As presidents of two storied institutions, we welcome you to “A Mirror of Our Culture: Sport and Society in America.” St. Norbert College and the Green Bay Packers are proud to cosponsor this third national conference on sport and society. It is the result of a unique partnership between an NFL team and an institution of higher education, and is being held both on the St. Norbert College campus and at historic Lambeau Field. This is not the only partnership between our two institutions. For more than 50 years, St. Norbert College has hosted the Green Bay Packers’ training camp, making it the longest-standing training camp relationship in the NFL. Sports academics and practitioners from around the country are here to present their papers. The conference also features gallery exhibits and films. Please take some time to look over the program. We welcome you to take full advantage of the conference and to spend some time touring our campus and stadium. We are happy that you are joining us for our third national conference! Thomas Kunkel President, St. Norbert College Mark Murphy President and CEO, Green Bay Packers 22 & Fast Facts A Catholic liberal arts college founded in 1898 by the Norbertine order Residential campus located on 100+ acres beside the Fox River in De Pere, Wisconsin Approximately 2,200 undergraduate and graduate students from 29 states and 18 foreign countries. Student/faculty ratio: 13.8 to 1 Full-time instructional faculty: 137 Percent of faculty with a doctorate, first professional or other terminal degree: 88% Placement: More than 96% of students are employed or attending grad school within nine months of graduation Ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the “Best National Liberal Arts Colleges” St. Norbert College is the only college in the world affiliated with the Norbertine order. As an academic institution, our community is rooted in the Norbertine ideal of communio, which is characterized by mutual esteem, trust, sincerity, faith and responsibility. Communio is lived through open dialogue, communication, consultation and collaboration – the spirit in which we undertake this conference. St. Norbert students learn and grow in an environment of excellence. They enjoy small classes with committed faculty, collaborative research and internship opportunities, and a robust Honors program. They pursue 30 different majors, including communication, education and business administration. They encounter a wealth of opportunities to lead, to learn through service, and to engage in culture and the arts. They are global in perspective, studying in more than 35 countries, and welcoming fellow students from 18. St. Norbert College features 20 men’s and women’s sports teams. In the 2013-14 academic year, the college won conference championships in football, women’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s ice hockey. The men’s ice hockey team won its fourth NCAA Division III title this year, all coming in the past seven years. Named one of 2013’s “Best in the Midwest Colleges” by Princeton Review The Norbertines Named to the John Templeton Foundation Honor Roll for Character-Building Colleges St. Norbert founded the Norbertine order in Prémontré, France, in 1120. The order ultimately became a distinguished community of priest-scholars and teachers who established a long-standing tradition of excellence in education. Today, the Norbertine order consists of a number of abbeys throughout the world including one in De Pere. The Norbertine heritage is the cornerstone on which St. Norbert College was established, and it continues to be reflected in the educational mission of the college today. President: Mr. Thomas Kunkel Motto: docere verbo et exemplo (to teach by word and example) 3 About St. Norbert College Lambeau Field One of the National Football League’s most revered stadiums, Lambeau Field this year is hosting its 58th season of football. A year-round destination venue to be enjoyed by Packers fans in a variety of ways on a daily basis, the NFL stadium underwent a dramatic facelift from 2000 to 2003 that added a host of new amenities and attractions, carrying the glorious tradition and history of the Packers forward in the “like-new” Lambeau Field. Building upon that success, the venerable stadium currently is in the midst of a five-year expansion and renovation (2011-15). Featuring the only true “retro” look in the entire league, Lambeau Field through the redevelopment and recent expansion has maintained its heart – the original seating bowl. The same hallowed ground where many of the NFL’s greatest moments have transpired continues to exist, a setting in which current players will create incredible memories in future years. What was once just a football stadium that fans could use only 10 days during the season is now a Packers cultural center that can be enjoyed throughout the year. Within the five-story Lambeau Field Atrium, located on the stadium’s east side, is the Packers Pro Shop, corporate meeting and event facilities for 25 up to 1,200 