I
n this edition, we asked our
talented writers to embrace the
holistic perspectives of Living
in Passion, Purpose, and Gratitude.
May we invite you to challenge your
own beliefs about these topics as you
read the articles? As we explore the insights from a
holistic perspective, we begin to validate deep and
profound wisdom as we realize we are not being
informed as much as we are affirmed.
Developing a sensitivity to the mass consciousness of
One, we begin to realize our life experiences are a part
of the whole and are meant to be shared to find the
stories under the stories.
Moving beyond the literal is noticing how we experience
our stories and the stories of others. Enjoy their
contributions. We look forward to receiving your
written or spoken comments and opinions.

I love you with a tenderness that is limitless as eternity,
That knows no bounds,
That needs no sounds
Of voice for telling of its depths within my being.
I love you with a passion that will not know serenity,
Restless as the sea
Disquieting within me,
Crying for expression, not violent, but moving softly
To the rhythm of my soul.
Aw a k e n i n g
At first I felt you hypnotize,
And then I came to realize
That it was I, my own true self
Who opened wide my spirit’s doors
Into which your beauty pours.
I drink it deep, I make it mine,
It is a feeling near divine,
I’ll hold it there so dear and fine,
And let it shine throughout the life
But I must close the door upon this need, for it is mine alone,
Yours, you must withhold,
With fears and hurts untold,
You are not free to fly with me where selfless space
Could make us, once again, a whole.
I’ve yet to live, and grateful be
I will wait,
And in the meantime want no more than you can give,
But pleasure in your love that brightens every corner
Where I live.
Then rubbed it out,
I will wait,
And should I never know again completion,
Being one with you,
I shall be happy with devoted love we’ve pledged
Our lifetime through.
Then tried to withdraw it
That destiny has brought me thee.
Bondage
I wrote your name,
The stain remained,
‘Twas like your soul,
You shared with me,
So thoughtlessly,
But it was not free,
It was part of me.
Gratitude
You say such loving things to me,
My gratitude within I fear to speak,
Lest I reveal the depth of love I feel,
That I might tread where I’ve no right
To enter in your sacred space,
Where I might wish to find a place
To dwell with you.

Passion, Purpose and Gratitude at Work
By Victoria A. Vetere, PhD, HC
W
hat a great topic — “Living
in passion, purpose and
gratitude”! Just reading
the phrase evokes a positive and
uplifting feeling. How did you
interpret the title of this article?
Did you read it to mean applying
the principles of passion, purpose
and gratitude? Or the existence of
these principles in the world of
work/job? Which did you choose?
How many of us can easily
see and feel passion, purpose and
gratitude in what we are doing
professionally? For so very many
people these three powerfully
fulfilling principles seem quite
removed from their work world.
Even the words “work” and “job”
connote a sense of “toil” and
“effort”. Language is indeed
powerful — it shapes our belief
system and ingrains it. What if
we begin by choosing a different
vocabulary for the concept of
“work/job”? How about “career”?
Or “calling”? Or “service”? Or even
“energy exchange”? Our culture
teaches us both the language and
meaning of “work”. This is further
ingrained by our families. We learn
that work centers on performance and production. This
begins early in life, specifically in school. We learn to be
judged and measured. We learn to measure our worth by
how we perform according to external standards. This
lesson is then reinforced in many ways as it becomes the
model for many aspects of our lives, including relationships
as well as work. And so goes the negative pattern that
[
eventually colors much of our lives;
we learn to live life from the outside
in, trying to measure up so we can
earn our way to love, approval,
status, success, etc.
Dare we even imagine our
“work” (career/calling/service/etc.)
as an inside out experience? If so,
the principles of passion, purpose
and gratitude begin to make sense
in this context. Does this seem like
a lofty and far-fetched suggestion?
Might you be thinking, “Oh right —
I can just see my company, my
supervisor, even my co-workers
getting on the page with passion,
purpose and gratitude! They coined
the phrase ‘starving artist’ for some
good reason, didn’t they?!” May
I simply point out that there are
many very successful and affluent
artists as well as many “starving”
corporate leaders and business
owners. The key here is this; are
they living their Doing from their
Being? Another way to put this is;
are they living their careers from the
outside in or from the inside out?
Most of us are taught the
following formula: DO (work), then
you will HAVE (stuff), and you’ll BE
(happy). This is the outside-in formula. How well does it
really work? How many truly joyful and fulfilled people do
you know who live their lives from the outside in? The
formula of spiritual truth goes like this: BE (who you truly
are) and DO (from your Being) and you will HAVE (all you
desire). This is the road to passion, purpose and gratitude
in career as well as in all aspects of life!
?
Dare we even imagine
our “WORK” as an
inside out experience?

