February - Women`s Business Network of Peterborough
February 2008 President’s Message I hope everyone enjoyed John Stanton of The Running Room last month. He is an inspiration to us all. John’s triple win, creating a win for the customer, the company and the community, and their company motto “Success is...not knowing if you are working or playing!” is something we can all utilize! It was very exciting to present Lynn Zimmer and Alex Greene of YWCA a giant cheque in the amount of $21,675. We are truly honoured to assist a very worthy organization and the women and children it supports. This month we feature our members involved in the financial sector. What perfect timing to enquire about your RRSP contributions or tax tips. Our speaker this month will be Patricia Brusha, co-founder of Couple of Chicks.Com. Patricia will be speaking to us on internet marketing techniques. Today, with the internet being such an integral part of our businesses, we expect everyone will be able to benefit from Patricia’s expertise. Please remember to make the most of the networking opportunities available to you. Kathryn Fanning is the board member to contact for newsletter inserts or member news blurbs or contact Patti Clark to book a booth. Remember to sign up early for “Toonie Talk”. It is restricted to the first ten members. See you February 6th. Happy Networking, Colleen Hoggarth February 6th, 2008 Patricia Brusha Couple of Chicks.Com Patricia Brusha is the co-founder of “Couple of Chicks.Com” an Internet Marketing, Distribution & Revenue Measurement Company. Small Businesses Share 5 Common Mistakes; Too Much Ego Reprinted from The National Post 2007 Parts 1, 2 & 3 Vancouver - You’ve built a better mousetrap but the world isn’t beating a path to your door. What’s gone wrong? People who have made careers working with small business owners say they see the same mistakes preventing entrepreneurs from reaching their full potential. [email protected] Mistake #1 Too much entrepreneurial ego. Small business owners, especially home-based and those in their startup years, have a tendency to try to do everything themselves, says Tina Gilbert, chief executive of Small Business BC. “We sometimes call it the entrepreneurial ego -- not necessarily recognizing when they need to bring in external expertise.” Trying to be the bookkeeper, the IT support and the communications manager will keep you away from your core responsibilities and ultimately damage profitability and growth. Mistake #2 Build it and they will come. The world may need your product or service but will they buy it? Failure to conduct thorough market research is the leading cause of small business failure, says Dean Barbour, self-employment manager at Vancouverbased Westcoast Community Enterprise, part of a federally funded program to help budding entrepreneurs. He says the four key elements of market research are: know your industry, know your market, know your competition and know your target audience. Who is taking care of YOU? Betty Halman-Plumley 876-1282 ext. 256 [email protected] Mistake #3 Sticking to your guns. The road to ruin is failing to review your business plan after a year or two to see if you are meeting your goals, says Wellington Holbrook, senior vice-president with the Business Development Bank of Canada. “We often see entrepreneurs who stick to an idea too passionately because they believe it is the right idea,” he said. “Sometimes being open to change, or adjusting, amending or reinventing the way an idea can be utilized, can make them more successful.” Watch for the March WBN newsletter for the continuation of this article New Member Meeting – Date & Location Change February 13th, Holiday Inn, 5:30-6:30 We welcome all new members to a fun and informative evening with your board members on Wednesday, February 13th, 5:30 p.m. in the Gallery room at Holiday Inn Peterborough Waterfront.
