and love: Raul Flores’s story

Everything in life moves to a
rhythm and beat. Some say that
music is the language of the Earth
and proof that there is something
greater watching over each of
us. To some, music is a hobby.
To others it’s a lifestyle. To one
young man, it’s a gift that needs
to be shared.
Raul Flores is a 27-year-old
student at San Antonio College.
He‘s been working full-time
at downtown Nix Health since
2012. Flores wasn’t sure how he
could turn his passion of music
into something bigger–a positive
impact on others lives. It wasn’t
until observant nurse Michelle
Flaig noticed Flores’ love for
music and suggested something
that would pave his path: music
therapy. After some research on
the healing power of music, Raul
knew his calling.
“I started visiting my grandpa
at the nursing home and I would
take my guitar and play to him.
It really inspired me to want to
help people,” Flores said. “Once
he passed, I felt this deep need to

Regreso a clases significa regreso al tráfico y a las prisas en
las mañanas para llegar a tiempo
a la escuela. Es por esto que los
conductores de Texas necesitan
recordar que manejar amigable es
manejar con seguridad.
Las autopistas de Texas han
visto el incremento de un 13.2 por
ciento en fatalidades de peatones,
y un 19.1 por ciento de fatalidades
en ciclistas, esto ha sido del 2011 al

Everything is bigger in Texas
– including the bad. According
to Congressman Joaquin Castro,
Texas has the highest rate of uninsured residents at a whopping
26 percent. That amounts to approximately six million people
without health insurance.
With medical insurance being
so pricey, many small businesses struggle to provide insurance
to their employees. Due to that,
it’s also a disadvantage to hire
more people. Many blame this
on Governor Rick Perry’s denial
of Medicaid expansion. By doing this, Perry turned away billions of dollars that would have
helped a little more than one
million of its poorer residents.
“I know that as a Texas Legislator, we missed one golden
opportunity. The folks that’ll
miss out are those that make the
lowest wages – unfortunately,
because of one man’s decision,” Senator Leticia Van de
Putte said.

Snowden: ¿traidor o no?

Claro, nadie quiere otro atentados del 11 de septiembre de
2001. Nadie.
Salvo al-Qaida y otros grupos
terroristas. Las encuestas son
inequívocas; los estadounidenses
quieren que su gobierno haga
todo lo que sea necesario para
evitar otro ataque terrorista como
el que costó la vida a casi 3 mil
personas en 2001.
Pero una cosa es esperar que tu
gobierno te proteja de ataques del
exterior y otra, muy distinta, es
que se utilice esto como excusa
para espiar tus correos electrónicos y tus llamadas telefónicas.
El programa de espionaje del
gobierno de Estados Unidos que reveló Edward Snowden, el
excontratista de la Agencia de
Seguridad Nacional de Estados
Unidos (NSA, en sus siglas
en inglés), al diario británico
The Guardian - es mucho más
extenso de lo que se pensó originalmente.
Estados Unidos copia casi
todos los mensajes que los
estadounidenses envían o reciben hacia y desde el exterior,
según la investigación que hizo
el reportero Charlie Savage
del periódico The New York
Times (aquí está el link: nyti.
ms/1cxVosO). Y luego funcionarios de la Agencia de
Unidos buscan entre todos esos
correos y números telefónicos,
las palabras clave o referencias
que pudieran sugerir un plan
terrorista.
El caso es que, sin ningún
tipo de orden judicial, se está
espiando y reuniendo esta información. Cierto, quizás esa información le permitió al gobierno
de Estados Unidos, por ejemplo,
saber qué al-Qaida preparaba
un ataque contra su embajada
en Yemen y así se tomaron
amplias medidas de precaución
en todo el Oriente Medio. Pero
el problema es que gran parte
de la información que se está
copiando y escaneando es de
índole personal - datos íntimos
y confidenciales que no tienen
absolutamente nada que ver con
terroristas y criminales.
“Quien nada debe, nada
teme,” me recuerdan en Twitter cuando hablo de los abusos
de los programas de espionaje
gubernamental. Pero no se trata
de que tengamos algo que esconder. El punto está en que no
debemos permitir que ningún
gobierno interfiera en nuestra
vida privada sin justificación
legal.
¿Por qué un agente de la
Agencia de Seguridad Nacional
de Estados Unidos tiene que
enterarse de quién es la persona a quien amo, del dinero
que presto o me prestan, con
quién me peleo, adónde planeo
ir de vacaciones o lo que de
verdad pienso de mi vecino?
Esto viola la cuarta enmienda
de la constitución de Estados
Unidos que, con toda claridad,
advierte contra investigaciones
injustificadas.
Estamos hablando de espionaje masivo. Los documentos
que Snowden filtró a The Guardian indicaron que sólo en el pasado mes de marzo la Agencia de
Unidos obtuvo 97.000 millones
de datos producto del espionaje
de emails y números telefónicos.
La mayoría fueron obtenidos
de personas en Pakistán e Irán,
pero un 3 por ciento de esos
datos provinieron de personas
en Estados Unidos. De forma
que el gobierno tuvo acceso y
procesó los correos electrónicos de decenas de millones de
estadounidenses sin que ellos
lo supieran. En sólo en un mes.
No sabríamos nada de esto si
Snowden se hubiera quedado
callado. Hoy sabemos que el
gobierno de Estados Unidos
tiene un masivo programa de
espionaje que incluye a sus
propios ciudadanos.
¿Es Snowden un traidor?
Obama no lo quiso decir así. En
su última conferencia de prensa
dijo que Snowden “no era un
patriota.” Por supuesto que al
presidente no le gustó que se
supiera que su política de seguridad nacional es casi idéntica
a la de George W. Bush, a quien
tanto criticó como candidato. Y
aunque Obama anunció en su
última conferencia de prensa
que quiere hacer todo el proceso
más abierto y transparente, no
ha sugerido que va a detener sus
prácticas de espionaje dentro y
fuera de Estados Unidos.
Snowden, para muchos, no
es un traidor; es sencillamente
un “soplón,” un informante de
un abuso gubernamental. Es
cierto que Snowden rompió su
compromiso, firmado, de no
difundir información secreta del
gobierno, pero prefirió denunciar lo que para él era un abuso
que quedarse callado. Y ahora
está pagando las consecuencias.
Snowden consiguió un asilo
temporal en Rusia. Pero ¿podría
tener un juicio justo en Estados
Unidos? Obviamente él no lo
cree así. Por eso no ha regresado
a casa. El soldado Bradley Manning, que hizo algo parecido a lo
de Snowden - en el 2010 filtró
más de 700 mil documentos secretos a Wikileaks - fue encontrado culpable de 19 cargos en
su contra y pudiera pasar hasta
90 años en la cárcel.
No, nadie quiere otro ataque
terrorista en suelo norteamericano. Sí, el gobierno debe hacer
todo lo posible para evitar que
esto ocurra. Pero espiar a todos
para ver quien cae no es lo que
se espera de la democracia más
poderosa del mundo.
Big Brother no es ficción.

