It appears the worst kept secret
of the 2013 political season is out,
but not officially.
Supporters of State Sen. Leticia
Van de Putte received the following e-mail Friday that the San
Antonio lawmaker had reached
a decision on whether she would
run for Lt. Governor in the next
General Election and in doing so
the Democratic Party would be led
by she and Texas Senate colleague,
Wendy Davis.
Dear Friend,
As a mother, grandmother, and
fifth generation Texan, nothing
is more important to me than my
family and the great state of Texas.
I understand that the future
prosperity of Texas families is dependent upon the path we choose
to take today. So after much prayer,
reflection and discussion with my
family and friends, I’m ready to

know what is next for me.

It’s no secret that she’s been
courted by many to run for the
state’s second highest office and
it seems that’s what’s going to
happen
The viability of her name on
the ticket has been at the heart of
the matter. Something that Retired
UTSA Associate Professor of
Political Philosophy and Urban
Politics, Dr. Rudolfo Rosales has
been thinking about since the possibility surfaced.
“I think that the advantage Sen.
Van de Putte will bring is visibility
to one of the most significant voting
blocks in Texas (Latinos) that has
not participated to its potential,”
Rosales began in the contradicting
statement. “That’s kind of almost
an understatement, Chihuahua, we
don’t even go out to vote para nada,
but we’re getting there.”

militar en Utica, Nueva York, iba
junto con su esposa y su hijo a

Fue entonces cuando un empleado de Beam Inc., patrocinador de
la organización, pagó las compras
de la familia, que tenían un costo
de $12.
Desde entonces el programa

the walk out she coordinated (the
2003 redistricting issue). He said
she’s pretty tough and she knows
how to play the compromise game,
plus she also knows how to take a
stand when she has to.

There will also be a Selena Tribute hosted by her father Abraham,
husband Chris Perez and brother
AB. The tribute to the fallen star
is the first of its kind and propor-
tion. According to Ramirez, it’s
going to be a very emotional
presentation.
The concert happens Saturday
November 23, 2013 at the Freeman Coliseum. Tickets begin at
$15 and VIP is $150 with a reception prior to the concert, ground
level seating and a meet and greet
with all the performers in the show.

Por qué el fútbol no importa

Entre las cosas menos importantes de la vida, el fútbol es la
más importante para millones de
fanáticos en todo el mundo. Pero
la verdad es que no tiene la menor
importancia si un equipo gana
o pierde, si un país califica para
el Mundial, o si se lastima uno
de sus principales jugadores. La
relevancia del fútbol es mínima.
Un gol no cambia el mundo. Ni
dos, tres o 30.
Sin embargo, en estos días
parecería que lo único importante
en México y Uruguay es el fútbol. Sus equipos se enfrentan en
repechaje contra Nueva Zelanda y
Jordania, respectivamente, su pase
al Mundial de Brasil el próximo
año. Y cuando juega “la selección”
el país se paraliza.
No importa que México y Uruguay tengan en estos momentos
equipos tan malos que no merecen
calificar al Mundial. Digamos la
verdad: las eliminatorias mundia
listas están hechas para favorecer
la clasificación de ciertos equipos,
incluyendo al de México. ¿Cómo
puede calificar al Mundial un equipo como México que ha perdido la
mayoría de sus juegos? Con ayuda
de la FIFA, por supuesto.
No importa que la selección
mexicana haya cambiado de entrenadores como de camisetas
sudadas. Está claro que hay un
problema de fondo. Hay veces
que los equipos de fútbol reflejan
la desesperanza de su país y, en el
caso de México, su selección es su
espejo: carente de liderazgo, sin
estilo ni dirección, improvisada,
llena de excusas y buscando
milagritos en plegarias y en el
extranjero.
Algo está podrido en el fútbol mexicano. México ganó las
Olimpíadas en el 2012 y su equipo
de menores de 17 años pasó a la
final en el Mundial juvenil. Pero
es imposible no ver a la selección
nacional como un gran fracaso.
Esa impotencia en la cancha se
transmite hasta las gradas.
Es vergonzoso, machista y
estúpido escuchar en el estadio
Azteca de la ciudad de México el
grito de “****to” de los pulmones
de los seguidores de la selección
mexicana cada vez que despega
el balón del área chica un equipo
rival. Es un grito cargado de frustración y de los prejuicios más
dolorosos del México intolerante.
Sorprende escucharlo en una de las
ciudades más liberales del planeta.
Es un grito que, supuestamente,
debería ayudar en el ánimo de
la selección mexicana pero que,
por el contrario, la entierra más
y la hace cómplice de lo peor de
México. Si no puedes ganar, entonces insulta y descalifica.
Ese odio futbolero, desde luego,
no es exclusivo de México. Hace
unos meses fui a ver un juego al
estadio de Roma donde el equipo
local se enfrentaba al Génova,
Italia. Los pocos fanáticos del
Génova tuvieron que ser protegidos por decenas de policías y no
llevaban la camiseta de su equipo
para que, a la salida, no fueran
atacados por las turbas del Roma.
Esa violencia en el fútbol italiano (y en el británico, entre muchos
otros) refleja serias divisiones
económicas y problemas sociales
en una Europa que no acaba de
integrarse, aunque la propaganda
de los diplomáticos de la Unión
Europea diga otra cosa. El fútbol
no se da en un vacío. A veces
destaca lo mejor de una cultura,
como los triunfos de España en la
última Copa del Mundo en 2010;
otras, es un triste ejemplo de todo
lo que no funciona en un país,
como en México e Italia.
El fútbol, durante más de cinco
décadas, me ha hecho muy feliz.
De niño quería meter goles como
Enrique Borja, seguía a los Pumas
con el alma (y todavía lo hago),
juego – vendado y oliendo a Bengay – los sábados por la mañana,
he ido a cuatro mundiales, y me
preparo para ir al de Brasil. Le he
transmitido esta fiebre futbolera a
mi hijo Nicolás, quien es mucho
mejor que yo. Pero eso es todo.
El fútbol es fútbol. Y ya. Deporte, afición, negocio, entretenimiento, fanatismo, nacionalismo
idiota – todo nacionalismo es
idiota ¿no? – pero al final de cuentas se trata sólo de 22 jugadores
tratando de meter una pelota en
una portería. Nada más.
El fútbol es más circo que el
circo y, muchas veces, es rico
perderse en esa tonta ilusión de
que es el mismísimo centro del
mundo. Pero 90 minutos después
se desinfla la pretensión de rele
vancia, todo cae por su peso en su
lugar y el fútbol vuelve a ocupar
su sitio entre las cosas menos importantes de la vida.

Celebrating Rex Neal Van de Putte
State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte
Last week, at Morgan’s Wonderland, my family and I hosted
an event that was both heartbreaking and joyous.
Heartbreaking, because it fell
on the first birthday of our grandson — and he wasn’t there to
celebrate it. Tragically, our dear
Rex Neal Van de Putte passed
away in his sleep on May 7, less
than half a year after birth.
The cause of death was SIDS
— Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Which is to say, we don’t
really know what caused him
to become an angel. My friends
at Southwest SIDS Research
Institute (SWSIDS) tell us that
SIDS “is defined as the sudden
death of an infant less than 1 year
of age that cannot be explained
after a thorough investigation is
conducted, including a complete
autopsy, examination of the death
scene, and review of the clinical
history.”
These unexplained deaths are
terrible — according to the U.S.
Centers for Disease Control,
SIDS is the leading cause of death
among infants 1-12 months of
age and is the third leading cause
overall of infant mortality in the
United States. These babies ap-
pear to be perfectly happy and
healthy before their unexpected
deaths. However, SWSIDS is
working to uncover the mystery
of SIDS and prevent it.
And that’s why Saturday was
also joyous. Rex’s parents — my
son Gregory and daughter-in-law
Samantha — wanted something
proactive and positive to result
from his passing, so we, along
with family and friends, organized the First Annual Walk/Run
for Rex at Morgan’s Wonderland
to raise money for SWSIDS so
it can continue its invaluable
research. Thanks so much to La
Prensa for helping us promote it!

While SIDS’s causes are still
being studied, it’s believed that
the infant’s sleeping position or
sleeping environment may be
factors. The American Academy
of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends
infants sleep on their backs on a
firm sleep surface. With implementation of the “Back to Sleep”
campaign in the 1990s, which
encouraged back-sleeping, the
rate of SIDS deaths decreased
from 1.25 per 1,000 live births
when SWSIDS was founded in
1984, to 0.5 per 1,000 live births
in the early 2000s.
Tragically, however, another
sub-category of sudden unexpected infant death has quadrupled
since the 1980s — accidental
suffocation of babies when parents or caretakers sleep cuddled
up to them (“co-sleeping.”) A
co-sleeping baby death occurs
in Texas every two days. Words
cannot adequately describe the
impact on these families when
they realize that their very desire
to cuddle and sleep with their
infant contributed to their baby’s
loss. These deaths, occurring in
unsafe sleep environments, are
potentially preventable.
Other recommendations from
the AAP that could possibly
prevent SIDS include breastfeeding, room-sharing without
bed-sharing, routine immunization, consideration of the use of
a pacifier, and avoidance of soft
bedding (such as bumper pads,
blankets, stuffed animals). The
AAP also warns against overheating and exposure to tobacco
smoke, alcohol, and illicit drugs.
The AAP does not recommend
any bed-sharing situation in the
hospital or at home as safe.
The Southwest SIDS Research
Institute, a 501(C)(3) United Way
agency, was founded 30 years ago
to end unexpected infant mortality through education, support,
medical services and research.
Programs are offered on a sliding scale basis or free of charge.
Through the A.C.C.E.S.S. (All
Children Can Enjoy Safe Sleep)
Program, qualifying families
may obtain a free Pack ‘N Play so
that they can provide a safe sleep
environment for their new baby.
Infant CPR classes are now being
offered. SWSIDS also has a free
speaker’s bureau.

