2014 annual report - Bismarck State College
2014 annual report
investing in education
Every year a milestone
In 1978, the newly organized Bismarck Junior College Development Foundation reported $69,000 in assets. Since that time, the
Foundation has accrued assets of more than $31 million. This is a testament to the commitment and generosity of our donors
through the years. However, it’s not what you have it’s what you do with it.
The 2014 Bismarck State College Foundation annual report provides the opportunity to thank our donors, alumni and industry
partners for helping us award more than $450,000 in scholarships to nearly 500 students attending Bismarck State College. We are
incredibly proud that four out of every five students who applied for a scholarship from the Foundation, received one.
In addition to scholarships, the Foundation awarded $840,564 to support faculty and staff with internal grants allowing them to
pursue innovation in the classroom and advancement in their careers – driving qualities of the exceptional education Bismarck
State College provides. That brings the total support to BSC over the past 37 years to over $13 million.
The Foundation’s mission is to “engage in those activities that support and assist in the development and advancement of
Bismarck State College,” and we are clear that students are at the heart of that development and advancement. In a time when
student debt is skyrocketing nationwide, the strong financial support received from our donors ensures that students have access
to quality, affordable education at BSC. For every area of study at BSC, your gifts provide scholarship opportunities!
Studies have shown that investment in a college education results in an impressive return. The American Association of Community
Colleges recently found that for every $1 a student spends on his or her community college education, he or she sees an ROI of
$3.80, with associate-degree holders earning an average of $41,900 per year in mid-career, about $10,700 more than those with a
high-school diploma only. In North Dakota, with our booming job market, we know those average salaries are even higher. Without
the generosity and support of our donors, students are less likely to afford the education that will get them into those higher
salaried jobs.
Goals are set to be achieved. Milestones are reached when goals are exceeded. Thank you for helping the BSC Foundation
exceed our goals. Thank you for providing the gift of education, empowering Bismarck State College students to reach their
own milestones.

2013-14 Fiscal Report
The Bismarck State College Foundation abides by all guidelines of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and the Donor’s Bill of Rights. Our cost to raise
a dollar is 9.3¢, which is competitive with other organizations and well below the percentage required by oversight agencies. The BSC Foundation is a 501(c)3,
non-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible as allowed by state and federal tax laws. Most of our funds are permanently endowed, so the assets
will be available to assist BSC and students for many generations. Our endowment qualifies for the State of North Dakota 40 percent tax credit.

