As presidents of two storied institutions, we welcome you to “A Mirror of Our Culture: Sport and Society in America.” St. Norbert College and the Green Bay Packers are proud to cosponsor this second national conference on sport and society. It is the result of a unique partnership between an NFL team and an institution of higher education, and is being held both on the St. Norbert College campus and at historic Lambeau Field. This is not the only partnership between our two institutions. For more than 50 years, St. Norbert College has hosted the Green Bay Packers training camp, making it the longest-standing training camp relationship in the NFL. Sports academics and practitioners from around the country are here to present their papers. The conference also features gallery exhibits and films. Please take some time to look over the program. We welcome you to take full advantage of the conference and to spend some time touring our campus and stadium. We are happy that you are joining us for our second national conference! Thomas Kunkel President, St. Norbert College Mark Murphy President and CEO, Green Bay Packers 2 & Fast Facts A Catholic liberal arts college founded in 1898 by the Norbertine order Residential campus located on 100+ acres beside the Fox River in De Pere, Wis. Approximately 2,200 undergraduate and graduate students from 26 states and 35 foreign countries. Student/faculty ratio: 14.1 to 1 Full-time instructional faculty: 139 Percent of faculty with a doctorate, first professional or other terminal degree: 87% Placement: More than 91% of students are employed or attending grad school within 9 months of graduation Named one of “America’s Top 100 Colleges” by Forbes Magazine for 2011 Named to the John Templeton Foundation Templeton Honor Roll for Character-Building Colleges Ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the “Best National Liberal Arts Colleges” President: Mr. Thomas Kunkel Motto: “Docere Verbo et Exemplo” (To Teach by Word and Example) 3 About St. Norbert College Lambeau Field St. Norbert College is the only college in the world affiliated with the Norbertine order. One of the National Football League’s most revered stadiums this year begins its 56th season. Lambeau Field is the league’s longest continuously occupied stadium – 10 years more than the next-closest, Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. In pro sports, only Fenway Park (Boston Red Sox) and Wrigley Field (Chicago Cubs) have been used longer. As an academic institution, our community is rooted in the Norbertine ideal of communio, which is characterized by mutual esteem, trust, sincerity, faith and responsibility. Communio is lived through open dialogue, communication, consultation and collaboration – the spirit in which we undertake this conference. St. Norbert students learn and grow in an environment of excellence. They enjoy small classes with committed faculty, collaborative research and internship opportunities, and a robust Honors program. They pursue thirty different majors, including communication, education and business administration. They encounter a wealth of opportunities to lead, to learn through service, and to engage in culture and the arts. They are global in perspective, studying in over 35 countries, and welcoming fellow students from over 30. St. Norbert College features 21 men’s and women’s sports teams. In the 2010-2011 academic year, the college won conference championships in men’s and women’s basketball, women’s hockey and volleyball and men’s ice hockey. The men’s ice hockey team won its second consecutive NCAA Division III title. The Norbertines St. Norbert founded the Norbertine order in Prémontré, France, in 1120. The order ultimately became a distinguished community of priest-scholars and teachers who established a long-standing tradition of excellence in education. Today, the Norbertine order consists of a number of abbeys throughout the world including one in De Pere. The Norbertine heritage is the cornerstone on which St. Norbert College was established, and it continues to be reflected in the educational mission of the college today. Vice president Richard Nixon and NFL commissioner Bert Bell attended the dedication of what was then known as City Stadium on Sept. 29, 1957. The Packers beat the Chicago Bears, 21-17. The facility was renamed Lambeau Field after E.L. “Curly” Lambeau, the Packers’ founder and first coach, died in 1965. Originally built for $960,000 (a cost shared equally by the Packers Corporation and the city of Green Bay), there have been eight seating additions that increased capacity from 32,150 to 73,142. The most recent addition was part of a dramatic facelift that added amenities and attractions and turned Lambeau Field into a year-round destination. The $295 million redevelopment was financed jointly by the city of Green Bay, county taxpayers, the Packers and the NFL. It was rededicated on Sept. 7, 2003, at a game against longtime rival Minnesota. The renovation saved the original seating bowl and bench seats. Additions included the five-story Lambeau Field Atrium, the Packers Hall of Fame, restaurants and two 14-foot-tall bronze statues of Curly Lambeau and coach Vince Lombardi. Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame Fans can see, touch and feel more than 80 years of team history in the 25,000-square-foot Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame. Exhibits include four Super Bowl trophies, a re-creation of Vince Lombardi’s office, countless videos and a huge children’s area that lets little fans know what it’s like to be a Packer by putting on a uniform, throwing passes, kicking field goals and more. 4 & Thomas Kunkel Mark Murphy Thomas Kunkel became president of St. Norbert College in July 2008. Prior to becoming St. Norbert’s seventh president, Kunkel served eight years as dean of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland. He also was president of American Journalism Review, the college’s national magazine. Before that, Kunkel was director of Maryland’s Knight Center for Specialized Journalism. When Mark Murphy became the Green Bay Packers’ 10th president and CEO in January 2008, he came with a well-rounded background that includes a law degree, an M.B.A. in finance, eight years’ experience as an NFL player, 16 years as director of athletics at two universities, and three years as a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice. Kunkel became the youngest top editor in Knight-Ridder history at age 29 when he was named executive editor of the Columbus (Ga.) Ledger-Enquirer. He also worked for the Miami Herald, the New York Times, the Cincinnati Post and the San Jose Mercury News, and was editor and publisher of Arizona Trend magazine. Since then, Murphy has restructured the Packers’ management, an approach that included creating a senior leadership staff and developing the new Ray Nitschke Field. President, St. Norbert College Kunkel has written or edited five books, including “Genius in Disguise,” the critically praised biography of New Yorker editor Harold Ross; “Enormous Prayers: A Journey into the Priesthood,” an ethnographic portrait of 28 Catholic priests; and “Letters from the Editor,” a compilation and analysis of letters by Ross. As editor and director of the Project on the State of the American Newspaper, Kunkel worked for two years with Gene Roberts on an in-depth examination of the newspaper industry, which he updated into a two-volume anthology. Kunkel chaired the national committee of the Accrediting Council for Education in Journalism and Mass Communications, and in 2007-08 was president of the Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication. He has chaired accreditation reviews of such nationally prominent journalism programs as Columbia, Syracuse, Berkeley, Florida and Southern California. The Scripps Howard Foundation named him Journalism Administrator of the Year in 2006. Kunkel was born and raised in Evansville, Ind. He has bachelor’s (political science) and master’s (humanities) degrees from the University of Evansville. He and his wife, Debra, have four grown daughters. President and Chief Executive Officer, Green Bay Packers Murphy serves on the NFL’s Management Council Executive Committee, the owners’ team that negotiated with the NFL Players Association for the most recent collective-bargaining agreement. As director of athletics at Northwestern University (2003-08), Murphy oversaw a 19-sport program that won eight individual national championships and three NCAA team titles. The football team played in two bowl games after appearing in just four prior bowl games. Northwestern’s NCAA graduation success rate was 98 percent, tied for best in the nation with Notre Dame and Navy according to October 2007 data. While he was director of athletics at his alma mater, Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y. (1992-2003), the football program went from 0-11 in 1995 to three consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs. Murphy, an All-Pro safety for the Washington Redskins, was named one of the team’s 70 Greatest Players and to its 50th Anniversary Team. As a player, he was assistant executive director of the NFL Players Association and hosted a weekly radio show. He also was a sports commentator for National Public Radio (1983-92) and the Anheuser-Busch Radio Network (1986-88). Murphy is involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters, is on the board of directors of the Positive Coaching Alliance and actively supports foster-care services in Brown County. He and his wife, Laurie, have four children. 5 6 & Conference Host and Welcome Address Wayne Larrivee “Voice of the Packers” on the Packers Radio Network Wayne Larrivee has just finished his 13th season as the “Voice of the Packers” on the Packers Radio Network. In “Not Just a Game,” the powerful 2010 documentary based on his bestselling book “The People’s History of Sports in the United States,” Zirin argues that far from providing merely escapist entertainment, American sports have long been at the center of some of the major political debates and struggles of our time. 8 & D AY 2 : Wednesday, May 23, 2012 St. Norbert College SPORTS BUSINESS Session Chair: Keith Sherony, Visiting Professor of Bemis 20AB Economics, St. Norbert College MetaSWOT: A Strategic Planning Tool for Sports Teams ~ Morning Events ~ Ravikant Agarwal, Paul Bursik, Wolfgang Grassl and Joy Pahl, St. Norbert College Registration and Coffee A National Event-Ticket Law? 8-9 a.m. Walter Theatre Lobby, Abbot Pennings Hall of Fine Arts Welcome and Introductions 9-9:15 a.m. Walter Theatre, Abbot Pennings Hall of Fine Arts Emcee: Wayne Larrivee, “Voice of the Packers” on the Packers Radio Network Co-hosts: Thomas Kunkel, President, St. Norbert College Mark Murphy, President and CEO, Green Bay Packers Opening Address 9:15-10:15 a.m. Walter Theatre, Abbot Pennings Hall of Fine Arts “Major League Baseball in the 21st Century” Speaker: Concurrent Sessions I 10:30-11:45 a.m. F.K. Sports Panel: “Life After Pro Football: Perspectives