THE HEART BEAT
`
`
`
`
Life is rhythm !
The ceaseless movement deep within us, giving us the beauty of what we call
Life !
In a Life filled with moments of joy or sorrow, hope or despair, tireless striving or
eternal calm, a rhythm is being played. An unravelled mystery, this rhythm of life
resonates to a silent beat. A Beat that sees us through this drama we call Life.
At Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani, we surrender in love to that Heart which beats in
you and a million others - the Giver of Life !

PREFACE
`
`
`
`
Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital, Naya Raipur, Chhattisgarh, is a public service
Institution, set up as an expression of gratitude to Revered Sri Sathya Sai Baba,
who tirelessly worked to alleviate the suffering of millions and brought joy, peace
and purpose to several generations. It is currently recognized as an Institute of
Excellence in the area of Child Heart care.
We, at Sai Sanjeevani, are humbled to present the first edition of “The Heart

This inaugural edition is also particularly special to all of us, as this month Sai

OUR HEART
`
`
`
`
This section is the most special section of this newsletter as we share with you a
few stories of little hearts that have touched us deeply.
1.
From Blue to Pink – The story of Sai Tameem
Age
: 10 months
From
: Rajahmundry, East Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh
Operated on : 16th June 2014
Pic: Sai Tameem with his mother – Gausya and
Grand mother - Ammulu
“We do not have any other place to go and get him treated" . These were the
words of the parents of Sai Tameem. He was born with a congenital heart
disease and was diagnosed with the disease 20 days after his birth in his town,
Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh State.
Born to a Hindu father and a Muslim mother, Sai Tameem was always special
as he represented the unity of two beautiful cultures. His parents resolved that
they shall do EVERYTHING they can to ensure that this special kid has a healthy
and joyous life.
8
From the doctors in small towns to the specialists in the corridors of the best
hospitals at Hyderabad (Capital of Andhra Pradesh), the baby has seen it all,
but in vain. He, being all of 10 months, was being offered treatment at heavy
costs and this was delaying medical/surgical intervention to the baby who was
losing ground quickly. After being denied surgical treatment at affordable
prices, the daily earning parents lost all hope to get him operated.
It was then that they got their ray of hope through their village head who was
a Sai devotee. He told them about Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital at Naya
Raipur.
Diagnosis and treatment
They managed to reach Sai Sanjeevani hospital where the baby was
diagnosed having a small Atrial Septal Defect with a severe Infundibular
Pulmonary Stenosis (Double Chambered Right Ventricle type) and a small PFO.
He was successfully treated surgically FREE of any expenditure from the
parents. The child underwent a trans right atrial intracardiac repair with the
connection of the superior vena cava to the right atrial appendage. This
procedure is known as Shumacker's repair. He was hemodynamically stable
post operatively and recovered well. Sai Tameem is now on his way to
celebrate his first birthday with a renewed strength pumping out of his heart !
Their experience
“Is hospital mein hume sabse bharpur sahyog mila. Doosre hospital mein itna
zyada prem bhara vyavahar logon se kahan milta. Yahan pe sab kuch kabile-tareef hai. Aur Sai baba tho allah ke hi swaroop hai. Woh dharti par logon ke
dukh door karne aae the, tho hamko bhi sukh pradaan kar diya”
( In this hospital, we got complete cooperation from all. In other hospitals, where would
one find people whose behaviour is filled with love. Everything here is worth appreciation.
And then, Sai baba is also a form of Allah. He incarnated here to alleviate the suffering of
people and so he bestowed us also with happiness )
When he becomes big
“Usko hum bohot padhake, Chhota Dr. Tameem Banaenge . .”
(We will ensure that he studies well and will make him Little Dr Tameem . . )
*Dr Tameem is a Cardiac Surgeon at Sai Sanjeevani.

The boy who walked out of the OT – The story of Narad Parkar
Age
: 6 years
From
: Dania, Durg District, Chhattisgarh
Operated on : 11th June 2014
Pic: Narad Parkar
At 2 months, Narad was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect (Tricuspid
Atresia) for which medical treatment was started in Durg, Chhattisgarh State.
His father was then transferred to Nagpur (Maharashtra State), where medical
treatment continued intermittently as and when there was availability of funds.
Then finally, when Narad turned 6, the doctors at Nagpur said he will require
surgery immediately and that his condition is going to get worse rapidly.
They came to the Raipur Govt Hospital (Chhattisgarh State) as they could not
afford the surgery in the private hospital in Nagpur. However, even here there
was a small expense which they could not afford.
Their ray of hope came on the evening after they were informed of the
expected expenses at the Raipur Govt Hospital. That evening, while they had
to take some tough decisions of what to do next, a biscuit distributer over
heard the conversation and suggested Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital.
10
The father wasted no time and rushed to the hospital late evening on 9th June
2014. The OPD was closed and no more patients were being seen that day. So
the father sat at the steps of the entrance angry and dejected. It was then,
that our cardiologist, Dr Yogesh, seeing him sitting with his emaciated son,
called him and conducted an ECHO. The condition was an operative
emergency and it was nothing short of a miracle that the child had survived
that long.
Diagnosis and treatment
The child was admitted and an immediate work up was started. There was
only one small problem, the child seemed to have a small membrane in his
Right Atrium which hadn’t been diagnosed earlier.
The operative findings were as follows - Large thymus, Moderate sized Atrial
Septal Defect (ASD, mixing of oxygenated and de-oxygenated blood), Right
atrium – divided by a cor membrane
This divided atrium along with Tricuspid Atresia (Complete Non functioning
Tricuspid valve) is a case that is yet to be seen outside of a theoretical text
book. As far as anyone can tell it’s a condition that has not been found yet.
Miracle post surgery
This child walked straight out of the OT to the Step down ICU wearing nothing
but his cardiac drain within 2 hours of extubation (anesthetic wear-off) , which
is fairly uncommon. Our nursing staff had to scramble after him carrying his
drain next to him.
Their experience
The father recollects the day he came late for the OPD and said that he sat
angry and hurt and looked at swami’s photo and said, “If you are really
helping the poor and needy, why are you putting me and my child through so
much difficulty?” And that is when he was responded in the form of the
doctor. That is the moment he realized the magic of this hospital. He also said
that when the child was born, he had received a call from a guru from
Bangalore (he doesn’t know who that was, even to this day) saying they will
face a seemingly impossible difficulty, but they have to stay strong and not
give up. He felt extremely relieved that the tough phase was over and
Sanjeevani helped them get over it.

2. Completion of the Divine Child Health Program Phase 1 report
The Divine Child Health Program (DCHP) commenced on 1st September 2013
in Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Hospital, Naya Raipur. The Program covered
healthcare needs of the children through timely detection of Defects,
Diseases, Deficiencies and Disabilities through systematic health screening of
rural school going children in Chhattisgarh State. The aim of this program is to
facilitate early intervention and timely medical management to the child and
its family, eventually leading to a Healthy Nation.
In the first phase, 2029 children
were screened for over 29
conditions in line with Govt of
India’s program, Rashtriya Bal
Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK) that
was launched in 2013. The report
highlights indicative prevalences
of each of the above conditions
based on the primary screening
guidelines suggested by RBSK.
