progress fiscal year report 2010 progress on strategic goals in fye 2010 We increased our service to the state through free or affordable access: • We distributed $125,000 in free admission to schools in the most economically disadvantaged areas of the state. • With the support of the Charleston Gazette, we launched our Access to Excitement membership program, which currently provides reduced admission to more than 60 low-income families. That’s 60+ WV families that now have the chance to spend quality time together at the Clay Center on their own schedules and without the worry of affordability. • We saw increased participation in all of our FREE programming, including Second Saturday at Capitol Market – Held each month between 10 am and noon, Second Saturdays feature a fun-filled art or science activity, for whole family and a chance to see all that Capitol Market has to offer. Activities are ongoing and free to the general public and have attracted more than 220 people in a very short time. Science Café at Taylor Books – In this all-new program, guest presenters cover a variety of science-related topics in an open forum, with plenty of time for discussion and Q & A. In its early stages, Science Café brought in more than 120 people. Lunchtime lectures – This free monthly lecture series features community presenters and a wide clay center’s 10-year strategic goals • to serve all of WV through free and affordable access • to bring our mission to communities throughout the state • to provide world-class programming • to form strategic alliances • to secure our financial future We love everything, but a favorite area of mine to go to is the Gizmo Factory, specifically the Lego Table. My mom, who has some dementia, enjoys building there as much as my son. It is a blessing to see them do this together. Mary, South Charleston WV Access to Excitement membership program participant We brought programs to communities throughout the state: •A group of fifteen teachers from seven WV counties (Putnam, Marion, Monongalia, Jackson, Wood, Kanawha and Boone) participated in the Center’s sixth Teacher Cadre – a three-day educator’s symposium, wherein board certified and masters level teachers gathered to develop the curriculum and identify 21st Century Learning Content Standards for each grade level for the Center’s “Classroom in the Clay Center” performances for elementary, middle and high school students. Teachers in the Cadre receive funding through the program to bring their students to at least one performance ($700 toward admission costs). •We increased our community outreach efforts, expanding our programming to Putnam, Wood, Jackson, Raleigh, Lewis and Cabell counties, as well as to Galia County in Ohio. •We presented Verizon distance learning programs in conjunction with the Lost Kingdoms of the Nile exhibit in Wood and Nicholas counties. •More than 650 students in Clay, Lincoln, Mason, Mingo and inner city Kanawha Counties received free instruments and music lessons. WEST VIRGINIA COUNTIES CURRENTLY SERVED COUNTIES SERVED OTHER COUNTIES We provided world-class programming: •Thanks to more than $200,000 in grants and sponsorship, we were able to present Lost Kingdoms of the Nile: Nubian Treasures from the Museum of Fine Arts – Boston and its related programming to thousands of children and adults: We introduced Nubian culture to 44,600 individuals, including 17,300 school children. We provided integrated programming throughout the Clay Center, including lectures, workshops for both adults and children, planetarium shows, films, performances by Habib Koité and Charlotte Blake Alston and multidisciplinary curricula. •We presented an array of world class performances that included something for every taste and age group. Renowned performers included Harry Connick, Jr., Chicago, Wayne Newton, Drive by Truckers, Dr. John & the Lower 911, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Streb Extreme Dance Company, Habib Koité and Bamada, Cherryholmes and Ralph Stanley & the Clinch Mountain Boys. •Our Woody Hawley singer/songwriter series and Broadway series attracted more than 908 patrons. We formed strategic alliances: •We partnered with Charleston Light Opera Guild to co-present a very successful run of Peter Pan, including two sold-out Classroom in the Clay Center school performances. •We formed several new partnerships and alliances in conjunction with the Lost Kingdoms of the Nile exhibit, including with WV State Archaeological Society, WV Division of Culture and History, WV Storytellers Guild and the India Center in South Charleston. •We worked with Charleston Catholic High School to organize and present the art exhibit – Wildly Wonderful and Wonderfully Wild – which was conceptualized and created by senior high school students under the direction of art teacher Rebecca Burch. •We partnered with teachers from Boone, Putnam, Kanawha, Jackson, Wood, Marion and Monongalia counties on curriculum development. •Other partnerships included University of Charleston Marshall University Graduate School Engineers Without Borders WV State Parks (Kanawha State Forest) •We partnered with 42 sponsors who provided the underwriting support that allowed us to present our programs, and we provided the sponsors with valuable public relations and marketing benefits throughout the region. We made great strides in achieving financial security: •We overcame a $324,000 projected deficit and ended the year with a small surplus. We met our contributed operating income goal. We controlled operating expenses. We exceeded our earned income goal: Per capita income for admissions exceeded projections. Performance ticket sales exceeded projections, not only for the headliner performances but also the season performers, Woody Hawley Concert series and Broadway. •And last, but certainly not least, we increased our endowment by $1.5 million this year, bringing the value of the Clay Center’s permanent endowment to $26,051,222, as of June 30, 2010. thank you To our many partners and friends, our heartfelt thanks. You are a hero to the thousands of West Virginians who visit us each year. Endowment The generous Corporation, Foundation and Individual donors listed here have made gifts of $1,000 or more to the Clay Center’s permanent endowment that will help eliminate museum admission fees for school groups, enhance our educational programs and performances and broaden our community outreach program to bring the enjoyment and wonder of the arts and sciences to the underserved throughout our region.
