The Gospel this Sunday describes that steward as the steward who keeps vigil until the master returns. The master entrusts his property to the steward and leaves without saying when he returns. What are the expectations? Nothing, except that the steward is given free will to choose and desire what to do with the property entrusted to him. But a faithful and prudent steward uses his free will to do the right. As in the case of the Parable of the Talents, the stewards made more talents from the talents given to them, however, one steward hid the talent. The stewards, who made more talents, were praised and were entrusted more. And the steward who did nothing was punished and the talent was taken away from him and given to the faithful and prudent stewards. Stewardship is also vigilance. Remember, the master left without saying when to return. During the period of waiting for the master’s return, the steward, while making sure that the talents are used well, must be consistent in actions and words and persevering in faith. As in the case of the Parable of the Ten Virgins, the wise virgins filled their lamps with oil and brought with them reserved oil. On the contrary, the foolish virgins did not have extra. When the bridegroom arrived, the foolish virgins were away looking for oil for their lamp. The wise virgins were present when the bridegroom arrived and they joined him at the banquet. When the foolish virgins arrived, the door was closed and they were not admitted. A faithful and prudent steward does not wait for the master’s return by just sitting down; he fixes his gaze towards the master and consistently chooses the good and does the right until he returns. The wait is always the factor that defines the steward’s character. Is he going to be productive during the wait or he is going to be distracted and choose to be lax and neglectful of his free will? o0o The art of waiting. Who likes to wait? Nobody. We do not have enough patience to wait. We like immediate results. It is commonplace today that we like anything quick, thus the culture of fast food, express lanes, drive through, etc. When we arrived last Friday in Gonzaga University for the Steubenville Youth Conference, we arrived a little early before the door opened for checking-in. In the check-in hall, a huge touch screen board was superimposed and flashed different things, which was supposed to grab the attention of those who were waiting so as the wait will be entertaining not boring. The touch screen board also featured an interactive module that encourages the youth to get engaged. I thought that interactive module was successful in engaging the youth to make the wait productive. Even though not a whole lot of youth got hooked, those who did found that the wait has its own value through that board. Why? While they were waiting, the youth who were enticed to engage in the activity on the touch screen board started to know each other and open a possibility of a lot of things like openness, interest, etc. I noticed those youths who were hooked to the activity hesitated to leave. They enjoyed the wait. o0o Since I have opened the topic of the youth conference in Spokane, let me continue talking about it. I thank you all who have generously provided for the trip. Our 11 youth enjoyed meeting people and learn about faith. And the most rewarding is that there are two of our youth who expressed their interest to the vocation of priestly and religious life. Please help me pray for Miguel and Marisol as they discern their vocation. The rest of our youth participants have discovered the beauty of their faith or rediscovered their need for God. Let us pray for them that they may persevere to love God. o0o Let us pray for Fr. Leonard, who is visiting family and his religious community in Tanzania and Kenya. Meanwhile, we will be seeing each other during this time until Fr. Leonard returns. I will be celebrating all the English and Spanish Masses while he is away. Fr. Leonard returns September 9. A Nadie. Prayer Corner Please keep all those who are in the military, or are ill or suffering in your prayers. Parish Spotlight Catholic Daughters of America Formed in 1903, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas is one of the oldest and largest organizations of Catholic women. St. Mary’s Catholic Daughters has many fascists to its organization. Primarily we exist to give to others with many state and national groups designated for contributions during the calendar year. We also have several fund raisers to support our surrounding communities and our parish as well. We have been an active part of the church since 1948. Some of our current members have been with us since 1958. Not to say that we don’t have lots of younger ladies who consistently help out with many of the activities regularly. We welcome all young and (not so young) women who love serving the Lord and helping out with whatever gifts they possess. IE: leadership skills, workers, organizers and prayer warriors. Also, we maintain the Gift Shop, located in the Gathering Space and run by Geri Martin and other volunteers. We have all kinds of books, medals, holy seasons and holiday gifts for the home plus missals and rosaries. We meet the 1st Monday of the month unless it is a holiday and we break in the summer months to give our Mom’s time to be with children home from school. You won’t find another group of gals that serve