Eid Al-Fitr
by Suma Haji
Every year, Muslims all around the world celebrate Eid
al-Fitr; marking the end of the month of fasting known as
Ramadan. Literally the “Festival of Breaking the Fast”, Eid
al-Fitr is one of the two most important holidays for Muslims;
a celebration of successfully accomplishing an important
obligation. During this Eid, Muslims are not permitted to fast,
instead they enjoy a sweet breakfast with family and friends
and later attend a special Eid prayer. On this holy holiday,
Muslims dress in their nicest clothes, enrich their homes with
sweets and decorations, give presents to their children, and
enjoy time with family and friends.
A feeling of kindness and appreciation encompasses this
holy day. Charity and good deeds are especially emphasized after Ramadan comes to an end. As a part of the holiday, Muslims are obligated to give back by making contributions to the mosque and donating money to the poor.

Ramadan brings along with it many blessings, among those blessings is the Quran.
First revealed in the month of Ramadan, the
Quran is the cornerstone of Islamic teaching
and is thus the most important and reliable
text Muslims go to for answers. This month,
the mosque is further recognizing the importance of the Holy Quran by providing a daily
Quran school for those who choose to attend. People of all ages around the community are encouraged to sign up. The school is
held daily from 5 p.m to 7 p.m and is run by
Brother Abdelraham Rabie. Volunteers from
around the community give their time to
students seeking to learn the Quran, teaching everything from beginner levels to more
advanced reading and tajweed.
“The families actually wanted to start this
school, especially that its summer and the
children have time particularly to memorize
the Quran. So really it’s the community and
the parents who wanted to start this,” Brother
Rabie said.
The school was meant to be during Ramadan only, but already, thoughts of extending
it are being brought up.
“Some people asked me about that and
it will depend, of course, on if we will have
volunteers to teach after Ramadan or not
and the number of students” Brother Rabie
explained.
Norah Alobikan, a student at Eastern Mennonite University, volunteers daily. She teaches
younger kids the basics of Quran as well as
prayer and wudu. “I came because I heard
they wanted volunteers to help teach Quran
so I wanted to help” said Alobikan. “I teach kids

It was narrated that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “Whoever fasts Ramadan
and follows it with six days from Shawwal it is as if they fasted the entire year.”
The Sunnahs that the Muslim should observe on the day of Eid al-Fitr: Doing ghusl (ritual bathing) before going out to the prayer. Eating (e.g dates) before going out to pray. Takbeer on
the day of Eid from the time leaving houses until the call for prayer. Offering congratulations
and best wishes to others. Adorning oneself on the occasion by wearing best clothes. Going
to the prayer by one route and returning by another.
Iftars at the Masjid
by Marwa Bani-Hani
One of the many blessings of the month of
5
Ramadan is its unbelievable bond the brothers and sisters have towards one another.
Setting aside differences and coming together to be one Uma. Our community comes
together every Saturday and Sunday for Iftar
for a great meal and standing side my side in
prayer. The bonds that are made during this
time are unbreakable which carries on even
after Ramadan is over. Coming together for
this meal opens doors of change to the community because it truly shows the meaning of
Islam. Everyone brings in a dish that reflects
their culture and has the chance to try other
kinds of food.
After the fast has been broken and everyone has eaten, a program starts that shares
a unique story about one of the members.
Each story has a lesson behind the true
meaning of what Islam is and how it has
changed so many lives. The first weekend sister Anne B. shared her incredible story of how
she and her family converted and the dramatics change it has brought in her life. The
story was truly inspiring and shows just how
lucky some of us were to be born into the
religion.
If you haven’t been about to come out to
one of these dinners remember its not to late
so bring a dish and join the fun.
There are only two more Iftars
remaining this Ramadan!

kids ages 7 to 8 some Quran as well as how to
make wudu and pray as well as the Arabic alphabet.”
“This will benefit the students by teaching them
about their religion. We’re all Muslim but we need
to learn more so that we can read the Quran.
This school will the help the students read the
Quran inshallah, especially during Ramadan,”
Alobikan said.
Brother Rabie also sees that to be a benefit of the
Quran school.
“I think the biggest benefit of this school is getting
the kids to memorize the Quran and getting the
meaning of it as well as teaching them how to
search for the meaning themselves. It also helps
the kids stay busy during the summer,” Brother
Rabie said.
Students are also an important part of this program, as they are the target. Fred Algood, who’s
36 and would like to learn the Quran, tries to
come daily.
“I hear a lot of brothers and sisters that are speaking Arabic and I’ve always wanted to learn the
Quran. I would like the school to continue after
Ramadan and I want to see the outcome. I’d like
for all the people to come during Ramadan to
come after too. It’s a good environment when
there’s a lot of people here,” Algood said
Parents are encouraged to sign their children up
and people of all ages are invited to come learn
the Quran. Any volunteers should feel free to
contact Brother Adbelrahman Rabie. Information
regarding the continuation of this school after
Ramadan is being discussed and will be announced as soon as a decision has been made.