P A S S I O N from a holistic perspective is a word and concept that expresses the action of
masculine energy. PA S S I O N is perceived as the source of energy manifested in highly
energized behavior. It is a necessary dimension of the human experience and is considered
as the “doing” aspect of our life rather than the “being.” PA S S I O N is synonymous with
the movement of desires and must be perceived and acknowledged to be fully appreciated.

make valuable lessons out of both the joyful
and painful experiences of their lives. They have
learned to intensify their curiosity by slowing life
down and learning to experience the full range of
emotions with their mental processes.
The true paradox of passion is a perspective
not often seen. While most people easily see that
it can be experienced in the extremes of intense
activity, passion can also be expressed in the
stillness and silence of a moment. The quality
of presence requires passionate intensity to remain
fully in the moment. Attentiveness in learning
new skills requires passionate intensity. Perhaps
passionate people have learned the passion of a
simple moment that comes from two people
smiling at each other, or acknowledging the shared
passion experienced when acquiring skills in work
or hobbies. Simply said, is the discovery of passion
expressed through the unfolding of a rosebud,
or in the mindful observing of the rosebud?

From a holistic perspective the mind is the
source of passion and the heart is the receiver of
compassion. Even to live compassionately requires
a passionate commitment to those principles.
Teaching the mind to feel through the heart and
the heart to think through the mind brings
balance to passion and compassion. Teaching
ourselves to live in the moment comes from the
passion to be alive, vital, and excited about our
experiences of life.

biological urges and needs, among them the need for
sexual expression. Our human sexuality is a dynamic
force within our personality and physical makeup and
is an important health entity. It can be expressed
wholesomely or dysfunctionally. It can be accepted as
a natural aspect of our being human, enjoying it,
giving richness to everyday living, or sublimated to
the point of causing all kinds of physical, emotional,
and neurological illness and pain.
Passion created by “being in love” can be tender
or overwhelming, just as infatuation, an attachment
of possible passing attraction, can be exciting and
sensuous, or very debilitating. Vengeful passion can
be hateful, unforgiving, discharging toxins into the
body systems, affecting health negatively and
unbalancing chakras. While devotional passions are
most often related to spirituality or religiosity, they
can also be expressed as a reverence in love for
another or self.
“Living in Purpose” directs us to thinking about
our reason for being, making plans, establishing goals,
and pondering the relevancy of our selected values to
our wants and needs. As we seek to develop purpose in
our lives, we structure a belief system which guides us
in making choices and decisions which will contribute
to our state of emotional and social well-being. These
values need not all be static, indeed, such immobility
leaves no room for growth or excitement in exploring
the new or unknown. At times, they may seem almost
kaleidoscopic, coloring our lives with confused
doctrines. Hopefully, eventually, those of value will
settle into reliable harmonious truths. It’s okay to
retain these proven precepts in our treasure chest of
values, but how sad it is for those who can never know
the joy of stepping our of the “little square box.”
“Living in gratitude” is a privilege and life-enriching
necessity. It is a means of valuing others and self
without judgment. To accept gratitude without shame,
questioning, or belittling is a learned experience. The
ability to show gratitude to another honestly and
sincerely is a gift to be cherished. Having gratitude to
our Creator for self, a human being with limitless
potential to enjoy all of His creations, and finding
harmony in living, is a lifetime commitment.
Each of us has within, the ability to develop the
wisdom for living healthily in these realms, “Passion,”
“Purpose,” and “Gratitude.” It is our right and
responsibility to create an environment which will
contribute to and enhance our health and well-being
as well as that of others.

DoBeDoBeDo
By Leigh A. R. Pickenpaugh, D.D.S., M.S.
s a refrain, Sinatra and Shakespeare asked
interesting questions, “Do we do or do we be?”
Bookstores carry an assortment of titles relating
to discovering life’s purpose. Folks with a spiritual
bent are heard asking, “What is my purpose and how
do I find out what I’m supposed to do with my life?”
Frequently both the books and the people are focusing
on the concept of job and career and what we do for a
living. They often lack the balance of considering who
and what we are on this journey through life. While
job and career are important to many of us for self
esteem and income, it is an exterior coating for our
life. It is what lies hidden, the interior of our soul,
that truly seeks a higher purpose. Without examining
both the interior as well as the exterior, we have no
rhythm and no balance in the music of our lives.
Early in life, when we consider our life’s direction,
we tend to focus on what we want to do when we
grow up, and even confuse what we want to do with
who and what we want to be. When meeting new
people the question is usually, “What do you do?”
not, “Who are you?” In this busy world we live in, we
forget that we are Human beings, not Human doings.
So, how do you explore your life’s purpose?
Begin by acknowledging that you are already living
that purpose with each breath you take. No matter
A
12
how many times you have taken the road less traveled,
each choice has brought you the opportunity for
growth and greater wisdom. Each of us travels a path
unique in the Universe – neither your DNA nor your
life’s path will ever be duplicated, and that gives your
journey, no matter how quiet or public, significance
unmatched anywhere.
Instead of asking, “How do I find and realize my
purpose?” can you ask, “Who am I and how can I live
my journey to its fullest?” It is a more crucial question
than what we “do” with our time. Most of us live on
auto-pilot, cruising through our day multi-tasking,
trying to fill every moment doing something. When
we keep that busy, we don’t have to contemplate the
power of our being, or the gift of who we really are.
We evade facing what Nelson Mandela so eloquently
stated: “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond
measure. That most frightens us.” Without recognizing
our fears, or our power, we cannot see who we
are, or understand the gifts found in the experiences
we have had in this life. Without that vision, we
will easily find things to do with our time, and we
will miss the purpose of our being, and knowing
that the vastness of the human soul far exceeds our
physical world.