Be a better neighbor: Why District 8 matters

“Be a better neighbor.” That’s
the slogan of a nationwide, grassroots movement at the heart of
Frank Capra’s lesser known
classic “Meet John Doe,” starring
Gary Cooper. In cities across the
country, John Willoughby (Cooper) delivers speeches encouraging people to get out into the
community, meet their neighbors,
and work together.
Over the past 18 months, while
walking across District 8 as
a candidate and now as a city
councilman, that message has
inspired me. It’s a fact of life that,
unlike generations past, we just
don’t know our neighbors well
anymore. The old “going over
to borrow a cup of sugar” seems
rare these days. In my opinion,
it’s no coincidence that, on a
national level, representatives
don’t cooperate to get the basic
business done– they don’t attempt to understand each other’s
constituencies and they lack the
willpower required to reach common ground on important issues.
Yet few would argue that our
nation’s future is tied to an ability to work together again. On
paper, the United States is growing increasingly diverse, just like
our city of San Antonio. And
the epicenter of that growth is
here in District 8. Take a look at
the demographics of the district:
43 percent Hispanic, 42 percent
White, seven percent Asian, five
percent Black. On political measures, we’ve seen recent elections
split District 8 almost uniformly
in half, while on socioeconomic
scales, the area has some of the
richest – and some of the poorest –
neighborhoods to be found in the
city, with everything in between.
Religion? On a recent walk near
an older District 8 neighborhood,
I passed by a Catholic church,
a mosque, a reformed church, a
Buddhist temple, a Sikh temple,
a Chinese Baptist church, and a
Jehovah’s Witness center. All
within roughly two square miles.
It’s right here in District 8
where we can see the future of
the city – perhaps even the future
of our country – and that’s why I
think it has been vital, as a public
servant, to have an honest, balanced dialogue on the significant
challenges facing our San Antonio, from water to infrastructure
to public safety to jobs. That’s
also why it has been important
to focus on working with all
neighbors, regardless of party,
geography or ideology.
I believe things that make San
Antonio a center for opportunity
are also the things that will pose
the greatest challenges to us in the
coming years: booming popula-
tion growth, affordable cost of
living, an increasingly diversified
economy, and an enviable natural
environment. Civic leaders must
work together to focus San Antonio’s growth so that it serves
the best interests of you and your
neighbors. We simply cannot afford any insider politics, and we
must hold our public officials,
including me, accountable to
improving the quality of life for
everyone.
The population of San Antonio
has increased by 16 percent since
2000. In District 8, where have we
some of the most congested roads
in the city, the growth rate was
more than twice that: 33 percent.
With over 40,000 more people
living in District 8 over the past
decade, city services have been
strained. Demand on basic services will increase as will the less
desirable symptoms of growth if
unaddressed.
People flock to and stay in
San Antonio In part because of
the affordable cost of living, and
it will be ever more difficult to
protect it if we aren’t mindful of
it now. Whether you are on a fixed
income or a young person ready
to start a career (and a family),
the promise of San Antonio is
that, here, you can live well. In
District 8, we are home to some
of the most beautiful and highly
desirable residential and retire-
ment communities, high density
multi-family developments, and
everything in between. While San
Antonio’s tax rate has declined
over the last 20 years, utility
and service fees are on the rise,
so civic leaders should demand
transparency and accountability
from the public sector agencies.
We must manage our finances
the same way any smart family
would: spend within our means
and take measures to protect and
grow our income. It will take
smart, focused investments for
our future and disciplined spending that benefits the average
District 8 family.
The average family in San Antonio, no matter the area, benefits
from the District 8 economy.
That’s because it is also the site
of significant economic drivers
and some of the largest employers
of the city, including the South
Texas Medical Center, UTSA,
USAA, Valero, to name a few.
Complementing the military and
tourism industries, District 8
forms a foundation on which our
entire city has thrived and continues to attract new businesses.
The medical and biosciences
fields alone account for almost
$30 billion in economic activity
for the city, employing about one
in every six San Antonio workers, according to the Greater San

The streetcar no one desires
Earlier in the week opposition to the proposed VIA
streetcars intensified when local businessman Red McCombs
came out in support of those
challenging VIA Metropolitan
Transit’s plan.
McCombs reportedly contacted the Texas Attorney General’s Office and said that in
his opinion the way VIA wants
to pay for the $280 million
streetcar proposal is suspect
as is the funding for the 2004
Advanced Transportation sales
tax increase.
As for the project itself,
McCombs feels it’ll result
in a three-year disruption of
the downtown area that is not
needed. Plus the mayor’s revitalization of the downtown
would feel that disruption and
his effort to re-energize the
downtown area.
Imagine if you can a once
thriving downtown along Houston Street. A major disruption
resulted in the closing of an untold number of businesses along
the once busy thoroughfare.
Closed were a number of
women’s fine clothing stores
such as Carl’s, Frost Bros. and
Vogue. Men’s stores that are no
more along Houston Street are
Joseph’s and Todd’s.
Well known and recognized
Americana such as Kress and
Woolworth stores became vacant and even the iconic Walgreen’s at Houston and Navarro
is now a small shadow of its
former self.
All this because of another
municipal undergoing called
the Tri-Party Project that was
to bring sidewalk bistros and
pedestrian traffic to Houston
Street. The avenue went from
four eastbound one-way lanes
to today’s two lanes with traffic
going east and west. The bistros
are few, as is the pedestrian
traffic.
The opposition to the streetcar
is not only because of the way
the funding is being handled,
but the downtown would see
two of its main streets undergo
closures while the pavement is
dug up and replaced with railroad tracks for the streetcars.
One has to wonder just how
many businesses will be close
because of the construction.
This Tuesday night the Institute for Public Administration,
Politics and Public Policy at
St. Mary’s University, is hosting Community Conversations
at St. Mary’s on “Streetcars
for San Antonio: Design and
Impact on Downtown Development.”
It’ll be a question and answer
session chaired by Great San
Antonio Chamber of Commerce
President/CEO Richard Pérez.
It should be of interest to you
if you’re wondering why anyone is calling for the streetcars
when there hasn’t been a public
outcry for the transportation
that they’ve voted down at least
twice.

ha comunicado a la oficina del
Procurador General de Texas
y dijo que, en su opinión, la
manera en que VIA quiere
pagar el tranvía propuesto de
$280 millones, se sospecha que
es con los fondos del aumento
en el impuesto a las ventas del
2004 Advanced Transportation.
Y del proyecto mismo, McCombs siente que tendrá como
resultado un trastorno de tres
años en el centro de la ciudad, lo cual no es necesario.
Además, el plan de revitalización del centro de la ciudad
del alcalde sentiría ese trastorno o interrupción en su esfuerzo
por darle nuevamente energía al
área del centro.
Imagine si puede un próspero
centro de la ciudad a lo largo de
la calle Houston. Un importante
trastorno resultó en el cierre de
un sinnúmero de negocios a lo
largo de la vía pública alguna
vez muy transitada.
Se cerraron un número de
tiendas de fina ropa femenina
tal como Carl’s, Frost Bros
y Vogue. Las tiendas para
caballeros que ya no existen
más en la calle Houston son
Joseph’s y Todd’s.
Las tiendas muy conocidas
como Kress y Woolworth se
volvieron vacantes y hasta
el emblemático Walgreen’s
de Houston y Navarro ahora
es solo una sombra de lo que
antes fue.
Todo esto se debe a otro
proyecto municipal llamado
Tri-Party Project, que iba a traer
pequeños cafés en las aceras y
tráfico de peatones a la calle
Houston. La avenida pasó de
ser de cuatro carriles de un solo
sentido hacia el Este a la calle
actual de dos carriles yendo al
Este y al Oeste. Los cafés son
unos cuantos al igual que poco
tráfico de peatones.
La oposición al tranvía no es
solo por la manera en que se
están manejando los fondos,
sino que el centro de la ciudad
vería a dos de sus calles principales sufrir cierres mientras
que se excava el pavimento y
se reemplaza con vías de tren
para los tranvías. Uno solo se
tiene que preguntar cuántos
negocios se cerrarán debido a
la construcción.

St. Mary sobre “Los tranvías

Esto debe ser de su interés si
se pregunta por qué nadie está
pidiendo los tranvías cuando no
ha habido un clamor público en
contra para el transporte, que
la mayoría ha rechazado por
medio del voto por lo menos en
dos ocasiones.

