April IS National Donate Life Month! This spring, join Gift of Life Donor Program in celebrating National Donate Life Month! Each April, National Donate Life Month reminds us of the critical need for organ and tissue donation, and how designating to be a donor can save lives and spread hope. In the U.S., there are more than 112,000 people in need of lifesaving organ transplants—with more than 6,500 men, women and children waiting in our region alone—and each day 18 of those people die waiting for their opportunity for a second chance at life. Help Gift of Life continue to give second chances by learning more about the many ways you can support National Donate Life Month. Find out how you can get involved in these and other initiatives today by visiting our website: www.donors1.org. Gift of Life Sets Records for Donation in 2011, Thanks to Generous Donors On January 25, 2011, 6 month-old Jillian Shallock received the gift of life. Baby Jillian was placed on the pediatric heart transplant list, after being diagnosed with restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM) shortly after birth--a condition which restricted the blood flow to the young girl’s heart. After several months of care, her parents, Billy and Shannon Shallock, were overwhelmed with gratitude for their daughter’s second chance at life. In 2011, 441 generous donors helped families like Jillian’s in Gift of Life Donor Program’s service region, by saying “yes” to donation. With these selfless donors, Gift of Life set a new national record for donation that helped us to coordinate the recovery of 1,185 organs for transplantation. Along with the kind, giving acts of donors and their families, Gift of Life credits this milestone to the hard work and dedication of the region’s 138 acute care hospitals and 16 transplant centers. Their perseverance and dual advocacy for families throughout the transplant process have helped families like Jillian’s, as well as families like that of donor Francis “Franny” Gessler. In the fall of 2011, the 30 year-old father suffered a fatal brain aneurysm during a pickup hockey game. His wife Christine and mother Fran were quickly by his side in the hospital, and knew that organ donation was something Francis would have wanted, as a generous and giving father, son and husband. Recently, Donate Life America kicked off its 20 million in 2012! campaign, to register 20 million Americans by the end of the year. To learn more about how you can help Donate Life America reach this goal, please visit www.donatelife.net. “Families like the Gesslers truly are heroes,” said Gift of Life President and CEO Howard M. Nathan. “We thank those individuals and their loved ones for giving others the gift of a second chance at life in 2011. We will continue to educate our community about the critical need for more organ and tissue donors and to support families awaiting these critical transplants in 2012.” continued on page 4 Ready… “THE Party” Celebrates 10 Years of Fundraising with Donors Are Heroes! This year, Donors Are Heroes is celebrating 10 successful years as advocates for organ and tissue donation by once again throwing “THE Party” at the Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia! Interior designers Don and Renee Freeman founded the event based on personal experience with donation: In 2000, Don learned that he would need a heart transplant. He and Renee waited more than four months for that transplant, and the couple quickly realized firsthand how critical the need for organ and tissue donation had become in this region. In 2001, Renee and Don founded Donors Are Heroes, a committed group of volunteers supporting Gift of Life Donor Program and its charitable supporting organization, Transplant Foundation. The mission of Donors Are Heroes is to raise public awareness about the importance of becoming an organ and tissue donor, and to dispel the myths surrounding this process. Funds raised from “THE Party” go directly towards supporting Gift of Life programs. Last year, “THE Party” raised more than $100,000 to help fund Gift of Life’s public awareness programs, including the “Spirit for Life” school summits and “It’s About Life” grant programs. “THE Party” will be held Friday, April 27, 2012, at the Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia. Partygoers will enjoy fabulous food and beverage, and fashionable attire is requested. Tickets are available now online at http://www.donorsareheroestheparty.com/ Donors Are Heroes raised more than $100K for Gift of Life educational programs at last year’s “THE Party.” ABOVE: Heart recipient Don Freeman (l) and his wife Renee (c) founded Donors Are Heroes after their personal experiences with transplantation. Eric Allen (r) returns as co-chair of the successful “THE Party” at Four Seasons Philadelphia in 2012. | 2 | 17th Annual Dash f Donor Awareness …Set…Dash! or Organ and Tissue Join the 17th Annual Dash for Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness! The Dash is Gift of Life’s annual walk and run, dedicated to helping us promote donation in our region. The Dash features a 5K and 10K run, or a 3K walk, and is geared toward bringing people together for good health, as they help let others know that donation saves lives. Gift of Life Donor Program has been proud to host the Annual Dash for 16 successful years! In 2011, more than 7,000 participants at the Dash helped to make it the most successful to date, by raising more than $400,000 for our educational and community initiatives! There’s no doubt that this year’s 17th Dash will be better than ever! The 2012 Dash is Sunday, April 15th, so mark your calendars and get ready! Run for yourself, a loved one or a friend. Walk with co-workers, congregation members or professional organizations. Become part of the movement to help the more than 6,500 men, women and children on the waiting list for life-saving organ transplants. Log on to the Dash webpage, http://2011dash.kintera.org to register yourself or your team today! | 3 | RECORDS FOR DONATION, continued from page 1 In 2011, an unprecedented number of individuals and families also said “yes” to tissue donation, with more than 2,700 tissue donors— each of whom can save or enhance the lives of up to 50 people. As a result, an estimated number of 40,000 people may be helped, due to the generosity of others. Additionally, 1,235 musculoskeletal donors provided life-enhancing bone allographs for orthopedic surgeries, skin for burn patients, and heart valves to repair defects in 2011. And Gift of Life is grateful for our 2,500 eye donors, whose corneas have been transplanted used to restore precious sight. We offer a heartfelt thanks to our donors and their families who gave the ultimate gift this past year. And we encourage you to share the message of donation with your friends and family, to help us make a difference for the more than 6,500 men, women and children in this region currently on the waiting list for transplants, and the more than 112,000 patients who remain on the list nationally. For more information on organ and tissue donation, please call Gift of Life Donor Program at 1-800-DONORS-1 (1-800-366-6771) or visit us at www.donors1.org. Gift of Life Recognizes Living Donors with “Acts of Love” Ceremony On February 5, Gift of Life Donor Program hosted a special Living Donor Ceremony to honor those who made the incredibly generous decision to give the gift of life by becoming a living donor. This ceremony was held at the Crowne Plaza in Valley Forge, PA and recognized individuals who decided to become living donors during the past two years in our region. The keynote speaker at the ceremony was Margarita Nix, a Philadelphia detective who became an altruistic kidney donor after the death of her son, as a way to memorialize the importance of donation. Shortly after her son succumbed to leukemia, Nix realized the need for donation extended far beyond the precious bone marrow that doctors used to help her child. Nix became an altruistic kidney donor, to commemorate the impact donation had in her life. Also at the ceremony, both living donors and those transplant recipients who have benefited from their gifts participated in a meaningful exchange of Gift of Life pins. Guests were treated to music by “Good Foot,” and a delicious luncheon, with time to mingle and share stories. Many of the donations were performed with the assistance of the Kidney Paired Donation (KPD) registry program, which was created as a means of finding living kidney donors who donate altruistically, then pairing with corresponding kidney patients who are waiting. These recipients then have loved ones willing to donate and continue the chain of donation to another waiting recipient. Through this program living donors who are incompatible with their intended recipients can now donate their kidneys in coordination with other participating donor/recipient pairs in what is known as “paired donation.” TOP: Living donors and recipients exchange special “Acts of Love” pins that commemorate their special bonds. Bottom: Altruistic donor and Philadelphia Detective Margarita Nix (center) was the keynote speaker for the Acts of Love ceremony, which she attended with her family (pictured.) The parade, themed “Just Imagine,” featured 44 floats, including the Donate Life Rose Parade Float titled, “…One More Day.” Gift of Life sponsored two floragraphs—decorative renderings of donors made entirely of floral products: Melissa Yarosh, of York, PA and Francisco “Paco” Rodriguez of Chicago, IL. Paco’s