An overview of the just ended
legislative session
State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte
Earlier this month, the 83rd
Texas Legislature finally went
home. After a regular session
that ran from January through
May, and then three special
sessions called by the Governor,
we’re done with current business and enjoy returning to our
districts and our families.
It didn’t have to take this
long, of course — the badly
needed transportation funding
bill that finally passed in the
third special session probably
could have been accomplished
sooner if the Governor hadn’t
unnecessarily added divisive
social issues to the special session calls. The fight over bills
around women’s health care and
reproductive decisions slowed
the process down and caused
time to run out in the first two
sessions. That’s precious time
that could have been devoted to
focusing on the infrastructure
of our state — something all
Texans can agree on, even if we
have differing opinions on how
to fund our water and highway
needs.
Despite the delays, an agreement was finally reached, although it still needs approval
from you, the voter. The propos-
al will send half of the oil and
gas tax revenue currently going
into the state’s Economic Stabilization Fund (aka the “Rainy
Day Fund”) and use it on road
construction and maintenance.
Final approval of this idea must
come in the November 2014
elections from a constitutional
amendment on the ballot.
But that’s for next year’s
voters. This year’s voters will
decide the fate of nine proposed
constitutional amendments in an
election to be held November
5, 2013.
Secretary of State John Steen
recently announced the ballot
order for the amendments. To
read about all of the amendments, I encourage you to go to
the Secretary’s website at www.
sos.state.tx.us/about/newsreleases/2013/080513.shtml, and
I’ll discuss them more as the
election approaches. For right
now, though, I want to call attention to Propositions 1 and 4,
which I sponsored in the Texas
Senate. Both propositions will
aid military and veteran families.
Prop. 1 will allow the Legislature to grant a full or partial
property tax exemption on the
homestead of Gold Star Spouses
— men or women whose military spouse was killed in action.
After all those families have
sacrificed for our nation, they
should not be burdened with
property taxes. It’s the least we
can do to give back our respect
and gratitude.
Prop. 4 similarly will grant
full or partial property tax exemptions, this time on homesteads that were donated by
a charitable organization to a
partially disabled veteran (or if
he/she is deceased, to the surviving spouse). If these charities
are kind enough to help out our
warriors in need, it doesn’t make
sense to then evict those veterans because of tax foreclosure
— this will alleviate that burden.
Last month, I and 25 of my
Senate colleagues sent a letter
to the House Armed Services
Committee asking it to intervene
on behalf of 2,200 Texans who
serve as Military Technicians
who are being inappropriately furloughed by the Department of Defense. These unpaid
furloughs were resulting in a
roughly 20 percent pay cut for
the MILTECHs, as well as thousands of other civilian military
employees.
I’m happy to report that the
Defense Department recognized
the impact on both the morale
and financial bottom lines of
these employees, and earlier this
month announced a reduction in
the furlough days. Since early
July, these employees were being required to take one day off
per week for a total of 11 days,
but the Pentagon found enough
savings in the final months of
the current fiscal year to reduce
those days to six.
These MILTECHs are very
important to training and readiness of the National Guard, and
the cuts were coming at the
height of hurricane and wildfire
season, when readiness of the
Guard needs to be at its highest
level. Also, a 20 percent pay cut
could be catastrophic for families at the lower end of the pay
scale, possibly making many
eligible for food stamps.
I’m grateful that this burden
will now be reduced.

TxDOT offers possible 60-day moratorium
on gravel road conversions
State Senator Carlos Uresti
The Texas Department of
Transportation on Tuesday agreed
to a conditional 60-day moratorium on converting paved roads to
gravel in West and South Texas,
following discussions with state
Sen. Carlos Uresti and several
other state legislators and county
officials.
“I appreciate TxDOT’s willingness to work with the Legislature and local communities on
this important issue,” Uresti said.
“It is critically important that
counties be given an opportunity
to find alternatives to tearing up
paved roads.”
TxDOT recently announced
that it would begin converting
some 83 miles of paved highways in West and South Texas
into gravel roads, beginning with
Dimmit, one of the Eagle Ford
Shale counties in Senate District
19. The plan prompted Uresti
and Sen. Glenn Hegar to seek a
meeting with TxDOT Executive
Director Phil Wilson to discuss
the agency’s plan.
Under the agreement with
Wilson, a county must submit a
letter requesting the 60-day moratorium, which TxDOT would then
review. The agency could then
approve the moratorium, giving
the county an opportunity to find
alternatives. However, roads that
are in dire need or disrepair could
still be converted.
“TxDOT was hasty in its decision to proceed with this plan
without any input from the Legislature or local officials,” Uresti
said. “Today’s meeting was very
positive because now everyone is
at the table. It is crucial that we
keep the lines of communication
open and work together.”
Along with Uresti, Wilson
and other TxDOT representatives, the meeting was attended
by state Sen. Judith Zaffirini and
Rep. Tracy King, representatives
of other legislators, and officials
from Atascosa, Dimmit, La Salle,
Live Oak, McMullen, and Wilson
counties.
Uresti said the next step is
getting legislative leaders more
involved, holding town hall meetings in affected counties to get
more local input, and widen the
number of stakeholders.
“The oil and gas industry must
get involved as well,” Uresti said.
“It must be part of the solution.”

Latinos need more
than an apple a day
Disturbing reports have been
released by the South Texas
Health Status Review and the
Institute for Health Promotion
Research that paints a bleak picture for the Latino population.

San Antonio is quoted as saying
that cancer is increasing and for
Latinos is becoming a leading
cause of death.
The reasons cited in the studies center around diet and obesity. It’s no secret that San
Antonio has a weight problem,
despite the fact that the city has
seen a drop in its overall weight
thanks to the mayor’s efforts to
get San Antonio fit.
Nonetheless, the prescription
is a deadly one. Despite being
the fastest growing demographic, the lives of young Latinos are
being hampered.
Cancer is the one disease
that’s affecting that age group.
Dr. Ramirez added that deaths
among Latinos that can be tied
to cancer are increasing and
once again diet and weight are
the main reason for those death
or illnesses.
It’s not just those factors,
however. The reports go on
to say that the problem can
be fixed. The way that can be
done, according to Dr. Ramirez,
changes are needed in both diets
and lifestyles.
Unfortunately, in many South
Texas areas available recreation
and healthy food choices are
considerably limited.
The change in a person’s
lifestyle is easier than their diet.
The city is doing its part by
providing workout equipment
at numerous of its parks. In
some of those green spaces, the
city has changed the hours that
the grounds are open, thereby
allowing park users’ access for
longer hours.
Even Fiesta is being targeted.
Since becoming mayor, Julián
Castro has stepped up an effort
he first introduced in his days as
a city councilman from District
7. Now the mayor encourages
San Antonio to eat healthy during the city’s 10-day block party
by substituting an occasional
salad or fruit treat for the traditional fajita taco, gordita or
any other delightful food, yet
unhealthy food that makes up
Fiesta.
Still it’s not enough. Dr.
Ramirez said that because of the
condition that’s affecting the Latino population, this generation
will be sicker than their parents
and in many instances may not
live as long as did their parents.
As stated they are very disturbing reports on the Latino
experience. Definitely food for
thought.

