A comprehensive
range providing a
choice of cut and
chemical protection
that will suit most
applications.
Choosing the right
glove...for the job
The Law
The law requires that employers make a suitable and
sufficient assessment of the risks to health from exposure
to chemical agents at work. This is covered by the Health
and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Control of Substances
Hazardous to Health Regulations 1999 (COSHH).
Neoprene
Neoprene is an extremely versatile synthetic rubber;
it has outstanding physical toughness, offers a high level of
protection against high and low temperatures and is highly
resistant to acids, alkalis and oils.
Neoprene provides a broad spectrum of chemical protection
for a wide range of applications including chemical handling
and transport, cleaning and de-greasing, handling alkalis and
salts, handling oils, acids, caustics and alcohols or handling
speciality chemicals.
New Neoprene Range
The new Neoprene range of gloves is made up of five styles,
designed and manufactured by Arco and suitable for any
industry that requires chemical or cut protection. These gloves
are perfect for many and varied applications and are particularly
suited for use within oil/gas, petrochemicals, automotive,
engineering or renewable industries.
The new gloves are highly sophisticated products.
The outer shell has been specially treated in order to increase
chemical and abrasion resistance. All styles feature seamless
bonded cotton liners to provide high levels of comfort for the
wearer while ensuring the highest levels of hazard protection.
Research with our previous customers demonstrated that
glove wearers found it difficult to determine which glove
was most appropriate for their application; with this in mind
the new Neoprene range features only five styles and all are
multifunctional.
Chemical Resistance of Protective Gloves
Protective gloves are available in a wide range of natural and
synthetic materials: however there is no single glove material
able to provide unlimited resistance to any individual or
combination of chemical agents. There are three ways in which
any protective glove will, at some stage, fail to protect the
wearer from exposure to any chemical agent and these are:
• Permeation – the process by which a chemical agent
migrates through the protective layer at a molecular level;
• Penetration – the bulk flow of a chemical agent through
closures, porous materials, seams and pinholes or other
imperfections in the protective glove
• Degradation –a damaging change in one or more
physical properties of the glove as a result of exposure to
a chemical agent.
Standards
Arco stay informed and are up to date with current EU regulations for hand
protection so you can rest assured you are in safe hands. All gloves in the
new neoprene range have been tested and approved to:
• EN 420:2003 General Requirements for Protective Gloves
This standard is designed to ensure that the gloves themselves do
not harm the wearer and that they are comfortable to wear. Tests and
requirements include procedures to examine the sizing of the glove and its
effect on finger dexterity.
• EN 388:2003 Protective gloves against mechanical risks
This standard is intended to assess a glove’s ability to protect against
mechanical hazards such as cutting. It includes a series of four tests which
measure the glove’s resistance to abrasion, cutting, tearing and puncture.
For each test the glove is given a rating out of 5, as below.

• EN 374:2003 Gloves Giving Protection from Chemicals and
Micro-Organisms
In addition to the requirements of EN 388:2003, the EN 374:2003 standard
specifies requirements and provides test methods for measuring the
glove’s resistance to penetration, taking the form of either an air or a water
leakage test. Another requirement is for the time taken for a hazardous
chemical to breakthrough the glove’s protective material (permeation).

time > 30 min. for at least 3 chemicals from this list: (EJL represent the
code letters for 3 of these chemicals for which the glove obtained > 30 min.

This glove would be best suited to any working
environment where a chemical or liquid barrier is
required, but where there is also a need for dexterity and
fine handling. The glove provides excellent grip in wet
and dry conditions along with a lightweight outer shell.

also approved to:
• EN 407:2004 Protection from Thermal Hazards (heat and or fire)
The standard includes six thermal tests – burning behaviour, contact
heat, convective heat and radiant heat, as well as against small and large
splashes of molten metal.
• EN 421:1994 Protection from Ionising Radiation and
Radioactive Contamination
EN 421:1994 is currently under revision. In addition to reference to the
general standards of EN 420, EN 388 and EN 374, it also includes special
test procedures to measure the effectiveness of the glove at attenuating/
absorbing radiation and its water vapour permeability.