Salaries and Benefits
Remembering Ron Becker’s “huge heart”
Ron Becker, a 1965 graduate of Bismarck Junior
College, worked for the Bismarck Public Schools
for more than 40 years. He taught sixth grade,
worked to transition North Dakota to the metric
system and then served as the principal of seven
different elementary schools in Bismarck. Yet,
when he retired it was not to take up golfing or
gardening or well-deserved puttering of any sort.
Instead, this dedicated educator went back into
the classroom – substitute teaching throughout the
school district and helping inmates at the North
Dakota State Penitentiary earn their GEDs. He
continued on this path until he passed away at age
68 in September 2013.
Daughter Holly Becker-Lockett says that when her
father died, her Facebook account exploded with
people sharing stories about him.
Every morning, Mr. Becker greeted each child,
parent and sibling who entered the doors of
the school he was administering at the time. He
was known for helping people without drawing
attention to it. “He used to ask kids he knew didn’t
have lunch money to do some job for him, and
then he’d quietly buy their lunch as payment,” son
Scott Becker said.
“People kept telling us, ‘when I think of my
childhood, I think of your dad,’” Holly said. “He
wore a suit every day, and he had all these crazy
ties – Disney ties, Jerry Garcia, cartoon characters.
So between that, and his loud booming voice, you
always knew where he was.”
“Dad had this huge heart and he valued
education, kids and this community,” she said.
Initially, the family didn’t know how to honor
Ron’s life’s work. A chance encounter with one of
Holly’s former professors at BSC, led her to the
BSC Foundation. She contacted Gordon Binek,
Foundation Executive Director, and he provided
the information and paperwork needed to set up
a scholarship. A couple of weeks later, the Ron
Becker Memorial Scholarship was established.
As soon as Scott and Holly decided to endow the
scholarship, it just felt right. The siblings surprised
their mother, Donna Becker, with the scholarship at
Christmas, presenting her with a plaque created by
the Foundation.
“She loved it,” Holly said. “Everyone in our family
felt this was the perfect way to honor our dad.”
Ron and Donna, (who taught special education in
the public schools for many years) were committed
not only to Bismarck K-12 education, but to BSC as
well. Ron, Scott and Holly all graduated from BSC.
And Donna began her college career there.
“We always heard great things about BSC from
mom and dad. It was convenient and low cost,
and it was just an easy decision,” Scott said. “I
received a high quality education and participated
in campus life. I identify more with BSC than NDSU
where I went later.”
Holly concurred. “BSC is where my best college
memories are.”
When Scott attended BSC, he received the Adrian
and Ardeth Taylor Scholarship. It turned out that
Adrian and Ardeth Taylor’s daughter was a good
friend of his mother’s.
“Bismarck is a place with a lot of ties and
connections. With this scholarship we might be
able to give to someone who has a tie to our dad
in some way,” Scott said.
4
The Becker family (left to right) Ron, Donna, Holly and Scott.
Fully endowed, the Becker scholarship will begin
providing an annual $1,000 gift to a Bismarck
student with financial need this fall. Preference
will be given to students who are the first in their
family to go to college and those pursuing a
degree in education.
By fully endowing the scholarship both Scott, who
lives in Bismarck, and Holly who lives in Wylie,
Texas, earned a tax credit in 2013. While the tax
credit was helpful, Scott and Holly say it’s the
legacy that matters to them.
“The scholarship allowed us to continue our dad’s
life’s work – helping kids.”
Giving to grow: Sakariassens’ ties to BSC are personal
John (Bob) Sakariassen’s involvement in the
BSC Foundation was preordained in 1936 when
he and the late Kermit Lidstrom became first
graders together in Mandan. They remained
friends throughout high school and when Kermit
returned to Bismarck in 1977 to assume the role of
president of Bismarck Junior College, they became
reacquainted.
students have what they need in a time of
rising costs.
“There were many unfunded needs at the college
at the time and I got regular phone calls from
Kermit asking, ’I need a little help with this.’ Like it
or not, he got me very involved.”
Both men are committed to Lidstrom’s original
goal for the Foundation.
When Kermit began to organize the Foundation, it
was natural that John would be involved. John was
serving as the president of the Board of Trustees
when the “Fifty and Forward” campaign was
launched during the college’s 50th anniversary in
1989. The campaign was the first major fundraiser
for the fledgling foundation. The goal was to raise
$500,000 and was considered quite ambitious.
With the efforts of many volunteers, the goal was
exceeded. Today, in contrast, the Foundation
provides nearly $500,000 in scholarships each year.
In 1997, as John moved into retirement, his son
Erik assumed the trustee position sponsored
by Saks News, their family business. John
remained involved, however, and was named
trustee emeritus.
“They thought they had to talk me into it. I knew
I was interested and could make a difference,”
Erik said.
Right away, Erik joined the Programs Committee,
which he chaired in 1998-99. He initiated the move
to raise academic scholarships from $800 to $1,000
and says it’s time to raise them again to ensure
Erik also supported a requirement that scholarship
recipients write letters of thanks to donors.
“Donors need to hear from students and find out
how their donation is put to work.”
“Kermit’s key goal was to provide scholarships.
That’s what he talked about the most – helping
kids afford to go to school,” John said.
Erik came on board in the midst of the Jack
Science Center effort—the first time
the Foundation conducted a capital
campaign for a building.
“Great contacts in the energy industry allowed
us to nail down major gifts, and the trustees were
really gung-ho on the project,” he said.
That effort illustrated just how much the
Foundation had grown and continues to
grow today.
Though neither John nor Erik attended BSC, both
men express enthusiasm and commitment to the
college and the Foundation. According to John,
“The phenomenal growth of the college required
a commitment on the part of the community, and
support in Bismarck has been without parallel.”
Erik added that “to grow a campus in this day and
age, you can’t do it without a foundation.”
“That project changed the direction
of how bricks and mortar were done
at BSC,” he said.
The state was not awash in oil
money at the time, and everyone
worked hard to get the building off
the ground.
“It told the community that more was
going on here than a high school on
the hill,” he said.
Ten years later, Erik served as the
Foundation Board of Trustees
President when the college broke
ground on the National Energy
Center of Excellence.

Paul and Judy Bodmer design their legacy
As Paul and Judith Bodmer transitioned into
retirement, they began thinking about the shape
of their leisure years. They also thought about the
shape of their legacy.
The Bodmers contacted Gordon Binek, BSC
Foundation Executive Director, who told them that
you don’t have to be gone to do good.
“He mentioned that we could transfer some of our
retirement funds to BSC and gain a tax advantage.
We did some research and found that this would
be a good thing for us,” Paul Bodmer said.
Paul was an English faculty member at BSC for
30 years and says the couple built up a healthy
retirement fund. “We want to help students
entering the [English] profession. In order to enter
it, many need financial support,” he said.
The Bodmers’ gift will provide the first
endowed scholarship for students pursuing
an English degree.
According to Binek, the Bodmers exemplify the
donors he works with every day.
never met a donor who didn’t find great joy
in giving.”
“People give for many reasons: to establish
their legacy, a commitment to the mission of the
organization and for the feel good factor. I’ve
Today the Bodmers live in Lindstrom, Minn.,