enfermedades.
Sin embargo, no sólo son esos
factores. Los reportes hasta dicen
que el problema se puede arreglar.
La manera en que se puede hacer,
de acuerdo con la Dra. Ramirez,
es que se necesitan hacer cambios
tanto en las dietas como en los
estilos de vida.
Desafortunadamente, en muchas áreas del Sur de Texas, las
áreas de recreación y los alimentos
saludables disponibles están considerablemente limitados.
El cambio en el estilo de vida
de una persona es más fácil que el
cambio de su dieta. La ciudad está
haciendo su parte proporcionando
equipo de ejercicios en una cantidad numerosa de sus parques. En
algunos de esos espacios verdes, la
Ciudad ha cambiado los horarios
en que están abiertos, permitiendo
de este modo que los usuarios
tengan acceso al parque por más
horas.
Hasta se están enfocando en
Fiesta. Desde que Julián Castro
se convirtió en alcalde, ha incrementado un esfuerzo que introdujo
primero en sus días como Concejal
de la Ciudad por el Distrito 7.
Ahora, el Alcalde recomienda a
San Antonio a comer saludable
durante la fiesta de la cuadra de
10 días de la Ciudad sustituyendo
ocasionalmente con una ensalada
o fruta el tradicional taco de fajita,
gordita o cualquier otra deliciosa
comida, pero comida nada saludable que se ofrece en Fiesta.
Y todavía no es suficiente. La
Dra. Ramírez dijo que debido a
la condición que está afectando
a la población de Latinos, esta
generación será más enfermiza
que la de sus padres y en muchos
casos, pueden no vivir tanto como
vivieron sus padres.
Como se afirmó, son reportes
muy alarmantes sobre la experiencia de los Latinos. Definitivamente, algo para reflexionar.

Cuando eres chico tu mente
está llena de ideas y metas que
deseas cumplir, sin embargo
conforme va pasando el tiempo
y se va acercando la hora de que
comiences a trabajar en ello,
muchos de esos objetivos se
van desvaneciendo o quedan en
el olvido.
Retrocede un poco el tiempo y
trata de recordar cuáles eran algunas de las metas que deseabas
cumplir cuando eras chico.
En mi caso, yo siempre dije
que quería ser cantante, dar las
noticias y ser “turista”. Decía
que quería ser turista, en lugar
de decir que quería estudiar
turismo. Aunque son dos cosas
muy distintas, digamos que están
relacionadas y requieren viajar o
explorar nuevos sitios.
De mis metas, no cumplí ser
cantante, sin embargo sí llegué
a cantar frente a grandes públicos muchas veces. Dar las
noticias no lo he logrado aún,
sin embargo estoy trabajando
en ello aún para llegar a hacerlo
más adelante. Pero lo que no he
cumplido y ni siquiera me he
tomado el tiempo de ahorrar para
hacerlo, es ser “turista”.
No he viajado mucho como
dije que quería hacerlo, sin
embargo no creo que sea tarde
para comenzar a forjar ese viejo
y olvidado objetivo.
Una meta a largo plazo no
toma un par de días en realizarse,
sin embargo se puede comenzar
con metas a corto plazo para
hacerse del hábito.
¿Cómo lograr un objetivo?
Es más sencillo de lo que
imaginamos. Se trata de comenzar a dirigir nuestra atención al
objetivo primario, aquel que es
el más importante de todos los
que te has propuesto en la vida,
el que te proporcionará mayor
felicidad.
Primero elige un único objetivo.
Define todas las tareas que son
necesarias para cumplirlo.
Pon prioridad en las tareas de
mayor importancia, y después
haz las de menor importancia.
Comprométete a llevarlas a
cabo.
Realiza cada día acciones que
ayuden a cumplir esas tareas.
Finalmente, no pierdas el
enfoque, ya que te aseguro que
cuando menos imagines, ya
estarás disfrutando de eso que
tanto soñaste.
Esos son los pasos que debes
seguir para lograr un objetivo,
pero ten mucho cuidado, ya que
este desarrollo personal también va ligado a un problema
muy grande: tener un sinfín de
objetivos.
Este problema es común en
muchas personas, ya que tienen
demasiados objetivos que desean
cumplir y quieren lograrlos todos
al mismo tiempo. Lo que pasa
con esto es que toda tu energía
va a ser distribuida en tantas
tareas que perderás el enfoque y
el proceso será muy lento.
Cualquiera que sea tu objetivo,
sin importar la edad que tengas,
comienza por seguir estos pasos
y verás resultados positivos.
Algunos objetivos toman mucho
tiempo y otros menos, pero si tu
desempeño es grande, también
disfrutarás el camino que te llevará a lograrlo.
La Consolidación de Deudas
Muchos piensan que la consolidación de deudas es como
una barita mágica que le borra su
historial, le paga las deudas y le
da un sentido de borrón y cuenta
nueva. Bueno, para serles sincero, ¡la consolidación de deudas es
una estafa! Consolidar las deudas típicamente le ahorra poco en
intereses porque está poniendo
préstamos de bajo interés junto
con todo. Usted incluye préstamos médicos donde no paga intereses; o tal vez un préstamo de
carro al cero porciento junto con
todo lo demás. Lo que sucede es
que nunca analizamos bien el resultado final. “Andrés, es que yo
quiero un solo pago, no importa
que pague más en intereses,” o
“ya estoy harta de tantos pagos
chiquitos y quiero un sólo pago.”
Quiero que escuche esto muy
bien, ¡no puede seguir pidiendo
prestado para salir de sus deudas!

The 2013-2014 school year is
underway for San Antonio public
schools. Across the city business
and civic groups did their part to
insure that the children had what
they needed to get the year off on
the right foot.
Among those groups was the
Deputy Sheriff’s Association of
Bexar County who was part of
the “Shop with a Sheriff” Backto-School event. The rank and
file was on hand at the Walmart
on Jones-Maltsberger Rd. They
were able to pass out supplies,

Just a Thought: “Making a

Last week I posed the question,
“Am I making a difference?”
I also alluded to the movie
“It’s a Wonderful Life,” with actor Jimmy Stewart, (aka George
Bailey) who in the course of the
movie questioned if he made a
difference in people’s lives. Of
course as the story line goes, the
answer was a resounding, “yes”
after it was pointed out how life for
his community would have been
drastically altered for the worse
had he never been born.
For those of us who are in our
senior years I believe on many occasions we find ourselves in that
situation revisiting and reminiscing
on our own personal history and
determining how we affected those
around us good, or bad. Sometimes
the reviews are mixed as judged
by others.
Imagine if like in the movie,
we could have our own personal
Clarence the Angel showing us
snippets of our life and contrasting that with snippets of the same
scenario without us in it to, “make
a difference?”
That is a powerful thought. We
could go crazy constantly asking
ourselves, “What If?”
As a retired teacher I know I
affected thousands of young lives
one way or another. The real question however, was it a positive effect? The student’s answers would
obviously determine that. Many
other teachers and firefighters and
doctors are probably asking the
same questions of themselves.
Throughout history we have
revered famous people and their
contributions to society. President
Abe Lincoln suffered depression
or melancholy as they called it
in those days during his life. It
is recorded he questioned many
of his decisions as President and
agonized over them constantly
wondering if he was “making a
difference.”
The good news is history has
treated him well for his contributions in affecting the everyday lives
of Americans and especially of the
African-American community.

