Custom Propane Cylinder Decals Make Sure You Meet All New Requirements for the GLOBAL HARMONIZATION SYSTEM OSHA has adopted new hazardous chemical labeling requirements as part of its recent revision of the Hazard Communication Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1200 (HCS), bringing it into alignment with the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). The revised HCS changes the existing Hazard Communication Standard (HCS/HazCom 1994) from a performance-based standard to one that has more structured chemical labeling requirements. These labels meet all the new requirements set forth. See Inside Teeco’s 70th Anniversary & Open House . ........... Page 1 Bob’s Corner ...................................................... By Bob Bailey President Teeco Products, Inc. President Bob Bailey Vice President of Administration & CFO Gary Childress Happy New Year!!!! It looks like we are going to have a winter out West. The snow has been falling in the Sierras and we’ve had many mornings below freezing. What a difference a year makes. Thank you Mr. El Nino. Speaking of the year, I hope everyone had a prosperous 2015, because 2016 looks to be a busy year. Teeco will be celebrating its 70th anniversary. To honor this anniversary, each edition of our Teeco Topics will cover a portion of our history, and in October we will be having our Open House in Sacramento to culminate the celebration. We will keep everyone posted on the date. It is a big thank you to all our employees and customers for their support through the years to make this 70 year anniversary possible. Unfortunately we recently lost a couple of individuals who were true supporters of ours and of the propane industry as a whole; Bob Page, our Rocky Mountain Regional Sales Manager before his retirement, and Maskey Heath, owner of Pacific Propane in Monterey County, California. Both of these individuals were truly characters. They were like onions; you had to peel back a couple of layers to get to the good part. I was truly blessed to work with both of them and to be able to call them my friends. I hope you all will join me in offering your condolences to their families. To end my comments on a happier note, I hope you all will also join me in welcoming Dee Lewis to our Teeco family. She will be the friendly voice you hear at our Auburn, Washington branch. And thus the birth of Tilden Engineering and Equipment Company (TEECO). When you start digging through the archives, you never know quite what you’ll find. But that’s exactly what we’re doing this year as we celebrate Teeco’s 70th year in the LP-Gas Industry. Among the old photos, catalogs and industry articles were countless letters (actual letters typed on an actual typewriter, signed by hand) from customers, vendors and even competitors, sincerely expressing their best wishes for Teeco after hearing about the devastating fire at our Anaheim, California location in 1972. (see photo below) This follows the true spirit of our tight-knit industry, as we see time and time again. Unfortunately, much of Teeco’s earliest archived history was lost in that fire. However, we look forward to sharing many other highlights and special Teeco moments from our rich history with you throughout the year. We hope you’ll enjoy this blast into the past as much as we do, and we hope you’ll share some of your favorite Teeco memories with us! Please send your Teeco memories; stories, anecdotes, photos, etc. to: Teeco Products, Inc. | Attn: Mary | 16881 Armstrong Avenue | Irvine, CA 92606 Fax: 949-474-8663 or Email: [email protected] The very first edition of Teeco’s newsletter, printed in August 1968, featuring a photo of our founder, Ben Tilden, and the “new” C-Level gauges from Rochester, complete with our sombrero donning Teeco mascot from back in the day. The above photo was part of an article in the June 1971 issue of Butane Propane News, celebrating some of the early LP-Gas Industry greats. Ben Tilden, Teeco’s founder, featured on the cover of the July 1960 edition of the Gas Lite The night of the Teeco fire in July 1972. Letter (above) sent to Teeco’s customers, vendors and industry friends informing them of the fire. Page 3 Remembering Bob Page Recently, Teeco lost one of our family members. Bob Page, retired Rocky Mountain Area Regional Sales Manager for Teeco, passed away at his home, surrounded by his family, on October 5th. He had learned he had cancer in January 2015 and in true Bob spirit, he fought hard, remained strong and kept his sense of humor throughout. But Bob wouldn’t want us to dwell on his illness. He made the decision to live his life to the fullest up to the very end. He enjoyed lots of loving visits from family and friends, went on a couple of fishing trips and even had his wife Judy, who he adored, put up a Christmas tree in September so he could enjoy the season one last time. Even his remembrance services were filled with his wit and playful spirit. He planned his memorial in great detail and in true Bob style. Per his request, Judy wore the t-shirt he had worn in the Teeco Dunk Tank at the Western Propane Convention back in 2002. Some of you may remember that shirt… adorned with a picture of a bikini on the front. (see photo on the right) Bob and his wife Judy enjoying retirement Two fellow Marines from Billings, Montana also came to bury their brother with the flag and a very moving tribute. Bob certainly made his