brother and heart recipient represented Gift of Life on the beautifully decorated float, decorated by volunteers from across the country. Alex Rodriguez, brother of donor Francisco “Paco” Rodriguez, rides the Donate Life America Float alongside Paco’s heart recipient, Alexis Sloane. The Donate Life America Float, titled “ …One More Day” featured 28 riders and 72 floragraphs from around the country. Volunteers hold hands in support of the riders on the float, “…One More Day.” Donor floragraphs decorated the Donate Life America float, “…One More Day,” including this representation of Paco Rodriguez. A volunteer puts the finishing touches on floragraphs, including one of York, PA’s Melissa Yarosh. Volunteer Leadership Summit On January 28, 2012, Gift of Life Donor Program welcomed more than 30 volunteers from its coalitions and support groups, who gathered to develop strategies to increase donor designation in 2012 and beyond. Participants engaged in several ice-breaker activities, before hearing from Gift of Life President and CEO Howard M. Nathan, who spoke about the organization’s successes in 2011 and the goals for the coming year. Donor father Tom Gano spoke about the process he uses to set up volunteering opportunities within New Jersey schools. Following the sudden death of their son Curtis in 1987, Gano and his wife Vivian have been active volunteers with Gift of Life. For more than 20 years, Gano has been inspiring educators and students in the region to discuss the importance of donation. Volunteers also heard from Gift of Life staff, who reported on the organization’s Community Relations initiatives and programs for 2012. Leaders from the Gift of Life volunteer groups ended the day by focusing on strategies for how to increase participation and outreach initiatives, and were excited to put these ideas into action in the months ahead! To learn more about becoming a volunteer with Gift of Life, please contact Liz Coyne at [email protected] or 215-557-8090 ext. 1137. | 5 | CLINICAL O R N E R Christiana Improves Donation Outcomes to Become Top Leader in Region In August, 2011, Gift of Life Senior Hospital Services Coordinator Linda Herzog was visiting the Surgical Critical Care Complex at Christiana Hospital, when she was approached by two concerned staff members. David Fitzgerald, RN and his colleague Lauren Litwin, RN were curious about the decrease in donation from their unit during the past few years, and they wanted to know how they could help. “We used to be the best at what we do and we wanted to know—what happened?” said Fitzgerald. “How do we fix that?” During the first three quarters of the year, Christiana had only 59% of possible donors consent. Fitzgerald felt that these numbers were less than representative of what Christiana was capable of, and he asked GLDP what he and his colleagues could do to reverse the downward trend. Gift of Life’s Hospital Services department works hard to build relationships with area hospitals and to improve the outcomes of donation opportunities. When Fitzgerald approached Herzog, she was in the process of assembling a unit-based leadership council to help address some of the issues that Christiana was facing, and invited Fitzgerald’s input. continued inside Christiana Care’s David Fitzgerald and Senior Hospital Services Coordinator Linda Herzog give a presentation on their stellar improvements at Gift of Life’s January 2012 staff meeting. DONOR OUTCOMES, continued from other side Soon, the Surgical Critical Care Complex’s leadership council was formed, and included both Fitzgerald and Litwin, along with Cindy Peters, Nurse Manager; Craig Martine, Staff Development Specialist; Pat Fenimore, Patient Care Coordinator; Jacqui Crawford, OR Assistant Nurse Manager, Joanne Matukaitis, Director, Cardiovascular/Critical Care Patient Services; the group is led by Gerard Fulda, MD, Director, Surgical Critical Care and GLDP Board Member. The Council began meeting August of 2011 to try to improve donation within the SCCC, where more than 61% of the hospital’s donation opportunities occur,” says Dr. Fulda. “We worked closely with Gift of Life to develop a checklist to help guide the exchange between our two organizations, which has gradually improved the hospital’s donation outcomes within the SCCC. In January 2012, Gift of Life co-hosted a first ever “Donation Champion Learning Session” at Christiana. More than ninety nursing personnel and respiratory therapists attended. There are plans to repeat this offering in the near future. But one of the most inspiring changes during the past few months came from Fitzgerald and Litwin themselves. Each month, the staff at the Complex posts a “Heart of the Month” spotlight of an employee who exhibits excellence in donation advocacy