“make a difference” in small ways
as well. Sharing an encouraging
word with someone, being a good
listener, or simply opening doors
for people or helping the elderly,
feeding the hungry, finding shelter
for the homeless, are just some of
the ways to do so.
Like me unfortunately, many
people think that to “make a difference” we have to make a big
splash, garner headlines, be honored by the Chamber of Commerce, patted on the back and
touted as a hero when in reality it is
the little things that count touching
people’s lives one at a time.
In an attempt to follow my
own sage advice, let me close the
column by reiterating it is not the
headlines that “make the difference” unless the story behind the
headlines touches people in such
a way as to make the headline
worthwhile.
Hopefully my writing a column
for La Prensa makes a big difference too. But then again, only you
the reader can determine that one.
Anyway, as always, what I write
is “Just a Thought.”

Deputy Sheriff’s Association and
St. Peter-St. Joseph have teamed
up and both are very excited about
working together.
“St. PJs is extremely grateful
to the generosity and selflessness
of DSABC,” St. Peter-St. Joseph
Children’s Home CEO James
Castro explained. “This group of
Law Enforcement professionals
continues to excel within the community and this is another great
example of just that.”

“The idea is that the sign should
complete something what was
started back in 1927 when this
historic church and hall were
built, the sign architecturally connects to the historic structures that
are already here,” Treviño said,
“We’re hoping that it looks like
it belongs.”
Despite the groundbreaking
only representing the installment
of the sign with the parks new
name, Treviño sees it as a catalyst
for the entire Little Italy project.
“The whole point of the sign
is to kick-off what we’ve been
pushing for, which is that the park

becomes similar to La Villita, but
instead of having all these shops
with an old Mexico feel, they will
have an Italian slant,” Treviño
said.
Once the shops are constructed,
Italian-inspired homes will be built
behind the historic church and hall.
“We’re recreating a whole community, we have a park, we’ve got
a church, the hall, we’ll have residences, we’ll have shops, maybe
a small restaurant, a deli, a place
for gelato, if you lived here you
wouldn’t have to go anywhere,”
Treviño said. “It’ll be a microcosm
of a community.”
Although the ideas are bountiful
for Treviño and The Christopher
Columbus Italian Society, the
money is scarce.
“We see it as a phase project,

Antonio, Frank Monaco, says the
primary purpose of the project is
to honor those who founded the
Christopher Columbus Italian
Society in 1890.
“They had no money, couldn’t
speak English, but they gathered
together and helped other Italian
immigrants come over and establish business,” Monaco said.
Until the 1960s, the Italian community in San Antonio dominated
the land set aside for Little Italy.
“Everyone would gather around
the church for baptisms, weddings
and funerals, this church and this
hall were the center of the community,” Monaco said.
With the expansion of the city
and intrusion of highways on the
land, the Italian community went
their separate ways, putting a
strain on the church and hall.
“Our idea is to bring the people
back here, back to the church, back
to the hall, back to their roots,”
Monaco said.
Given that the first generation
immigrants left such an invaluable
heritage with the church and hall,
Frank Pantuso, an active member
of the society for 71 years, says
it’s the society’s duty to leave
something behind.
“Little Italy has got to be the
answer,” Pantuso stressed, “I just
hope I’m here when they cut the
ribbon.”

Care Act. The act provides assistance to those who cannot
pay for insurance and help small
businesses provide it at competitive and affordable rates. It
would also cut denial of insurance because of pre-existing
conditions.
Castro and Van de Putte are
trying to get the word out and
encourage local small businesses to give the Affordable
Care Act a chance. Enrollment
for the program begins on October 1.
“The small business healthcare tax credit has already been
used by 360,000 small businesses, to help insure two mil-
lion workers. Starting January
2014, up to 129 million Americans with pre-existing health
conditions can no longer be
denied coverage by insurers,”
Castro said.
Approximately four million
small businesses are eligible
for the tax credit. The credit has
already helped cut up to 35 percent of insurance rates, but will
increase to 50 percent in 2014.
“As we know, with any new
reform, there is going to be
issues that we need to work together on. The more we know,
the more we can live in a community that will not be devastated by the cost of illnesses,”
Van de Putte said.

where Ms. Connie Rodriguez has
been bedridden for the past week.
“Let me play something for
you. I want you to close your eyes
and imagine that you are going to
get better. It’s within you,” Flores
told Rodriguez.
The small hospital room is
filled with emotion. Player and
instrument are one – Raul sings
with such feeling, and his guitar
obliges. Every note is filled with
love. The intensity crescendos,
reverbs and ends with a soft finish. Rodriguez and her daughter,
Esme, are crying.
“That music–it does something
here,” Rodriguez said through
tears, pointing to her heart. “It
feels so warm. Thank you, for the
music,” she hugs Flores from her
hospital bed.
“This is a true labor of love. It’s
very humbling and emotionally
rewarding. In a way, it’s esoteric.
People have the power to cure
themselves. I just give them the
love and attention they never had.
Many stay here for an extended
period of time because of that.
The miracle is inside of you. You
have to want to want it yourself,”

Manning Award (nation’s top
QB) watch list earlier this month,
owns a 12-8 record (.600) in
two seasons as UTSA’s starting
quarterback. He is the program’s
all-time leading passer (338-for589/4,233 yards/34 TDs) and
rusher by attempts (162 for 649
yards).
The Beeville native is coming
off a junior campaign that saw
him complete 166-of-282 (58.9
percent) passes for 2,085 yards
and 20 touchdowns, including
a program-record four at No. 22
Louisiana Tech (Nov. 3). His
314 passing yards against the
Bulldogs and 82-yard TD toss
to Kenny Bias at New Mexico
State (Sept. 29) also were school
marks. The 6-foot, 210-pounder
threw just three interceptions
and, at one time, went a Football
Bowl Subdivision-leading 256
passes between picks. He also ran
for 364 yards and six TDs on 67
carries (5.4 avg.) and tied a program record with three rushing
scores at Idaho (Nov. 17).

beat us with a girl on your team,”
is a line from the popular teen
movie, “She’s the Man,” starring
Amanda Bynes and Channing
Tatum.
The movie is about a girl
(Bynes) pretending to be her
brother while he’s away in London, just for the chance to play
soccer at his school with the
boys. It was the perfect example
of women’s struggle in sports.
Throughout the history of
sports, women have been discredited for both their knowledge
and ability to participate. Women
though, have fought back. Trailblazers like Billie Jean King,
Robin Roberts, and Pat Summit
have overcome tremendous obstacles and inspired us all.
With their constant efforts,
a “man’s world” has now been
open to women around the world.
Young girls across America and
globally, are participating more
and more in sports. Female professional sports leagues are on
the rise.
Many women surprisingly get
paid twice, even three times as
much playing sports overseas
than here in America. America
doesn’t have as much of an open
mind to women sports leagues,
but they are here.
The WNBA has made strides
the past 16 years to give young
aspiring female basketball players an opportunity to highlight
their skills. The league’s popularity has a varied fan base, but they
have survived. On a constant to
bring in sponsors for the league,
the WNBA looks to the general
public for support. The reason I
talk about the WNBA is because
it was a personal dream of mine
to play in this league.
Another reason is the fact that
San Antonio has its own team.
Yes, other than our Spurs, there is
another professional sports team
in this city. They are the San Antonio Silver Stars and have one of
the best fan bases in the WNBA.
Come out and support the other
silver and black. Personally,
sports have been my entire life
for as long as I can remember. I
personally thank Robin Roberts
for opening the world of sports
reporting to women. She knew
the potential disaster and smug
comments that could be made
heading into ESPN, but she is a
success.
Now Hannah Storm and Suzy
Collins have continued the women’s momentum in the “man’s
world.” Every day walls are
breaking down. Whether society
accepts it, times are changing
and it’s about time we started
opening eyes.
And guys, it’s time to take
down the “No Girls Allowed”
sign because we’re coming in.

