wines TO WATCH
Michel-Schlumberger 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon
La Cime $24.00 ($21.60 case price)
From the winemaker: We have been known for our elegantly balanced cabernet sauvignon for nearly 30 years,
and the 2009 La Cime cabernet sauvignon is a stunning
blend of the finest blocks from our mountain-top and
Benchland vineyards. The deep ruby color shows brilliant
complexity. Rich, concentrated aromas and flavors of
black cherry, black currant, plum and spice. Small amounts
of merlot, petit verdot, cabernet franc and carmene`re further enhance the elegance, structure and complexity of
this wine. This is a new one at the shop, and we are
thrilled to discover such a blockbuster at such a blockbuster price! Drinks like a cab at twice the price.
Alfredo Roca 2011 Pinot Noir $14.99 ($13.49 case price)
We make a point of tasting every value priced pinot that
comes our way, and are usually disappointed. This one is a
winner!! The Roca family has been producing wine in
Mendoza for four generations. At altitudes of 2,300 to
2,600 feet above sea level, Rocas vineyards produce distinct, cool-climate wines of singular quality. This wine has
a deep crimson color, with black cherry fruit aromas, and
light floral, vanilla notes. Ripe, with good spice notes and
medium-bodied on the palate, with delicate plum character and a long, lingering finish. Good for the money!.

Mountain High, Valley Low
There will always be peaks and valleys in the wine
experience, but wonderfully enough, both make great
destinations for magnificent wines.
We made this observation after Jacqui attended several
tastings that lifted her up the hilly landscape of the Collio
Goriziano, to the Dolomites of Veneto and the Apennines
of Piedmont, and dropped her onto the Garden of
France, the Loire Valley. The seminars placed special
emphasis how an understanding of the unique microclimates
and soils of these regions leads to a fuller appreciation of
the wines.
In shop, the Cesari Amarone 2008 Classico $55 and
Corteforte 2003 Amarone Classico Terre di San Zeno $64
offers tastes of Amarone paradise. Other cant-miss Veneto
wines include Pieropan 2010 Soave Classico $18.95, Allegrini
2010 Valpolicella Classico $18.95, Adami Prosecco Brut,
Bosco di Gica $22 and Avissi Prosecco Extra Dry $17.50.

Italy: Lands of Excellence
Vinitalys Simply Italian Great Wines U.S. Tour 2012
featured two excellent seminars, The Fabulous Wines of
Collio and Veneto, Land of Excellence.
The name Collio comes from the Italian word colli hillsides,
and this mountainous region of northeastern Italy is
where some of the best white wines in the world are
produced think ribolla gialla and friulano as primary
varietals. The seminar was facilitated by our good friend
Tom Hyland, who compared the whites in age-worthiness
to fine white burgundies.
We tasted crisp, spectacular, newly released vintages.
Some will make their way to our Top 50 Tasting on June
22, 2013, and Italian whites will flood the shop in summer,
when they are irresistible and inexpensive. Bastianich
2010 Friulano $20 and Vigna Traverso 2009 Ribolla gialla
$27 are recommended in-shop examples.

table at Bacchus. Ruth recently earned her Master

Veneto, site of Vinitaly, produces 20 percent of Italian DOC
wine. Its contrasting zonesAlpine, hill, lower plain and
coastalgive winemakers plenty of room to create. We
tasted classic Soave and Valpolicella, the sparkling Prosecco,
and the prestigious Amarone. This intense red wine is
produced from grapes grown on the hills of Verona, but the
taste is higher stillits heavenly.
Jacqui was invited to a certification seminar of Piedmontese
wines. Piemonte is probably the only region in Italy whose
wines are mostly mono-varietal. Blending is often used to
improve a wine, so mono-varietals are a challenge to the
entire winemaking team throughout the winemaking
process. And in Piemonte, they are masters! We tasted
wines representative of their growing regions, including a

Bobs fireside Wines Get Gift Inspired
Antonin Rodet 2010 Mâcon-Villages ($17.50)
100-percent chardonnay with crisp apples, fresh, grilled
hazelnut, a note of anise with a touch of minerality. Shiny and
clear, green gold with silver-plated gray reflections. Aromas of
toast, white fruits, almonds and fresh honey. This is a great little
wine at a fine price, masquerading as a better white burgundy.
Château Palene Bordeaux 2009 ($15.95)
Assemblage is 60 percent merlot, 30 percent cabernet sauvignon,
10 percent cabernet franc. This vintage produced wines that are
rich, aromatic and balanced. A wonderful introduction to
Bordeaux.

We re-connected with Veronica and Todd Hastings,
principals at H2Vino, and will be working with them to

wines in shop, and showcased several at Bacchus, such as
Domaine Ade`le Rouze´ 2011 Quincy $27, Domaine Ricard
2010 Les Trois Cheˆnes $24.50, and Patrick Coulbois 2011
Pouilly Fume´ Les Cocques $29.

From The Wine Advocate: The 2010 BT Garnacha Tintorera
100% was fermented and aged in stainless steel. Dark ruby red
in color, it displays an alluring perfume of spice box, violets,
blueberry, and black cherry. Surprisingly rich and ripe on the
palate, this pleasure-bent offering has the balance and structure
to drink well for another 4 years. Issue 195, June 2011
Loire Amour
Our favorite seminar was the Loire Valley Wines Trade
Tasting in September. Loire vineyards extend for 300
miles along the river, encompassing several distinct
climates and soils. Here you will find definitive expressions
of Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc. All
the wonderful Loire wines are as French as French can be,
and, compared to other French wines, quite affordable.

Made from a blend of touriga franca, touriga nacional and tinta
roriz. Ruby red in color with violet tones. The nose is dominated
by aromas of strawberries, raspberries, black berries and prunes,
which blend beautifully with secondary aromas from aging in
barrel, such as spices and nuts. Well-balanced acidity, soft and
ripe tannins and a persistent finish result in a very elegant wine.
In shop, these are just some of our favorites:
• Fuso 2010 Barbera Colli Tortonesi $18.95
• Vignetti Massa 2006 Barbera Monleale $35
• Marchesi di Gresy 2010 Moscato DAsti La Serra $17.50
• Andrea Oberto 2010 Dolcetto DAlba $26
• De Forville 2008 Barbaresco $47
• Luigi Einaudi 2005 Barolo Terlo $67
Premier Past & Future
The Wine Sellers will be returning to our favorite
auction, Premiere Napa Valley, in 2013. While there,
we will check on our 2011 purchase, the St. Clement
Vineyards 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Progeny. We
originally noted its tons of black currant, black
plum, lavender and espresso notes with evident tannins, which will integrate and become silkier by bottling. We expect to see it in the shop not long after
our visit.
Celebration
Starts Here

festival 2012:
The People Have
Chosen!
The votes are in, and
everyone was a winner at
Bacchus Fest. Our popular fall tasting was
overflowing with extraordinary wines. Attendees chose their
favorite candidates, and
the biggest hits will stock
our inventory to take us
through the winter holidays.
With so many wines in the running, there are always
a few delightful surprises. The Montevina Terra dOro
Zinfandel Port NV $33 pulled one such upset. We
sold more at Bacchus than the distributor had sold in
a year! Hint: Serving it with chocolate made a difference. The Ramos Pinto 10 Year Tawny $61 was another port, and another hit. The entire book of tasting
notes is available on our website at www.thewinesellersmichigan.com.