Despite a national recession, San
Antonio’s economy continues
to be ranked as one of the best
performing in the nation. Locally,
sales tax revenues are up sharply,
the housing market is back, and
we’ve added jobs in nearly every
industry, which is fueling new
growth.
But as the recession eases,
state, national, and international
competition for new business
and relocations will heighten and
San Antonio will have a tougher

time keeping current pace. For the
city, this means striking a difficult
balance between addressing basic
services and trimming unnecessary costs and programs, but also
making strategic investments to
build San Antonio’s economy
for the future. For public officials, this means keeping private
interests out of the equation and
ensuring a business-friendly climate thrives for major employers
and small businesses.
Nevertheless, as we grow, so
does the need to balance and
protect our natural resources. For
centuries, residents have enjoyed
clean and abundant water, open
space, and clean air. In boom
times, however, those resources
can be threatened by competing
interests. While the South Texas
economy surges, there is renewed
development over the Edwards
Aquifer, increased strain on broken water utility infrastructure,
and repercussions from environmental oversights which threaten
the health of San Antonians and
funding we rely on for basic infrastructure.
In 2012, San Antonio violated
the clean air standards set by
the Environmental Protection
Agency. Unless area leaders
take steps to address the issue,
San Antonio could be added to
the list of non-attainment cities.
This means the possible elimination of federal funds for highway improvements while being
subjected to new measurement
and reporting requirements. In
the meantime, EPA compliance
costs for sewer overflows could
top $1 billion (according to San
Antonio Water System officials),
unless the agency takes steps
now to rehabilitate aging sewer
infrastructure throughout the city,
a problem we’ve had for years.
We clearly must address basic
environmental concerns as part of
our city’s smart growth strategy;
it’s not just good for the health
of our environment, it is vital to
our economic future and cost of
living.
San Antonio is a city on the
rise in a state of opportunity.
While the challenges are steep,
if we work honestly to find balance among our diverse interests
and communities, the solutions
are well within reach. It starts by
simply being a better neighbor.

Preguntas al Doctor

Doctor, a una persona que yo
conozco se le desarrolló la diabetes y ahora está tomando un té
que le mandan de su tierra, y con
eso ya dejó de tomar medicamentos y hasta está bajando de peso.
¿Podría yo empezar a tomármelo?
La respuesta corta sería: No.
Pero déjeme tratar de explicarle.
Cualquier medicamento, ya
sea en forma de té o de pastillas,
puede tener efectos benéficos,
y/o tóxicos. Esto dependiendo de
factores que los médicos tomamos
en cuenta – como el diagnóstico,
la edad, el peso, las condiciones
del paciente –, y siempre considerando el balance entre el beneficio y el riesgo de usar cualquier
tratamiento.
No quiero decir que el que sea
un “producto natural” en infusión
(té) sea por sí mismo malo. Por
ejemplo, el té de manzanilla con
miel de abeja para ayudar en algunos casos de dolor de garganta es
muy utilizado. Pero el usarlo, no
implica evitar medicamentos que
pueden ser necesarios, como un
antibiótico si se tratara de una fa
ringitis por estreptococo. (O en el
caso de su amiga, el medicamento
para el control de su diabetes.).
Ahora, ese té, relativamente
seguro, puede no serlo, dependiendo de muchos factores, por
ejemplo: a un recién nacido no
se le debe dar miel de abeja; un
paciente con insuficiencia renal
puede necesitar restricción de
líquidos; un diabético tiene que
tomar en cuenta las calorías
extra de la miel; alguien más
puede ser alérgico. ¿Y qué pasa
si en el manojo de hierbas secas
venía otro tipo de hierba tóxica?
Además, en las plantas el fármaco
puede variar mucho, incluyendo
no solo la cantidad de hierba que
se utilice; en qué cantidad de agua
se hierve, cuánto tiempo se le dio
al hervor, cuánto tiempo se dejó
la infusión “reposar”. Incluso, en
algunos productos a qué hora del
día se cortó; cual es la relación
entre la porción activa y la no
activa. Por ejemplo, la cocaína se
encuentra en las hojas de la coca
y la digital, en la flor de la “flor
de manita”. Estos dos últimos
productos, serían un ejemplo de lo
cercano que puede ser la llamada
dosis efectiva, la dosis tóxica o
aun, la dosis letal.
Entonces, consideremos lo
difícil que puede ser el controlar
la cantidad de un medicamento,
al preparar una infusión. Si bien
un té de manzanilla puede no
representar problema, si está “más
cargado o más ligero”. Cuando
hablamos de un té de “flor de
manita”, aunque la digital sea un
extraordinario medicamento, en
ciertos problemas de corazón, la
cantidad es dificilísima de controlar en una infusión.
Pero en nuestros días, gracias
entre otras cosas, a la Investiga
ción Clínica Farmacológica, los
medicamentos que usamos y que
han sido aprobados por la FDA
(Federal Drug Administration)
han sido sujetos a un riguroso
proceso que a veces dura años,
pasando por las fases de investigación química básica, efectos
en otras especies, en individuos
sanos, en grupos reducidos de
individuos con la enfermedad
a tratar, en grupos un poco más
grandes, que deben incluir ambos sexos, diferentes razas y aun
diferentes áreas geográficas. Por
ejemplo, en el tratamiento de la
hipertensión, el grupo de origen
afroamericano responde diferente
a ciertos medicamentos como el
propranolol.
En otros casos, medicamentos,
los resultados varían entre hombres y mujeres.
Actualmente, se sabe que hay
incluso determinantes genéticos,
algunos incluso ya estudiados
y en práctica que se usan para
considerar, el medicamento más
adecuado. Y ni que decir de la
población pediátrica en la que la
dosificación se calcula incluso de
acuerdo al peso y edad.
Todo este proceso se lleva a
cabo con los más rigurosos sistemas de observación y control.
Siendo la mayor parte de los
estudios actuales, los llamados
doble ciegos, que evitan que la
percepción subjetiva del médicoinvestigador influya en los resultados. Dejando dicha evaluación
final a grupos de análisis especializados, comenzando con el
médico-investigador, la compañía
farmacéutica, las compañías de
evaluación, y finalmente la FDA.
Cuando un medicamento ha
pasado por todas estas fases, se
decidirá (o no) que llegue a los
anaqueles de una farmacia. Y aun
después de esto suelen continuarse
estudios llamados a largo plazo en
población abierta, que pueden dar
lugar a que un medicamento que
estaba ya en uso sea retirado del
mercado.
Así que cuando alguien me
pide una opinión, acerca de
estos estudios de investigación,
que han visto anunciados en
medios de comunicación, centros de investigación o clínicas
médicas que participan en ellos.
Mi respuesta es que quienes participan en ellos, son supervisados
en la más estricta forma, en cuanto a los efectos positivos y /o
negativos del medicamento en
estudio o del placebo, que tiene
la misma apariencia, pero sin el
producto activo. Todo esto, para
minimizar el efecto de la influencia en el propio individuo o en el
investigador.
La evolución de esta disciplina
ha ido desde la Farmacopea con
Jarrones con distintas plantas
secas hasta la actualidad en
que, gracias a la Investigación
Clínica Farmacológica, los medicamentos utilizados son más
controlados y más seguros. Pero
no olvidemos que hasta el agua
podría también tener consecuencias negativas, dependiendo, por
ejemplo: cantidad insuficiente
o excesiva, administración por
una vía inapropiada, que esa
agua estaba contaminada o tenía
demasiados electrolitos (como
el agua de mar). Pasando por
factores que dependen del propio
individuo, como pacientes con
otros problemas (insuficiencia
renal, insuficiencia cardiaca etc.).
Por lo tanto, recordemos que
el decidir utilizar productos que
no han sido suficientemente
valorados, o que podrían incluso
ser peligrosos dependiendo de
las circunstancias. No es lo más
recomendable.
Y en relación a esa amiga con
diabetes que perdió peso con ese
producto “natural”, recordemos
que la diabetes descompensada
puede también causar pérdida
de peso.
Si queremos saber cómo se
prepara un buen guisado, preguntémosle a una amiga, pero
si queremos saber acerca de un
problema de salud, preguntémosle a un doctor o a un profesionista certificado en el cuidado
de la salud.