Houston Oilers in 1978 and went
on to win Rookie of the Year

content for all IMSA-sanctioned
development series, including the
Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, Lamborghini Super Trofeo,
Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge by
Yokohama and Ultra 94 Porsche

Michelin.
“The strategic acquisition of
IMSA.com enables us to simplify
access to digital content for all our
series through one portal,” said
IMSA Chief Executive Officer,

Thirty-one years ago, Rose Ann
Martinez began working at University Presbyterian Children’s
Center in the Monte Vista neighborhood as a substitute teacher,
and has no desire to leave yet.
“It’s the kids who keep me
here,” said Martinez, who teaches
2- and 3-year-olds.
The University Presbyterian
Children’s Center (UPCC) provides high-quality, early childhood education while promoting

El día se presentaba caluroso
y húmedo en Miami, Florida.
Era uno de esos días en que la
temperatura y la humedad ejercen
sobre el ánimo de las personas una
influencia nociva. Bob Moore,
propietario de una ferretería,
estaba atendiendo a sus clientes,
tratando de no sudar demasiado.
De pronto se abrió la puerta y
entró un hombre. Tenía la mirada
extraviada, el rostro congestionado, la camisa abierta y, lo más
terrible, un arma automática en
la mano. Abrió fuego contra el
público, y mató a seis personas.
Me corté... Con una navaja
somete a Dios. Y la furia sólo
de vez en cuando toma esas dimensiones trágicas del suceso de
Miami. A veces la furia es silenciosa, pero mata el compañerismo
y nubla el goce de las relaciones
humanas.
Tenemos, por ejemplo, el enojo
severo y profundo que suele
producirse entre marido y mujer.
Quizá nunca llegue a estallar en
furia, pero destruye igualmente la
armonía y la felicidad. Porque cuando hay enojo, no hay palabras,
no hay sonrisas, no hay felicidad.
La Biblia dice: «Refrena tu
enojo, abandona la ira; no te irrites, pues esto conduce al mal.
Porque los impíos serán exterminados, pero los que esperan

Market Square como homenaje
a la memoria de Willie “El Curro” Champion recientemente
fallecido y quien con su guitarra
flamenca dejo una senda por la
cual se encaminan ahora niños
y jóvenes con talento y aspiraciones musicales.
La academia de Teresa Champion es una de las instituciones
más antiguas de renombre en
Texas y que ofrece enseñanza
de bailes folklóricos en el estilo
español y mexicano, y es uno de
los grupos más representativos
para mostrar las tradiciones de
la ciudad de San Antonio ante
el copioso turismo que visita
nuestra ciudad.

Silver Stars con éxito celebraron tributo a sobrevivientes de cáncer

Con la recaudación de $62,550
por venta de uniformes y otras
prendas color de rosa que jugadores vistieron y fueron puestas
en venta al mejor postor en
concurrida subasta, la gerencia
general del club San Antonio Silver Stars en conjunto con la fun-
dación Silver & Black Give Back
(SBGB), la noche del sábado 17
de agosto, con éxito celebraron
la fecha dedicada a la “Breast
Health Awareness Night”, evento
que también celebran plazas del
baloncesto femenil profesional
asociadas a la Women’s National
Basketball Association (WNBA).
Stars en su partido contra las
visitantes Mercury de Phoenix,
anotaron su novena victoria de
la temporada, posteriormente
al partido fans se apostaron en
las secciones 20, 22 y 24 del
AT&T Center para ser parte de
la subasta.
El dinero recaudado será donado en partes, a la unidad móvil
CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Mobile
Mammography Unit (MMU), y
al programa juvenil de SBGB.
La cantidad arriba cita supero a la
subasta de la temporada del 2012,
en la que Stars recaudo $41,200.
El entrenador Dan Hughes,
donó su tenis color de rosa,
para ser subastados, indicando
lo siguiente. “Hoy es la primera
ocasión que usé calzado color
de rosa, sin embargo no será la
última”.
La cancha por primera vez
en la historia de la WNBA fue
decorada color de rosa, el trabajo de pintura fue realizado
por voluntariado integrado por
sobrevivientes de cáncer, así
como personal de Stars y SBGB.
La unidad MMU, seguirá
apoyando programas en la detección y prevención del cáncer
de mama en los 13 condados y
la periferia de San Antonio que
anualmente visita llevando alivio
a personas de escasos recursos
económicos.
“Esta es una buena causa, Stars
siempre han estado a la vanguardia proporcionando ayuda a organizaciones de salud. Es de gran
importancia que la comunidad
acuda a realizarse exámenes para
así prevenir y detectar el cáncer”,
dijo el Dr. Dámaso A. Oliva Jr.
M.D., quien acompañado de su
familia estuvo presente en el
partido apoyando a Stars y rindiéndole homenaje a sobrevivientes
de cáncer.

La Gloria, una probadita de mi México lindo

Esta semana es Culinaria en la
ciudad del Álamo, y por esto La
Prensa se ha dedicado a visitar
algunos de los restaurantes más
solicitados por los amantes de la
comida. La Gloria es uno de ellos,
ya que se ha convertido en uno
de los favoritos de la gente latina
y de la comunidad anglosajona
también.
Ubicada en el 100 de la calle E
Grayson, este restaurante ofrece
antojitos mexicanos que incluyen
desde tostadas de carne deshebrada, tortas ahogadas, flautas y tacos,
hasta frijoles charros, totopos con
salsa y elotes preparados.
Para comenzar, me encontré
con un pequeño inconveniente,
pero que al mismo tiempo me dijo
mucho. Tuve que esperar casi 25
minutos para que me asignaran
una mesa, ya que había una fila de
espera de más de 4 familias.
Decidí esperar y mientras tanto
me ofrecieron una deliciosa bebida compuesta por pepino, kiwi,
hierbabuena, limón y licor. Así
como esta bebida refrescante,
existen muchas otras compuestas
por sabores exóticos que le harán
transportarse a los lugares más
cálidos de México.
Una vez asignada mi mesa,

ordené una canasta con totopos y
salsa de la casa. A pesar de que son
totopos originales estilo México,
no me dejó muy buena impresión el
hecho de que me los cobraran, pues
es muy raro que en algún lugar te
cobren los totopos y la salsa.
Después, ordené un elote preparado, y permítanme decirles lo
siguiente: ¡Qué cosa tan más rica!
El elote es asado y lleva mantequilla, queso Cotija y chile en polvo.
Después, una tostada de carne
deshebrada. Al parecer el mesero
se equivocó y me trajo una tostada
de cochinita pibil, lo cual no me
influyó en lo absoluto, ya que la
cochinita estaba deliciosa, en su
punto y deshaciéndose de suave y
tierna. El sabor era muy bueno, ya
que además de la cochinita lleva
lechuga rallada, tomate, rodajas
de cebolla morada, crema y queso.
Otro de los platillos que recomiendo es la torta. La Gloria
cuenta con varios tipos de tortas,
y cualquiera que se ordene es
recomendable, en especial la torta
ahogada, si es que usted es amante
del puerco.
Un detalle de La Gloria es que
sus aguas frescas de tamarindo,
Jamaica y Horchata, entre otras,
no son hechas ahí. Las aguas son
preparadas con paquetes de sabores
que ya vienen procesados.
Realmente recomiendo este
restaurante para comer en familia,
con amigos o hasta de reunión de
trabajo.