joyful – by what they give.
The Rewards of Giving
Federal and state provisions provide several benefits for charitable giving. For more information
contact the BSC Foundation at [email protected] or 701-224-5700.
N.D. State Tax Credit for Planned, Deferred or Outright Gifts
Individuals may receive a state tax credit for a planned or outright gift (e.g., charitable remainder trusts,
charitable gift annuities, life insurance policies, etc.) to a qualified North Dakota charitable nonprofit or
a qualified North Dakota endowment. The tax credit is 40 percent of the charitable deduction allowed
by the IRS up to a maximum credit of $10,000 per year, per taxpayer or $20,000 per year, per couple
filing jointly.
IRA Rollover Provision
The tax code allows for a rollover distribution of IRA investments of up to $100,000 per year to a
qualified charity. The funds need to be transferred directly to a charity, such as BSC Foundation. The
rollover is not taxed as income and qualifies for the required minimum distribution (RMD). A great
bonus for North Dakota taxpayers – the rollover is eligible for the 40% ND tax credit.
Lloyd Ritchie: A generous friend
In the 1930s and 1940s, Homer Ritchie served as
caretaker of the State Capitol in Bismarck where
the bulk of his work took place in the evenings
after the legislators, lawmakers and public visitors
had gone home. Over the years, Homer forged
a friendship with ND Supreme Court Justice A.
M. Christianson, who often worked late in his
chambers. The Judge took a liking to Homer’s
young son Lloyd who frequently spent evenings
at the Capitol with his dad.
As Lloyd grew, his friendship with Judge
Christianson and his family grew, too. According
the Judge’s grandson, Jim, Lloyd became part
of the Christianson family at age 12, taken in by
Jim’s parents, Marc and Betty, following his parents
divorce. He lived with the Christiansons until he
graduated from Bismarck Junior College.
Lloyd helped Jim learn to swim, and he taught
Jim’s sister Mary how to drive. He lent a hand on
the Christianson farm and later helped Marc build
6
cages and clear trees for what would become the
Dakota Zoo. He lived with the Christiansons in
the late 1950s and made sure the Judge’s widow,
“Skipper,” was cared for after the Judge died
in 1954.
“Lloyd was a great guy. Respectful,
straight as an arrow and like a
brother to us.”
– Jim Christianson
continued on next page
Marc and Betty were partly responsible for Lloyd
attending college at BJC, and Lloyd was forever
grateful for the family’s support and generosity.
“Lloyd was a great guy. Respectful, straight as an
arrow and like a brother to us,” Jim says.
Lloyd graduated from Bismarck Junior College
in 1960, eventually ending up in Virginia, first as
a teacher and then as an insurance agent. Lloyd
was an avid and successful investor, watching and
studying stocks for opportunities.
He returned to North Dakota frequently, and kept
stong ties to Bismarck through his friends, family
and BSC. Over the years Lloyd often donated to
the BSC Foundation. He never sought recognition
for himself, but preferred to donate in honor of the
Christiansons and for the direct benefit of students.
A frequent traveler, Lloyd was a student of
the world, gathering tremendous amounts of
information about the places he visited. BSC
Foundation Executive Director Gordy Binek and his
wife Paula visited Lloyd several times, and found
themselves taking in every road and interesting site
in Virginia. “Our road trips always included ‘one
more stop’ and the return to the hotel was always a
little later than expected. But Lloyd loved sharing,
and the road trips were one of the ways he shared,”
Binek says.
Lloyd passed away in 2012. With the energy of a
much younger man, his endearing use of the word
“golly” and his ever-present baseball cap, Lloyd
is remembered as an enthusiastic and generous
friend. In 2011, Lloyd established a charitable
remainder trust, the principle of which was added
to the Marc & Betty Christianson Memorial
Scholarship Fund at his death. He also included
the BSC Foundation in his will, providing a
substantial bequest and a legacy that will be felt
for many years.
Rooted in Bismarck, branching out to students
The Huber family owned a large farm south of
Bismarck where Gary and his three brothers grew
up. His father died in 1975, dividing hundreds of
acres equally amongst the brothers. Over time,