mark on the Propane Industry as well... Bob began his career in the Propane Industry with Petrolane, working as a janitor when he was in school; a career that would span 47 years. After school, he served in the Marine Corps for 4 years, and in the reserves for 7 years. He also earned his Associates Degree in Agriculture. Bob and Judy with their 13th grandchild He then returned to work for Petrolane, working on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington, and Coeur d’Alene, ID and spent six years in Fairbanks where he worked putting in the Alaska Pipeline. He and Judy were able to go back up there years later to see his work on the pipeline, and even touch it. During his time at Petrolane, Bob worked in various parts of the West and the Rocky Mountain area as District Manager, Area Sales Manager, Senior Area Technician, and a number of other positions. He joined Teeco in August 2000 and served as our Rocky Mountain Area Regional Sales Manager until his retirement in August 2012. He made countless friends in the industry, and few could forget his fun and cantankerous personality! Bob continued putting his years of experience to work even after retirement. Back home in Wyoming, he volunteered his time and knowledge to put on training sessions to help local authorities learn how to extinguish propane fires. He went to the fire departments and they lit tanks on fire to teach the firefighters how to best handle propane-related incidents. Even up to the last few months of his life, he had people contacting him to ask for his help and expertise in this field. Bob Page (left) and Mike Gould (right) in their sexy dunk tank attire In addition to his decades of service to the Propane Industry, Bob was an awesome Grandpa to 13 grandkids and Dad to 7. He was also quite the pie maker, especially during holiday time. Bob will certainly be missed, and we end this tribute with a couple of his most famous words… “Love, Bob.” Memorial contributions to honor Bob Page may be made to Central Wyoming Hospice or the Wyoming Wounded Warrior Project. Page 4 A few of Bob’s scrumptious pies Updates from SM-30 Motor Mounted Switch Box Update Effective immediately, the SM-30 motor mounted switch boxes used in conjunction with Corken’s closed-coupled C-model turbine pumps are no longer mounted to the electric motor prior to shipping. Instead they will ship as a loose item within the box containing the C-model turbine pump (see photo below). This is the same packing procedure used with the S-30 wall mounted switch boxes. This change is to eliminate some installation issues in the field. Many times the conduit position of a pre-mounted switch box does not match the incoming conduit at the application site. When this happens, the electrician must change the mounting direction by rotating the switch box. If the switch inside the switch box is not disconnected from the wiring prior to rotating the switch box, the wiring and conduit nipple can be damaged. All C-model cardboard boxes are clearly marked on the outside with the applicable pump model number followed by one of the following switch box par t numbers: • S-30 (wall mounted switch box) • SM-30 (motor mounted switch box) Benefits of this change: • Eliminates installation issues and delays in the field. • Last minute mounting changes are easily accommodated by simply exchanging one switch box type for another without the hassle of removing a pre-mounted switch box from the pump motor. • Nipple cover added to protect wiring during transit and installation. Z4200 and Z4500 Sliding Vane Pumps - New Blade Design In an ongoing effort to improve product performance and durability, Corken announced a blade/vane change for all Z4200 and Z4500 sliding vane pumps effective immediately. The new blade design is significantly stronger and provides longer service life. The strength improvement is achieved by thickening the leading edge of the vane, and the service life gain is due to increased surface area. These enhancements to strength and durability accommodate the sudden pressure surges and shock resulting from rapid closure of control valves located on the discharge line. The new blade looks slightly different from the previous as shown in the picture on the right. The part number remains the same (#4448) and is completely interchangeable with the previous design. Benefits: • Thickened leading edge strengthens the blade. • Increased surface area extends the service life. Maskey had more than 50 years’ experience in the Propane Industry and loved every Maskey Heath (right), with his wife Paula and Bob Bailey of Teeco bit of it. His parents had a propane business which he grew up in that his parents sold in later years. Early in his career he also worked for Delta Gas and Coast Gas, then joined his brother Milton Heath in business in the 1960’s in Nevada County, CA. Their company, Superior Propane, became one of the larger Independent Propane Retailers in California. The company was sold in the mid 1990’s. However, Maskey and Paula remained in the propane industry leasing tanks throughout the U.S. In 2004, Maskey and Paula purchased Pacific Propane in Monterey County, and have enjoyed running their family-owned business. Maskey also belonged to many service organizations outside of the Propane Industry, and was a member of Compass Church in Salinas, CA. His bright smile and strong industry presence will certainly be missed.
