Season of giving at Seneca
High school’s annual toy drive a staple of holiday season, benefiting 800 area kids

The Seneca High School student council is often in the news
for heart-warming stories, but
nothing beats lending a helping
hand during the holiday season.
Student council president
Samantha Scarpello said this
season is not as joyous for some
as it is for others.
“We’re giving back for the holiday season by giving these toys
to the kids in the community
who otherwise wouldn’t get anything at all for Christmas,”
Scarpello said.
Seneca held its annual toy
drive on Dec. 3. This is a tradition that dates back to when the
high school first opened its doors
in 2003.
“We inherited the idea from
Shawnee about 14 years ago,”
guidance counselor Erica Maira
said.
Maira is also the advisor for
the student council and has been
leading this event for several
years, though she attributed
much of the success of the toy
drive to the surrounding schools
in the district that collect toys
and bring them in to donate.

On Tuesday, Nov. 17, students at Olson Middle School participated in
a walk to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation sponsored by Olson’s Academic Leaders. Students collected close to
$1,500 through contributions and by selling paper sneakers to attach to the hallway walls. Pictured are members of the executive
committee and three students who were the top fundraisers, from

Counselor: Toys can bring
a little joy to an entire family
COUNSELOR

in the cafeteria so we could organize the toys for the agencies by
category
(dolls,
electronics,
books, etc.),” Toy Drive Committee Chairperson Laura Pfeffer
said.
Arc of Burlington County,
Bethany Christian Services, Boys
and Girls Club of Camden County, Dudley Schools of Camden and
the Christian Caring Center were
among the agencies picking up
the toys.
Seneca students helped “shop”
and load the cars and trucks. The
toys will now be distributed to
more than 800 children in South
Jersey.
Maira referenced numerous instances in years past when she received letters from the agencies
saying thank you.
“Sometimes, these are the only
toys they get at Christmas,”
Maira said. “Some of the thank
you notes referenced how the recipient gave it to her sister to give
to her other sister. It just shows
how this can bring a little joy to
an entire family.”
This level of gratitude made all
the hard work worthwhile for the
Seneca students who got involved.
“It was cool to be able to give
back to the community and help
out during the holiday season, a
time that can be tough for some
families,” Scarpello said. “The
best part was watching everyone
come to the doors and seeing
their faces light up as they looked
through the toys.”
The National Honor Society donated the new toys to Toys for
Tots, an ongoing program run by
the United States Marine Corps
Reserve that distributes toys to
children whose parents cannot afford to buy them gifts for Christmas.

THE TABERNACLE SUN — DEC. 16–22, 2015
in our opinion
Happy holidays!
108 Kings Highway East
Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933
A ‘thank you’ to everyone who helped to brighten the season for those in need
A
s the holiday season has a little more than a week remaining, we want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has
stepped up to help those in need. This
time of year usually brings out the
best in people. Judging from the number of announcements we received
from our readers regarding donation
drives, it looks like this year was no exception.
In the past, specific tragedies – such
as Hurricane Sandy a few years ago –
created an immediate need in many
communities. But even though this
area was lucky enough to avoid such a
circumstance this year, there is still a
big need.
Stepping up
Thank you to everyone who lent a helping
hand to those in need this holiday season.
But giving shouldn’t stop just because the
holidays are over. Tell us about your donation drive throughout the year,
and we’ll share it with the rest of the
community.
Food banks are still low on food and
supplies. The same can be said for
those groups that help with clothing,
and even toys for children.
Over the past few weeks, we have
had the pleasure of publishing stories
about efforts to lend a hand. Like always, there were the usual Toys for Tot
drives and more. We don’t keep a formal count of the number of holiday
fundraising event stories we publish
from year to year, but it certainly
seemed that, in 2015, there were many.
So, we thank those individuals and
groups who organized these efforts.
And, on behalf of them, we also thank
everyone who picked up an extra can
of non-perishable food, an additional
bag of dog food, one more toy and
more. To all of those who reached a little deeper into their wallets this year to
help out, your generosity truly made a
difference.
As you wrap up your holiday shopping for this year, try to lend one final
helping hand to those in need.
We wish everyone a happy holiday
season!
‘Home for the Holidays’ offers free pet adoptions
Promotion runs through month of December at Burlington County Animal Shelter
Burlington County Freeholder Deputy
Director Bruce Garganio announced a special “Home for the Holidays” promotion
that will offer free pet adoptions to approved adopters through the month of December at the Burlington County Animal
Shelter.
“With the holiday season upon us, we
are looking to do all that we can to help
more of the great pets waiting in our shelter find loving homes,” said Garganio.
“Home for the Holidays is an easy way for
residents to get into the holiday spirit by
giving
a
new pet the home that they deserve.”
With the shelter nearing capacity, staff
and volunteers are working harder than
ever to find homes for the animals.
“The staff and friends group of the
county animal shelter play a key role in
making this effort a success,” Garganio
added. “They do a spectacular job caring
for our sheltered animals and are as eager
as I am to see them go home with a loving
family.”
The county animal shelter is located on
Academy Drive off of Woodlane Road, behind the Burlington County Library in Westampton Township. Hours of operation
are noon to 7 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays; noon to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and noon to 4 p.m. on
Saturdays. The shelter is closed on Sundays and holidays.
For more information, call the shelter at
(609) 265-5073, visit co.burlington.nj.us/animalshelter, or “like” the county on Facebook @BurlingtonCounty or on Twitter