Gary and his wife Bunny, developed their part of
the farm.
“Rather than 140 acres for a backyard, we thought
‘why not develop it’?” Gary said.
A lone tree marks the location of Gary Huber’s family farm.
A Bismarck landmark, the lone tree on Burleigh
Avenue is more than 100 years old. Its roots go
deep and its branches reach widely. For Gary
Huber that lone tree marks the location of his
family farm; it also symbolizes how a family with
deep roots in the land can use that land to
branch out.
That development went well and is now the
Secluded Acres area of town. As the family worked
together to sell the other parcels, they discovered
that, for tax purposes, it worked well to ask not-forprofit organizations to do the selling and keep the
profits. That is how the Hubers ended up working
with the BSC Foundation.
“We told Gordy, if you can sell it, you can keep it.
He got it fixed up and that was part of the gift we
gave to BSC,” Gary said.
Gary graduated from BJC in 1957. Then he went
into the U.S. Army and worked as a welder. The
couple left Bismarck for a while, running a water
well business in which they traveled the region.
7
Additionally,
Gary spent
20 years
teaching
welding
Bunny and Gary Huber
at United
Tribes Technical College in Bismarck.
The Hubers do not have children, but always
wanted to help young people.
“Bunny and I sat down a while back and decided
to help others. My three brothers are gone, and
we don’t have children or many relatives close to
us anymore,” Gary said.
While the couple had set up a gift annuity,
giving land and money to BSC over the years,
they decided to make the BSC Foundation the
beneficiary of their entire estate. “The nice part
of it is that it will help younger people that need it.
There are a lot of things out there that get in the
way. If someone needs a few dollars to get
an education, then, thank goodness, we can
help them.”
Winnifred Hedahl: Honoring the past, supporting the future
In December 2012, Winnifred Hedahl established
the Winnifred Coyne Hedahl Student Nurse
Scholarship. In July, the Foundation spoke to
Winnifred Hedahl about her motivation for creating
the scholarship and her family ties to Bismarck
State College. It was a delightful conversation with
a lovely and entertaining woman. Winnifred passed
away on August 9 at age 91.
I am a nurse. When I told my parents I wanted to
study nursing at the St. Mary’s School of Nursing
in Rochester, Minnesota, my father said, “Well,
Winnifred, you have a good secretarial position
right here at Provident Life.
Raised in Starkweather and Bismarck, N.D.,
Winnifred Coyne spent the early 1940s earning a
nursing degree from St. Mary’s School of Nursing
in Rochester, Minn., and then serving in the U.S.
Navy Cadet Nurse Corps in San Diego until the
war ended.
“Yes.”
In 1946, she returned to Bismarck for what she
expected to be a short visit with her mother.
Instead, she stayed in Bismarck the rest of her life,
taking a job as a nurse at Quain & Ramstad Clinic
and not long after that marrying Neil Hedahl, who
was working with his brother Erling at the family’s
auto parts company.
Her formal employment as a nurse was short, but
she never quit using the skills and knowledge of
the profession. Winnifred said she used her nursing
skills regularly over the years as the mother of five
children. Throughout her life she carried with her
the disciplines and ways of thinking she learned
as a nurse. When she decided to establish a
scholarship at BSC in 2012, she hearkened back to
that early education and profession, establishing
the Winnifred Coyne Hedahl Student Nurse
Scholarship.
Winnifred shared her reasons for funding
the scholarship:
Are you sure that’s what you want
to do?”
“Well, nurses work very hard.”
“Yes, I know how to work.”
“Well, you’ll learn a lot of stuff that’s none of your
business.”
“Yes, I know.”
So I spent almost four years in Rochester, and
indeed what my father said was true. I did work
hard and studied hard and learned “a lot of stuff.”
When I became a graduate registered nurse, I
came back to Bismarck for a short vacation. That
was in 1946, and I’m still here! I worked at the Q&R
Clinic for two years. I married, and we had five
children. Through those years I used my pediatric
nurse skills. Though my formal employment as a
nurse was brief, even now hardly a day goes by
that I’m not grateful for my education as a nurse.