STEM week opens the door to science,
technology, engineering and math careers

Countless studies have shown
that women and minorities continue to be misrepresented in the
workplace – especially in the science, technology, engineering and
mathematics sectors (also known
as STEM).
According to the Department of
Commerce’s 2011 report “Women
in STEM: A Gender Gap to Innovation,” only 24 percent of those
with STEM careers in the United
States are women. The number of
Latinas and minorities in that group
is – needless to say – even lower
than that.
In an effort to change this growing issue, the San Antonio Hispanic
Chamber of Commerce (SAHCC),
together with more than 40 companies and sponsors, put on its
4th Annual CORE4 STEM Expo
that will go on until Saturday,
November, 16, 2013. The expo is a
free, hands-on annual event geared
towards middle schoolers from
inner city public school districts
in San Antonio. Through general
assemblies, meetings and hands-on
activities, students are exposed to
careers in the STEM fields and have
the opportunity to learn outside of
the classroom.
During the expo’s “Latina Day”
event this past Thursday, more than
1,000 middle school girls from the
Edgewood, Harlandale, South San,
Southwest and San Antonio Independent School Districts gathered
at Freeman Expo Hall where they
were treated to a keynote speech
by Janie Martinez Gonzalez, CEO
of Webhead. The assembly was fol-
lowed by hands-on sessions with a
number of groups such as Toyota,
Whataburger, and several of the
Alamo Colleges.
Gonzalez, who broke barriers by
becoming CEO of a dominantly
male technology field in the 90s,
admitted that she was not used
speaking to “tween” girls – girls
who are too old to be children and
too young to be teenagers – especially about STEM careers.
“I think it’s hard to articulate the
right message that will motivate
them. It’s a very precarious age
where they’re trying to be ‘cool’
and cool isn’t about science and
technology. They’re under a lot of
pressure; I still believe that hasn’t
changed,” Gonzalez said.
The Chamber’s President &
CEO Ramiro Cavazos gave details
as to the background and importance behind holding this growing
event.
“The San Antonio Hispanic
Chamber of Commerce applied for
a grant from the AT&T Foundation
and we received an initial grant of

Lessons from the ‘conservative
counter-revolution that wasn’t’

It’s all about the White House.
A little over a one year ago,
the 2012 general elections took
place. The day after former Governor Mitt Romney conceded defeat, this author was surprised to
see many commentators suggest
that the Grand Old Party would
have to transform itself into a
more moderate mold or face political irrelevance. This prompted
flashbacks to November 2008,
when similar predictions about
the Republican Party were made
shortly after the Democrats’
sweep in that election. This
author strongly felt that such
predictions carried little weight, a
suspicion subsequently validated
by the rise of the Tea Party Movement in early 2009 and obstinacy
by the House of Representatives
regarding the Senate immigration
bill and the debt ceiling in 2013.
This author believes the 2012
presidential election could have
enabled a conservative counterrevolution had Romney won.
Nonetheless, he never believed
it marked a low tide for (what
have sometimes-imprecisely
been called) ‘conservative’ principles. The Republican Party
is still very much in the game,
and the significance of the Tea
Party brand remains strong.
Political analysts must make
note of these facts, as well as the
fact that the ideological center
of the electorate has lacked an
appealing person or party for
the last couple of years. While
the presidential election of 2008
provided a choice between two
relatively moderate candidates,
the year 2012 was characterized
by greater ideological extremism
and partisanship.
Obama’s campaign strategy
shifted away from attracting Independents, which worked well
in 2008, to riling up Democrats
and reaching out to disillusioned
Democratic-leaning groups like
Hispanics and homosexuals. His
aggressiveness during the last
two presidential debates also
differed starkly from the more
restrained demeanor he displayed
throughout numerous debates in
2007 and 2008. Meanwhile, the
Romney campaign courted unloving Tea Partiers and chose a
V.P. candidate meant to appeal to
his party’s base. Of course, these
campaign tactics and political
mudslinging were not what made
2012 a potential milestone. It was
what did not happen.
In some people’s minds, a
Romney win may have cemented
the idea that elections can be
bought, given the massive independent spending by super
PACs and ‘social welfare organizations’ following the Supreme
Court’s Citizens United decision.
This author felt such fears were
overblown and the election’s outcome made clear that ultimately
votes matter more than money.
Moreover, change in control of
the White House would have
also heralded a dynamic shift
in at least four key policy areas:
health insurance reform, financial
reform, new air pollution control,
and immigration.
For enthusiastic conservatives,
a Romney win would have allowed the repeal, or at least obstruction of, the Affordable Care
Act, the Dodd-Frank Act, new
federal regulations on greenhouse
gases and other air pollutants, and
the ‘Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals’ policy. The task
of implementing these falls to
four executive agencies, but controlling the White House alone
can enable a series of regulatory
changes that directly affect hundreds of thousands of people. By
2016, a new president will find it
difficult to reverse these trends
and the same goes for an activist
Congress so long as the president
hails from a different party.
What does all this mean for
the future? This author predicts
the following. The 2016 presidential race will involve stronger
efforts to reach out to ideological
centrists, the need for the Republican nominee to appeal to Tea
Party affiliates will still exist but
not be as essential, the public
will gradually accept as normal
unlimited independent spending
and undisclosed donors, and the
regulatory issues that were so
important last year (except those
regarding immigration) will be
replaced by new ones. Admittedly, it is still very early, but for
some people it is never too early
to begin planning a presidential
campaign. Just ask Chris Christie
and Hillary Clinton.

Miles de veces decimos que
estamos aburridos. Decimos
que no tenemos nada que hacer
porque no viajamos o porque no
salimos, o hasta por no gastar
dinero. Pero la realidad es que la
persona aburrida solo se queja de
las cosas que no están bien, y de
las cosas que no le gustan.
Hace unas semanas mi novio
me dijo que ya estaba cansado
de San Antonio porque era una
ciudad muy aburrida. Después,
visité a mi familia en Cd. Juárez,
México, y mi hermano se quejó
mucho de lo aburrido que era
vivir ahí.
De la misma manera, cada vez
que voy a casa de una de mis
mejores amigas dice que nunca
hay “nada” de comer en su casa
y que solo hay cosas aburridas
que se tardan mucho.
También me ha tocado escuchar a amigas y amigos que
dicen que su trabajo es muy
aburrido y que lo hacen porque
tienen que hacerlo, no por gusto.
La persona aburrida solo se
queja, se aburre de sí misma y de
todo lo que le rodea. Su conversación carece de emotividad, sus
movimientos no tienen fuerza y
son con pereza, y no existe poder
en el mundo que le haga abrir
su imaginación para cambiar el
aburrimiento a un momento de
diversión y entusiasmo.
Qué triste es saber que mucha
gente se aburre en cualquier
lugar en donde se encuentre, y en
lugar de aprovechar las oportunidades que tienen, las dejan ir y a
cambio, prefieren aburrirse más.
Existen mil maneras con las
que una persona le puede encontrar gusto a la vida. Comenzando
por mostrar una actitud positiva,
entusiasmo, y ánimo. El punto
es tener iniciativa y hacerlo sin
importar lo que venga.
No te quejes, mejor disfruta
de tu libertad y aprovéchala.
Disfruta de todo lo que tienes a
tu alrededor y descubre que no
siempre el dinero va a solucionar
tus problemas. Muchas veces
es tu imaginación lo que hará
mucho más divertido e interesante tu día.

Just a Thought: Good deeds

In last week’s column I wrote
about a lifelong search looking
for the missing ingredient needed
to determine success or failure.
As it turned out, the answer that
eluded me for years boiled down
to one word. That word happened
to be “faith.”
I posed two questions. One
related to why some well thought
out plans for the starting of a business or a career change fell short
of the mark and the other related
to marketing strategy for life’s
financial or personal aspirations.
By the end of the column I
came to the revelation that I understood the missing ingredient.
It is so simple yet hard to come
by for some of us.
Since my revelation last week
I was able to put my “faith” into
play. Days after I wrote the column I was headed into HEB to
pick up a few things to eat. As I
was grabbing a cart to go in and
buy snack food, I noticed a man
near me was holding on to two
bags that he was trying to take out
of his cart. The man had only one
arm and was struggling to hold
on to the bags with his good arm.
He was obviously not faring too
well as I approached him. Without
thinking I asked him if he needed
assistance. At first he said, “No
thank you I think I have it,” but
I realized he did not have a good
grip on the bags which he was
about to lose any moment.
Realizing he didn’t have it
under control, I immediately
grabbed his bags which were
now slipping out of his good hand
before he lost them. Once I had
secured them for him he was able
to continue to make his way to his
car. He thanked me profusely. It
gave me a warm feeling that I was
able to assist someone in need
even if it was only ensuring he
didn’t drop his groceries. I began
to understand “faith” a little better
as being something that leads to
success no matter how small or
seemingly insignificant.
Then once again I was in HEB
shopping and noticed a woman
in an electric cart maneuvering
her way down the aisle coming
toward me from the opposite
direction. She would stop and
stretch trying to get an item off
a shelf that was somewhat out of
her range.
Remembering my last encounter, I approached her and asked
her if I could assist her by grabbing the needed item or items for
her. She beamed and said, “thank
you.” For the next 10 minutes or
so we introduced ourselves and
socialized and shared a great
conversation. We talked about
Veteran’s Day coming up and I
mentioned I served in Vietnam.
Before I moved on to another aisle
she did ask if I could rearrange her
basket so she could get more food
into it. Not a problem.
As she went on about her
business I ran into her two more
times in other food aisles. Again
we visited. Finally as I was about
ready to check out, she said,
“Before I forget, thank you for
your service.” She made my day
as well as I hoped I did for her.
Apparently the answer is not only
“faith” but an extra helping of
good deeds.
And as always, what I write is
“Just a Thought.”

