Last Friday, students swapped their school skirts and trousers for jeans in support of Jeans for Genes
Day. The initiative raises funds for research into birth defects and childhood disease. The students'
efforts helped to raise $1,500.
Thank you to Mr Steve Petherick, Mrs Maree Schabe and Ms Ashleigh Waters for helping with
promotion and collections.

Jewellery
The general belief is that jewellery worn to
school is for ‘function not fashion’. Pearls,
Euroballs, diamantes etc will be confiscated and
passed onto the Year Level Coordinator. Only the
following items will be allowed:
• a watch;
• a gold or silver chain holding a cross which
cannot be seen; and
• girls only may wear a pair of small plain gold
or silver matching studs/sleepers; only one
per ear and in the lower part of the lobe.
The focus is on function, not fashion. Jewellery
should not create a safety concern.
crops to grow and for the animals to drink. They
know due to their daily experience that you
are dependent on the one who grants it all. Yes,
what we can do is to pray for what is needed
daily, and then to wait, to hope and to trust that
God in his mercy will grant it to us – and receive
it as a gift with thanksgiving.
When Martin Luther reflected on the Lord’s
Prayer, he commented on the petition “Give us
our daily bread” and said that God would give us
our daily bread even without us asking for it or
deserving it. But he would like us to acknowledge
this and receive it with thanksgiving.
Then he continues:
Hair
Piercings
What is meant by daily bread? Daily bread
includes everything needed for this life, such
as food, drink, clothing, shoes, house, home,
fields, cattle, money, goods, God-fearing spouse
and children, faithful servants and rulers, good
government, good weather, peace, health, order,
honor, true friends, good neighbours, and the like.
Students are to keep their hair neat, clean and
tidy.
Students are not to have any body piercing or
tattooing that is visible and draws attention.
Nose piercing, multiple ear piercings and any
other facial piercing are not acceptable under
any circumstances at St Peters.
Today we could probably add: a good
education, employment, Internet access, great
communication skills to further relationships and
others you may think of as necessary to make it
well through the day.
Clear studs are not to be worn.
For Junior School Uniform Requirements and
Middle School Uniform Requirements, please
refer to the relevant Parent Handbook.
To not take for granted what we have, but to
pray that God may grant us to look at what we
have with grateful hearts, giving thanks daily for
what we have received and – like the farmers –
grow and share it with others. Living with
gratitude allows us to grasp the mystery of that
gospel truth: the s/he who shares with others
will receive abundantly, joy, respect, faithful
friends and all which allows living a meaningful
in life – thanks to God!
Lisa Delaney, Deputy Head of College
Chaplain Silke Moolman
Extreme haircuts and hairstyles are not allowed.
Hair is to be a natural colour. Hair should
be brushed or combed to maintain a neat

• Sideburns are not permitted past the bottom

Make-Up
Students are not to wear any make-up unless
approval has been granted. Documentation from
a medical practitioner may be required.
If a student or family wishes to discuss this
requirement for cultural reasons they may do
so through the relevant channels although it is
very unlikely that the College will deviate from
this code.

Work Experience
It is St Peters policy that students attend work experience in College holiday periods. It can be
appreciated that the mandated processes of entering into a Work Experience Agreement to ensure
WorkCover insurance and the need for the College to communicate with the work experience
provider and respond to queries takes time. Because of this it may not be possible for College staff to
satisfactorily complete the processing of any work experience proposal if it is received less than one
week before teachers conclude duty at the end of any term. For more information regarding student
work experience please access information from the Careers Portal under ‘Work Experience’ or

Last Wednesday, we conducted our first
Community Focus Day for Semester 2. A mouthwatering array of cakes and buns was on offer
at the bake sale in an effort to fundraise for the
2015 building project in Cambodia. A meat tray
was also raffled. In total, $900 was raised.
Thank you to everyone who supported this event.
The students will continue to raise funds until the
end of year.
Alongside those who fundraised for the
Cambodia project, the Social Justice Group had a stall of lollies, chips and icy poles in aid of the 40
hour famine (14 – 16 August). All money raised will be put towards the $10,000 goal.

