Miguel de (ervantes, the greatest Spanish novelist of all times, was born in 1 547, in the famous university town
of Alcalii de Henares, near Madrid, Spain. Much of his life is unknown; however, several facts are evident.
He was the son of Rodrigo Cervantes, a surgeon of very modest means,
who worked for the University of
Alcalii de Henares.
In 1 570, he and his brother Rodrigo enlisted in the Spanish Army in ltaly, and in 1 57 1 fought in the famous
naval battle ofJ.gpanto, in Turkey. He was shot with a primitive shotgun and lost the use of his left arm.
(ervantes subsequently fought in many battles throughout the Mediterranean Sea. Finally, when he and his
brother Rodrigo were returning to Spain, their ship "El 5ol"was captured by Berber pirates who sold Cervantes
and his brother as slaves in Algiers to be oarsmen beneath the decks of a pirate ship.
ln 1 580, (ervantes was released after a ransom of 600 ducats was paid.
He and his
brother returned to Spain.
Cervantes'bravery while a captive was legendary.
After his return t0 Spain, Cervantes found himself penniless and unable to earn a livelihood.
He
finally got
a
civil service job
as commissary collecting food supplies for
the'?rmada Invencible."
Cervantes had difficulty with bookkeeping, and twice he was thrown in jail for owing
money to the
treasury.
