The Blue Devils ended North’s 10-game winning streak with the win. “We think we are the best team in our division,” Kenmore West coach Rich Harris said, “and we went out and proved it on Thursday night.” The game was played on Thursday night at Depew High School as the Williamsville Schools observed the Yom Kippur Holiday. “It was a short week,” Harris said. “You never feel ready when you have to play on a Thursday.” Kenmore West led 14-8 at the half and took a 20-8 lead in the fourth quarter. The Spartans scored to pull within 20-15 but that Devils slammed the door after that. The win proves that Kenmore West belongs in any talk of AA Photo by Nick Loverde Championship contenders. Kenmore West junior Terrell Ford. “We were in a great game with Williamsville South and lost on a last-second field goal,” Harris said. “We played Orchard Park tough and lost in the fourth quarter. This game proves we belong with all those teams.” Terrell Ford rushed for 182 yards on 17 carries to lead the offense. Ford scored TDs on runs of 59 and 57 yards. “He’s just dynamic when he gets to the line of scrimmage,” Harris said. “He has speed but he’s strong enough to straight arm people. He has a great lateral cut. He has everything you want in a running back. He’s the total package.” Ford has rushed for 726 yards this season, the 8th-best total in Western New York. “That’s pretty good when we played three Top 10 teams,” Harris said. “Every big Division I school in the northeast has contacted him. Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Rutgers have all been in contact with him.” Harris says that Ford does not make a ton of noise on the field. “He’s a quiet leader,” he said. “Terrell is very polite, a good student and has good character.” 6 LB LB SS FS For the promotion of amateur football in WNY! 2013-2014 Activities The WNY Amateur Football Alliance sponsors the following programs: Senior College Night A College Recruiter Night in December which gives High School Seniors the opportunity to meet with many of the college recruiters from throughout the North-East. The Golden Eagles held a 22-0 lead at the half and had to withstand a Silver Creek rally after the break. “We were dominating the first half,” Cleve Hill coach Glen Graham said. “In the second quarter we kind of exploded on them. We even had a long TD called back.” But, Graham said, he cautioned his players against thinking that game was over. “It looked like we had them put away,” he said. “but I knew they would fight back. When we got a couple of guys nicked up, we were scrambling.” Many area fans did not think that Cleve Hill would be a contender for the C North title this season. The Eagles lost 24 seniors from last years Class C championship team and many figured this would be a “rebuilding” season for Graham. “We have a lot of juniors, 2 sophomores and a freshman up on the varsity this year,” Graham said, “and even our junior class is less experienced than we have been in a long time.” When the Eagles started 1-2, losing to both Maryvale and Southwestern in the first three weeks, most fans Cleve Hill junior wrote them off. “Our whole goal from the beginning was to get better as the season progressed,” Graham said. “Even though we got beat, the positives we took from the losses made us pretty confident. “We made enough mistakes that we could not expect to win those games. We knew that if we played better, we had chances to win that game.” The Eagles showed signs of improving despite the losses. “Maryvale and Southwestern are both physical and strong teams,” Graham said. “But we liked what were becoming. We were becoming a good football team.” Graham noticed his team getting sharper in practice. “Our competitiveness in practice was the biggest thing,” Graham said. “We had our best week of practice before the Silver Creek game. Every kid was dressed and ready to go before I got out there and they put in some quality work.” One reason that the Golden Eagles are back in Class C discussion is the emergence of junior TB Grayson Taylor. Taylor rushed for 187 yards and a TD in the win over Silver Creek. His 83 yard TD early in the fourth quarter gave Cleve Hill a 28-6 lead and blunted the Knights rally. Taylor has now rushed 73 times for 765 yards this season, averaging more than 10 yards per carry. He has also scored 8 TDs. “Our offensive line is confident with him running the ball,” Graham said. Taylor is only 5-9 but he is a solid 190 pounds. “His size would work against him with certain programs,” Graham said, “but he is a pretty strong kid. He squats over 400 pounds. He looks better in a t-shirt and shorts than a football uniform but he is a strong runner. It’s hard to bring him down.” Graham actually called Taylor up to the varsity last season, during his sophomore year. “We brought him up in training camp last year,” Graham said. “I thought he should start at linebacker.” Taylor was initially skeptical of playing with the varsity. “He thought he should play with the JVs,” Photo by Mark Adair Graham said. “We had the conversation Friday before camp started. I just said, ‘Trust me. You’re a varsity football player.’ And he started every game at linebacker.” Taylor also played TB when starter Brandon Thomas needed a rest or was injured. “His first carry as a starter was a 45-yard TD run,” Graham said. “We knew we had a pretty good tailback in the making.” Graham says that taylor played virtually unnoticed last season because of the LB crew he joined. “We had Josh White and Wayne Jones,” Graham said. “Those were two all-state kids and no one noticed how good Grayson was.” Taylor has an academic average near 90 while taking all advanced classes and college courses. “He’s quiet, respectful and responsible,” Graham said. “He’s an ‘A’ student. He’s just a top-flight young man.” 9 AA N O R T H N O T E B O O K Lockport trailed 14-0 at the half and pulled within 20-14 in the final quarter but lost to Niagara Falls 2714... CTF’s vision is to develop the hearts of coaches and athletes to be men of character for others. Week 6 The Question is… What is your ATTITUDE like? things are not like you want them to be. Maybe it’s Bounce Back, Fresh Start; See a little…see a lot, or make the choice to just say NO! How do you start to transform and renew your mind to the right thinking? First of all, beware that unless you are taken captive by the philosophy or empty lies of the world, like: “Gonna get mine” or “My Thing”, “Have your way” or “I’m loving it.” These are all me-centered, entitlement attitudes. Think on the kinds of things that are true, noble, just, pure, and lovely or a good report. It is a choice. What will you choose - life or death? Attitude is the inward mindset expressed by outward behavior. A great quote from Remember the Titans: Julius says to Gary, “Team… What team? I’m gonna get mine!” Gary says to Julius, “That attitude stinks!” Julius responds to Gary… “Attitude reflects leadership, Captain!” I love Einstein’s quote, “Weakness of attitude is weakness of character.” When times are tough, what is your internal talk? Can you erase that negative thought toward a kid, a call, a superior, a parent, and do all things without murmuring or complaining? Sometimes we need to erase the white board of our minds and say, “FRESH… START.” What is that internal saying or word you can go to when Your attitude will determine your attitude and success in life. See “Cover Story” on page 25 24 CoverStory continued from page 24 thought it would be a great opportunity for him to flourish at a good program.” Terius Wheatley has rushed for 490 yards on just 39 carries... more than 12 yards per carry. He has also rushed for 7 TDs. “He has great speed,” Tundo said, “and he has a great football IQ. He really knows and understands the game.” Tundo says that Wheatley’s kicking give the Quakers another weapon - as if they need another weapon at all. “He has great kicking skills,” Tundo said. “Against Frontier he 7 kickoffs to the end zone for touchbacks. That’s a huge boost for the defense when the other team is always starting on their own 20.” Wheatley is 6-1 and 180-pounds... not nearly as big as his brother TJ who is 6-6 and 270. “He has a natural strength though,” Tundo said. “and I think he can still get a lot stronger. He has all the intangibles to be an outstanding college football player. His upside is big-time.” Tundo says that Wheatley is just trying to fit in. “He’s a humble kid and he’s just having fun,” he said. “He’s a great asset to our team and he’s doing fine in school. We’re glad to have him.” As for the rest of the Quakers, the display they put on against Clarence is enough to make coaches of other Class AA programs shake their heads. “We have a state-caliber team at this point,” Tundo says honestly. “Last week were banged up and we’ll have to get some guys healthy if we want to go very far in the playoffs. We are doing good things and I’m proud of how the kids reacted to having all those players out.” Tundo says that Myers, who rushed for 194 yards and 4 TDs, is as good as any tailback in Western New York. “We have several kids who can start for us,” he said. “But Billy is a very good back. He does a lot of things for us and he could start anywhere else.” Tundo also points to Brett Morseon, a sophomore who got his first varsity start at center against Clarence. “Brett had never played center before and he was incredible,” Tundo said. “That’s hard to step in at a new position and do a shotgun snap every time. Guys stepped up everywhere.” Tundo says that the competition for playing time is making his team better all over the field. “We’ve had a lot of guys step up at every position this year,” he said. “Linebacker, quarterback, at every position we have three or four guys who are as good as each other. Our defensive line is rotating six players and they have all done a good job.” Tundo stopped short of predicting that his team would play in the Carrier Dome on Thanksgiving weekend. “Everything has to go perfect to go 13-0,” he said. “You always have to overcome obstacles and injuries. The two years we won the state championship, we didn’t have much of that. Right now, we are just trying to make the most of our talent. We’ll see if we can get back to the state finals.” 25 Tune in to TALK FOOTBALL!! Be sure to LISTEN Saturday Morning from 10 to 11!! Not the man who points out where the strong man stumbled or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again... ...who at best knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat. - Theodore Roosevelt Upstate FootballWeekly Are You Game?