When I decided to start a scholarship for student
nurses here at BSC, I told my family I could surely
have used such a scholarship when I started out.
Now perhaps I can enable another young person
to have a wonderful education as I did as a nurse.
A nurse is love.
Winnifred Hedahl established a nursing scholarship in 2012.
Winnifred said many members of the Hedahl family
either took classes at BSC or hoped to, so helping
others attend made sense to her. “Even our
mothers both wanted to take classes there when
they were older,” she said, and both were already
college graduates. Over the years Winnifred
herself took poetry, history and political science
classes as well as enrichment classes.
Neil attended BJC from 1941-43 prior to serving
in the Army in World War II, and was a trustee
on the BSC Foundation board. Neil died in 1986
and, shortly thereafter, the Neil Hedahl Memorial
Scholarship was established to honor him.
Neil’s sister Beulah was a member of BJC’s first
graduating class and was named an outstanding
alum in 1980.
continued on next page
8
Over the years, several of the Hedahl children and
grandchildren took classes at BSC. In particular,
son Dick Hedahl, president of Hedahls Inc., took
Calculus through BSC and has served on the
Foundation Board of Trustees since 2011; and
daughter Jane (Hedahl) Schreck also took Calculus
through BSC, and is now a professor at BSC.
The Hedahls’ long history with Bismarck State
College and generosity to the BSC Foundation has
run parallel to the family’s growing business and
expanding families. From a turn-of-the-century
hardware store in Mercer, N.D., that also sold
Model T Fords, today the thriving family enterprise
encompasses 23 auto parts stores in the upper
Midwest, a warehouse distribution center (NEMAC
Warehouse), an equipment sales company (BENCO
Equipment), and a retail tire company (Main Street
Tire), as well as real estate and leasing companies.
In addition to their individual contributions, Hedahls
Inc. has been highly supportive of BSC’s automotive
programs, providing thousands of dollars in
equipment and in-kind donations over the years.
Winnifred’s family reports that she talked for many
years about establishing a scholarship to help
student nurses. She was very happy to have done
so while she was living, and able to enjoy the
knowledge that part of her legacy would be to
give someone the kind of financial help she could
have used as a student nurse. The Winnifred Coyne
Hedahl Student Nurse Scholarship does just that.
President’s Run raises funds for Ed Kringstad Memorial Scholarship
Fifty-one motorcycle and car enthusiasts joined
Bismarck State College Interim President Dave
Clark on Friday, July 11, for the 2014 President’s
Run. Participants traveled to the Knife River Indian
Villages for a tour and then onto the Lewis & Clark
Interpretive Center where lunch was provided
courtesy of BlackRidgeBANK, Cloverdale Foods
and Larry Rolfson.
The event raised $18,500 for the Ed Kringstad
Memorial Scholarship fund, established recently to
honor longtime Hall of Fame wrestling coach and
athletic director, Ed Kringstad, who passed away in
May of 2013.
At BJC/BSC, Ed touched many lives as a coach,
administrator and dance instructor. As a North
Dakota state senator, he was a champion for the
community he represented. For those who had
the privilege of knowing Ed Kringstad, his legacy
is that of a considerate man, generous spirit and
dear friend. Gary Schumacher, BSC alumnus and
Bismarck business person, provided a $10,000
lead gift to establish the Ed Kringstad Memorial
Scholarship fund.
“Every person who knew Ed Kringstad knew
he was a special man. Ed Kringstad always was
amazing,” Schumacher said.
Endowing a scholarship provides a permanent
fund or source of income for student
scholarships. In an effort to endow the fund,
the Foundation will work to raise an additional
$8,000. Once endowed, the Ed Kringstad
Memorial Scholarship will award $1,000 each
year to a BSC student in perpetuity.
Contributions to the Ed Kringstad Memorial
Scholarship are tax deductible and may be
eligible for a North Dakota state 40 percent
tax credit (consult your tax advisor). All
contributions to the Ed Kringstad Memorial
Scholarship fund are eligible for a 50 percent
match from the state through the end of 2014,
making contributions even more impactful.
To donate to the fund, contact the
BSC Foundation.

