

holidays in Les Menuires, holidays makers
and locals can choose who they want to see
for the final concert, by selecting an artist,
among 3 or 4 musicians. The selection is

Same concept in Avoriaz 1800: throughout the season, Avoriaz will be signing up
young groups and DJs over the Internet to
compete against each other every Friday in
a live event on the piste in front of a large
crowd, on two stages in the middle of the
Igloo Village. Electro, rap, pop, rock: every
musical style will be featured. The grand
finale will take place on the weekend of 8
to 10 April 2016.
The line-up will be revealed on with live
updates and social media voting throughout
the season.

The new Mille8 area in Les Arcs will open
on 22 December with a spectacular sound
and light show.
Skiing in April has many great advantages:
it is often cheaper, less busy, sunnier and
warmer which makes it an ideal time to go
with young children, and the days are longer
to enjoy some fun après-ski in the sun! And
moreover, April is now packed with events.