their church, community and each other that is so much fun and caring. Pray about it and come take a look and perhaps you will find just the right ministry you’ve been looking for. God bless you for your consideration. Para mas información llamar al In conjunction to the celebration of the Natural Family Planning week, here is an article about a Catholic writer’s stand on contraception. This article is a two-part series encouraging our young families to read and reflect and hopefully practice, educate the youth and remind our older parishioners of the Church’s stand on protecting life. The author of the article is David R. Myers, who was previously a journalist until he became an Information Systems Consultant. He is a parishioner at Our Lady’s Maronite Catholic Church in Austin, Texas. The article was published on Catholic 365. Here is the final part. WHY I AM NOT FOR CONTRACEPTION David R. Myers When people are told “no” on something, they feel that they are being restricted from enjoying life. These “rules” keep them from expressing themselves, from finding fulfillment. They are being deprived of happiness and are being “controlled” and manipulated by a Church hierarchy just bent on having power over people. Baloney. Let me address this is in two parts. The first concerns God’s commandments through His Church. Why does God lay down commands? So that we can live our life to the FULLEST as He has designed us to live it. Remember, God is the one who created everything. You know, He just might have a tad bit more understanding of how things should be than His creatures. Secondly – look at what the misuse of sex has given us. Enter artificial contraception, enter a barrier to life, enter a barrier to two persons becoming one through the gift of matrimonial love. Now sex becomes another form of recreation, kind of like a tennis game in bed. Some forms of artificial contraception protect one from social diseases. So a man or woman can commit an act of infidelity to a spouse and no one’s the wiser. No disease, no pregnancy. And so then why not wallow in the lust and selfish pleasure that pornography brings? Use other human beings that you have no relationship with at all simply for your own pleasure. They aren’t persons anymore. They are objects to serve you, the created, and not the Creator. Then uh-oh. Artificial contraception does not work all the time! So you’ve used it and it fails and…well…someone’s going to have a baby. Well let’s pull out the safety net for artificial contraception, known as abortion. Let’s make this innocent human life pay for our mistake. Someone(s) loved us enough to bring us into the world, to sacrifice for us to at least be able to breathe, but we’re not going to pass that on. We’ll snuff out this life and never give it a chance because we don’t want God’s gift of life which is an inconvenience. But the Catholic Church directs couples to use Natural Family Planning, known as NFP. Isn’t that just another form of birth control? No it isn’t. For one thing, artificial contraception has one mindset only: to block life from occurring through the gift of sex. NFP is oriented toward life. Yes, there are times when one abstains from sex, but this is not to be the complete use of NFP. It is a temporary pause in the cycle of life, and it involves abstaining from the sexual act which means God’s gift is not just being used for entertainment alone. By abstaining one honors the gift and the Giver by recognizing the value sex has and by treating it with respect. If a couple marries and uses NFP with the intention of always avoiding pregnancy, then that is a misuse of NFP and the question needs to be raised as to why the couple married in the first place. Marriage was intended to form families through the bringing of new life into the word through a sacramental bond of love. A man and woman become one flesh. And now a final thought. Some people reading this will no doubt consider, even if only in their minds, how over the centuries there have been times when people who did not love each other were forced to marry. New life came forth but not in a bond of mutual love. So doesn’t that make marriage a questionable institution? Let me ask you: Does misuse of something mean that something was not designed for good and intended for good? Of course not. One can misuse anything. But the intention of marriage has always been to bring new life into the world within a sacramental bond of love. Consider. Addendum Here is a short Q&A from Catholics Come Home. The topic talks about our firm belief that the Eucharist is true Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. The question is “Why do Protestants do not believe John 6 when it says that Jesus’ flesh is real food and His blood is real drink?” Catholics Come Home’s response is this: I don‘t know! In Matthew 26, Mark 14, and Luke 22, Jesus says of the bread, “This is my body.” He says of the wine, “This is my blood.” Not “this is symbolic of,” or “this represents,” He says “this IS.” In John 6, He repeats Himself, like He does nowhere else in Scripture, to emphasize the fact that He expects us to eat His flesh and drink His blood and that His flesh is real food and that His blood is real drink. Anyone who says He is speaking symbolically, and not literally, simply is refusing to look at all of the facts. Fact #1: The Jews took him literally, verse 52. Fact #2: His disciples took him