Perfect score means ‘a lot’ to Woytowich
PERFECT
Continued from page 1
taking this test: He received a perfect score.
Having never taken the test before, Woytowich wanted to focus
his preparations primarily on the
subjects in which he felt he was
not as strong.
“I’m generally better at math
than I am at English, so I took
most of my time preparing going
over the English and writing aspects of the test,” Woytowich
said.
Though he admitted he had no
idea he would score this highly,
he also said he was comfortable
with standardized testing after
taking the SAT twice.
“My mom called me and said
what’s the highest score you can
get on the ACT?” he said.
It turns out the highest possible ACT Composite score is a 36
and that’s what he had received.
Nationally, on average, less
than one-tenth of 1 percent of students who take the ACT earn the
top score. In fact, among test takers in the high school graduating
class of 2015, only 1,598 of more
than 1.92 million students earned
an ACT Composite score of 36.
“This means a lot to me. I’ve always done well in school, but this
has meant a bit more to me. I
think really highly of these
tests,” he said. “Hopefully it will
get me into a good college!”
Luckily for Woytowich, ACT
test scores are accepted by all
major U.S. colleges.
Though he still has another
year of high school to complete,
Woytowich said he plans to get involved with physics as his primary study in college.
He plans to graduate from
Seneca in the spring of 2017.
Along with his success in the
classroom, Woytowich is also a
member of a number of afterschool clubs such as the robotics
team, the marching band, the student government and several
other academic clubs.
In a letter recognizing this exceptional achievement, ACT CEO
Marten Roorda stated, “Your
achievement on the ACT is significant and rare. While test scores
are just one of multiple criteria
that most colleges consider when
making admission decisions,
your exceptional ACT Composite
score should prove helpful as you
pursue your education and career
goals.”
Woytowich
couldn’t
say
enough about the support and encouraging words he has received
from his family, friends and teachers since receiving the news.
Enjoy the holidays,
but don’t forget to…

Although we are a global corporation, our
aggressive expansion is getting the attention of
people in virtually every background. We are
involved with a multi-trillion/year deregulation in
telecommunications and now, in the deregulation of
energy! We work with numerous Fortune 100
companies. In Spring 2011, we were featured on
Prime Time Television based on what we've done.
We will teach you all of the aspects of our business!
• Trainers, public speakers, coaches, sales
consultants
• Work & teach in one on one situations, small
groups, large ballroom settings, and even on
stage in front of 20,000 people
• Be your own boss
• Set your own hours
• Capitalize on three of the biggest industries in the
world: telecommunications, energy, banking
• Work from home
• Company rewards trips