Finding this aspect of our life’s purpose can best
be explored through two avenues. One is to slow
down and learn to say “no” to some of the opportunities
that come our way. We then have time to listen to the
background music of who we are, exploring the
rhythms and patterns in our life. With these small
spaces of quiet time, our senses come alive, and we
are much more attuned to who we are and how we
fit in to our worlds, our neighborhoods, our friends,
and our families.
A second avenue is by seeking stillness within for
several minutes at a time and acquainting ourselves
with who lives behind the façade of our ‘doing’.
By finding that stillness, our lives become richer with
a far greater potential to be at peace with the happenings
of our daily life.
The greatest gift we can give ourselves is honoring
our uniqueness and acknowledging the blessings that
come with experiencing the world in a way no one
else can. In that way, our exterior world and our
interior world come into rhythm.
In the end, Sinatra had it right. Our lives are a
mix of doing and being, and many of us are out of
balance toward the doing. Without both, as with
the song, we lose our rhythm and sense of purpose
in our being.

• Does the organizational chart and culture place its

• Does the organizational chart appear circular or as

• Does the organizational chart represent a flexible form

infrastructure to study and implement innovative
management structures and processes?
It is evident from these assessment questions that we
need to create organizational structures that support
processes to solve problems. But it is not the structure
of the organization, in and of itself, that matters.
What matters most is that it provides the framework
that enables solving difficult problems, but within
a workplace environment that is based on honesty
and integrity, and that values its people and their
contributions. In the next issue, we will examine the
types of leadership and management that enable
such workplace environments.

The Spirit of Relationships
By John McMullin, H.C.
{
The purpose of a relationship in our business or personal world is to ask another
person to become a CLEAR MIRROR, so we can experience ourselves in a place of
either harmony or discord. The spirit of a relationship has the capacity to become
much more than the sum total of the partners. The following five concepts can be
used to shift a dysfunctional relationship into a respected and/or loving experience.
1
2
3
4
5
{
Both partners must enter the relationship with a solid relationship with themselves. Each partner
must have a conscious awareness of the history they bring to the relationship. They must set aside their
arrogance and need to prove and defend, and become invitational rather than needy in the relationship.
Each partner needs the capacity to expose fear or shame without expecting the other to be
responsible for their experiences. Each is responsible for his or her own perceptions and feelings
and does not expect the other partner to accept the responsibility for taking care of the other.
Each partner must express their limits and boundaries, their values, needs, wants and desires.
Our purpose is not to project surprises or unrealistic expectations onto our partner.
Both have to agree to efficient communication skills that require the ability to express an opinion
without shaming or threatening their partner. Each must agree to agree, or agree to disagree,
and allow each other the opportunity to see the same issue from two different points of view.
Each partner must agree to a relationship without seduction. Our purpose is to be honest with
ourselves and therefore with each other. We are to be mindful that if we ask anything from our partner
by attempting to seduce or distort, resentment is created and the relationship begins to die.
The spirit of a relationship is the FLOW OF ENERGY between two partners who simply realize
their purpose is to give to receive, and receive to give. The issue that destroys relationships,
most of all, comes from one or both partners believing they are unworthy of receiving.