BSC professor receives $25,000 Jack fellowship
Anita Wirtz, assistant
professor of psychology at
BSC, received the 2014 Jack
Fellowship Award from the
BSC Foundation.
The late Tom and Peg
Jack, lead contributors to
BSC’s Jack Science Center,
endowed the Jack Fellowship
in 1999. The $25,000
Anita Wirtz
fellowship helps BSC faculty
and staff further their education, conduct research
or pursue other professional development. A
committee appointed by the BSC Foundation
selects the recipients of the fellowship – one that is
often referred to as “a life changer”.
experience. She works as a volunteer with BSC
athletic teams.
Wirtz plans to apply the fellowship toward
completion of a doctorate in psychology from
Capella University in Minneapolis. She will use
the funds for tuition and expenses related to her
degree.
A native of Williston, N.D., Wirtz serves on the
BSC Assessment Committee and helped plan
BSC’s “September 11 – Ten Years Later: Impact on

“I am so grateful to be selected for this
fellowship,” Wirtz said. “I hope to give back
to BSC with my innovation in the classroom,
expansion of the psychology lab, contributions
to BSC’s four-year psychology articulation with
Minot State University, assistance to BSC athletic
programs, and the committees I serve on here.”

The Harley
and Margaret
Swenson
Scholarship
Harley and
Margaret
Swenson have
given to BSC
for years, from
investment
land to
monetary
gifts. Early
on they decided to “invest in something we
believed in and help people in the future.”
These longtime BSC supporters recently
took advantage of the federal and state
tax benefits in place to establish a new
endowment that provides a $1,000 per year
scholarship to a BSC student for perpetuity.
At the federal level, a person can roll over
part of an IRA to charity and that amount
won’t count as federal taxable income. For
North Dakotans, the transfer of the IRA
rollover to the endowment fund includes a
40 percent state income tax credit, as well.
In addition, until December 31st, the BSC
Foundation endowment fund will receive a
50 percent match from the N.D. Legislature’s
Challenge Grant. For example, a $20,000
IRA rollover will result in a $30,000
scholarship fund.
“We’re inclined to make gifts anyway, but this
really cinched the deal,” Harley said. “The
Legislature has been generous in allowing us
to offset some of our general taxes by letting
us give to a cause we believe in. They are to
be commended for that.”
The couple has always been interested
in education.
education that can sometimes seem out of
reach financially.
“We love BSC. Harley graduated from here,
and I’ve heard all these nice stories,”
Margaret said.
“We’ve gotten so many letters over the years
from students who received our scholarships.
I’ve been so touched by that,” Margaret said.
Harley also believes that the availability of
scholarships influences a student’s choice
of schools.

The stories come from Harley,$1,000,000

Jason is a Linton native and a BSC alumnus.
He was unsure of his career plans when he
first started at BSC, but he became interested
in business while working on his generals. He
went on to major in business administration at
Minnesota State University - Moorhead.
Nigeria grew up in an Air Force family,
moving frequently.
“We like the idea of something that lives on
when we aren’t here anymore,” Jason said.

have to set myself back financially,” he said.
The Stahl’s endowed scholarship is focused on

Students express their thanks to donors
Words cannot express how truly honored I feel to be a
recipient of this scholarship. This has given me an opportunity
to achieve my goals and hopefully one day become as
influential and helpful as your family. A dream of mine has
always been to help the people around me. Receiving such an
amazing gift reinforces that dream even more!
I am thankful beyond measure! I pray you
and your family are blessed abundantly for
your kindness!!!
Sierra Rath, Walter and Lucille Braun Scholarship Recipient
This scholarship is made possible by the Schuchard’s enduring generosity.
Now, their contributions are helping me expand my knowledge, career
options and ability to change the way people learn, interact and
communicate via the internet. I promise to not take their gift for granted
and to work harder to make a bigger contribution to the people in our
region, our country and elsewhere. Thank you, again, for this scholarship
and for your contributions to academia and the world.
Lelan Bosch, Lyle and Charlene Schuchard Scholarship Recipient
I want to express how grateful I am for your generous
donation and to thank you for choosing me as your recipient
of the Capital City Lions Scholarship. I have never received a
scholarship until now, so I hadn’t put much thought into the
kind actions taken by different scholarship donors to support
college students. By receiving my own scholarship, I have
learned that this thoughtfulness is not required by individuals,
but contributions such as these are from the hearts of caring
people. I would, once again, like to thank you for your
kindness and I am honored that I was chosen for
this scholarship.
Matthew Messer, Capital City Lions Scholarship Recipient
18
Words cannot be formulated to
thank you enough for your financial
assistance at this time in my life.
Although I have not completely
determined what my major will be,
it will definitely be an education that
will assist me in attaining a degree
that benefits others. Throughout my
life, the things that make me feel
most worthwhile are the acts that
assist those who are around me.
Thank you, again, for your immense
generosity toward me. I will not
take this scholarship for granted. It will be my goal to live an
honorable life, just as the names of those who are named for
this scholarship.
Landen Schmeichel, Leona P. and Francis A. Larson/JC
Penney Scholarship Recipient
I am so grateful to have been
selected to receive an academic
scholarship in memory of Dr. Eugene
Kralicek. I am truly amazed at
Dr. Kralicek’s accomplishments, his
interests in many different collections,
his travels and his involvement in
the community. I am so thankful for
the generous donation your father,
Dr. Kralicek, has made to the BSC
Foundation. Because of his caring
and generosity, I have been given the
opportunity to learn about his life and
am so grateful to have been given a scholarship in memory of
such an amazing person.

Building on a Bremer grant
The BSC Foundation secured a $166,250 grant
from the Otto Bremer Foundation to fund a new
library for the college. The library will be an
integral part of the new Communications and
Creative Arts Center, which was proposed in
2012 after a structural study showed severe
disrepair and structural issues within the current
BSC library building.
The BSC Library and Information Commons will be
a tech-infused, comfortable, and flexible learning
space as well as an academic and information help
center. It will be a space designed to enhance
learning, foster a sense of community, and provide
an environment that is both academic and social.
Along with elements of a traditional
library such as printed books and
media materials along with eBooks
and streaming video, it will provide
learning spaces for individual
study and for group collaboration
and interaction. The Library and
Information Commons will be a
place where users can access,
use, and create information, as
well as get high-quality help
with both information and
technology resources.