Staffing News
It is with great pleasure that I can announce that Ms Sally Snow has been appointed to the role of
class teacher for 2A. Ms Snow is an experienced early childhood specialist and comes to St Peters
with local and international experience, most recently teaching at the Canadian International School
in Phnom Penh. She has already met her class and will continue to work with Mrs King to ensure a
smooth transition for the children. We sincerely thank Mrs King for returning from leave to take the
class while the recruitment process took place and know that she has done an amazing job.

Another exciting announcement is to inform the community that our wonderful Mrs Yorke is due
to have her first child early next year. This is Mrs Yorke’s sixth year at the College and in that time
she has been a class teacher, pastoral care leader and, most recently the Deputy Head of the Junior
School. While I am sure you will agree that Jackie will be dearly missed in our community as she
takes her maternity leave, we must also wish her all the best as she takes on another amazing
and important role – that of a mother. There will be further opportunities to formally thank Jackie
towards the end of the year, but I am sure you will join in me to wish Jackie and her husband, Steve
all the very best as they navigate this new aspect of the lives.
Prep – Year 3 Sports Day
Many thanks must go to everyone who organised and supported our annual P-3 sports carnival
held last Thursday. Particular thanks must go to Mr Cameron Glass, Mrs Sally Hannah and Mr Peter
Dawson for their preparation of the students in regular classes as well as organising the events and
structure of the day. We also commend the support of a number of Middle School captains who
helped on the day. Wonderful support from parents ensured the children felt very special.
Bush Dance Committee Meeting
Much work has begun from our first
Bush Dance meeting this term. The
logo has been designed, stalls have
been allocated to year levels, parents
have agreed to be their year level
representatives and much of the
background work is already in the
pipeline. Click here for an outline of

Jeans for Genes Day
Last Friday the College
recognised Jeans for
Genes Day which is a
national day when people
wear their jeans to raise
much-needed funds
for research into birth
defects and diseases
such as cancer, epilepsy, and a range of genetic
disorders. Every dollar raised on the day helps
scientists at Children’s Medical Research Institute
discover treatments and cures, to give every
child the opportunity to live a long and healthy
life. It was great to see so many students in the
Junior School participate and support this great
cause to help scientists with their research.
Thank you!

Books Light Up Our World
This year’s
Children’s Book
Week theme is
‘Books Light Up
Our World’. I
asked Years 5-7
staff to reflect on which book ‘lit up their world’
during their childhood. Here are some of their
responses:
• Mrs O’Kane - Great Expectations by Charles
Dickens;
• Mr Schmidt – The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S.
Lewis – all of them!
• Mr Pitura – I am David by Ann Holm;
• Mrs Curtin – The Wishing Chair by Enid Blyton;
• Mr Robin – Hatchet by Gary Paulsen;

Safety Truck Visits St Peters
Thank you to the Voorhoeve family for arranging
for the trucking industry's Safety Truck to visit
the college on Monday and Tuesday. Junior
and Middle School students and staff had the
opportunity to visit and learn some important
tips about road safety, especially when trucks
are involved. Students attended a brief talk
about Road Safety, had an opportunity to sit in
the driver's seat and then visit the interactive
display in the trailer section before receiving
a sample bag with goodies reminding them of
the importance of road safety. The Safety Truck
travels to many different schools, shows and other
displays all around Australia delivering a very
important message.
The Books Rock Café
Next week’s guests at The Books Rock Café are
Selena Song (6A) and Victoria Holland (6A).
Congratulations. We’ll see you on Wednesday at

