Allen Central moves up to Class 2A
EASTERN - Via Kentucky High School
Athletic Association realignment, Allen
Central has moved up to Class 2A.
The Rebels are preparing to compete
in Class 2A, District 8. In preparation
for the challenge of competing in Class
2A, District 8, which also includes
defending Region 4 champion Shelby
Valley, Prestonsburg, Betsy Layne, Leslie
County and East Ridge, Allen Central
continued to work hard in the offseason.
Key returnees for Allen Central include
linebacker Chase Soler (6-0, 215),
fullback/safety Steven Howard (5-8,
197), tailback/cornerback Jesse Brown
(5-11, 155) and quarterback/cornerback
Dylan Caudill (6-3, 225).
The Rebels compiled a 3-8 record in
2014.
“We hope to come out this year as a
much more experienced team,” Allen
Central Coach Jeremy Hall commented.
“We are returning several key starters
this season. Chase Soler will anchor
our defense at the linebacker position.

offseason workouts. He has went to
many camps to better his play at the
position. Steven Howard, a junior, will
be returning to the backfield and our
fullback spot. We had moved Steven to
one of our wings this past season and
it was just not a good fit for him. He is
now going back behind the quarterback
for some more downhill runs. Jesse

The Allen Central football program returns an experienced group on both defense and offense.
Brown will return to the backfield
as one of our leading rushers. Jesse
had a breakout season last year as a
sophomore and has worked extremely
hard this offseason. So, we expect big
things from him. We return Jordan
Patton to the backfield. He is one of our
few seniors. Jordan has been plagued by
some injuries the past two years but has
made big impacts when he is healthy.”
The Allen Central defense is expected
to be a much improved unit.

Younger Bobcats are back on the gridiron
Staff Report
BETSY LAYNE - Veteran head coach
Jonathan Parsons is guiding a much
younger Betsy Layne football team these
days. Parsons’ latest squad opened practice
shortly after the conclusion of the Kentucky
High School Athletic Association Dead
Period and has been working hard ever
since.
“I like my team,” Parsons confided.
“They are very young. I think this is the
youngest team I have ever coached. This
team will definitely make me age this year.
They work hard and we are going to try to
keep the tradition going.”
Betsy Layne ended the 2014 season
6-5. The Bobcats lost to former state powerhouse Danville in the first round of the
Class 2A Russell Athletic/KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl.
Now, Betsy Layne must replace a talented cast.
With the departure of 16 seniors, Betsy
Layne will feature several new contributors
in key positions.
“This will be a rebuilding year, but we
have some great numbers in our younger
classes,” Parsons added.
Betsy Layne must replace accomplished
quarterback Peyton Case, who passed for
2,493 yards, rushed for 1,007 yards. Case,
who made the move from receiver to quarterback, passed for 29 touchdowns and
rushed for 11 TDs during his senior season.
Betsy Layne High School
2015 Football Schedule
Betsy Layne is minus numerous offensive and defensive starters from the 2014 season.
In 2014, Betsy Layne outscored opponents 416-373. The Bobcats, however,
dropped district games to Prestonsburg,
Leslie County and Shelby Valley.
Returnees for Betsy Layne include threeyear starting linemen Kane Tackett (G/LB),
Zack Patrick (OL/DL) and Tyler Collins
(OT/DL). Jordan Kendrick (QB/S), Nathan
Collum (RB/S) and Morgan Tackett (WR/
LB) are projected to be additional leaders
for the Bobcats.
Mason Swiger (TE/LB), Kyle Watkins
freshman (WR/CB) and Lance Hall freshman (TE/DL) are among the talented
newcomers for the rebuilding Betsy Layne
football program.
Following realignment, Betsy Layne
remains in Class 2A, District 8, which will
now feature newcomers Allen Central and
East Ridge.

Blackcats reload to battle for district’s top spot
Staff Report
PRESTONSBURG - Prestonsburg fell
short in its bid to capture another Class
2A, Region 4 championship in 2014 and
now faces the challenge of reloading after
losing quarterback Jarredd Jarrell and
numerous other starters to graduation.
Dalton Frasure is poised to lead Prestonsburg in his senior season. The versatile
Frasure can lead from multiple positions
on the offensive side and also excels defensively for the Blackcats. Frasure, who has
committed to Austin Peay State University,
ranks as one of the state’s top high school
football players. Additional senior starters
back for Prestonsburg include Jordan Ray
(OL/DL), Steven Little (WR/DB), Paul
Stanley (WR/DB), Dustin Moore (OL/DL)
and Tate Greene (K).
Earlier in the preseason, sophomore
Drake Nunnery is set to help lead Prestonsburg from the quarterback position.
The Blackcats, following a loss to district rival Shelby Valley in the Class 2A,
District 4 championship game, concluded
the 2014 season 10-3. During the regularseason, Prestonsburg dropped one game in
overtime and suffered a one-point loss in
another contest.
Prestonsburg was making progress in
the preseason.
“We are progressing,” DeRossett said.
“We have good numbers and for the most
part the team is working hard. Our coach-
ing staff is doing an outstanding job. I have
been occupied with a few things this summer and it is great to show up and things
are ready. Our players are being coached
by some of the best and the instruction
they are getting will be critical each Friday
night. Most of all, thanks to our players for
getting out of bed for 6 a.m. practices this
summer and working hard to put the best
possible team on the field. With the right
attitude and work ethic, we teach our players that any goal they have in football or
life is attainable.”
Prestonsburg lost a pair of returning
starters via transfers. Senior Seth Marcum
transferred to Johnson Central. In another
offseason move, senior Chatlin Jarrell
transferred to Pikeville, Prestonsburg’s
first opponent in the 2015 season.

The Raiders attended camp
at Morehead State University in

Powell County in its only preseason scrimmage earlier in the
month.
Daniels ranked as one of the
state’s most experienced coaches
when he stepped away from the