I have been an EMS for 23 years, mostly
in Washington, D.C. Typically, in my EMS
experience, we end up with cast-off
equipment from nursing programs and very
seldom do we have brand new, state-of-theart equipment. I am extremely impressed by
the quality of the EMS education resources
here at BSC. In all of my travels, I have not
had an opportunity to utilize such high quality
mannequins and simulators. I feel blessed to
enter my position at BSC knowing I have such
excellent teaching resources. This equipment
will enable our students to learn their skills in
the classroom with the best resources at their
disposal, which will give our N.D. residents,
who our students will eventually be treating,
the best possible pre-hospital care available.
Again, my sincere gratitude for providing us
with these amazing resources!

Our mission
To enhance and develop BSC through
lifelong involvement.
Our goal
To keep you connected to BSC.
Whether you are a recent graduate of BSC, one
of the trailblazers who attended those early
classes offered by Bismarck Junior College on the
third floor at BHS or anyone between – the BSC
National Alumni Association is your organization.
Established in 1961, the association focuses on
keeping alumni connected to the college and
working with current student groups to develop
relationships while they are on campus. The alumni
association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Any former BJC/BSC student interested in
the mission of the Alumni Association may
become a supporting member with a $25 annual
contribution. Supporting members may benefit
from our Alumni Advantage Program, which
includes discounts on hotel reservations, car
rentals, BSC Bookstore clothing and local
business discounts.
A lifetime membership through the 1939 Society
– our premier membership program – allows
our alumni and friends to support and sustain
programs and projects in the years to come.

Remembering teacher, friend through the 1939 Society
When Robb Boyd, ’78,
enrolled at BJC he was broke
and undecided, a small town
farm kid who knew that he
needed a degree, but not
sure which degree or what to
do once he earned it.
He is grateful that a teacher
at BJC took the time to
Robb Boyd
show him the way. Speech
instructor Paul Johnson helped Boyd find a niche
in speech and a worldview. With Johnson’s help
and guidance he won several speech competitions
affording him his first chance to travel and broaden
his horizons.
Johnson taught voice and diction, basic technical
production and speech at BJC from 1975 to 1982.
He came to BSC from a student teaching position
at the Royal Russell School at Croyden in England.
“Paul was a Fargo boy, and a freethinking liberal
in a conservative institution. He was avidly well
read and had studied at Oxford. He loved English
especially Shakespeare. Traveling with him to
speech competitions was eye-opening. He had
a huge impact on my life. He was as cultured as
anyone I ever met,” Boyd says.
It was Johnson who inspired Boyd to take time
after BJC to live on a farm in France and study
the language. From there he went on to Indiana
University where he pursued a bachelor’s degree
in French.
BSC made the transfer easy. “Every single class
I took at BSC transferred to IU. I felt so well
prepared there,” he says. “BSC was affordable for
people like me without any means. It gave me a
launching pad to do other things.”
Boyd did many other things. After earning his
degree in French, Boyd first went into institutional
food sales.
“I did it because I liked good restaurants – Paul
introduced me to good food and good wine.”
Boyd married (Johnson was his best man), had two
sons, and changed careers becoming a financial
advisor with Edward Jones. Boyd opened the first
Edward Jones branch in Bismarck.
“If we’re fortunate, we’ll meet one
or two great teachers in our lives.
Paul was one of those people”
– Robb Boyd
“When I first came back, I was having a little
success and Kermit Lidstrom pulled me into the
alumni board – I was even president for a year or
two,” he says.
After 15 years in Bismarck, the firm asked him to
move to Toronto and build up the organization’s
training function. “I finally got to use my French in
Toronto,” Boyd says.
He closed his career setting up the British arm
of Edward Jones in London. Through all of those
changes, Johnson’s influence was there.
“If we’re fortunate, we’ll meet one or two
great teachers in our lives. Paul was one of
those people.”
25
When Boyd retired he moved back to Bismarck
and re-engaged in the BSC Alumni Association
– becoming a member of the 1939 Society and
honoring Johnson through a donation.
“[Paul] was a cultured man. In addition, he was
kind, considerate and the best friend I had. He was
taken from us too early. It is a pleasure to do a little
something to add to his legacy,” Boyd says.
Boyd’s involvement in the alumni association
helps him stay connected to what he considers a
formative time in his life.
“I have this sense that by supporting alumni, I’m
doing something for current students. I remember
being so broke I could barely afford tuition. I
think there’s no better thing to do than give back
to the place that helped you. Education
transforms people.”
1939 Society
Bismarck Junior College opened for classes
on September 4, 1939. Since then BJC,
later named Bismarck State College, has
played a vital role in the lives of thousands
of students, employees and community
members. In recognition of that legacy and in
honor of the future, the BSC National Alumni
Society established the 1939 Society in
2006. Donations support an endowment that
sustains alumni programming and campus
projects. To learn more about the 1939
Society visit bismarckstate.edu/alumni/1939.
Journey as an Artist added to ArtsQuest
The BSC National Alumni Association, in
collaboration with BSC ArtsQuest, presented a
new event to the April ArtsQuest lineup this year,
Journey as an Artist. Initiated to showcase BSC
alumni making a career with their art, Journey as
an Artist also highlights the artists’ path. Inaugural
presenters Tama Smith and Lee Hulteng are both
1977 BSC graduates.
Smith is a ceramics artist who specializes in high
fire stoneware pottery she makes at Prairie Fire
Pottery, the studio she runs in her hometown of
Beach, N.D. She fires her handmade brick kiln to
more than 2,300 degrees to achieve her fluid glaze
effects. Smith focused on fine arts at BSC and went
on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts in ceramics at
University of North Dakota and Master of Fine
Arts in ceramics at Michigan State University. After
graduation, she moved to Detroit, Mich., where
she built a studio and kiln and operated Tama
Pottery for eight years. She and husband Jerry left
Michigan to found Prairie Fire Pottery in 1995.
Hulteng made his career in journalism as a news
illustrator and freelance graphic designer and
sculptor. Between 1977 and 1985, he freelanced in
Montana at ad agencies and a design studio, and
was art director for a TV station. He took his first
newspaper job at the Grand Forks Herald in 1985,
moving to Knight-Ridder/Tribune News Service
in Washington, D.C. in 1997. Hulteng’s awardwinning designs have appeared in newspapers
across North and South America, Europe and Asia.
He is the recipient of a bronze Malofiej Award
from the Society for News Design, an international
nonprofit organization for visual journalists.
His metal sculptures derive from his interest in
customizing motorcycles and the influence from his
engineer father to build and fix things.
The artists’ work was displayed in the Elsa Forde
Gallery in Schafer Hall April 7-10, and was made
available for sale following an artist gallery talk
held at the end of the week.
The Alumni Association also hosts a biannual
Alumni Art Exhibit in the Gannon Gallery in the
BSC Library.