Avoiding accidents at
home, one tip at a time

Watching our babies grow is
a funny and interesting thing.
They go through stage after stage,
learning and adapting to their environment. As a mama, I enjoyed
watching Noah tackle his small
battles. I remember all the fun I
had with Elijah too, and now I’m
living it all over again thanks to
his younger brother.
Even though Noah is already
5-years-old, I remember when he
started walking. For any parent,
that can be frightening. We worry
about all sharp corners and every
tiny step they take. In the beginning it was small step after small
step; now he runs everywhere, full
speed ahead, giving me a heart
attack each time. What can I say,
I’m a worry bug.
It’s no longer good enough for
him to get around slowly, now he
feels the need to do everything in
a hurry. Turning corners has become a hazard. The kitchen is no
longer a safe haven and the stairs
in my apartment are a whole new
level of stress for me.
As much as I try to get him to
slow down or calm down, he’ll
simply look at me, smile and
take off.
For now, I have no solution.

childproofing steps brought to you

CHILDPROOFING IN THE
KITCHEN
• Install safety latches on all
cabinets and drawers to keep children from potentially poisonous
household products

electrocution from contact with
water in the bathroom. Also keep
them away from curious children
to prevent burns
• Cover unused electrical outlets
with outlet protectors or safety
caps. Make sure outlets in the
bathroom and kitchen are updated
with ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs), which turn off
electricity if appliances fall into
water. For outlets in use, tape
plugs into outlets, especially those
low to the ground
CHILDPROOFING
AROUND THE HOUSE
• Use safety gates at the top and
bottom of stairs and in the door-
ways of rooms with hazards. Gates
with expanding pressure bars
should be placed away from baby
• Use doorknob covers to keep
children away from rooms and
other areas with hazards, such
as swimming pools. Be careful,
though, that these devices are
easy for adults to use in case of
emergency
• Put corner and edge bumpers
on furniture and other items like a
fireplace hearth to protect against
injury
• Place furniture away from
high windows so children won’t
climb onto windowsills. Screens
aren’t strong enough to keep
children from falling through
windows
• Make sure window blinds do
not have looped cords -- they can
be strangulation hazards for children. Blinds, shades, and draperies
purchased before 2001 should be
repaired or replaced. Also, always
lock blinds into position whether
they are all the way up or down
• Remove free-falling lids from
toy chests, which should have a
lid that stays open or a very light,
removable one
• Prevent furniture from tipping
by securing bookcases, shelving,
and heavy furniture to walls with
brackets and anchors. When storing items, put heavier items on
bottom shelves and in bottom
drawers
While these steps are just the
beginning and you may have other
concerns, I know that they’ve
eased my mind in knowing that
I’m not the only one who struggles
with crazy kids running around
the house. I guess all we can do
as parents is pray and hope that
our children remain out of harm’s
way.

sessions offered for boys and girls.
While “Latina Day” is offered for

reason behind this has to do with
making the kids comfortable and
to help them focus on the hands-on
sessions.
“Seventh and eighth graders,
they’re in that stage of their life
when they’re transitioning. We do
it, really, to give them an opportunity to feel very comfortable about
focusing on what they’re seeing
today as girls, and then one day for
the boys to focus as boys. So it’s really less about separating them but
it’s allowing them to play to their
strengths as genders,” Cavazos said.
Although middle school students
seem to be the ideal candidates for
STEM exposure, there are some
people like Gonzalez who think
children should begin to learn
about STEM careers even earlier
than that.
“I think we need to start younger.
I think it’s something that if it’s
more natural and is part of everyday
life experiences and is integrated
as early as Pre-K, I think that we
would have greater success with
it,” Gonzalez said.
Due to the nation’s low educational funding, it is not currently
possible for public schools to focus
as much on STEM careers as they
would like. For now, however,
students can be sure to count on
expos like CORE4 STEM to help
guide them towards a career in science, technology, engineering or
mathematics.

only Internship class in San Antonio Catholic high schools.
The first magazine issue to which
the interns contributed was a “Special Edition” featuring Quinceanera
traditions and other celebrations—
like weddings.
“ChicaGirl magazine is currently
undergoing some fresh changes—
new logo, new layouts—and it’s
very exciting to be a part of that,”
said McNulty. “It’s also great to
have the opportunity to be published, and with such freedom in
my writing.”
Perez is working on the graphics
team, and seeing the production side
of the magazine.
“It’s interesting to learn the technical aspects of production and the
how the pages are put together,”
Perez, said. “I am getting practical
experience using Adobe InDesign,
Photoshop, and Illustrator, which
are industry standards.”

Generally speaking, science and
art are polar opposites.
One is analytical and precise
while the other boasts creativity and
expression.
However, an array of paintings,
drawings, photographs, poems and
textiles crafted by nurses and doctors adorned the Foundation Room
at University Health System (UHS)
last week, proving that it is possible
for art and science to coexist.
In order to cope with the stress
entangled with working at a Trauma
Level One hospital, various medical
staff members at UHS use art as a
creative outlet to relax.
Registered Nurse for the Trauma
Intensive Care Unit, Frank Flores,
contributed three acrylic paintings
to the exhibit.
Despite showcasing artwork
resembling that of a trained artist,
Flores is self-taught.
“I do art work on the side just for
recreation and relaxation,” he said.
Although Flores has drawn all his
life, he recently started adding color
to his work – as a suggestion from
his wife, which in terms led to his
latest endeavor in acrylic painting.
In an effort to highlight the healing benefits of art, the Center for
Caring at University Health System
held its fourth annual University
Hospital Healing Arts Exhibit last
week.
“Art is healing for the person
that’s creating it, and it’s also very
healing to the person that comes and
participates in the exhibit by seeing
it,” Director of the Center for Caring
at University Health System Mary
Alice Ayon said.
The Center for Caring provides
spiritual and emotional support for
the medical staff.
Trauma survivor and local artist,
Jane Swanson, was the featured
guest speaker at the exhibit.
She was the lone survivor of the
Century 21 shooting in 2003.
“Ten years ago in an office shooting I was shot point blank to the right
temple, brought right here by air life
at this very hospital,” Swanson said.
Although as a child Swanson
had always dreamed of being a fine
artist, she didn’t fully delve into her
passion until after the shooting.
By the time she was 30 years old
she had worked as a graphic designer, an illustrator, an advertising
artist and an art director, but had yet
to become a fine artist.
Swanson eventually started selling real estate, thinking that would
give her the time to create and sell
art.
“All that really did, selling real

I found that I was doing some of
the best work that I had done in my
entire life after the brain injury,”
Swanson added.
She showcased a painting she
did for University Health System in
2006 titled Growth through Health
Healing and Hope.
In vibrant colors, the painting
depicts three sunflowers growing
under a beaming sun.
“The sun is God, the sun rays are
the healing power of the Holy Spirit
and the three sun flowers are the holy
trinity,” Swanson explained. “To me
it only means you can only heal from
the power of God.”
Swanson is currently working on
a three part series that will be hung
in the new Trauma Towers building
set to debut in early 2014. Each of
the three pieces will be on a 4x4
canvas and will depict the idea of
being blessed.

Their talent has barely surfaced and each as they get
better as a unit is bad news for
the other teams who have their
sights set on a championship
because I have a feeling all
roads will lead through Kentucky.
Week after week in current NFL
headlines, injuries always manage
to pop up.
The rules constantly being added
to boost “safety” for players are actually hindering these athletes.
I’m not saying for them to legally
hit each other with their helmets, but
look at the other rules that prevented
these athletes from being ruthless.
I know the negative side effects of
football. My own brother had his entire knee torn due to a teammate error
and a concussion that same year. But
rules like cutting from three-a-days to
two-a-days in preseason are crippling
their bodies from getting tougher.
NFL Hall of Famers have even
stated that the game has gotten softer,
that they didn’t train in the more
relaxed conditions the current NFL
stars are under currently.

trained under terrible conditions
in terrible equipment but never
stopped. The current injuries that
are on the rise and constantly popup are little to non-existent.

owned the current equipment of today, injuries might have been rare.

“Estoy contento por habérseme
confiado tomar las riendas del equipo
San Antonio Rampage. Para mí es
una gran responsabilidad dirigir al
Rampage, por lo que sabré valorar la
decisión tomada por el alto mando”,
afirmó Tom Rowe, quien viene a ser
el noveno entrenador en los 11 años
de Rampage jugando en la American
Hockey League (AHL).
Rowe fue designado entrenador
en jefe el viernes 8 de noviembre,
siendo presentado por el gerente
general Mike Santos. Y entró
a reemplazar al experimentado

International board of Directors

At the annual meeting of the
Little League® International
Board of Directors in South
Williamsport, Pa., three new
volunteers took their seats on the
26-member board.
Long-time volunteers from
Texas, Michigan and Guatemala,
all of whom serve as District
Administrators, assumed their
three-year term on the Board of
Directors. They join six other
District Administrators on the
Board of Directors, representing
all nine Little League’s regions.
From the Southwest Region,
Joe Patterson, of Seguin, Texas,
succeeds Camilla Serrano of
Albuquerque, N.M.
Mr. Patterson, Texas District
31 Administrator since 1986, first
became involved in Little League
as a team manager for six years
and then a League President. He
currently oversees the operation
of 17 local leagues outside of San
Antonio. A logistics Buyer for
Continental Automotive Group,
Mr. Patterson served on Little
League’s International Advisory
Committee from 2007 to 2010.
Representing the Central Region is John Edgerle of Wyo-
ming, Mich. Mr. Edgerle, Michigan District 9 Administrator since
1994, takes the seat of Linda
Sanfilippo, of Romeoville, Ill. He
served as the President of Piney
Park Little League until 2004, and
his wife Kathy, currently serves
on Mr. Edgerle’s district staff, as
Assistant District Administrator
for Softball. A retired automobile
salesman, he oversees the operations of 24 local leagues in the
Grand Rapids area.
Taking over the seat vacated by
José Berrios of Bayamon, Puerto
Rico, for the Latin America Region
is Dr. Noel Corrales. Dr. Corrales
of Guatemala City, Guatemala, is
the District Administrator for the
more than 400 Little Leaguers in
the Central American country. A
former member of the Guatemala
National Basketball team, Dr.
Corrales, a vascular surgeon, was
elected District Administrator in
2004 after spending two years

