KEMPE CARES
FOR CHILDREN
Together, we are improving the lives of children and
families in Colorado and across the world through
clinical care, advocacy, research and education.
A LETTER FROM JOHN FAUGHT AND DR. DES RUNYAN
The Kempe Foundation and The Kempe Center are working hand-in-hand in partnering with policy
makers, human service agencies, child advocacy groups and nonprofits locally and around the nation
and globe to prevent child abuse and neglect and to treat victims of abuse and neglect.
We bring together leading research and treatment professionals, policy makers and community
members to ensure every child has an opportunity to develop and grow in a safe, healthy, and
nurturing environment.
In addition to continuing the important work under our four CARE pillars – clinical care, advocacy,
research and education – we are a part of a game-changing, paradigm shift in the way we think about,
talk about and treat child abuse and neglect as a public health crisis.
Over the past year, Kempe has taken incredible strides in expanding the scope of Kempe’s work and
broadening the ways in which we can make a difference in the lives of children and families. This work
includes creating and launching the Colorado Child Welfare Training System and rolling out SafeCare
Colorado in partnership with the State of Colorado, completing the Raising Colorado discipline
survey, traveling nationally and abroad to share our expertise with stakeholders and professionals,
hosting several events to advocate and raise money for our mission, and much more.
We are honored to carry on the work of our founder, Dr. C. Henry Kempe. Every dollar we raise can
have a lasting impact on children and families.
Lastly, we want to thank our supporters. Your dedication to the protection and care of children is vital
to our efforts to make a significant difference in the quality of their lives and to invest in their futures.
Sincerely,
John Faught, JD

C LINICAL CARE
Overview
Kempe provides direct care to children suffering from abuse and neglect
through the Child Protection Team and the IMHOFF Behavioral Health
Clinic. Additionally, we partner with local county human services agencies,
child advocacy groups and nonprofits to implement programs aimed at
helping foster youth, families and children.
The Kempe Child Protection Team – Offers comprehensive,
multidisciplinary consultation, assessment, treatment, and referral
services for children and adolescents who may have been physically or
sexually abused or neglected. This is a joint program of The Kempe Center
and Children’s Hospital Colorado.
The Kempe Trauma Program – Gives trauma exposed children access
to the highest quality mental health treatment by providing evidencebased clinical services, training of professionals, and collaborating with the
National Child Traumatic Stress Network to bring expertise from all over
the United States to Colorado families.
The Kempe Fostering Healthy Futures Program – Mentoring fosters
resilience and promotes success for pre-adolescents and teens who have
been placed in foster care following abuse or neglect.
Improving Mental Health Of Families (IMHOFF) Clinic – Offers
comprehensive and extensive mental health clinic services to children
and families and is treating more abused children than ever before to help
break the generational cycle of abuse and neglect.

E DUCATION
Overview
Kempe believes education is at the core of any successful
prevention or treatment program. Over the years, Kempe

child welfare professionals, mandatory reporters, medical
professionals and many more about child abuse and neglect.
This past year, Kempe worked alongside the Colorado
Department of Human Services to train child welfare
professionals across the state about the best ways to intervene
and protect children. Even more, Kempe was selected by
Colorado Department of Human Services to oversee the