and Transition” Moderated by Wayne Larrivee Presenter Bios THURSDAY, MAY 24, 10:30 A.M. Sports Panel: “Resurrecting a Downtrodden Team: The Green Bay Packers From Post-Lombardi Famine to Model NFL Franchise” Moderator Cliff Christl Sports Writer and Author Drafted by Seattle, Ahman Green was traded to Green Bay in 2000. Through a combination of power and breakaway speed, he soon established himself as one of the game’s elite backs. From 2000 to 2004, the former Nebraska Cornhusker gained more yards from scrimmage (9,036) and rushing yards (6,848) than any player in the NFL. In 2003, he set the Packers franchise record by rushing for 1,883 yards. Sports Panel Featured Panelist Cliff Christl is a national award-winning newspaper sportswriter, author and one of 44 members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame selection committee. He serves on the Packers Hall of Fame selection committee and in the halls of fame of both the Wisconsin basketball and football coaches associations. Green left Green Bay after the 2006 season and signed with the Houston Texans. He returned to the Packers in 2009, and on November 8 broke the Packers all-time rushing record held by the great Jim Taylor. Green amassed 8,322 rushing yards in eight seasons with the Packers. He retired from the NFL as a Green Bay Packer in 2011. Christl has authored or co-authored books on bicycling in Wisconsin, the Packers-Bears rivalry, Lambeau Field, the pro football draft and the Packers’ training camp at St. Norbert College during the Lombardi years. He and his family reside in De Pere. Ahman Green Ron Wolf was hired in 1991 with a mandate to rescue the NFL’s most storied franchise from nearly a quarter-century of mediocrity. Retired Running Back and All-Time Leading Rusher for the Green Bay Packers Bryce Paup is a former NFL linebacker and defensive end, who played professionally for the Green Bay Packers (1990–1994), the Buffalo Bills (1995–1997), the Jacksonville Jaguars (1998–1999) and the Minnesota Vikings (2000-2001). Paup, who grew up on a farm in Scranton, Iowa, had to balance the work he was expected to do on the farm with his deep desire to play football. After playing for his high school, he played collegiately at the University of Northern Iowa, and was selected by the Packers in the 6th round of the 1990 NFL Draft. He was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year by the Associated Press in 1995 as a linebacker for the Buffalo Bills and was a four-time Pro Bowl selection. Sports Panel Featured Panelist Bryce Paup Former Green Bay Packers Linebacker and Defensive End In 2007, Bryce became the head coach of the Southwest Trojans football team in the Green Bay area. Though Paup had some successful seasons, many mistakes and frustrations taught him, firsthand, the importance of serving the young men he coaches. In 2011, Bryce and his coaching staff introduced a new Character Leadership Program; this program had a profound effect on the Trojans, and at the end of their season they celebrated a 10-3 record. They made it to the Level 4 playoffs, where they ended their postseason as semifinals runners-up. Bryce and his wife, Denise, now have one son, Alex, off to college and five other children at home: Nathan, Rachel, Hailey, and a set of twins, Paige and Lauren. Sports Panel Featured Panelist Ron Wolf Former Green Bay Packers General Manager Upon his arrival, Wolf declared: “I was brought here to win.” He immediately began fulfilling that mission by hiring Mike Holmgren as head coach, then trading for an unproven quarterback named Brett Favre. During Wolf ’s tenure, the Packers had the league’s second-best winning percentage (.639). They enjoyed nine winning seasons and seven playoff appearances in 10 years, highlighted by their Super Bowl XXXI win. Wolf retired following the 2000 season, leaving the franchise in the able hands of GM Ted Thompson and others Wolf hired for their first jobs in pro football administration. He began his NFL career in 1963 with the Oakland Raiders, where his personnel contributions helped lead the Raiders to Super Bowl XI in 1976. Ron and his wife, Edie, live in De Pere. They have five children; son Eliot is the Packers’ assistant director of player personnel. 15 Bob Harlan is enjoying his “second career” with the Packers as chairman emeritus, having retired Jan. 28, 2008, after 37 years with the organization. Sports Panel Featured Panelist Bob Harlan Chairman Emeritus of the Green Bay Packers Off the field, the crowning achievement of his tenure was the $295 million redevelopment of Lambeau Field – central to assuring the team’s financial survival for the next generation. On the field, his Packers posted the league’s best overall record, 152-88, from 1993-2007, and returned the Lombardi Trophy to Green Bay with a victory in Super Bowl XXXI. In addition to his work on behalf of the Packers, Harlan currently serves on the board of directors for a number of community organizations and has received numerous local and state honors. In 2007, he penned his autobiography, “Green and Golden Moments: Bob Harlan and the Green Bay Packers.” Bob and his wife, Madeline, have three sons, Kevin, Bryan and Michael, and four grandchildren. 16 & Supporting Sponsors We are grateful to the following organizations who have provided financial support for the conference: The Center for Ethical Youth Coaching (CEYC) is dedicated to promoting ethical coaching principles in youth sports and, as a result, creating a fun, safe and beneficial environment for youth athletes.