En este mensaje tratamos el
siguiente caso de una mujer
que “descargó su conciencia”
de manera anónima en
nuestro sitio www.conciencia.
net, autorizándonos a que la
citáramos:
“Hace un poco más de tres
años perdí a un sobrino. Tenía
diecinueve años y fue de repente.
Estando en la universidad, cayó
desmayado y, al llevarlo al
hospital, llegó muerto. Esto
me dolió muchísimo. (Él)
estudiaba medicina y era un
buen muchacho.
“Aún hoy, cuando me asaltan
los recuerdos, sufro como el
primer día de su muerte.... Mi
temor es ofender a Dios con
mi tristeza, pues hay personas
que me dicen que con mi sentir
demuestro no confiar en las
promesas del Señor Jesucristo”.
Este es el consejo que le dio
mi esposa:
“Estimada amiga:
“Sentimos mucho esta gran
pérdida que usted y toda su
familia han sufrido. Perder
a un ser querido tan joven
y tan repentinamente es una
experiencia terrible para
cualquiera, por lo que es muy
comprensible la gran tristeza
que sienten.
“Debido a lo que otros le han
dicho, usted teme que pudiera
estar ofendiendo a Dios con su
tristeza. Es probable que esa
idea proceda de las enseñanzas
del apóstol Pablo. Él dijo que el
morir como seguidor de Cristo
es muy diferente que morir
sin conocer a Cristo. Quienes
han cultivado una relación
personal con Cristo pasan a
la eternidad acompañados por
Dios. San Pablo dijo que, si
bien pudiéramos extrañar a esas
personas, debemos comprender
que algún día nos reuniremos
con ellas en la presencia de
Dios. Así que podemos contar
con verlas de nuevo.
“En cambio, quienes mueren
sin Cristo no tienen la esperanza
eterna de vivir en el cielo,
lo cual quiere decir que los
echaremos de menos para
siempre. Eso causa una pena
y una tristeza más profundas,
ya que no tenemos esperanza
alguna de volver a verlos jamás.
“Usted no dice si su sobrino
era o no un seguidor de Cristo. Si
lo era, entonces siga el consejo
de San Pablo y concentre sus
pensamientos en el hecho de
que su sobrino está ahora en la
presencia de Dios, disfrutando
de paz y gozo para siempre.
Pero si su sobrino no era un
seguidor de Cristo, entonces
es más comprensible el tiempo
prolongado de tristeza que usted
ha sufrido.
“De cualquier manera, la
tristeza que usted siente no
ofende a Dios. No podemos
encender o apagar nuestros
sentimientos solo por
desearlo. Cuando tratamos de
controlarlos por medio de la
razón o de la lógica, corremos
el riesgo de enfermarnos física o
mentalmente. En vez de reprimir
su tristeza, debe buscar un lugar
seguro en el que pueda hablar
al respecto con personas de
confianza. Muchas iglesias y
clínicas para la salud mental
tienen grupos de apoyo para
quienes afrontan un duelo. Le
recomendamos que busque
uno de esos grupos y comience
a asistir a las reuniones. El
desahogarse al expresar en
voz alta sus sentimientos y
escuchar a otros contar acerca
de emociones parecidas hará
que poco a poco disminuya la
tristeza, pero no espere que
desaparezca por completo.
Cuando acepte ese hecho, no le
será tan difícil sobrellevarla”.

Uno tras otro, los grandes
aviones fueron aterrizando en el
aeropuerto. Hacía buen tiempo,
y las señales de radio y las
luces de aterrizaje funcionaban
como debían. Las instrucciones
emitidas desde la torre de control
del aeropuerto de Ankara,
Turquía, eran claras. Fue así
como aterrizaron dieciséis
aviones esa noche entre las 0
horas y las 6 de la mañana.
Sin embargo, el controlador
aéreo Guclu Cevik, que sufría
de narcolepsia, había estado
dormido la mayor parte del
tiempo. Semidormido, había
dado, mecánicamente, las
instrucciones. Por suerte y de
milagro, no ocurrió ningún
accidente.
Es terrible cuando, por
obligación del cargo o del
oficio, el que tiene que estar
bien despierto y alerta se duerme
en su trabajo.
¿Qué le puede pasar a un
autobús repleto de pasajeros, que
anda por un camino montañoso,
si el chofer se duerme? ¿Qué
le puede pasar a un barco
ballenero que se arriesga en
un mar turbulento, plagado de
témpanos de hielo, si el timonel
se duerme?
Los centinelas que vigilan el
cuartel no deben dormirse. Los
agentes de policía que cuidan el
vecindario no deben dormirse.
Las enfermeras que, en la
unidad de cuidados intensivos,
controlan los aparatos que
regulan los signos vitales no
deben dormirse.
Por lo mismo, un padre
que tiene hijos pequeños y
adolescentes tampoco debe
dormirse.
Los traficantes de drogas
saben cómo iniciar a un joven
en la nefanda adicción de
marihuana y cocaína.
Los programas de televisión
saben cómo incitar al incauto
en la pornografía y el crimen.

A Public Hearing will take place beginning at 9 a.m. on Thursday, December 19,
2013 in the City Council Chamber, Municipal Plaza Building. This will be a U.S.
Department of Housing and Urban Development required city-wide public hearing
for a substantial amendment to the City’s FY 14 Consolidated Annual Action Plan/
Budget to authorize a reprogramming action in an amount not to exceed $75,000
in Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG) funds for shelter and prevention activities.
A copy of the proposed reprogramming budget will be available for review and
comment on the Office of Grants Monitoring and Administration website www.
sanantonio.gov/gma beginning Monday, November 18, 2013 through the date
of the public hearing. This information also will be available for review and
comment at the Department of Planning and Community Development’s, Grants
Monitoring and Administration Division located at 1400 S. Flores, Unit 3. Copies
will also be located at the Department of Human Services located at 106 South
St. Mary’s Street, 7th Floor and the Central Library located at 600 Soledad.
Citizens wishing to speak at the public hearing may individually sign the appropriate sign-in sheet for that purpose which will be provided at the entrance of the
City Council Chambers prior to 9 a.m. the day of the hearing. Each citizen will
have three minutes to speak on one or multiple agenda items. Groups consisting
of three or more citizens will be allotted nine minutes total to address the council

Esta semana tuve la oportunidad
de visitar un nuevo local de alitas,
Wings Army, que – aunque acaba
de llegar a San Antonio – ya existen
111 franquicias en México que han
dado grandes resultados.
El restaurante se ubica en el
20811 US 281, Ste. 430, en uno de
los locales en donde H-E-B Plus de
esa zona se encuentra.
Se preguntarán por qué un nuevo
restaurante de alitas en San Antonio
si ya existen muchos otros. Bueno,
pues yo me pregunté lo mismo; sin
embargo, cuando entré al lugar y
probé tan solo algunos de sus platillos me di cuenta del porqué.
El concepto Wings Army es
básicamente para gente que busca
disfrutar de una agradable cena o
comida en compañía de amigos,
de familia o hasta de compañeros
de trabajo.
Wings Army cuenta con cervezas
de 20 países. Además, de cada país
ofrece una variedad de bastantes
cervezas como para no acabar en
una noche.
Tuve la oportunidad de conocer al
dueño, Martín Santaella, quien con
su sencillez y buen humor nos hizo
saber que si algo en este mundo le
entretiene es la cocina.
“Me gusta mucho probar nuevas
cosas y hacer mis propios inventos
para que los clientes lo prueben”,
señaló Santaella. “Yo creo que para
que funcione un negocio, uno debe
de interesarse por lo que hace y también debe involucrarse con el equipo
para probar nuevas ideas”, agregó.
El mesero, que por cierto cabe
recalcar que ofreció muy buen servicio, nos sirvió las cervezas y nos
llevó a la mesa unas cuantas alitas
de las más solicitadas en los locales
de México.
Probé alitas Lemon Pepper, Garlic Parmesan, Tamarindo, Ahumada,
Original Hot, Xplosion y Cajun.
Lo que hace diferentes estas alitas
de las otras que he probado en San
Antonio es el sabor crujiente por
fuera y suave por dentro que llevan.
Con esto quiero decir que las
alitas que he probado muchas veces
son suaves, muy tiernitas y sin esa
textura crujiente por fuera.
Definitivamente recomiendo
todas las que probé, sin embargo la
que más recomiendo es la Cajun.
Esta salsa no es muy picosa, ya que
se puede comer sin ningún problema
de sentir el ardor en la lengua, pero al
mismo tiempo cuenta con un sabor
muy peculiar gracias a sus especies.
Las alitas Cajun, acompañadas
de limón y algo de aderezo Ranch,
son perfectas.
Para acompañar las alitas, pedí
una orden de papas a la francesa y

1.) Heat oven to 400°F. Spray a 9”
x 13” baking dish with nonstick
cooking spray, set aside. Prepare
bulgur and quinoa according to
package directions; cool in prepared
baking dish.
2.) Place squash in microwave-safe
dish, cover, microwave on high 5
minutes. Add to bulgur.
3.) Heat large heavy-bottom skillet
over high heat 3 minutes. Add 3
tablespoons olive oil, celery, onions,
peppers, garlic, and mushrooms,
and stir-fry 5 minutes or until onion
is translucent and golden. Add to
bulgur and quinoa. Stir in spinach,
thyme, sage and crushed red pepper.
Gently toss. Season with salt and
pepper to taste.
4.) Bake uncovered on center oven
rack 20 minutes or until piping hot.