literally, verse 60. Fact #3, the Apostles took him literally, verses 67-69. If everyone who heard him speak at the time took Him literally, then my question is: Why does anyone today, 2000 years after the fact, take him symbolically? Also, in verse 51, Jesus says that the bread which He will give for the life of the world is His flesh. When did He give His flesh for the life of the world? On the cross. Was that symbolic? If you think Jesus is speaking symbolically here when He says that we must eat His flesh and drink His blood, then you must also conclude that Jesus’ death on the cross was symbolic…it wasn’t really Jesus hanging up there…it was symbolic flesh and symbolic blood. Jesus is clearly talking about the flesh that He gave for the life of the world…He did that on the cross. Those who believe He is talking symbolically here in John 6, have a real problem when it comes to John 6:51. Did Jesus give His real flesh and blood for the life of the world, or was it only His symbolic flesh and blood? A big thank you to everyone who helped with Vacation Bible School this week. We had almost 60 participants and another 40 youth volunteers willing to "FOLLOW HIM" this week! What a great joy to see such a large youth presence in our church! Thank you also to all those who ran a station, helped with snacks, took attendance, were willing to help wherever needed, or donated to VBS. It was overwhelming to see the amount of food and supplies given toward the success of this program. We are all truly blessed by your caring and generosity! Registration for Religious Education is now open. You can find the forms on the Faith Formation Board in the church or at the parish office. Religious Education is for children from age 3 through 5th grade. Registration is also open for the First Eucharist/First Reconciliation classes. Classes will begin on Sunday, September 25. The cost for First Eucharist is $60. The cost for all other elementary level classes is $30. The works of this ministry are done at your own pace and in your own environment through the creation of a shawl. We will provide you with the tools to get you started as well as teaching anyone that wants to learn to knit or crochet or renew your skills. No effort is too small for our Lord for He truly is waiting to hear our prayers as we dedicate our hands to the blessings of His Kingdom. Prayer Shawl is also an opportunity for those new to our parish and community to meet others in a social environment. Prayer Shawl meets every 2nd and 4th Monday of the month. Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament - The Transfiguration of the Lord "Peter, James and John witnessed the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor. The whole world will witness the glorious transfiguration of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. It will have the exact opposite effect of the bombing of Nagasaki. At the transfiguration of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament, there will be an explosion of divine energy which will release the power of His love and renew the face of the earth. Then the world will see Real Power! All will be made well. All will belong to His Heart. All will be made one. In the meantime, there are five graces we receive each time we visit Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. By His glorious wounds we are the ones who are transfigured and changed through His healing love. Restoration, pontification, transformation, reparation and salvation are the graces being poured out graciously upon us with each holy hour we make. Like Peter….this is why we should exclaim in His Divine Presence, ‘Lord how good it is for us to be here!’ " (from the book 'Letters to A Brother Priest') Please join us for Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Adoration is available in the chapel 24 hours every day. For adoration outside of the 24-hour regular Thursday schedule, call the office for instructions and to enlist. Everyone is welcome. Spend as much or as little time as you can. Thank you for offering our Lord this special hour. Expect God's blessing, and give Him thanks. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Last week’s “Treasure” noted that the official headgear of the pope, the tiara, has been set aside in favor of the miter. Although Pope Paul VI had a coronation in 1963 to begin his ministry as pope, he later gave his tiara away to the Catholics of the United States as a stimulus to end poverty. He took care to say that he was not abolishing the tradition of coronation, but his successor, Pope John Paul I, decided to have an inauguration to begin his tragically short term. His successors have chosen inauguration as well. Pope John Paul II felt that a return to the coronation custom would be inappropriate since the Church was mourning the sudden death of a man already nicknamed “The Laughing Pope.” So the end of coronations came about not because Paul VI gave the crown away. There are more than twenty tiaras on hand at the Vatican. One is used every year to crown the famous statue of St. Peter, whose sandaled foot has been eroded to a bright shine by the hands of millions of pilgrims. Today, it is left to the individual pope to decide whether he will begin his formal reign with a coronation or an inauguration. Pope Benedict chose an inauguration, as did Pope Francis. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