The BSC National Alumni Association board selected Dr. Brenda Werner as the 2014 Alumna
of the Year. Werner, ‘85, was chosen for her dedication to education and the students she
serves. She was honored during the Annual Alumni Dinner at BSC on May 15 and during the
BSC commencement ceremony on May 16.
Werner was head women’s volleyball and
basketball coach from 1989-92 and served as
assistant director of physical education and
athletics under Ed Kringstad.
She left BSC to pursue her doctorate in education
at the University of North Dakota. During that
time, she taught English, physical education and
coached volleyball in area high schools and at
Concordia College and Minnesota State UniversityMoorhead. In 2001, Werner moved to Bismarck
and taught for 11 years at Bismarck High School.
She combined part-time teaching for Dickinson
State University on the BSC campus and University
of Mary online classes with her full time BHS job.

Academic All-American at MSU and 2003 MSU
Hall of Fame inductee. She also served on the
BSC National Alumni Association board from
2003-2006.
“If opportunity knocks, you open the door, and I
have constantly taken advantage of that. I wanted
to get every minute out of every day,” said Werner.

Rising star focused on top notch education
When Kirsten Baesler came
to BSC in fall 1998, she knew
exactly who she was and
what she wanted to do. The
Flasher, N.D., native had
three boys, a resolute belief
in education, and the life
experience to push through
and meet and surpass
her goals.
Kirsten Baesler
“I knew I wanted to become
a teacher and started with my end in mind,”
Baesler said. “I had found that education equaled
opportunity, and going back to college at BSC
gave me an even bigger sense of that.”
After earning two associate degrees at BSC,
Baesler completed a K-8 teaching degree from
Minot State University. She
then pursued a master’s
degree in education and library
information technology at
Valley City State University.
The Rising Star Award honors alumni age 45 and under who
have shown exceptional achievement in a career, public
or volunteer service, or reached a position of distinction
for someone so recently graduated. The 2014 Rising Star
is Kirsten Baesler, ’99, for her excellence in leadership
throughout her career in education.
“I can’t say enough about
my BSC experience. Without
a doubt, I owe what I am
today to the support and effort of BSC faculty,
administration, and the Student Success Center in
helping me plan what I needed.”
Her 22-year career at Bismarck Public Schools
placed her in such roles as vice principal,
library media specialist, classroom teacher, and
instructional assistant to students with disabilities.
She served on the Mandan School Board,
including time as president. She served six months
27
as assistant executive director of the North Dakota
School Boards Association before becoming
North Dakota superintendent of public instruction
in 2012.
Baesler and her 100-member staff at the state
capitol handle school funding formulas and
countless other functions and programs involved
in oversight of North Dakota’s 473 schools and its
110,000 students in K-12.