and support for donor families. The colorful display is placed in the employee break room, and includes quotes and encouragement from Gift of Life transplant coordinators, letting staff know how important their contributions are to the donation process. Fitzgerald and Litwin have also developed a “Gift of Life” section on the SCCC webpage. They have posted referral triggers, best practices and donation process information and other resources on the website. Now, any member of the SCCC can access organ donation information any time of the day. As a result of the leadership council and staff initiatives, Christiana has experienced unprecedented hospitalwide increases in donation: 45 organ donors and 141 transplants took place in 2011, up from 23 donors and 74 transplants in 2010, the SCCC now has 80% of possible donors go on to save lives through donation, and Christiana Care ended 2011 as the top hospital in Gift of Life’s region for donation. Gift of Life is proud of Christiana’s commitment, and looks forward to working together to save lives in 2012! The “Heart of the Month” presentation is displayed monthly at Christiana Care, as a way to encourage involvement from hospital staff who work with Gift of Life coordinators. Gift of Life Institute Partners with Australia In 2011, the Commonwealth of Australia was looking for educational materials for health professionals in organ and tissue donation, in an effort to improve outcomes. The Commonwealth’s organ procurement organization—the Australia Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Authority—partnered with Gift of Life Institute, and in September 2011, the Insitute’s Patricia Mulvania, RN, BSN, CPTC and Cherry Wise, Ph.D. flew to Canberra and Sydney Australia, to give training sessions on consent and communication for donation. Winning with Transplants in PA • NJ • DE Team Philly 2012 Prepares for Michigan! Every other summer, recipients, living donors, donor families and supporters from eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware participate in a national sporting event to celebrate donation and the success of transplantation. Over the course of four days, transplant recipients and living donors are invited to compete in Olympic-style events against athletes from across the country. Other special events are organized for donor family members, living donors and transplant professionals. Sporting events include a 5K run, badminton, basketball, bowling, cycling, golf racquetball, swimming, table tennis, tennis, track and field and volleyball. Gift of Life Donor Program has traditionally sponsored Team Philadelphia, one of the largest and most decorated teams in the nation, taking home 129 medals at the 2010 U.S. Transplant Games in Madison, WI. Gift of Life Institute’s (center, left) Cherry Wise, Ph.D and Patricia Mulvania, RN, BSN, CPTC (center, right) brought the OPO’s best practices to Australia in 2011, with several return visits planned for 2012. This summer, the Transplant Games of America will be held from July 28-31, 2012 in Grand Rapids, MI. Transplant recipients of all ages and skill levels are invited to compete in track and field, bowling, swimming, table tennis, and more. Living donors may also compete against one another, for medals, and help spread the word that donation saves lives! Gift of Life Institute also provided the Commonwealth with quality assurance and written advice for the systems already in place. Currently, the Australia is ranked 17th in the world for donation, and the Transplantation Authority is looking to improve that standing. In 2012, Gift of Life will be continuing its training with the Commonwealth of Australia, as represented by the Australia Organ and Tissue Donation and Transplantation Authority. The Institute will provide thirteen trainings around the country during the course of three trips to Australia, and will include a visit to Tasmania. Gift of Life Institute is an international training center for donation professionals offering comprehensive, interdisciplinary resources for skills-based learning, continuing education, collaborative research, and consulting services. Established in 2004, we are the non-profit education and research arm of The Transplant Foundation. Team Philly represents at the 2010 games in Madison, WI. After an agonizing year spent mostly in a hospital bed with a rapidly deteriorating liver, I received my transplant in May of 2010. Not a day goes by that I don’t silently thank my donor for the gift I have been given. Before being placed on the transplant list, I had never really encountered the subject of donation. It was not something that was ever really introduced to me, or talked about in my daily life. My family and friends didn’t know much either, and had