13 estrenaron esta semana su
primer sencillo después de cuatro
años: “Multi_Viral”, una canción
que formará parte de su nuevo
álbum, que será el quinto en su
producción musical.
Y como es su estilo, el dúo
invita a polémicas personalidades a sus proyectos. En esta
ocasión, la canción cuenta con
la participación de nada menos
que Julian Assange, reconocido
activista fundador de Wikileaks
y hacker acusado de filtrar información clasificada a medios de
comunicación.
Asimismo, cuentan con la
participación de Tom Morello, ex
guitarrista de la agrupación Rage
Against the Machine, quien está
catalogado por la revista Rolling
Stone como uno de los mejores
guitarristas de la historia.
Y como tercera invitada tienen
a la compositora y música palestina Kamilya Jubrán.
De acuerdo a información dada
a conocer por la disquera, el concepto del tema surgió en junio
de este año cuando Residente
junto a Julian Assange, a través
de un twitter, propusieron a sus
seguidores a escribir una canción
conjunta.
Como resultado recibieron
miles de correos electrónicos
de los cuales seleccionaron las

tu cuerpo; de ahí salta a la conectividad actual que existe en
forma global, y es por eso que
somos 132 y 15-M, porque hay
una conexión. Hoy en día puedes
ser parte de un movimiento en
España y en México al mismo
tiempo, y todo de manera pacífica; porque ‘levanto mi pancarta
y la difundo’. Esa fue la parte
más compleja, lograr proyectar el
coraje y la fuerza siendo pacífica,
sin ser panfletero”.
Por su parte, Visitante, quien
es el productor musical, explica:
“Lo que traté de comunicar fue
la lucha entre el tema interpretado por nosotros; René lo
está cantando, yo trabajando en
la música, y la gente tratando
de entrar al tema. Es una lucha, como cuando los virus
entran en las computadoras y
se propagan. Da la impresión
que René quiere imponerse y la
gente sigue tratando de entrar.
Viene Kamilya, que está editada
como si hubiera un glitch, luego
invade Assange y comunica, y
de momento vuelve el coro. Al
final acaba con el sonido como
si todos hubiesen sido interferencia”. Cuando escuchamos la
canción, nos percatamos que a
través de ella se siente el sonido
de las interferencias como una
representación auditiva de lo que
el contenido lírico transmite”.

is the namesake of the Mariachi
Vargas Extravaganza which is in

longest running mariachi music

preserve and promote the music,
the culture and the traditions of
Mexico. It continued through
the early 80s, came to a halt, and
was brought back in 1995. The
event has been ongoing for 19
consecutive years and continues
to promote cultural preservation
and higher education among
Hispanic youth.

Let’s be real for a second before
I re-introduce you to the new and
improved Alexander Hilmy (and
company).
San Antonio gets no love.
We’re the illegitimate child of
great American cities. Nothing in
this city is cool. Right?
Wrong.
San Antonio has a beautiful
culture and history that stretches
beyond that and is on fire in terms
of youthful talent spawning innovative businesses.
Take Alexander Hilmy, for example. Two years ago he went full
force into starting his own photography business and never looked
back. Now, he’s been able to build
upon his business and expand.
This is no surprise, because in
our first conversation back in May
2012, Hilmy was already focused
on expansion and the future. He
had a somewhat grandiose vision
of what he wanted the business
to be, however, that vision has
morphed a bit but remains large.
Hilmy, along with his team
(who I’ll get to in a second)
have turned what was originally
a photography business into a
full-fledged production company
able to accommodate photo, print,
design and video.
“We’re go-getters, all of us. We
all approach things with such creative and aggressive demeanors
that I think we kind of live for the
fear of what is next. It’s funny, because I remember before I started
this company I was talking to
Derek and I was like ‘what do you
think about opening a photo and
print business’ and nine months
later, since he’s been full time,
we’re looking at doubling our
overhead in a space downtown,”
Hilmy said.
Derek, is Hilmy’s right hand
man of sorts and, admittedly, his
boss.
“I consider him (Derek) my
boss. I run everything by him,”
Hilmy said. “He is extremely organized. He knows current jobs,
pending jobs, proposals, open
RFPs…all these things, and I am
way up in the clouds. He keeps
me grounded but we think so differently, it’s like opposites attract
and it works.”
He has a background in engineering, according to Hilmy,
which is what makes the pair so
different. But, at the end of the day
the twosome works well together.
After meeting Derek just before lunch on the day I went to
interview Hilmy, I figured he was
an important part of the business
considering he was at his desk

3 señales de que estás con
la persona equivocada

Cuando alguien está con la persona equivocada su voz interior le
susurra: “No te conviene”, “Tú
mereces más”, “¿Hasta cuándo
vas a aguantar?” Y es que, quien
se encuentra en una mala relación
amorosa, lo sabe, pero se hace
el ciego con tal de no tener que
enfrentar un divorcio, una separación dolorosa, no hacer sufrir a
terceras personas o simplemente
quedarse solo.
Esta columna le quitará la venda a todos los que se preguntan si
están en la relación correcta. He
aquí tres señales que delatan a la
pareja equivocada.
1. A tus familiares y amigos
no les agrada tu pareja. Tengo
una amiga que antes de casarse,
todos los que la queremos sabíamos que su novio no le convenía,
por eso le preguntamos: “¿Estás
segura que ese hombre te hará
feliz?” Ella se casó y su matrimonio duró solo un año, como
todos habíamos pronosticado.
Las personas que te quieren, no
tienen la venda del amor en los
ojos y por eso ellos pueden ver los
comportamientos negativos de tu
pareja que tú ignoras o justificas.
2. Continuamente tienen
desacuerdos. Todas las parejas
pelean, ¡eso es normal! Pero te advierto que si se la pasan peleando
como “perros y gatos” significa
que esa persona no es buena para
ti. En una relación saludable
siempre existe más armonía que
desacuerdos.
3. Sientes que no puedes ser tú
mismo. Si tienes que cambiar tu
comportamiento o dejar de hacer
lo que antes disfrutabas con tal de
complacer a tu pareja nunca estarás feliz en esa relación. Debes
estar con alguien que no quiera
cambiarte y te acepte tal como
eres. En esta vida para sentirse
pleno hay que tener la libertad
de poder expresar lo que somos.
Quiero concluir esta columna
recordándote, que cuando estás en
una relación que no te conviene
siempre te vas a sentir inseguro,

I just want to start off by saying I’m a gamer and have been
since Atari 2600. When the first
Nintendo was released I was hands
on with the magic. I have owned
every console between Atari 2600
and the current (for now) gen
Xbox 360 and PS3.
Back in the day I recall rivalry
between Nintendo and Sega. TV
ads would hurl insults and the
teams would respectively do
whatever it took to be the only one.
That brings us to the current PS4
and Xbox One battle. A lot of the
“there can be only one” attitude
has rebirthed the good old fashion
console wars once again.
As said earlier, I have been an
early adopter of every system from
since I can remember. I love both
of these companies dearly it is
hard for me to take a biased approach to either.
Xbox and PlayStation have
both given me ample amounts of
fun, jaw-dropping game play and
both have rolled out games that are
equally amazing.
So that brings us to the current
state of the console war. Xbox
vs. PlayStation will battle for
your wallet with hopes to draw
first blood.
I don’t have a million dollars
this holiday season so after much
deliberation on what starving
would be like over the holidays I
decided to cancel my PS4 reserve
and hold strong with my Xbox
One preorder.
The determining factor for me
was neither “who can be the snarkiest company” or which game
system was more powerful and
had the best launch games (I will
get back to that) it was simply
that I am a admirer of the Xbox
Gamerscore and the achievements
system they have in place.
At the end of the day PS4 is
marginally a more powerful system than Xbox One when it comes
to processing power. That wasn’t
a discouraging factor to me being
that PS3 had been more powerful
than Xbox 360 since day one.
On the other hand Xbox One is
reported to be running at higher
frame rates than the PS4, which
offers a smoother game play experience.
PlayStation 4 had its release this
weekend. At last count pre-orders

for Sony’s powerful gaming system was just ahead of the XBOX
One preorders.
This was no surprise. PS4 is
a fantastic system and the $399
price tag compared to Xbox One’s
$499 price tag is obviously a big
deal to parents buying for their
kids trying to not break the bank.
The reason for the extra hundred
dollars is justified by inclusion of
the powerful 1080p motion capture capable and voice-activated
Kinect.
Both systems have had their
equal share of issues during reviews.
PS4 isn’t capable of streaming
video from a PC, there have been
frame rate issues, you cannot use
your own external hard drive with
it, and out of box it does not play
mp3s or CDs. Most concerning is
that some of the review consoles
sent out ended up not working due
to an HDMI output issue.
Xbox One has some launch
titles that aren’t in full 1080p and
had a couple of demo systems at
a game store lock up and need to
be restarted.
To be fair on both sides, the CD
and mp3 issue can be patched out
with an update (internet required)
and the HDMI issue is reported to
be isolated occurrences.
Also to be fair on Xbox One’s
side, Xbox 360 almost never ran
in full 1080p at launch but latter
sorted that out with its third-party
developers, as I’m sure is the case
here.