Last week, our students were lucky enough to
receive a visit from Steven Herrick, an award
winning author who wrote Pookie Aleera Is Not
My Boyfriend. After studying this novel earlier
in the year, the students were exited to meet
Steven and ask as many interesting questions
as they could. It was a wonderful morning, as
Steven entertained everyone by reading some of
his own poems and sharing some useful tips for
successful writing.
On Friday, Middle School students also took part
in Jeans for Genes day. Everyone enjoyed being
given the opportunity to come to school wearing
jeans for the day, and it was great to be able to
raise money for an important cause. Thank you
to the parents and caregivers for your support in
raising money for this charity.
In our Unit Of Inquiry (UOI), “Where We Are

completed their migrant stories. They are now
in the process of preparing an oral presentation

where they will be sharing the life story of their
chosen person in a unique and creative way. Oral
presentations will begin at the end of the week.
The students have been putting in an impressive
effort to keep their locker area clean and tidy
which has been wonderful to see. Our focus
at the moment in Year 6 is still on developing
individual organisational routines and keeping

This weekend, support St Peters’ teams
competing at the Queensland State RoboCup

competition that requires students to analyse
a potential future problem and analyse and
develop solutions. Teams from Years 4 – 11
took part in the qualifying booklet’, so it was
important that these Year 9 teams could also
compete. Students at Ironbark were reunited
for the two hours of the competition in order to
qualify for the national competition.
We look forward to feedback from the markers

School with the commencement of Year 12 IB
mock exams and preparations for Year 12 QCAA
Queensland Core Skills (QCS) tests in Week 8.
QTAC applications opened last week and I know
many Year 12 students are busy planning their
applications for tertiary study. Please remember
that parents and students can arrange to meet
with Mrs Turnbull or Mrs Estevao if they are
having any difficulties with QTAC applications.
Leadership
Leadership positions for 2016 are under
consideration. This week, Year 11 students
heard speeches from students who have been
short-listed for School Captain positions, and
cast their votes. School Captain positions will
be announced at assembly next week and
other leadership positions will be announced in
early September.
Pastoral Care
Last semester, Mr David Rushmore and I met
with form class teachers to gain feedback on the
pastoral care offered in the Senior School. We
will form a committee of staff who are interested
in shaping future pastoral care offerings. This
group will meet next Monday afternoon. I invite
parents to contribute feedback on pastoral care.
I am happy to receive information in writing

THE ARTS
Beach comes to VAPar this Saturday
Beach by Timothy Daly – Saturday 15 August, 6.30pm
On Monday night, the cast of Beach spent two hours familiarising themselves with the PAC
auditorium stage in a technical and lighting rehearsal. Students followed cues by either music,
dialogue or scene changes on the back cyclorama.
They met Maggie May, this stage manager. Former student, Lachlan Townsend ( 2013) from BCL
has designed the lighting and Freddy Komp has programmed the set design and music cues. It is an
exciting time for students, who have dedicated many hours to bringing their characters to life.
We look forward to performing for you on Saturday. Click here to book.

AIC Basketball and Tennis
Round 3 fixtures were played last weekend against St Laurence’s College. Our 11A’s Basketball team
continued their impressive run with a solid win over tough opposition. It was also pleasing to see
the St Peters 4ths and 10B’s celebrate their first wins for the season. Well done boys. To our Junior
basketballers - although results have not gone our way for the start of the season, your improvement
in recent weeks has been noticed by coaches and parents alike. I commend your hard work and
encourage you to keep attending training sessions, take on the advice of your coaches and celebrate
the improvements we are seeing each week.
Round 3 action on the tennis court was a success, with St Peters winning 10 of the 14 grades and
the overall aggregate against St Laurences. A special mention must go to the 1st IV, 2nds, 3rds, 11A,
9A, 9B, 8A, & 8B teams who remain undefeated going in to the bye this weekend. I look forward to
all teams continuing their hard work on the practice courts and sharing further successes for the
remainder of the season.

sport on 14/15 August. AIC Tennis and Basketball will return for Round 4 on 21/22 August.
Enjoy the weekend off, and I look forward to all St Peters players returning with a renewed energy to
compete fiercely for the remainder of the season.