quite a few misconceptions about donation and transplantation. After my experience, and with a bit more knowledge on Team Philadelphia has always been a tremendous way for Gift of Life’s recipients to help showcase the success of transplantation, promote organ and tissue donation, and honor those who have given the gift of life. the subject, I realized this needed to change. There are thousands of people in our area who are waiting for a gift they may never receive due to a lack of donors. These people are the reason I am driven to tell my Gift of Life Donor Program is proud to sponsor Team Philly this year – join us as we attend the 2012 Transplant Games of America in Grand Rapids, Michigan! story and share my experiences. We need to create a culture of donation, so that it is talked about, and so that www.donors1.org through awareness, donation becomes the norm. This is a problem we can solve. | 7 | www.GiftofLifeFamilyHouse.org update Paying it Forward spring 2012 20 Years Later In celebration of the 20th anniversary of her kidney transplant, Barbara Hylinski with her husband Dr. Joe Hylinski of Blue Bell, PA generously “gifted back” a major contribution to the Family House by underwriting a family guest room. Barbara’s transplant took place 20 years ago on February 5, 1992 and they have chosen to underwrite guest room number 205 to commemorate this extraordinary date. “Receiving my transplant 20 years ago has allowed me to live a full and exciting life. It is a gift you can never repay, you can only pay it forward. Our donation is our thanks and payment forward so that others can share in this modern day miracle.” —Barbara Hylinski We thank the Hylinskis and our other fellow Founders’ Circle Members who have generously given major gifts to the Family House. There are still dedication opportunities available – for more information please contact Sara Cohen, Development Coordinator at 267-546-9812 or [email protected]. Work together to create and plan a “fun-raising” event. Your event might be as easy as a car-wash, bake sale or pancake breakfast. 2. Ways Give a gift. Does your company support charities through a grant program or foundation? Let us know if there’s an opportunity through your company, for us to apply for funding for the Family House. your can company 3. give back to the Get out of the office and dedicate a day of service. Close your office for a day (or a half-day) and let your employees use that time to work at the Family House. We have plenty of volunteer opportunities that also work great as team building activities, such as participating in our Home Cook Heroes program or Family Activity program. Family House 4. Reinforce your brand with every contribution. Does the Family House naturally align with your business? If so, contributing to the Family House will help build your brand. Funneling some of your advertising budget into a contribution instead (which you then highlight in the fewer ads you do run) can be even smarter than running more ads without the positive association. 5. Fashionable Fundraising for Transplant Families Give to the Family House on behalf of your best clientS. HELP CHANGE LIVES at this year’s DASH… One Coin at a Time. Your coins can add up to help families. Bring your extra change and drop it off at the Family House tent on April 15, 2012. In addition to collecting change to support families staying at Gift of Life Family House, you and your children can have fun playing the coin drop game and enjoy prizes, stickers and a special photo area for you to pose with your teammates or family and friends. FIRST: •Acknowledge the situation with your children by starting a conversation about what is happening. • Be open with your children and let them know that it is OK to talk about their feelings, ask questions, and express their concerns or fears. •Ask your children questions about the situation to better understand their feelings. • Don’t ignore the situation just because they aren’t asking questions. Caregiver Lifeline Spotlight REMEMBER: •Listen to them, allow them to talk without interrupting, and allow them to cry if they need to do so. • Be honest with them. However, the information you provide must be age-appropriate in a way that’s understandable to them. •Express how much you love them and that you will always be there for them. by Suzanne Esfahani, Founder of SJTeens: Empowering Tween and Teen Girls Supporting Children with a Parent Listed for Transplant THEY DON’T WANT TO TALK? • Don’t force them. •Let them know that you are available when they need you. • Counseling and support groups allow them to express their feelings with someone separate from the situation and with whom they won’t feel judged. Transplant caregivers experience several different emotions