“Mandela: Long Walk to
Freedom,” is almost unbearable

Okay, let’s get one thing
straight, Idris Elba (“Pacific
Rim”) is a phenomenal actor (one of my favorites) and
does a great job of portraying
Nelson Mandela in “Mandela:
Long Walk to Freedom” which
chronicles the life of the antiapartheid revolutionary and hero
to many South Africans.
With that said, not even Elba
could save “Mandela.” It was
that bad.
The film is a long drawn out
history lesson about Mandela –
emphasis on long. “Mandela” is
146 minutes (too) long. It was
shot beautifully, but the story is
just too boring to care. Director
Justin Chadwick and writer Wil-
liam Nicholson brought nothing
fresh to the table.
Everything that was told about
Mandela can be remembered
from history class or with a
simple Google search. The one
fact that I didn’t already know
was that he was kind of a playboy, but, again, that was not
enough to arouse anyone or keep
me engaged in the film.
The film’s pace is turtle-like.
While Elba does his best to carry
the film, but it never gets off the
ground. “Mandela” flat lines
without signs of life after the
first 30 minutes and will surely
leave viewers disappointed.
There has been much hype
surrounding the film and Elba,
but don’t be fooled as it is just
smoke and mirrors. Elba is
great, but the film is terrible.

In my opinion it was a lame attempt to breathe some life into
a film that never had a chance.
I respect the struggle South
Africans endured and feel the
film captured it in a fair light,
but for entertainment purposes
“Mandela” just does not cut it.
You’d think a man who spent
27 years in prison fighting for
what he believed in would be
much more compelling, but in
this case it was not. I’m sure it
was tough to capture the life of
such a storied man correctly,
however, I would have rather
been lied to and a whole new
story made up.
If you do decide to check out
“Mandela” you’ll face a long
walk back to your car disappointed wondering why you just
spent money to see such a film.

fueled with gore and more

There are activists who think
that hitting the share button on
Facebook is enough to support
a cause. Some weekend warrior
activists support causes as more
of a hobby rather than treating
it seriously.
Director Eli Roth must truly
despise those kinds of people
since they are the latest to be
put through the meat grinder
in his newest film, “The Green
Inferno.”
“I’m really not sure why I
keep making the same movie
and doing the same horrible
things to young college students, but I’m sure it says a lot,”
Roth said.
A group of student activists
go from their cushy pampered
lives in New York into the
Amazon to stop the destruction
of the rainforest and save the
wildlife and tribes that call the
rainforest home.
In an ironic twist the groups
of students are captured by a
primitive cannibalistic tribe, the
same tribe that they had been
trying to save.

lier films “Cabin Fever” and
“Hostel” are a pre cursor as to
what fans or non-fans will get
in “Inferno.”
Roth’s shock-and-awe campaign is in full form. Although
the characters aren’t developed
enough to have an audience
care much about them, I think
as a whole the terror of being
captured and eaten keeps the audience aligned with the group,
especially its lead protagonist.
The real center of the story
is the tribe itself who is full of
character. Roth found the primitive tribe in Peru and used them
in the actual film.
“These people were really
primitive, like they didn’t even
know what ice was. When they
saw ice for the first time they
held it up and were amazed,”
Roth recalled.
Roth had to explain to the
tribe what a movie was and
what their parts were going to
be in his film. The entire time
Roth said that the tribe thought
the entire film was a comedy
and would laugh hysterically
between takes on set.
“Inferno” is Roth doing what
he does best and giving shockingly brutal scenes for audiences to chew on, while at the
same time giving a political
activist underlining to the story.
It is good to see that Roth
doesn’t hide his love for the
cannibal film genre at all and
instead has an entire chronological list of all his favorites
at the end of the credits of “Inferno.” He stands firmly behind
borrowing from the movies he
loves.
During the “Inferno” Q and A
at Fantastic Fest, he told the audience about how he would love
for “Inferno” to do well so that
we could all see a resurgence of
cannibal films. I have to agree
this would be a welcomed sight
and might even raise BBQ sales
in some parts of the country.

Kinect with “Snap Feature” puts
the Xbox One ahead of the curve,
and I could see being the wiser
choice in the long run.
PS4 is a smaller unit, slightly
more powerful and boasts a price
tag that’s $100 less is surely to
attract the large amount of parents
and gamers.
Both systems are launching
with cross platform goodness that
ranges from “Assassins Creed:
Black Flag” to “Call of Duty:
Ghosts.”
The real meat and potatoes
for hardcore gamers lay in each
console’s exclusive launch titles.
PS4 has “Knack,” a game aimed
at families about a robot who
must defeat goblins, “Resogun,”
an impressive looking Geometry Wars-esque game that offers
mind melting visuals, and the
most anticipated “Kill Zone: Fall
of Shadow” that once again pits
the Vektans and the Helghast in
combat 20 years after the last
installment.
Xbox One is launching with
“Ryse: Son of Rome” in which
a Roman solider named Tutus
wages war against his enemies
(the Kinect allows you to shout
commands to Titus’s troops to
gain a strategic advantage during
battle). “Dead Rising 3” where
you play as Nick Ramos fighting
through hoards of the undead (the
Kinect will allow zombies in the
game to detect sound and light
coming from your living room).
“Forza Motorsport 5” allows car
enthusiasts to explore racing while
blurring the line between single
and multi player gaming. And
“Killer Instinct” a favorite when
it comes to fighting games brings
back all your favorite characters
and combos (and combo breakers)
that made the original so amazing.
It’s yet to be seen how well
the Kinect’s functionality will
work. If it works smoothly and is
integrated into games the way it is
on this first batch of games. The
Xbox will gain a slow and steady
advantage over gamers looking for
what’s next in gaming.
Both systems are going to be
great and melt our eyeballs with
groundbreaking visuals and performance.
I think we are past the days
of thinking either one of these
companies will lose out so bad
they go the way of the Sega dodo
bird, but to be sure this year will
mainly show us what gamers really value the most when it comes
to entertainment.
See you on the battlefield… and
I suppose on “Battlefield 4.”
Derek had his serious face on and
whatever the conversation was, it
looked important.
Full disclosure: I tried to do the
best eavesdropping possible without being too noticeable, however,
I couldn’t make out much. But,
trust me it sounded important.
There were a lot of grown up
words said like deadline and proposal and other words business
lingo I didn’t understand.
In the meantime, Hilmy was on
the other side of the office on the
phone pacing back and forth, talking to a client, I assume. He spots
me waiting and gives me one of
those” hello” smiles with a wave.
Hilmy walks over and apologizes.
“It will only be another second,”
he said.
Each were in their own worlds,
operating in completely different
manners but still working to the
same goal of making the business
grow.
Josh and Lizzy, the other vital
parts to the team aren’t in the
office at this particular time but
over lunch Hilmy explains that
they account for a huge part of the
company’s success, too.
Josh, the art director, started
out as a videographer at a local
company before joining the staff.
He does all or most of the graphic
design and video productions.
“He is brilliant with a pencil
and paper,” Hilmy said. “We’ll
take his sketch of a logo, scan and
vector it. From there we’ll work to
create a logo or design based on
his drawing. He’s a really talented
guy.”
Lizzy, just as talented Hilmy
said, is a photographer and editor.
Despite their specific titles
on their business cards, “All the
staff and I don’t necessarily have
job titles, we do on our business
cards so people know who to call
for certain things,” Hilmy said.
“Everyone has the same percentage of invested input and decision
making.
“I’d always like to foster the
MO of getting everyone’s opinion
and eventually making the founding gents almost partner status.”
Hilmy’s philosophy has boded
well for the company, as they
continue to gain bigger clients
and more of them. Most recently,
they’ve been commissioned to
do work with a new bar in town,
Accenture and Texas A&M-San
Antonio.
Their Facebook page is plastered with their work and shows
the quality. It shows off the talented team’s style from their video
reel, to huge printed canvases to
personal projects, like the one
Hilmy created called “Dogue.”
It is a play on Vogue, the fashion
magazine, but features a dog on
the cover rather than your typical
model. It’s pretty awesome.
As the business grows Hilmy
fears some of the unknown but
shared that with his team, despite
their age, together, they can accomplish anything.
“When we walk into a room and
clients see I’m 25, that your office
manager is 25 and the oldest person in your company is in the late
20s, it raises an eyebrow, but isn’t
so much met with resistance. Clients take it as a sign of some kind
of novel, fresh way of thinking
and us bringing something fresh to
the table they haven’t seen.
“We’re going to shake it up and
we see things different…through
rose-colored glasses if you will.”
