ROSE PARADE: JOURNEY OF HOPE
Partner hospitals unite to spread message of life
New Year’s Day of 2014 will be a special memory for
me. I was fortunate to join a delegation of organ and tissue
recipients and donor families from New Jersey who traveled
to Pasadena to witness the 125th-annual Rose Parade.

I cheered and snapped photos along Colorado Boulevard,
watching a color-drenched parade filled with brilliant floral
floats, spirited marching bands and high-stepping equestrian
units. But what truly made it memorable was the Rose
Parade Donate Life float, decorated in “floragraphs” of
people who made the generous gift of organ and tissue
donation. It was the ideal platform for donor families, living donors and transplant recipients to
inspire the world to save and heal those in need.
The float honored three New Jersey donors and celebrated the health of two New Jeresey
transplant recipients, sending our message of hope and compassion to millions of viewers around
the world.

One poignant element this year was the rose dedication garden that made up part of the float.
I was especially pleased that the CEO of every one of our hospital partners participated in a rose
dedication ceremony to send a message of support. I can’t begin to explain how critical it is for us
to work closely with our hospital partners to effectively save more lives throughout the state.

And, as a follow-up to the cover story in the last issue, it is my pleasure to report Dorothea
Duffy has received the kidney she has waited years for and already has big plans to participate in
our annual 5K Walk and USATF Certified Race. Dorothea’s story is yet another reinforcement of
the work we do at NJ Sharing Network, and how our community always comes together to provide
healing and hope for those waiting for a second chance at life.
Looking into 2014, we have many exciting events in the works. We are making plans for Donate
Life Month in April with the 54 hospitals in our service area. Donate Life Month activities include
National Blue & Green Day, the Annual Volunteer Conference/5K Kickoff event, hospital flag raisings and MVC visits, all taking place in April.

I am appreciative of the support NJ Sharing Network continues to receive. Even with our hard
work and successes, I am compelled to stay focused on the fact that nearly 5,000 people remain on
the transplant waiting list in New Jersey. As we focus on a new year, we are more dedicated than
ever to make the waiting list a thing of the past.

First, your generous contributions helped support our
interactive exhibit on organ and tissue donation at Liberty
Science Center. On one recent visit I overheard different sets
of parents discussing the healing gifts of donation with their
children — exactly the type of conversations we want the
exhibit to spark.

We began 2014 so proud of the strong New Jersey showing on the Donate Life Float at the Rose
Parade on New Year’s Day. You can read more about the float in our cover story, and please know that
your support enabled us to be represented on the float. It was a wonderful way to bring our message
to tens of thousands of people on the parade route and millions more on national television.

We are already gearing up for our fourth-annual 5K Walk and USATF Certified Race. Last year,
more than 8,000 people participated in the event, helping raise $760,000 and, more important,
spreading the word of our life-saving mission.
This year, we have set an unprecedented 5K fundraising goal of $1 million. As in years past, our
5K teams will represent donor families, recipients, volunteers, living donors, community groups,
corporate and hospital partners, and other advocates whose lives have been impacted by donation
or transplantation. I am excited for this year’s 5K and the opportunity to honor those who gave,
celebrate those who received, give hope to those who continue to wait and remember the lives lost
while waiting for the gift of life.
Let me close by introducing the newest member of our Foundation board, Cheryl Cohen, a
Chesterfield resident and health care industry professional. Cheryl’s brother’s life was extended eight
years because of the gift of a heart transplant. She was so moved by the passion she saw at NJ Sharing
Network that she knew she had to play a key role.
We are very pleased to have Cheryl on board and so thankful for the time, talent and support
you all give to our mission to save lives in New Jersey through organ and tissue donation.