people, and the Curly’s Pub restaurant. On game days, fans benefit from many of the same 21st-century amenities typically found in the shiny but sterile newer facilities that have sprouted up across the country in recent years – everything from wider concourses (including a new, upper concourse), to enhanced concession areas, to modernized and increased restroom facilities, to a club level for suite and club seat patrons. The 2003 redevelopment, a $295 million project, was completed on time – and on budget – with the Packers remaining in Green Bay to play all of their games throughout the 32-month process. The current expansion and renovation of Lambeau Field and the Atrium, a $312 million project, includes a new distributed-audio sound system (2011), two new HD video boards and a new Bellin Health Gate on the north end of the stadium (2012), and approximately 7,000 additional seats in the south end zone served by the Shopko Gate (2013). The Atrium phase includes a larger Oneida Nation Gate and new football facilities (2013), a new east gate, revamped Harlan Plaza and Packers Pro Shop (2014), and a new Packers Hall of Fame and restaurant (2015). The project, being completed without public tax money, is designed to improve the fan’s experience. & Thomas Kunkel President, St. Norbert College An eminent journalist, Thomas Kunkel served for eight years as dean of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland before being named to the presidency at St. Norbert in 2008. During his tenure at St. Norbert, he has seen the dedication of the Mulva Library and the construction of a number of significant new building projects on campus. These include Gries Hall, Todd Wehr Hall, Schneider Stadium, the Ariens Family Welcome Center, Michels Commons, the new Cassandra Voss Center for issues of gender and identity and the Gehl-Mulva Science Center (set to open in the summer of 2015). President Kunkel has presided over the introduction of a Master of Liberal Studies program; an MBA program that will admit its first students in August 2015; a partnership with the Medical Colleges of Wisconsin that will see the MCW’s first medical students attending its new facility at St. Norbert in 2015; and the adoption of a new General Education program. Under Kunkel’s leadership, the college continues to move upward in national rankings and its reputation for academic excellence continues to spread. A writer and editor, Kunkel spent much of his early career in newspaper management. While at the University of Maryland, he also served as president of the American Journalism Review and as editor and director of the Project on the State of the American Newspaper. He is the author of five books, including “Genius in Disguise” (1995), the critically acclaimed biography of New Yorker editor Harold Ross. “Enormous Prayers: A Journey into the Priesthood,” an ethnographic portrait of 28 Catholic priests, appeared in 1998. “Letters from the Editor,” an analysis of Ross letters, was published in 2000. A biography of Joseph Mitchell appears shortly. Kunkel was born and raised in Evansville, Ind. He earned his B.A. in political science at the University of Evansville in 1977 and his master’s degree in humanities from UE in 1979. He and his wife, Debra, have four grown daughters. 5 Mark Murphy President and Chief Executive Officer, Green Bay Packers Mark Murphy is in his seventh year as the Packers’ President and CEO. Under Murphy’s guidance, the organization continues to rank as one of the NFL’s premier franchises, with highly successful operations both on and off the field. On the field, the team has compiled a 66-38-1 overall record, made five straight playoff trips, including three consecutive division titles, and earned a victory in Super Bowl XLV. Off the field, the club continues to perform well in its business efforts, which allows the organization to support football operations. The fan experience at Lambeau Field, a top priority for the organization, continues to be ranked among the best in sports. Murphy, who holds a law degree and an MBA in finance, brings a unique range of experience to his role as head of one of the NFL’s flagship franchises, drawing first on a deep understanding and appreciation of the game that comes from an eight-year playing career with the Washington Redskins. He later served a combined 16 years as director of athletics at Colgate University and Northwestern University, and was an assistant executive director of the NFL Players Association and a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, recognizing the broad experience and skills Murphy brings to the NFL as the Packers’ CEO, has appointed him to the NFL’s Management Council Executive Committee, the Competition Committee, and the NFL owners’ Health and Safety Committee. Among Murphy’s first Packers initiatives was the updating of the organization’s strategic plan. Murphy also is directing the organization’s master plan that encompasses Lambeau Field, the Lambeau Field Atrium, the practice facilities, and property the organization owns adjacent to the stadium. Lambeau Field and the Atrium currently are undergoing a $312 million, five-year expansion and renovation. Murphy and his wife, Laurie, have four children. They have been involved in the communities in which they’ve lived, supporting area organizations that include Big Brothers Big Sisters and foster-care services. Mark Murphy also serves on UWGB’s Council of Trustees (co-chairing the school’s most recent capital campaign) and on the advisory board of the Positive Coaching Alliance, an organization created to transform the culture of youth sports. 