BlindSight-E Activation Instructions
This is the BlindSight-E! The BlindSight-E is a SONAR emitter that produces a very specific pulse
once every ½ second when activated. There is no “ON-OFF” switch, the unit will run as long as the
batteries are connected. The unit comes with 2 Alkaline 9 volt batteries installed, but not connected.
These instructions are mainly concerned with getting the batteries properly connected and getting the
unit operating. Some horses may need to have the unit placed in their vicinity for a few days to
acclimate to the sound before actually mount to the horses tack.
As there are many kinds of bridles, halters and etc., no specific instructions for mounting are included.
That is up to the equine professional. We do include pictures describing how the first units were
mounted at Crosswinds Equine Rescue.
Activating The Unit
Put the unit on a table with the side with all the stamped in writing down. Now that the unit is on it's
back remove all four(4) screws that hold the cover plate in place. It is normal for the lid to “pop-up” to
some degree as the unit contains some compressed neoprene rubber used as shock absorber.
Here the unit is open on it's “back”. The two black box structures are the shock absorbers for the
batteries. Near or under these small neoprene rubber boxes you will find two 9 volt battery clips. A
flap at one end of the neoprene boxes allows access to the actual batteries.
Actual activation is easy! Just take the insulating tape off of each battery and connect one of the
battery connectors. Close the flaps on the battery boxes and put back inside the unit in the same
orientation. The pictures above show this procedure and the position where the boxes are to be placed.
That's it for activation. All that remains is to close the case and the unit is ready for mounting.
When replacing the cover, make sure no wires get
pinched in the case closure. It is normal to have to
compress the top to get the cover down and the
screws in. Screw in the screws firmly, but do not
over tighten!
MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE SCREWS! If you really lean on the screws
when tightening you will likely strip them out of the case or break them off. For extra protection
from screws loosening and falling out we recommend two possible procedures. The screw heads
sealed into place with semi-permanent Loctite® (Blue) or equivalent product. Alternately small
pieces of Gorilla Tape® can be placed over each screw head. Extra screws are provided.
Make sure you hang onto the spares kit provided. All external hardware is included in the kit.
The device needs to be mounted case opening down. That means the side with all the stamped in
writing needs to be “up”! Mile Cross from Crosswinds Equine Rescue has work out a good 3 point
mounting system. The system uses stainless steel or nickel plated split rings to mount to the 3 provided
mounting points. Several ring sizes are included. This is so that the unit may be mounted at the proper
angle. The correct angle can be seen in the following images. We believe that a very slight down tilt
with the horses head in it's normal position works best.
Near the end here it is probably best to go back to what the BlindSight device is and how it works. Use
of the device relies on an animal's inherent ability to use it's hearing for echolocation. Echolocation is
how bats and dolphins can “see” with their ears. Small high pitched sounds are emitted by the animal
and the ears and brain decode the returned echos as an “image”. Horses and dogs have the necessary
“software” in their heads. They inherited the ability to echolocate from their antecedents. What they
really cannot do is make a proper sound for echolocation. A significant amount of the 2 years+
development time was devoted to getting the best possible pulse from a device that was lightweight and
had good battery life. The unit's correct operation is obvious, as the equine version of BlindSight
pulses in the human hearing range. Indoors the sound can be quite irritating! When nearing time for
battery replacement listen for a weak pulse. If your horse seems to have trouble imaging (pacing in a
small area, and head throwing, obviously trying to scan with the unit over and over) replace the
batteries. If the pulse is missing or weak change the batteries. Always have spare 9V batteries at hand.

Alkaline 9V batteries = 1 year+
Lithium Premium 9V batteries = 3 year +
(In temperatures below -4F Lithium batteries are required!)
As was previously stated, it may be beneficial to introduce the device slowly to some animals. After
about of month of use your horse should be able to consistently image objects down to 3 ½ inches.
Because of the frequencies involved imaging of objects less than 3 ½ inches is unreliable. Chain link
and other wire fences are usually invisible to the horse using the device.