Zoe’s Legacy Lives On
Patti Jackson sees the legacy of her daughter, Zoe Jackson, live on in kidney recipient Abel Montesino. Abel
received Zoe’s kidney in April 2011, when he was 13; he’s now 16 years old. Mary Ellen McGlynn, Manager
of Family Aftercare for NJ Sharing Network, was on hand for their first meeting along with Abel’s mother,
father, brother and aunt as well as other members of Patti’s family. Both families live in Newark. Along with
flowers, Abel brought a hand written letter for Patti, expressing his thanks to Patti for the transplant that
changed his life and calling Zoe his miracle. “Two beautiful, warm and caring families came together to
remember Zoe, celebrate the health of Abel, and forge a new friendship,” Mary Ellen said. Pictured, left to
right, is Abel; Abel’s mother, Carmen Arce, holding Patti’s daughter, Parker; Patti; Mary Ellen McGlynn.
Sharing Organs, Saving Lives
at Liberty Science Center
NJ Sharing Network Foundation Board Member Randi Geffner tests
a new exhibit focusing on organ and tissue donation at Liberty
Science Center in Jersey City. The interactive exhibit provides viewers
with a deeper understanding of the life-saving value of organ and
tissue donation. The NJ Sharing Network Foundation funded the
interactive exhibit to educate people about donation and encourage
more people to register as organ and tissue donors. Students at
the museum also get to view live transplants, on a large, state of
the art-theater with closed circuit television, from NJ Sharing Network hospital partners. Students frequently
express awe seeing — with their very own eyes — how transplantation brings life to patients. Participating in the
program is Dr. Stuart Geffner, who performs living kidney transplants at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, and
Dr. Margarita Camacho, who performs heart transplants at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.

Spotlight on
Team Courtney
The annual 5K Walk/Race is just one event
on the calendar for Team Courtney, which
spends the year raising money for the NJ Sharing
Network Foundation in honor of Courtney
Dayback.
The team holds its annual golf outing
the week before NJ Sharing Network’s 5K at
Pebble Creek Golf Club in Colts Neck, attended
by 125 golfers. There is the Super Bowl pool, in
which half the winnings are raised for Team
Courtney. And there’s the all-new “corn hole”
tournament in the parking lot of Jakeabob’s Bay
in Union Beach, with 50 teams competing, as
well as the Marine marathon in Washington,
D.C., in October and the memorial boat trip in
September, with 75 attendees.
All told, Team Courtney is able to raise
nearly $24,000 by the time the participants
board the team bus in Holmdel and head up the
Parkway for the annual 5K Walk and USATF
Certified Race each June.
Team Courtney is named in memory of
Courtney Dayback, who died at age 19 of a
heart attack in September 2008. Her organs
saved the lives of seven others. The team is
anchored by Courtney’s mother and father,
Linda and Dennis, as well as her three sisters,
Kristina, Anna and Diana.
Team Courtney is already focused on the
next 5K, scheduled for Sunday, June 8. The team
hopes to have 50 runners on the team bus, with
many more team members heading up on
their own.
“All of this fundraising helps us through
some difficult times and allows us to just
remember Courtney,” said her father, Dennis.
“None of this could be accomplished without
the incredible support of family and friends. I

Life Month
April is Donate Life Month, a time
to celebrate activities that support
our mission to save lives. There will
be proclamations and visits to Motor
Vehicle Agencies around the state.
April 11 is National Blue & Green Day,
which will feature a social media
photo contest. April 12 is the annual
volunteer conference and kickoff for
the 4th Annual 5K Walk and USATFCertified Race. Throughout the
month, NJ Sharing Network will
2013 Donate Life Month flag raisings abounded throughout the state.
conduct programs in conjunction
with corporate, community and
education partners around the state.
Additionally, banners will be displayed in the lobbies of our 54 hospital partners, and many will host flag
raising ceremonies, such as the one pictured here at Palisades Medical Center last year.
In recognition of National Literacy Day, McGinn Elementary
School in Scotch Plains invited Rebecca Perlman Coniglio,
a children’s author, to read Rebecca's new book, “Lily’s
Little Life Lessons: Lily’s Laces,” to third grade students.
Rebecca’s book teaches children about the life-saving gift
of organ and tissue donation. The book is available at
mascotbooks.com, amazon.com or barnesandnoble.com.
A portion of the proceeds will benefit NJ Sharing Network.
Mike Strusiak, center, a kidney/pancreas
transplant recipient, shared his personal
story and gratitude for a second chance
at life with Emmy-award winning NJTV
host Steve Adubato, left. NJ Sharing
Network president and CEO, Joe Roth
talked about the organization’s
mission to save and enhance lives.
Pictured in the center is heart recipient, Mark Meade, with his arm around

Committee. Their volunteer activity was featured on Fios1 News. Mark, a
Giants season ticket holder of 49 years, watched his beloved Giants win the
Super Bowl in 2008 from a hospital bed, near death and waiting for a heart
transplant. In June 2008, Mark received that new heart. He and his wife are
now volunteers for NJ Sharing Network, spreading the life-saving message
of organ and tissue donation and sharing how his donor’s generosity
allowed him to see the first cold weather Super Bowl played in his

