Spring Newsletter 2015 - Peterborough Council for Voluntary Service
Spring Newsletter 2015 Volunteer Awards 2015 ‘Unselfish and noble actions are the most radiant pages in the biography of souls’. ~David Thomas A wonderful evening celebrating the City’s amazing volunteers The 19th Volunteer Awards Evening organised by the Volunteer Centre, Peterborough Council for Voluntary Service and funded by Peterborough City Council was held on 12th March 2015 at the Town Hall. This spectacular evening gave all the organisations in Peterborough the opportunity to say a public “thank you” to their volunteers for all their hard work and commitment. PCVS and Peterborough City Council also added a public “thank you” to all those who volunteer on behalf of Peterborough and acknowledged the amazing and outstanding contribution that volunteers make to the City of Peterborough. The Mayor of Peterborough, Councillor David Over and Gillian Beasley MBE, CEO of Peterborough City Council were in attendance. Mr Cliff Walker, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire presented the certificates to the volunteers who had been nominated by their organisation. Over 100 people attended the evening and Jane Smith, Radio Cambridge, once again very kindly volunteered her evening to announce the awards for the 3rd year running. We were particularly honoured this year to have 115 (PETERBOROUGH) SQUADRON AIR TRAINING CORPS at the event who provided a guard of honour for all the attendees at the awards. One winner, Violet Kellard, was nominated for an award by Oxfam Peterborough. Violet, 84, has volunteered for Oxfam for nearly 40 years. Whilst raising 6 children, Violet still managed to contribute voluntary time to Oxfam. Violet continues to work a weekly shift and provides extra cover in emergencies in order to keep the shop open. The Peterborough Plus Directors would like to thank everyone that attended. What is Peterborough Plus? A consortium of voluntary, community and social enterprise sector (VCSE) organisations across Peterborough have joined forces to deliver a range of frontline services. The consortium operating under the title of Peterborough Plus ranges from small, grass roots organisations through to city-wide specialist service providers. What binds all of the consortium members is a commitment to addressing disadvantage and vulnerability within the local community. This initiative is being led by the Peterborough Council for Voluntary Services (PCVS). ‘The consortium’s shared vision revolves around improving the quality of life for local people, and strengthening local communities, by bringing together the diversity and expertise of the voluntary and community sector’ Leonie McCarthy, PCVS CEO. The range of services provided through the consortium includes: Provision of vocational and employability skills training programmes and work placement opportunities for young people who are not in education, employment or training (NEETs), Legal and social welfare advice. Advocacy services for vulnerable groups e.g. people with mental health problems and learning disabilities. Homes support and respite care services for people with learning disabilities and their families. Provision of practical support to carers and the people they care for, e.g. people recovering from a stroke, people with dementia etc., including carers’ break services, rehabilitation services etc. Provision of a range of services for older people, e.g. information and advice, advocacy, community development, friendship etc. Provision of opportunities for local communities to get involved in a wide range of environmental and conservation activities around the city. ‘It is the view of the consortium that these services are best delivered by organisations that have a strong presence in the city and a deep understanding of the needs of the communities of Peterborough’ Leonie McCarthy. Spring Newsletter 2015 We are pleased to announce that we are taking applications for Full and Associate members who wish to join our consortium and bid in partnership for large and medium contracts, across Peterborough and the surrounding areas. We have been working with Commissioners, local and national funders, National Council for Voluntary Organisations and the UK voluntary sector lead for Local Enterprise European Funding, to ensure that our consortium can supply high quality services through large scale contracts. We aim to deliver across a wide range of areas from poverty to arts and heritage, environment, children and young people, adult social care, community safety…….and much more. We believe that together we can learn more, progress faster and deliver better than we can apart and therefore have a duty to collaborate for the benefit of those we serve. The result will be a thriving local community in which all, including the most disadvantaged and vulnerable, are able to achieve their full potential. Want to know more? Over £367,000 has already been awarded to make charities more robust - and there is more cash to come. The Foundation’s ‘Enable’ programme was created to help small and medium-sized charities who have been hit hard by cuts and changes to funding and commissioning. ‘Enable’ is funding a range of activities related to the development and improvement of the charities helping tackle multiple disadvantage with an income of under £1m. Examples of activity currently being supported by the Foundation include: business and service developments and plans; development of monitoring systems; investigation of mergers, partnerships, shared services, contract diversification; consultancy support; quality standards; development of new income streams and enterprise. Paul Streets, Chief Executive at the Lloyds Bank Foundation explains: ‘38% of charities we surveyed about the issues they face listed capacity and capability issues as the main challenges facing their organisation. Through the ‘Enable’ programme we are helping charities build strong foundations to be able to deliver services better and attract other funding. Through Enable we are helping organisations to not just survive in these tough times but to thrive for the longer term and we encourage more small charities to apply.’ For more information on the charities funded, or the funding programmes available visit www.lloydsbankfoundation.org.uk Spring Newsletter Subscriptions 2015 Contact PCVS Leonie McCarthy—Chief Executive Officer—[email protected] Inez Smith—Deputy Chief Executive Officer—[email protected] Reception—[email protected] The Volunteer Centre—[email protected] Direct Payments—[email protected] PCVS Newsletter—[email protected] All members of staff are contactable by phone on 01733 342683 / 311016 You can find more information about Peterborough Council for Voluntary Service online at: Website—www.pcvs.co.uk Facebook— https://www.facebook.com/peterborough-cvs Twitter— @peterboroughCVS If you know of anyone in your organisation or of any other individuals or groups that would like to receive our newsletter by either post or email, please contact Amy on 01733 342683 or email: [email protected]