66 & Emcee Tammy Elliott WBAY Tammy Elliott has been honored with two of broadcasting’s most prestigious awards: the Edward R. Murrow Award and the international Peabody Award. Her reports have earned recognition from the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association, the Milwaukee Press Club and The Associated Press. In 2008, Tammy received national recognition from the International Association of Fire Fighters for an investigation into the death of Green Bay firefighter Arnie Wolff. Elliott has followed the Packers to the Super Bowl, co-hosted with Regis Philbin for a day, spent a week in Rome with New York’s Cardinal Timothy Dolan (then archbishop of Milwaukee). She returned to Italy to report live from Vatican City the week following the death of Pope John Paul II. She has interviewed former first lady Laura Bush, Oprah Winfrey, Brett Favre, Katie Couric and Peter Jennings. Conference Director Keith Sherony St. Norbert College Keith Sherony is a professor of economics at St. Norbert College. During his 30plus years in academia, Sherony has taught various economics courses, including The Economics of Sports, as well as business research methods. His published scholarship has focused on Major League Baseball and considered topics that include game attendance, team revenue and finance, payroll taxes and player development. Sherony has been a regular contributor to the NINE Spring Training Conference on the Historical and Sociological Impact of Baseball, presenting papers on subjects that include the compression of player abilities, players’ salary distribution, performance-enhancing drugs and game scheduling. He earned degrees in economics at Rosary College (B.A., 1974), Southern Illinois University-Carbondale (M.A., 1975), and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (Ph.D., 1982). 7 Exhibit Linedrives & Lipstick: The Untold Story of Women & Baseball In contrast to the general perception of women and baseball as a short-lived phenomenon of the 1940s, America’s national pastime has included women players from the sport’s beginnings in the 1860s. Women’s impact on the game in American society is brought clearly to light in “Linedrives and Lipstick: The Untold Story of Women’s Baseball.” Although American society in general may have looked at women’s involvement in baseball as a curiosity, “Linedrives and Lipstick” brings to life the images of women who loved the crack of the bat and the thrill of a running one-handed catch with two outs in the ninth. Visitors to this show will get to know Jackie Mitchell, who struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in an exhibition game in 1931, and Sophie Kurys of the South Bend Blue Sox, who still holds the record for the most stolen bases in one season in any league – 201 steals in 203 attempts in 1946. “Linedrives and Lipstick” features more than 60 items, including picture postcards, game programs, photographs and posters. The exhibition is toured by ExhibitsUSA, a national program of MidAmerica Arts Alliance. Films Media Coverage & Female Athletes This video documentary focuses on an uncomfortable reality: Forty percent of all sports participants are female, yet women’s sports receive only four percent of all sport media coverage. Moreover, female athletes are much more likely than male athletes to be portrayed in sexually provocative poses. To highlight why this matters and address these disparities, the Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport at the University of Minnesota, in partnership with tptMN, have produced “Media Coverage and Female Athletes,” a groundbreaking documentary that examines the amount and type of coverage given to female athletes. The Tucker Center leads the way in scholarship and advocacy for fair and equitable media coverage of women’s sports. Expert scholars join award-winning coaches and athletes to discuss this timely issue from a variety of perspectives, as they help dispel the common myths that no one is interested in women’s sport, and that “sex sells” women’s sport. Effective strategies are also discussed for increasing media coverage and creating images that reflect the reality of women’s sports participation, and why this is so important. “As this documentary reveals, the need for both is as strong as ever,” says Marie Hardin, professor and associate director of the John Curley Center for Sports Journalism at Pennsylvania State University. “Media Coverage & Female Athletes” is important because it explores the reasons why sportswomen remain sidelined and stereotyped in the media. Better yet, it shows what we can do to bring about changes that reflect the reality of women’s sports participation.” “A League of Their Own” This 1992 American box-office hit tells a fictionalized account of the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. Directed by Penny Marshall, the film stars Geena Davis, Lori Petty,Tom Hanks, Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell. The screenplay was written by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel from a story by Kim Wilson and Kelly Candaele. 