Dear Friends,
a message from our board president
evolve lead
Dear Friends,
For more than 100 years, the YWCA South Hampton Roads has
been a leader for women and racial justice. In this regard, our
programs have evolved over the past century to meet the complex
needs of women and minorities throughout the region. As funding
trends have shifted and public policies impacting women and
families have changed during this last year, however, the organization
was forced to consider the relevance and sustainability of each
agency program. Reflections on current program endeavors and
discussions about our future impact culminated in a new campaign
for the YWCA South Hampton Roads - Strong Foundation,
Fearless Future.
Now, more than ever, our programs serve as a cornerstone for the
South Hampton Roads community. Women, children and ethnic
minorities depend on our organization to provide the mission-driven
programs highlighted in this year’s Annual Report. In addition
to sustaining all that is good about each program featured in the
pages that follow, the next year for our organization will focus on
solidifying a strong foundation upon which to build a fearless future
for women and their families. The next year will also include a
movement to make racial justice a component of everything we do
at the YWCA South Hampton Roads as advocates, champions and
agents of change.
I am excited to serve as the new Executive Director for the YWCA
South Hampton Roads. Having been the beneficiary of services
offered by the organization over 25 years ago, I am keenly aware
of the impact the organization can have on women and their families.
I hope that you will join us in the coming year as a volunteer, donor
or community par tner. Your investment of time, talents and
treasures will ensure that the organization becomes a voice for
every woman in our region!
Yours in Service,
2
Ruth
Great things are happening at the YWCA South Hampton Roads!
From our YWCA Kids before and after school childcare program,
to our Women In Crisis domestic violence and emergency
shelter program, to our Response sexual assault support services
and counseling center, to our Racial Justice and Advocacy
initiatives; every day, our management, staff, and board
members do their parts to lead the mission of “eliminating
racism and empowering women.”
In June 2012, we welcomed our new Executive Director, Ruth T.
Jones, to the YWCA South Hampton Roads team. Her experience,
expertise, and passion for our programs and services are just
what we need to continue the great work already being done
by the organization. We are confident that her leadership,
coupled with a great vision for the future, will take us to the
next level of service in our community.
Among these pages, you will see the results of our efforts
for fiscal year 2011-2012. We take great pride in our mission
to lead women and families in crisis to safe, productive, and
enriching lives. We also embrace our mission to lead society
beyond the ills of racism, and into a community of togetherness.
However, we could not provide these critically needed
ser vices without you! On behalf of the Board of Directors of
the YWCA South Hampton Roads, thank you for your leadership
as a supporter of our organization. As we embark on our next
100 years of service, we trust that you will continue to lead
with us, helping us to help South Hampton Roads.

Eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting

..
who we are:
The YWCA South Hampton Roads is the oldest
and largest multicultural women’s organization in
the region.
An artist performs spoken word at our Y Racism? open mic event.
The YWCA South Hampton Roads is the voice for every woman. For over 100
years, the YWCA National Network has been at the forefront of most social movements
in the United States—from voting rights, to civil rights, to pay equity; from violence
prevention to childcare initiatives. We provide safe places for women and girls,
build strong women leaders, and advocate for women’s rights.

be an obstacle to overcome, but a treasure to rejoice in.”

Our subsidized before and after school childcare program offers a safety net for low-to-moderate income

Public Schools. Also, our TechGyrls program engages girls ages 9-13 in STEM-related activities, while
PEARLS promotes self-sufficiency, self-confidence, cultural awareness, and social consciousness for girls
ages 14-18. Our programs provide a valuable service to families in the community, while teaching life and

my story

healing
I came to the YWCA’s Women In Crisis emergency shelter after walking away from an abusive relationship.
I was hurting…I was tired…I was broken. The staff has been so patient and understanding. They are
willing to listen, and I can really feel that they didn’t just hear my story. Many of the staff members
have had similar experiences in the past and were able to overcome those obstacles, which is truly
inspiring. Their experiences make me feel a connection to them because they can relate to what I am
going through, and I know their words and kindness are from the heart. After living in the shelter, I am
now a part of the Rapid Re-Housing Program and I have my own place to call home. It has been a

Purpose:
On October 13, 2011, The YWCA South Hampton Roads embarked upon a new
opportunity to engage men in our community to stand with us against rape, sexual
assault, and gender-based violence. Walk A Mile In Her Shoes was launched as a
community event where men don high-heeled shoes and walk alongside other
advocates in a light-hearted attempt to bring awareness of the very serious issue of
sexual violence and its impact on the community. This event allows men to experience
the world through a woman’s point of view. Men and women were encouraged to
participate–even if not wearing heels.

The Centennial Circle was established in 2010-2011 in commemoration of the YWCA’s
100th year of service. At its inception, 100 women came forward with a pledge of $1,000,
providing critical resources for improvements to our shelter, as well as operating expenses.
As the circle grows beyond the original 100, these pioneering women have created a legacy
of commitment to the YWCA, providing a promise of support for years to come.