Smiling phases: Remembering Richard Garza

The city of San Antonio lost
one of its most overlooked musical treasures, Richard Garza,
the driving force behind such
musical acts as the Dell-Kings,
Los Blues, Road Apple, and
the 1950’s doo-wop group, The
Pharaohs, departed this world on
August 16, 2013.
The 73-year-old drummer,
a graduate of Burbank High
School, started playing trumpet
in the junior high school band
thanks to his brother Mike who
purchased the trumpet for a mere
$15. One evening, Richard, who
had a natural feel for the drums,
was asked to sit in for Trini Damayo, and the rest was history.
I had the great fortune of meeting Garza at the Dell-Kings/Los
Blues Reunion last month during
the “Talk to Me: San Antonio
Chicano Soul” exhibit at South
Texas Popular Culture Center,
also known as TEXPOP. The
remaining band members were
very humbled to have been honored and reunited with each other
again that day.
In 1956, Richard Garza, Randy
Garibay, Joe Perez, and Duke
Anthony started one of the
first all Chicano vocal groups
called The Pharaohs, who started
performing at The Eastwood
Country Club on San Antonio’s
far-east side. Duke is now the
only surviving member and was
kind enough to reflect on his time
with Garza.
“Richard was a beautiful cat
and a great musician. We’ve
known each other since we were
11 years old and we were inseparable in those days. We had a lot
of fun back then, and I remember
my mother used to do our band
laundry and she would have all
of our socks color coded so we
knew whose socks belonged to
whom. She would say to him,
‘The red socks are Duke’s, the
white ones are yours. Quit wearing Duke’s,’” He recalled with a
great laugh. “He was a character
and we’ll miss him terribly. He
was my brother.”
Frank Rodarte, the former
bandleader of the Dell-Kings
and Los Blues said, “Richard
will go down in history as one
of the greatest unknown ‘singing drummers’ to ever come
out of Texas. He never got the
proper recognition he so richly
deserved.”
Beside all of Garza’s music
brothers, not many people may
realize that Richard and Randy
(Garibay) were so talented that
they were the only two guys
who were in all three lineups of
the Dell-Kings, Los Blues, and
Road Apple.
Cleto Escobedo, of Cleto and
The Cletones, the house band
for Jimmy Kimmel Live! Show,
provided his thoughts on Richard
and his musical legacy.
“A lot of people really didn’t
know how heavy he was into music; he was constantly practicing,
listening, and very serious about
his music and he loved his craft.
He was the champ of what we
called the ‘Texas double shuffle.” Escobedo recounted, “He
had great sense of humor and
was always laughing or making
faces at us while drumming and
having a great time too. There
was never a dull moment with
those cats. Randy and Richard
were like ‘Cheech and Chong’
before there WAS ‘Cheech and
Chong,’ that’s how funny they
were!”
Escobedo eagerly talked about
Richard’s early beginnings with
The Pharaohs.
“Man, The Pharaohs were
monster! What a sound they had.
I remember in the hallways of
Burbank, they would rehearse
and I was so impressed at how
good they were.”
My conversation with the
reedman closed on a somber note
as he broke into tears.
“I have been down man, since
the day I found out about Richard’s passing. it’s really hard for
me... it’s just like losing a brother and I get very emotional and I
will miss him forever.” He continued, “There was a song from
our Los Blues album, entitled
‘Smiling Phases’ that Richard
was phenomenal on and I will
always remember his beautiful
voice and trumpet solo.”
When Durawa heard of Richard’s passing he simply stated,
“I’m real sad that I could not
have been there the day of the
reunion. It has been years since
I last saw him, but everyone
knows he was one of the best,
and his drumming on the Los
Blues album was an inspiration
to ME and I will miss that.”
About 300 friends, family,
and former bandmates attended
a special memorial service on
Wednesday, August 22, at the
Fountain Bleu Events Center
on San Pedro Road, to pay their
respects and to have a proper
send off with a final jam session.
“Richard did not want a memorial that would be a sad,
tear-jerking event but wanted a
‘celebration of life’ to mark his
passing; an event where people
could enjoy themselves and be
happy,” said Gloria Almaraz
who befriended Garza less than
3 months ago when she began
her quest to reunite and honor
all 3 bands along with the help
from the staff at TEXPOP, with
an exhibit entitled “Talk to Me:
San Antonio Chicano Soul.”

“I remember when Richard
would be showing Bugz how
to play, and he would practice
the paradiddle (a drum scale) on
couch cushions so he wouldn’t
make noise!” said Frank Rodarte.

El próximo momento culminante de su carrera musical no sucedió hasta el 2006 cuando Pérez

“Cuando conocí a Ángel, radicado en Austin, nos dimos
cuenta de que compartíamos los
mismos gustos musicales, así
es que decidimos escribir unas
canciones y nos gustó mucho el
resultado,” Pérez dijo.
Actualmente, The Chris Perez
Project ha estado grabando en el
estudio con el legendario productor Emilio Estefan.
“The Chris Perez Project ha
sido mi bebe por los últimos
años,” Pérez dijo, “Nos sentimos
muy bendecidos de que Emilio
nos ha estado ayudando.”
Aunque Pérez es un veterano
en el Festival de People en Español, este año será un poco
más emocionante para su banda,
ya que el año pasado solamente
tocaron en el Centro de Convenciones durante el día y este año
tendrán la oportunidad de tocar
por la noche en el Alamadome.
“Estoy un poco nervioso pero
muy feliz de que nos escogieron
para tocar en el Alamodome,”
Pérez afirmó.
También habrá otras diferencias en el festival, ya que este año
Estefan está detrás de toda la producción. Según Pérez, el equipo
que Estefan contrató se encarga
de planear grandes eventos como
los Grammy’s y los VMA’s.
“Si Emilio va a hacer algo, lo
va a hacer en grande,” Pérez dijo.
“Tiene muchísima experiencia.”
El evento de dos días comienza
el 31 de agosto en el Centro de
Convenciones y los conciertos
serán en el Alamodome por la
noche.
El festival tendrá actividades
completamente gratis en el Centro de Convenciones, el público
podrá tomarse fotos con sus
artistas favoritas, podrán pedir
autógrafos, recibirán premios y
habrá pláticas abarcando todo
desde la salud hasta la belleza.
“Es como la revista de People
en Español en carne y hueso,
como si pudieras caminar en la
revista y tener una experiencia
interactiva,” Pérez nos expresó.

