AC03. It’s never too late to learn realist drawing
and painting! You will be working from observation
to make drawings or paintings of things you choose
yourself, with as much guidance as you would like.
Learn to use classical techniques of simplifying
shapes and using light and shadow to create pictures that really look three-dimensional. Painters
will use either acrylic paint or oil paint, which are
both very forgiving materials that allow you to

Design Your Own Jewelry Workshop
for Beginners
Fused Fine Silver “Going In Circles”
Pendant
AC08. Design beautiful jewelry out of semi-precious stones and fresh water pearls. Learn how to
make a pair of earrings, a necklace and a pendant
using three essential tools. Afternoon tea and delicious vanilla and chocolate cupcakes will be
served. And you’ll be dressed for the occasion.
AC10. Use a small butane torch (aka a micro torch
or a créme brulee torch) to fuse fine silver for an
eye-catching, circular pendant. Unlike sterling silver, there are no alloys in fine silver which allow it
to fuse without the traditional metalworking chemicals of flux, solder and pickle. We’ll cover torch
use, safety, and introduce the materials used. The
beauty of this pendant is its simplicity - both in
the design and materials needed. The largest outside circle on this pendant is about one inch. You’ll
go home with new skills and a cool pendant.
Yvonne Page-Magnus has many years of experience in this field. She has a BA in Fine Arts from
the Inter-Continental University in London where
she learned jewelry making, knotting and silk
threading from a private instructor. She also studied geology on her own and is deeply passionate
about semi-precious stones.

Pendant Class or not, please join us to make earrings using a small butane torch (aka a micro torch
or a créme brulee torch) and fine silver wire. Make
one pair of earrings during class. You’ll have a
choice to make either the dangling circles earrings
(shown) or we can work together to design a
unique pair. Learn how to shape the fine silver
with simple tools such as pliers or forms like dowels or other items. Unlike sterling silver, there are
no alloys in fine silver. This allows it to fuse without the traditional metalworking chemicals of flux,
solder and pickle. We’ll cover torch use and safety,
an introduction to the materials used in class and
then get started on the project.

flake in grade school or have seen silhouettes.
These are forms of papercutting. In this workshop,
you will learn how to cut different kinds of hearts
to make into a picture or mobile.

Jewelry Making Basics: Creating
Jewelry With a Purpose
AC30. Back in ancient times, jewelry was not merrily worn for adornment. Instead, the colors and
stones were chosen for specific reasons. For example, the color red has a stimulating action on our
heart and circulation, while blue is linked to the
throat and thyroid gland and is very soothing.
Each of us responds differently to various colors,
minerals, and stones. During this basic jewelry
making class, learn how to create earrings and a
bracelet with a professional look using wire,
clasps, and crimp bead covers. You will also have
access to a wide selection of colors and shapes of
gemstones, including unique glass and wood
beads.
Shannon Johnson is a certified educator in business and math. She learned jewelry design through
classes and her own experimentation. Her knowledge of gemstones comes from years of research
and personal relationships with those who have
studied in this arena for years.

clothing in Japan. Learn about the history of the
kimono and how to wear them. There will be three
sets of kimono: komon for formal dress, casual
dress, and yukata for summer dress. All students
will have a chance to try on these Japanese dresses.
FH03. Inspired by working detection dogs, K9
Nose Work is an easy-to-learn activity and sport
that builds confidence and focus in many dogs, and
provides a safe way to keep dogs fit and healthy
through mental and physical exercise. K9 Nose
Work starts with getting your dog excited about
using his nose to seek out a favorite toy or treat
reward hidden in one of several boxes, expanding
the game to entire rooms, exterior areas, and vehicles. As your dog grows more confident with his
nose, target odors are introduced, and competition
skills are taught.

NEW! Know Your Rights:
Dealing With the Police
Seeds to Live By: Spring Gardening
FH10. Police encounters are scary for civilians and
police alike - and can turn tragic. Part of the problem is that citizens don’t know their rights. Learn
how to “deal professionally” with police if they
stop you; when, if ever, to consent to a search or
answer police questions; help you “arrest proof”
yourself; and maintain your most important freedoms. This isn’t intended to help people commit
and get away with crimes; it’s to help all of us
achieve better relations with police in the critical
moments when it matters most.

