Touching the Universal Heart- an artist statement
“Somewhere in my painting process I have had the
opportunity to tune into a very strong emotion. I
will call it the Universal emotion. Whether the work
evokes sadness, joy, tranquility or other feelings,
these are common instincts in all humans. I have
witnessed its impact recently in paintings infused with
a provocative quality that speaks loudly to the viewer.
The mere sight of an object or face bathed in light,
one of many images one could see in a day, holds the
attention differently, softly, as if sharing questions
about existence and information that is mutually
understood. One viewer could ask “tell me more...
tell me your secrets...” of the subject in the painting.
Then the painting answers in a visual language
about its beauty and history, age and memories;
this experience opening a door into one’s soul....a
visual “scent” you might not recall completely, but
you remember it
stirs your heart.”