siguen uniendo a la lista celebridades latinas.
“El año pasado muchas personas se perdieron de los eventos
de día, y por eso ahora queremos
comunicarles cada detalle tan
pronto como podamos”, afirmó
Lisa Andrade, publirrelacionista en San Antonio del evento
People en Español. “El impacto
que tendrá en la ciudad será muy
grande”.
De acuerdo a Andrade, los
resultados del año pasado fueron
buenos, sin embargo desean
atraer más gente al evento para
darle mayor éxito.
En este evento, la gente podrá disfrutar de la presencia de
muchos artistas que se han unido
a la lista, como lo son Maite Perroni y el codiciado y muy querido
en San Antonio, Mario López.
Al actor se le podrán hacer
preguntas sobre su vida y su carrera profesional, y además estará
ofreciendo autógrafos para los
fanáticos.
Los eventos serán el 31 de
agosto y el 1 de septiembre y
traerán entretenimiento, consejos de vida y de salud, cultura y
muchos artistas de moda.
Los programas de día serán
gratuitos, sin embargo los boletos de los conciertos estarán a la
venta en www.ticketmaster.com,
y comienzan con el precio de $30
por persona. Con un boleto tendrá
acceso a todos los eventos del
festival de dos días.
La producción de esta serie de
espectáculos estará a cargo del
reconocido Emilio Estefan.
“La gente va a disfrutar de un
espectáculo increíble. Será algo
especial”, dijo Estefan en una
entrevista televisada que se le
hizo hace algunos meses en la
ciudad del Álamo.

Por segundo año consecutivo,
el nativo de San Antonio, Chris
Pérez, honrará con su presencia el
Festival de People en Español. El
talentoso guitarrista se presentara
en el Alamodome el primero de
septiembre a las 7 p.m. con su
banda, The Chris Pérez Project.
“Me siento muy feliz y emocionado en poder ser parte de este
elenco,” Chris le comentó a La
Prensa. “Me siento muy orgulloso de ser de San Antonio, desde
que empecé a hacer tours con las
diferentes bandas que he tocado,
siempre me he sentido muy orgulloso en decir de donde soy.”
Pérez empezó su carrera musical con el sueño de ser un gran
guitarrista de rock, pero en vez
de mudarse a Los Ángeles para
perseguir su sueño, se quedo en
San Antonio tocando en bodas,
quinceañeras, iglesias y en festivales pequeños.
“Así fue como conocí a AB
Quintanilla, quien después de
oír mi música me pregunto que
me uniera a Selena y Los Dinos,” dijo Pérez. “Lo demás es
historia.”
Desde entonces Pérez ha estado involucrado en el ambiente
musical, ha tocado la guitarra
para varios grupos musicales,
uno de ellos siendo los Kumbia

En el primer día, en el escenario principal se podrá charlar
con la famosa Cristina Saralegui
sobre la educación y los latinos.
Asimismo, habrá presentaciones
en vivo de Adam Irigoyen, del
canal de Disney, y del cantante
de San Antonio, Bobby Pulido.
Dentro de lo más destacado se
encuentra un tributo a la Reina de
la Banda, Jenni Rivera.
Mientras tanto, el segundo
escenario será para aquellos que
desean guardar su figura o aprender a ponerse en forma.
El escenario Renuévate contará
con la presencia del nutriólogo
e instructor de gimnasio José
Fernández, y varios especialistas estarán presentes dando a
conocer los mejores consejos de
cosmetología.
En ese mismo escenario, la motivadora María Marín platicará y
motivará a las mujeres a vencer
sus miedos.
El segundo día del festival se
dará a conocer al Hombre más
Sexy del 2013 de acuerdo a la revista, y habrá sesión de preguntas
y respuestas con Silvia Navarro,
Rafael Amaya, Marjorie de Sousa
y con el galanazo de telenovelas
Jencarlos Canela.
De igual manera, la periodista
Myrka Dellanos y el cantante de
música cristiana Marcos Witt
darán un mensaje motivante a
aquellos que han perdido la fe.
Las presentaciones musicales
de día incluyen a la cubanaamericana Kat Dahlia, al Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza y
a la mexicoamericana América
Sierra.
El nutriólogo José Fernández
y María Marín también estarán
presentes el segundo día ofreciendo sus mejores consejos a la
comunidad.
Debido a que el festival es
familiar, también habrá diversión
para los niños.

Grupo Fatal de Coalcomán triunfa
Con su versátil repertorio musical

Con un excelente repertorio en el
que tienen plasmado su versátil estilo musical el popular Grupo Fatal
de Coalcomán, orgullo del estado
de Michoacán, México, se encuentra cumpliendo compromisos de su
extensa agenda de presentaciones
en la región de Tierra Caliente.
Su director artístico y cantante
Pedro Madrigal, a nueve años de
haber integrado Grupo Fatal de
Coalcomán, ha logrado sobresalir
en cada grabación que ha realizado
tanto en discos sencillos como en
video clips que con éxito ha venido
produciendo y presentándolos entre la red social, radio y televisión.
Grupo Fatal de Coalcomán, lo
integran los destacados músicos;
Pedro Madrigal en la primera voz,
su hijo Pedro Madrigal Jr., en la
batería. Guillermo Zaragoza en
los teclados y segunda voz, Martín
Leiva, en el bajo, y Fabricio Madrigal en teclados. “Mis experiencias
obtenidas durante mi carrera musical me llevaron a formar Grupo
Fatal de Coalcomán. Continuando
con el estilo musical con el cual se
me conoce en México y la Unión
Americana, que es el estilo de
Tierra Caliente”, dijo el director e
intérprete Pedro Madrigal.
Una de sus experiencias de Madrigal padre, fueron sus años en los
que fue parte del plantel musical
“La Nobleza de Agililla”, grupo
que goza de fama internacional.
El primer álbum que Madrigal
produjo fue titulado con el tema
“El Barrio de los Malditos”, del
cual se desprenden los temas; “Me
gustas Mucho”, “Rancherita”, “Mi
Cómplice y Amor Limosnero”.
La gran oportunidad de grabar a
un nivel de mayor reconocimiento
fue en el año 2005 cuando firmó
contrato con el sello musical
Maury Records, que les abrió las
puertas para grabar su segunda
producción musical al cual tituló
“Gallos con Espolones”.
Durante el 2006 Grupo Fatal,
grabó su tercer disco titulado “Lo
más prendido de Tierra Caliente”,
que inmediatamente llego al gusto
de su público por el tema “Medias
Negras”.
Cuando todo iba viento en popa,
su nave naufrago, tras irse a la
quiebra la marca disquera Maury
Records, sin embargo Madrigal,
sin dar paso atrás, optó por la producción de su cuarto disco el cual
fue costeado por su propia cuenta,
llegando a la conclusión de reunir
selecto repertorio musical que tuvo
como resultado el título “Carta Jugada”, en el que se incluyeron los
temas: “Qué Chulada de Maíz Prieto. Cautiva y Triste. Pero Vidita,
Corazón de Vecindad, Borracho,
Carta Jugada”, y seis temas más.
Para los fans y amantes de
visitar la red social, Grupo Fatal de
Coalcomán, ha ubicado entre los
primeros lugares de popularidad
los temas: “Poco a Poco”, que es
una canción súper romántica interpretada con un suave sentimiento
en la voz de Pedro Madrigal. Así
como “Carta Jugada”, y “Corazón
de Vecindad”.
“Nuestro repertorio musical se
acopla al gusto de nuestros seguidores, tenemos canciones románticas, rancheritas, norteñas y estilo
tropical. De antemano agradecemos

