As part of CLS, participants are required to participate in an in-depth, team
research project. The project will require additional time out-of-class and
participation outside of class. Each team will present their group projects during
the final class meeting.
A graduation banquet is held after the final class session and all graduates will
receive a Community Leadership School certificate.
Schedule
The first CLS session meets Thursday, September 4, 2008.
Subsequent sessions meet on Thursday every week through November 13. The
graduation banquet will be held Thursday evening November 13, 2008.
History
All sessions begin promptly at 7:30 a.m. and conclude at 9:30 a.m.
The Joliet region has enjoyed the benefits of strong voluntary leadership since
its founding in 1852. As the region continues to experience commercial and
residential growth, there is a continuing need to develop an expanding
foundation of leadership. Our future demands the development of skilled,
committed leaders who understand the region’s strengths and needs.
Each session will meet at a different location throughout Joliet as a way to
provide an additional opportunity to become familiar with Joliet’s business
community. Locations will be announced in the confirmation packet provided to
all enrollees.
Patterned after community leadership programs across the country, the Joliet
Region Chamber’s Community Leadership School (CLS) is in its 30th
Year. Each year, the program has grown and changed, seeking to stay abreast of
the latest issues, trends and challenges facing our region.
Mission & Purpose
The mission of the Community Leadership School (CLS) is to help develop
excellence in leadership for our communities.
The CLS is designed to:
•
develop responsible community leadership
•
foster community awareness and involvement among talented individuals
who display leadership or leadership potential
•
develop a shared vision for a better future
•
provide participants an opportunity to develop a valuable network of resources
•
provide opportunities for participants to assume leadership roles and
become involved in the development of solutions to community problems
•
guarantee a strong corps of volunteer leaders for the Joliet region
Participants
Enrollment in the Community Leadership School is open to individuals from all
organizations and professions. The main criterion is a willingness to become
involved in community leadership.
Organizations are encouraged to sponsor promising young executives, new
managers and other individuals who want to make the Joliet area a better place
to live. CLS helps participants gain a broad understanding of the concerns and
activities of governmental bodies, agencies and organizations serving the region.
Sessions
The sessions for the 2008 Community Leadership School are held every
Thursday from 7:30 - 9:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast served at each
session. During this intensive 11-week period, participants will hear from and
interact with a panel of guest speakers from area businesses, government,
education, labor and community-based organizations to discuss a variety of
current events.
In addition to the weekly sessions, students will also participate in a field trip
touring various local and unique points of interest.
Enrollment
Fee: $325 per student for Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry members.
$425 per student for non-members. The fee includes CLS workbooks and one ticket
to the graduation banquet.
The class size is limited to 40 students. Application deadline is Monday, August 18,
2008. Individuals who are interested in attending CLS are encouraged to complete a
Community Leadership School registration form as soon as possible.