The AIC Cross Country Championships took place on Wednesday 5 August at Limestone Park, Ipswich.
With the inclusion of our Years 5 and 6 runners, the St Peters army of runners was the largest team
we have ever taken to the carnival – a great achievement in itself. To make our school even prouder,
our students performed extremely well and many finished in the top 20 of their age groups amongst
a very high standard of competition. The table below recognises some of our highest individual
achievers. A special congratulations must go to our Under 13 age group who finished in sixth place,
our Under 15 Age group (that included some under 14 students) who finished in fourth place, and
our Open age group who finished third. With these combinations of results St Peters finished in
seventh place overall – a fantastic achievement and the best overall placing we have reached in 6
years! Well done to our entire squad of runners and thank you to the coaches and coordinators for
their efforts throughout the season. We look forward to all boys competing again next year and hope
that St Peters can achieve an even stronger overall placing in the AIC Championship.

Senior Schools Cup – Volleyball
A team of 37 St Peters students from Years 9-12 travelled to Toowoomba to compete in the
Queensland Senior Schools Cup Volleyball Competition last Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This
competition provided many of our younger students their first opportunity to participate in a formal
competition outside the AIC season, and it was fantastic to see our students making the most of
match experience against other colleges in Queensland. Well done to all young men who proudly
represented St Peters both on and off the court. We secured some well-deserved victories on the
final day and now look forward to these students committing to the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup
in Melbourne at the end of the year. More details to come. Finally, a big thank you to Todd Rankin,
Mike Rickerby, Mark Holman and coaches for their organisation, coaching and support.
Term 3 Sport Clashes
As we move further into Term 3, students and parents are encouraged to continue communication
with relevant coordinators and coaches as there is still a strong chance of sporting and academic
‘clashes’ occurring at this time. With Basketball, Tennis, and pre-season Athletics all underway,
students may find that they have overlapping commitments and are reminded to discuss any issues
with their coordinator ahead of time so that arrangements can be made to best accommodate
everyone. If there are any concerns, please come to Sports House and see Mr Bradforde – the sports
team are here to support all boys in their sporting pursuits.

With seven sports on for girls last week, it certainly is a busy time of year and we would like to thank
all girls for their continued commitment. Congratulations to the Rhythmic Gymnastics team who
showed a great spirit and sportsmanship on Friday at their final competition. We were also very
pleased with the numbers who turned out for our first Athletics Meet last Friday night and hope
these numbers continue to grow over the coming weeks as team selection starts to take shape.
Well done to all of our teams and we wish you another wonderful week of sport.

• Year 11 sculler, Skye Yeaman -third
• Year 10 1st 4x – second

Well done to all girls who came to our first meet
out at UQ on Friday night. We hope to see you
again this week for our second meet. Please
remember to sign up using the links provided
by Mr Ibrahim in the email he sends each week.
This helps you secure a spot on the bus to ensure
we have enough seats for everyone and also
allows you to sign up for individual events. It is
important to get in early as for a lot of the field
events there is a restriction of two competitors
per age group each week.
A reminder that UQ is booked so for next
Monday, 17 August, we will train at St Peters.
Please meet outside Café 45 before making
your way to your event. For girls wishing to
be considered for a relay spot this season
please make sure you attend Sprints training
and run 100m at the Friday night meets. This
year we hope to know our relay teams by the
end of Term 3 to allow some solid practice of
change overs.
Now that Rhythmic Gymnastics is over we
expect to see more girls both on a Wednesday
afternoon and on Friday night. It is not too late
to start!
Good luck this Friday and we hope you have
another fantastic night out at UQ.

Congratulations to our Rhythmic Gymnastics
team that competed at MBC last Friday. St
Peters always fields the biggest team at this
competition and this year was no different with
all gymnasts doing the school proud. All results
improved on last year and the girls were inspiring
with their sportsmanship and spirit. It was a long
day finishing at the Awards Ceremony 7.30pm
and many of these girls still turned up at their
other sports on Saturday. Well done to all of you
for such a fabulous effort and we look forward to
having you involved again next year.
We also thank Mrs Gabrielle Baker for the
tireless hours she has put in to this sport over
the season. Thanks also to the coaching staff for
making the experience so enjoyable for our girls.
It is great to see so many old St Peters gymnasts
still part of the program.

Students will take part in a different
activity for each of the first four weeks of
Term 1 and Term 2.
A training schedule will be sent to all students who are selected on the team. Only selected students