“The Spectacular Now,” is a warm,
gritty tale of teens and booze

What I would give to be 18
again. “The Spectacular Now”
had me wishing that for days after
I saw the film.
It is an unbridled, realistic
look at the crossroads many face
when high school graduation time
comes along and we’re staring
real life head on. “Spectacular
Now” goes deeper that what the
surface of the film appears from
the movie’s trailers—it touches
on real issues like teen alcoholism and abandonment.
Do not mistake “The Spectacular Now” for a summer chickflick love story because it is so
much more.
The story centers around Sutter, a high school senior, played
by Miles Teller (“21 & Over”).
Sutter is an enigmatic character,
but lovable and charming at the
same time. He spends most of
the film with a flask glued to
his hand, cracking jokes and
professing to other to ‘live in the
now” when he hardly does. Sutter lives in a pool of booze and
daddy issues.
After getting dumped by his
girlfriend, Cassidy (Brie Larson), Sutter takes to booze more
frequently so he can drown the
heartbreak. After a long night of
drinking Sutter wakes up in the
middle of a stranger’s yard where
Aimee (Shailene Woodley) finds
him sprawled out.
Sutter, still drunk and in a haze
of booze from the night before,
can’t find his car and has no clue
where he’s at. He asks Aimee for
help, she obliges, thus kindling
an odd friendship that turns to
romance.
Aimee isn’t Sutter’s normal
type, but her infectious smile and
mellow attitude makes her hard
to resist. Sutter tries to avoid his
feeling and turns to his flask for
rescue but eventually let’s go and

his girlfriend Erin (Sharni Vinson) are thrown into a night of
survival full of twists and turns
that are just as hilarious as they
are suspenseful.
Director Adam Wingard
(“V/H/S”) and writer Simon
Barrett (“V/H/S 2”) are masters
of taking things we all love about
horror and twisting them to make
a whole new genre all together.
Wingard and Barett re-introduce themselves as names to
watch out for with “You’re Next.”
They have easily cut out a bloody
chunk of the same skin that Wes
Craven and John Carpenter molded in the 80s, while at the same
time understanding what a cliché
is and always manage to sidestep
it and stay fresh.
Sharni Vinson truly does a
stand out in her role and could
easily be the next actress with the
same tenacity and bravado that allowed Sigourney Weaver to play
Ripley in “Alien.”
“You’re Next” sets a high blood
stained mark for the horror genre.

“You’re Next” offers up originality, something in horror. That
doesn’t happen very often in a
genre that’s formula has been
used over a million times since
its introduction in the early 80s.
It becomes a niche that writers
and directors run to so that they
can follow the footsteps of the
masters of horror that started it.
However, “You’re Next” flips
an entire genre on its head. It
keeps the same aspects that makes
for a good horror film and adds a
dash of comedy.
When the Davidson family
escapes to the country for a
mini-family reunion of sorts,
their peaceful weekend goes bad,
as they are attacked by a group
of hunters disguised in animal
masks.
The killers, however, bite off
more than they can chew and
stumble upon an unassuming
character with a vicious will to
live.

Necesito tu ayuda. Soy una
chica de 18 años y acabo de
graduarme de preparatoria.
Cuando me gradué comencé
a sentir mucha confusión y ni
siquiera entré a universidad este
semestre. Todo el verano estuve

Sí es normal que a esta edad
te sientas confundida y que
nadie te entiende, pero eso es
algo que por lo general se puede
controlar con ayuda o sin ayuda. Comienza por ordenar tus
ideas y darte cuenta de que es
lo más importante para ti, deben
ser tú y tu familia. Si dices que
no has sido así en tu pasado,
entonces busca la manera de
volver a ser tú misma. Ponte
metas pequeñas que puedas
cumplir en una semana o dos.
Lee un libro, decora tu cuarto,
procura no salir de fiesta si
sabes que no puedes controlarte, y has ejercicio. Después
de haber cumplido metas cortas
podrás llevar a cabo metas a
largo plazo como tu inscripción
a la universidad, tu actitud, tu
manera de ver la vida, la fiesta
y otros detalles. Recuerda que
aquí lo importante es ser tú
misma y no dejar que nadie te
influencie para ser alguien que
no eres. Lo difícil es reconocer
que tenemos un problema, y tú
ya lo has reconocido, por lo que
vas un paso adelante.

Hacía más de cinco años que
no veía a mi prima Milly. El
enero pasado ella llegaría de
vacaciones a Miami junto con
su esposo, y para recibirlos,
decidí prepararles una cena
inolvidable de bienvenida.
Llegó el día de la visita y
me levanté al amanecer para
preparar la cena de cinco estrellas y asegurar que mi hogar
luciera perfecto. Cociné por
más de seis horas, puse la va-
jilla que sólo uso en ocasiones
especiales, planché el mantel de
hilo que heredé de mi mamá y
hasta encendí velas aromáticas
en cada esquina.
Faltaban pocas horas para
recibir la visita de mis primos
cuando sonó mi celular: era
Milly diciéndome que era imposible llegar a Miami. Mientras
ella me explicaba que todos los
vuelos estaban cancelados por
una tormenta de nieve, por mi
mente sólo pasaba: “No puede
ser que todo mi esfuerzo para
preparar la cena perfecta haya
sido en vano”.
Llamé a varios amigos para
invitarlos a comer a última
hora, pero ninguno podía llegar.
Y de repente pensé en algo que
jamás se me hubiera ocurrido.
“Qué tal si me consiento y disfruto esta velada solita”. Me
senté en la mesa, abrí la botella
de vino, me serví un plato de
lomo salteado con papas gratinadas y dejé que la música
de Alejandro Sanz me acom-
pañara. Disfruté la cena como
si hubiera estado acompañada
por una buena amiga, sólo que
en este caso, yo era mi propia
compañía.
Esa noche, tuve una revelación; me di cuenta que somos
capaces de desvivirnos por
hacer felices a nuestros seres
queridos, pero no por hacernos
felices a nosotros mismos.
Por ejemplo, le regalaste un
certificado costoso de Spa a tu
mamá para que se relajara, pero
tú no te das un masaje desde
hace más de cinco años. Según
te desbordas en atenciones
por otros, así mismo deberías
hacerlo contigo.
Debes poner tus necesidades
y gustos en primer lugar, esto
no es un símbolo de egoísmo,
sino de amor propio. En conclusión, las mismas cenas,
atenciones y amor que dedicas
a tus seres queridos, deberías
también dárselos a la persona
más importante en tu vida: ¡Tú!