Journey
of
K
Float Carries Message of Healing
Katharine Lawrence says she will always
remember the bright sunshine and 70-degree
breezes as she rode on the Donate Life Rose
Parade Float on New Year’s Day.
“You could see people on the parade route
look at us, and then realize, ‘Oh, they’re
all organ and tissue recipients!’ People kept
cheering us on,” the Asbury resident recalled.
“My arm got tired from waving, but I can't put
into words what I saw on people’s faces.”
Katharine, whose quality of life drastically
improved after a generous donor gave her the
bone to allow for major back surgery, traveled
to California to join 29 other organ, tissue and
cornea recipients from around the nation who
rode the float, which traveled through Pasadena
past tens of thousands of spectators. She was
part of the strong New Jersey contingent
participating in the parade, the culmination of
a series of local events to honor the generosity
of donors and send messages of hope and
remembrance.
Among the events were rose dedication
ceremonies with the CEOs of every NJ Sharing
Network hospital partner.
“We are so proud to be the only Organ
Procurement Organization in the nation to
have 100 percent of our hospital CEOs participate in rose dedication ceremonies,” said Joe
Roth, president and CEO of NJ Sharing
Network. “Our hospitals are critical to our lifesaving efforts; we are grateful for their messages
of hope and healing.”
The 7,740 dedicated roses — each with a
message of hope and appreciation in an
accompanying vial — created an inspiring
dedication garden on the deck of the Donate
Life Rose Parade Float. The dedicated roses
came from anyone wishing to share a message.
Some honored donors; others remembered
those who died waiting.
In preparation for the parade, Joe and others
from NJ Sharing Network traversed the state to
participate in hospital CEO rose dedication
ceremonies, including one in Princeton at the
www.NJSharingNetwork.org

New Jersey Hospital Association.
“Our hospital CEOs all support the lifesaving mission of NJ Sharing Network, and
know that nearly 5,000 people in our state are
waiting for lifesaving organs,” said Elizabeth A.
Ryan, president & CEO, New Jersey Hospital
Association. “We were all proud to send messages
of hope and remembrance and support.”
In recent months, in preparation for New
Year’s Day, there were a series of emotional
“floragraph” decorating ceremonies honoring
the legacy of donors and attracting media
coverage from both television and print outlets.
The “floragraphs” are artistic depictions of
deceased donors created with seeds, spices and
other natural materials. Eighty-one memorial
“floragraphs” were displayed on the float.
The Donate Life float has become a
tradition uniting the American transplant
community. It promotes a single message of
love, hope and compassion. This year’s float
which took home the Theme Trophy, featured
five enormous lanterns as part of a theme called
“Light Up the World.” Recipients proudly
waved from the float, displaying “floragraphs”
honoring deceased donors, while 12 living
kidney donors proudly walked alongside.
Another tissue recipient on the float
was Navy Corpsman Edward Bonfiglio, 28, of
Runnemede, now a student at Penn State.
Edward was on a routine foot patrol in
Afghanistan, on his third deployment, when his
unit was ambushed. He took a round to the
sciatic nerve in his left leg and immediately lost
all function and feeling below his knee.
Surgeons were able to allow Edward to
keep his leg by repairing the severed peripheral
nerve with an AxoGen Avance Nerve Graft.
Tissue donation is essential to the surgery.
Edward now is able to walk and jog.
In addition to the New Jersey recipients,
three “floragraphs” on the float honored people
from the state.
One honored Mike Drozd, who gave the
gift of tissue after he was killed in an automobile accident in Bergen County in 2008.
“I am so thankful to NJ Sharing Network
for sending me and giving me the opportunity
to honor my beloved husband, Mike,” Pamela
Drozd said. “Whether you were at an event like
the ‘floragraph’ family breakfast, or decorating
the float, or at the parade, there was a sense of
compassion and hope surrounding us.”
Also honored with a “floragraph” was
Todd Elliot Semon. Todd suffered a heart attack
at the age of 38. After a cycle of illness and
hospitalizations, he received a heart transplant
in 2000, which gave him 13 years of health.
When he died at age 60, he returned the gift and
became a tissue donor.
“In Pasadena, I met so many other donor
families,” said his wife, Diane. “They are true
heroes. My husband was very sick, but after the
transplant he was able to get back into life. We
are so grateful.”
Another “floragraph” honored Ena “Po-Po”
Lue, who was 68 years old when a tractor-trailer
hit the car she and her family traveled in on their
way home from the airport. After the accident,
the decision to donate was left to her four
children, who unanimously said yes.
Her daughter, Jackie Lue Raia, saw how
her mother’s gift helped save the lives of three
people and how her tissue healed 43 more. But
she also recognized how the experience helped
her own family heal from the devastating loss.
Jackie eventually joined the staff of NJ Sharing
Network to spread the mission of organ and
tissue donation.
“Seeing my mother honored on the
Donate Life Float was truly a life-changing
experience for me,” Jackie recalled. “To know
our mother’s legacy of generosity and compassion is inspiring others today keeps her alive in
our hearts.”
A Singular Rose Dedication
On New Year’s morning, Dan Sarnowski arose at 6:00 a.m. and surfed the web until he
found a link to a live KTLA television interview about the Donate Life Rose Parade Float.
The television reporter was talking to Bryan Stewart, chairman of the float committee.
He explained that each of the 7,740 roses on the float contained a special message of hope
and remembrance.
Dan, a member of the NJ Sharing Network Foundation Board, immediately
remembered the message he wrote and submitted in honor of his life companion,
Betsy Niles, a Montclair resident who became an organ donor in 2011. As Sarnowski watched,
Stewart picked a random message to read.
What happened next still boggles Dan’s mind. He sat amazed as Stewart picked his
message about Betsy as the single one to read: In Memory of Betsy Niles. She loved, gave, gifted. She gave strangers the gifts they needed: Another chance
at life. Betsy lives on in our memories and hearts; and in the lives of others who live on with her gift of life.
“I could not believe what I was hearing. I played the clip over and over several times,” Dan recalled. “I do believe it was a message from Betsy
that all is well, and that she is so honored by the dedication rose and by the work we are all doing in organ donation in her memory.”