8 & D AY 1 : Monday, May 19, 2014 St. Norbert College 10:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Cassandra Voss Center Guest appearances by players from the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League Pre-Registration 3-4 p.m. Walter Theatre Lobby, Abbot Pennings Hall of Fine Arts Welcome and Conference Announcements 4-5 p.m. Michels Commons Ballroom Introduction of sports exhibit: John Kovach, curator Guest appearances by players from the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League Emcee: “Home Base” Tammy Elliott, News Anchor, WBAY-TV2 All-American Girls Events are open to all conference participants. • 10:30-11:30 a.m., All-American Girls panel • 1:30-2:30 p.m., Open house with All-American Girls (free and open to the public) • 4:30-5:30 p.m., Greater Green Bay Little Leaguers meet the All-American Girls Concurrent Sessions I 10:30-11:45 a.m. F.K. Evening Keynote Speaker Ann “Muffet” McGraw Head Women’s Basketball Coach, University of Notre Dame Ann “Muffet” McGraw has just finished her 27th season (32nd overall) as head women’s basketball coach at the University of Notre Dame – a season that included a trip to the national championship game. Her program is known for consistency and excellence. In July 2012, the veteran head coach signed a landmark 10-year contract extension (believed to be among the longest contract agreements in NCAA women’s basketball history) that will keep her patrolling the Fighting Irish sidelines through the 2021-22 campaign. Under McGraw, the Fighting Irish have made four trips to the NCAA Division I national championship game. McGraw led Notre Dame to the 2001 national championship by beating Purdue in the title game. She is one of just three active Division I coaches (and seven all-time) who can boast at least three appearances in the NCAA national championship game. McGraw has 21 NCAA tournament appearances, including a current string of 19 consecutive tournament berths (the sixth-longest active run and eighth-longest streak at any time in NCAA tournament history). During this current streak (19962014), Notre Dame has won at least one NCAA postseason game 17 times. Six-time conference Coach of the Year, collecting her first ACC Coach of the Year trophy in 2014, McGraw has earned top coaching honors in five other conferences during her career: the East Coast (1983), North Star (1988), Midwestern Collegiate/ Horizon League (1991) and Big East (2001, 2013) conferences. On June 11, 2011, McGraw became the first representative of Notre Dame to be inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. McGraw and her husband, Matt, celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary in 2013 and make their home in Granger, Ind. They have one son. WEDNESDAY, MAY 21, 9 A.M. Wrigley, then owner of the Chicago Cubs, grasped the idea of organizing women’s softball to fill major league ballparks. He established his own professional league in war production cities near Chicago to provide baseball entertainment for war workers. Although softball’s underhand pitching was used initially, the remaining game rules instituted were those of Major League Baseball. After World War II, the league grew from four teams to 10; overhand pitching was instituted in 1948; and the league continued to flourish into the 1950s. In the fall of 1980, the players began reconnecting and held their first national reunion in Chicago in July 1982. The AAGPBL Players Association was incorporated in the fall of 1987; the players obtained recognition by the Baseball Hall of Fame in the fall of 1988; and Penny Marshall’s film about the league was released in July 1992. Last year’s national reunion in Chicago marks the 70th anniversary of the beginning of “a league of their own.” St. Norbert College is profoundly honored to be able to welcome surviving members of the league to A Mirror of Our Culture: Sport & Society in America. • 10:30-11:30 a.m., All-American Girls Panel • 1:30-2:30 p.m., Open House with the All-American Girls • 4:30-5:30 p.m., Greater Green Bay Little Leaguers meet the All-American Girls & Supporting Sponsors We are grateful to the following organizations who have provided financial support for the conference: The Center for Ethical Youth Coaching (CEYC) is dedicated to promoting ethical coaching principles in youth sports and, as a result, creating a fun, safe and beneficial environment for youth athletes.