Celebrating 35 Years!
Spotlight on Barbara Bloom
Photo: J. L. Steinberg
Barbara Bloom had a dream: to create an affordable community
education program that would bring diverse residents together to get to
know each other. Based on the concept of neighbors teaching neighbors
in a community setting, that dream became the Mt. Airy Learning Tree,
affectionately known as MALT. Starting in 1981 with 17 classes and 125
registrants, today we average 750 classes and 5,000 students per year.
An Interview with Barbara Bloom by Karl Biemuller
Q You were the moving spirit behind creating the Mt. Airy Learning Tree.
Tell us more.
A Yes, I was. What I realize when I look over MALT’s history is how incredibly
lucky I was to draw many talented people to MALT from the beginning.
Before we started to gather classes, I asked East and West Mt. Airy Neighbors
to jointly co-sponsor us, and that’s how Bill Ewing and Susan Beetle, Eversley
Vaughn, Dianne Reed, Pat Henning, Gayle Koster and others got involved.
I think my gift probably was in asking for help. I was never afraid to say, “Would
you like to do this?”
Q What was MALT like in the beginning?
A It wasn’t always easy. People we asked to teach didn’t seem to understand
what we were doing, which seems odd today. At first they didn’t have any idea
of what we were talking about. “Huh? Why would people want to study bird
watching with me?” or “Why would people want to learn how to repair bikes?”
After several sessions we could just show them the brochure and it got easier
to recruit teachers.

In those early years, our policy was, “If you can’t afford the fee, pay what
you can and come anyhow.” One of our first courses was on women’s
assertiveness. The first three registrations didn’t pay anything. I thought, “Oh,
we’re cooked.” Fortunately enough, the later registrants all paid, but it made
for an anxious beginning.
Q There was a lot of talent in Mt. Airy, wasn’t there?
A Actually I think that’s still true. People are eager to be helpful and just need
to be asked.
Q Where did the name Mt. Airy Learning Tree come from?
A Eversley Vaughn, one of our first organizers, quoted the famed photographer,
musician, writer and film director, Gordon Parks. In Parks’ book The Learning
Tree, it says “Everything you need to know you can learn under this tree.”
It seemed appropriate for what we were setting out to achieve. You will see
those words in the mosaic MALT commissioned to celebrate our 25th
anniversary, outside Lovett Library on Germantown Avenue.
Q How do you feel about MALT today?
A I’m just very pleased with what it has become and what people have made of
it. I’m delighted that the people who have followed me have done so well and
made it their own.

Open your Chakras through Inner Fire Yoga
with Sophie Bernard.
Inner Fire Yoga
MB08. The primary goal of Inner Fire Yoga is to
provide an opportunity for all who have an interest
in the practice of authentic yoga, with the principles and methodology which makes it safe, supportive and healthy for growth, relaxation and toning, at all levels. This practice is designed to create
a positive and balanced effect on our physical,
mental, emotional and spiritual bodies. The
sequencing of classes is designed to work through
and open the 7 primary energy centers (called
Chakras) of the subtle body. Each class includes a
spiritually based intention (appreciation, joy, being
in the moment...) with focus on the relationship of
the breath and the body. After an hour of sequencing postures based on the intention of the evening, Sophie will guide you through a 30 min. deep
relaxation.
Sophie Bernard has been doing yoga for nearly

Heart Centered Hatha Yoga
Yoga Basics
MB06. Whether you are looking to gain overall
flexibility or improve balance, learning yoga
basics is of tremendous benefit for the entire
body and mind. When the hamstrings, hips are

and stiffness dissipates. Mobilizing and opening
the shoulders dissolves neck tension. Remember,
yoga is a gradual process. Be patient with yourself.
MB09. Heart-Centered Hatha Yoga is for all-levels,
taught with a focus on alignment and breath work,
with poses ranging from basic to advanced. Each
class has a heart-centered theme that will encourage students to connect with their highest potential and to bring awareness to the inner spirit that
dwells in each of us. This is a great way to increase
your flexibility and strength while calming your
mind.