WHO WE ARE
NJ Sharing Network is a non-profit, federally designated organ procurement organization responsible for the recovery of organs and tissue for
the nearly 5,000 New Jersey residents currently awaiting transplantation, and is part of the national recovery system, which is in place for the
more than 120,000 people on waiting lists.

Day in the Life – Wendy Rothschild
Wendy Rothschild
is proud that her Honda
Civic logs about 46,000
miles a year. From her
home in northwestern
New Jersey, Wendy is
regularly called to medical examiner offices and funeral
homes as far south as Camden.
The extensive travel is key to her 24/7 role as a
Funeral Home and Medical Examiner Liaison for NJ
Sharing Network. No two workdays are ever alike, as
Wendy is constantly meeting across the state with
dozens of funeral directors and 14 county medical
examiners, ensuring a smooth process for organ and
tissue donation from Sussex to Camden counties.
“Yes, it sounds like I have a crazy job, but it is very
satisfying,” Wendy said. “Before I joined NJ Sharing
Network four years ago, I spent 25 years as a medical
investigator. I worked closely with medical examiners,
funeral directors and NJ Sharing Network. I have such
admiration for all three groups. They are true public
servants, dealing with death and heartache with
professionalism and compassion for families.”
Wendy is one of two liaisons to funeral homes and
medical examiners for NJ Sharing Network; she works
with Patrick Sheridan. One liaison is on call for an entire
week, while the other catches up on paperwork and
other office responsibilities. Then, they switch.
Autopsies are required for all non-natural deaths,
including trauma, suicide and homicide. Successful
organ and tissue donation hinges on cooperation from
medical examiners, who must follow specific mandated
procedures in ascertaining cause of death.
Wendy helps medical examiners complete a
forensic investigation by securing X-rays, CT scans or
photographs. Or, she may be inviting a medical examiner to visit an O.R. to witness organ and tissue recovery.
“Organ and tissue donation is time sensitive;
medical examiners and funeral directors need to move
quickly and there is a lot of coordination required,” said
Wendy, noting she spends her days working remotely
and driving from place to place. “Trust is an important
key in the process, and I do what I can to make NJ
Sharing Network a trusted resource.”
When the donor family has selected a funeral
home prior to the recovery, Wendy notifies the funeral
director with the logistics of the recovery. She is also
sure to make follow-up phone calls within one week of
the funeral to ensure a consistent process.
“I have passion and a tremendous amount of
respect for my work, as well as the donor families and
their generous, life-saving gifts,” she said.

the power of donation!