throughout the transplant process: Anxiety, fear, hope and excitement are just a few. Transplants can evoke similar emotions in our children—emotions they may have never felt before or even know how to describe. As parents, it’s our responsibility to support our children during the difficult process of a transplant by accepting their feelings and assisting them in identifying new coping skills. EACH CHILD COPES DIFFERENTLY: •Acknowledge and accept their coping skills, even if they are different from your own. • Introduce new coping skills. •Talk to the transplant social worker if you are unsure of age-appropriate coping skills. Your children may not speak about their feelings, but they are aware of what is going on and are learning how to handle tough situations by following your behaviors. Remember to: LIFE WITH TRANSPLANT: •Try to reduce the chaos by keeping a family schedule to so they know what to expect and when to expect which will help maintain normalcy. •Allow them to continue with their after-school activities and try to attend as much as possible. • Continue to do things together as a family system, such as having a weekly family night. 1. Express your feelings to your children, but don’t put the burden of your emotions on them, making them feel they need to take care of you as well. 2. Reach out to your support systems for help. By asking for help you are showing your children that it is an acceptable positive action to seek support when needed. Transplantation can be difficult for all family members, young and old. Reach out to the transplant social worker if you are feeling lost, need additional resources, or just need someone to talk to for yourself. Following are additional ways for you to assist your children throughout the transplant process. Thirteen year-old Sarah Noye recently celebrated her Bat Mitzvah and wanted to give back to an organization close to her heart. Remembers Father, Husband and Entertains Supporters On Sunday, February 12th the 4th Annual “A Family Affaire” presentation of “Cats: The Musical” took place at the Ritz Theatre Company in Haddon Township, New Jersey. Hosted by the Bottino/ Petrelli family, along with the Southern New Jersey Coalition on Organ and Tissue Donation, this very special performance took place in memory of Joe Bottino, Jr. who sadly passed away five years ago from liver failure caused by Hepatitis C. Joe was on the waiting list to receive a liver transplant when he passed away. “My Dad had a cornea transplant when he was 28 years old,” said Sarah. “He had a disease that made him very close to being blind and the doctors decided that he needed a transplant. Through the efforts of Gift of Life and the generosity of a donor family, my Dad’s vision was restored.” Sarah donated $3000 to the Family House along with Wish List items and was previously a Home Cook Hero with her family. Sarah became interested in the House a few years ago, when her older brother Marshall also donated to Gift of Life after he celebrated his Bar Mitzvah. During the time of his hospitalization, his family would travel back and forth, sometimes up to two hours each way, from their home in New Jersey to Philadelphia, to be by his side. As a result, the family is passionate about Gift of Life Family House and the Adopt-a-Family program. “When my brother, Marshall, did his Mitzvah project with Gift of Life, the Family House was just a dream and a blueprint. In the three years since then, my family has had the opportunity to be part of the building of the Family House and on October 2nd, I was the guest chef at the Family House as part of their Home Cook Heroes Program.” Thank you to Sarah and the entire Noye family! “We feel fulfilled and blessed through our efforts,” says Dianne Bottino of her work with the House. “It is so rewarding to know that we can do something to positively impact the road another family will travel.” All of the proceeds from “A Family Affaire” go to the Adopt-a-Family program at the Family House, to help take some of the financial burden off transplant families. eVeNTS Family House APRiL 15 DASH for Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Philadelphia Art Museum, Philadelphia, PA In addition to celebrating Joe’s life, over $12,000 was raised for the Adopt-a-Family Program. Fundraising events are great ways to increase community and family involvement as well as a wonderful way to build team skill sets…and it’s fun too! Your event might be as easy as an “employee paid” dress down day, a casino night, bake sale or chili cook-off. There are many ways for you to raise the funds for the Family House. If you would like more information or would like to discuss your fundraising concept, please contact Sara Cohen at 215-546-9812 or [email protected].