Marma Therapy
MB22. Marma therapy is an ancient form of
Ayurveda treatment dating back to 1500-1200
BCE. A Marma point is where two or more types of
tissue meet, such as muscles, vein, ligaments,
bone, or joints. Stimulating these vital points
with your fingertips in a circular motion, with or
without essential oils, signals the body to produce
exactly what it needs to heal the body, mind, and
consciousness. Once you learn marma therapy, you
can begin to practice this ancient form of healing

Meditation, Gratitude, and Joy
MB36. In the Buddhist tradition, gratitude is recognized as the foundation for joy to arise in the
mind. This class will cultivate joy by reflecting on
gratitude. Does your mind orient towards what’s
wrong or what can be appreciated? Does it see
what’s already whole in your self? Gratitude practice is one of the highest protections against negativity and can move us away from that sense of
not being enough or scarcity. This is a very simple
technique and shifts one’s orientation away from
judgment and the “to do” list to a sense of inner
peace. Each participant will develop a unique
approach to setting our intention on gratitude in
recognition that this orientation determines if we
experience well being or not. Very simple loving
kindness and gratitude practices will be presented
in a way for each participant to incorporate into
their daily life. We will sit comfortably in chairs or
on the floor.

these major life events shakes the foundation we

of grief and loss. Both those in mourning and those

A Dubliners Epiphany
WM06. Dubliners is a collection of fifteen short
stories by James Joyce, first published in 1914.
They form a naturalistic depiction of Irish middle
class life in and around Dublin in the early years
of the 20th century. This work of art reflects life
in Ireland at the turn of the last century, and by
rejecting euphemism, reveals to the Irish their
unromantic reality. Each of the 15 stories offers
glimpses into the lives of ordinary Dubliners, and
collectively they paint a portrait of a nation.
Through readings, films and discussion, we will
delve into these wonderful stories.

starting with the basics created with a drum language designed by Babatunde Olatunji and moving

the emphasis on pulse, flow and developing the
awareness that as drummers, and musicians in
general, we walk a fine line between playing and
being played by the music. Making music together
involves a collective awareness, a communal
agreement as to how we relate to and use the flow
of time, choosing moments of sound and silence to
create rhythm. Our goal as a drum ensemble is to

SOre SHOULDer?
ursday, January 7 • 12:30 p.m.–1:30 p.m.
ouch, my aching shoulder! Do you experience soreness aer activities such as
painting, liing or playing a sport, which require you to raise your arms? as we age
the so tissues surrounding the shoulder tend to degenerate. shoulders get their
range of motion from the rotator cuff, which is made up of four tendons. if the
tendons or bones around the rotator cuff suffer damage or swelling, you may find it
painful and difficult to li your arm up over your head. sometimes an injury that
lasts a long time will cause the tendon to tear. is type of injury may need surgery.
Join leslie Barnes, MD, assistant professor of orthopedic surgery and sports
Medicine, and surgeon at temple. Dr. Barnes specializes in shoulder and elbow
disorders including rotator cuff tears and tennis elbow.

have dense breast tissue and what should you do to maintain breast health?
Catherine plzak, MD, surgeon, Chestnut hill hospital, will explain the aCs changes
and help you understand when may be a safe time to stop annual screening.

Tips from the Tree
Make Your MALT Class a Satisfactory Experience
• Snow and bad weather closings: MALT follows the Philadelphia School District. If the schools
are closed, so is MALT. Check our website and call our office for confirmation.
• Please be on time to your classes!
• Cancellation of classes is decided based on the number of registrations. Please do not wait
until the last minute to register. Your timely call may make the difference as to whether
or not a class runs. We make every effort to notify you of cancellations. Please check your
voice mail and e-mail.
• Your current address, e-mail and phone numbers are important. If your class is postponed or moved, we want you to know. If you provide your e-mail address, we will use it—so
please check it.
• Addresses of major class locations are on our web page. Mark the location of your class on
your calendar.
• Classes in private homes are marked with an asterisk. You will receive the address when you
register.
• Water Aerobics, Computer, Horseback Riding and other classes with limited space fill
up very quickly. Register early.