The problem of purpose is not (as many seem to
think) the absence of it, but rather— an inability or
unwillingness to discern its outlines and claim its
power. Purpose is simply purpose, and is built into us,
our relationships, and our work. It can be seen as the
very foundation upon which we base our perceptions
of who we are, and the decisions we make throughout
our lives concerning what and how we will contribute. In “organ talk,” purpose is akin to the reeds,
fixed and held in perfect placement so as to vibrate
and emit beautiful sound.
Those who find themselves either unsure about
their own purpose, or leading organizations without
fervor or enthusiasm, would do well to search
diligently for clarity in this arena. If the “how” in
this seems elusive, perhaps the method Michelangelo
used to create the remarkable statue of David will
help. He said that he chipped away everything that
wasn’t David, and there was David!
Another aspect of Purpose is the recognition that
intention and energy are inherently related. It is
useful, once we have a clearly-defined vision of
purpose, to ask ourselves what intention(s) are we
formulating. As we clarify intent, energy inevitably
moves to bring that intent into form.
The benefit of pulling out the stop of blocked
awareness of purpose is a clear and inviting sense of
direction, which will emerge from a solid foundation,
and resonate with the authentic makeup of the
individual or organization.
The benefit of pulling out the stop of an inactive
belief system is that passion will emerge as an
outpouring of spiritual energy and focus. It matters
little the rituals, dogma or vernacular we use to
showcase our beliefs. What does matter is that we push
those pedals with persistence and create the passion
sufficient to propel us over the hurdles of our stuck
perspectives, and into the present with clear purpose.
It is in passion that we can live the lives for which
we were intended. It is through passionate longing
that we can aspire to, and ultimately reach, the
vital and alive place where spiritual, personal, and
professional lives join as one, expressed with
gratitude, through purpose, and with passion.
L. Lexie Tyus, L.I.S.W. has maintained a private practice
for 30 years in the Columbus area, providing counseling
and psychotherapy to individuals and couples, specializing
in Mood Disorders, Trauma, Addictions Aftercare, Spiritual
Issues, and Work-Related Stress. She also provides training
in the Business and Professional Communities, focusing on
Effective Management and Team Functioning.
STOP THREE
An Inactive Belief System
Nothing can limit the experience of life (not to
mention growth and productivity in the workplace)
as much as this: we arrive last to what is possibly the
most important. It has been said that, as we believe,
so does it seem to be. There is little doubt that we
create using the materials of what we believe (witness
the phenomena of the Self-Fulfilling Prophecy). Our
beliefs are like the air which initiates the sound of the
organ. All of the reeds and bellows in the world
cannot, of their own accord, create the music which
lifts the spirit and causes hands to clap and feet to
move in dance. This is the realm of the spirit, and the
place of passion.

The Movement
of Energy
Through Business
By John McMullin, Ph.D./c, H.C.
The movement of energy in any business is expressed through many avenues including
money, ideas, communications, products and/or services, efficiency, and of course profitability.
Every business is a vessel of energy in which the movement travels with intent or detours
through confusion and unexpected challenges.
B
usiness leaders who clearly articulate the
purpose of their organization often create a
holistic environment integrating mental,
emotional, physical, spiritual and intuitive capabilities
of themselves and their employees. They are looking
for the connection between demand and supply.
Astute leaders understand the importance of creating
the healthy work environment that embraces both
intuitive and logical realms thereby permitting an
efficient look into future and past performance.
Then, they can trust their decisions about the
configuration of their organization.
20
When leaders lose the ability to draw from either
of these two realms the culprit can be found in hidden
shame or fear. Logical analysis can find literal and conscious
blocks to energy flow, however, intuition is the principal
source of uncovering hidden shame or fear. An interesting
paradox is that hidden shame or fear that often blocks
us from accessing the power of intuition.
When leaders become compromised in either the
logical or intuitive realm, they are then relegated to
the process of risky decisions without the benefit of
both radar screens. Following are some basic tips to self
empower the leader of a business logically and intuitively.

Optimum Health
A Ve h i c l e R a t h e r T h a n A D e s t i n a t i o n
By Nancy Addison, HHC
M
any people go through an entire lifetime not
realizing their purpose in life. Some never experience the exhilaration of pursuing their passion.
Most of us know people like this. Perhaps you see yourself
in this description. Living what is sometimes referred to as a
mundane life can lead to the inability to cope. The result is
that the body responds by expressing many different types
of internal and external symptoms. Disease, depression,
anxiety, chronic illness, immune disorders, skin rashes,
allergies and asthma are just a few. Achieving optimum
health brings us closer to our spirit and allows us to
experience a higher purpose and complete fulfillment.
Ask anyone who is excited about life, or is living life to its
fullest, if they can remember the last time they were sick.
You may be asking, “Where do I start?” I suggest daily
meditation or finding a daily spiritual practice that is
comfortable for you. Many scientific studies have proven
the positive health benefits of meditation and other
spiritual practices. In addition to these benefits, meditation
can bring insight to your life’s purpose and can improve
concentration and creativity, thus opening the door for
many new personal discoveries. Many healers believe that
daily meditation is one of the best ways to open
communication between our spirit, our body, God, the
universal consciousness and all that exists.
Finding your passion and living your life’s purpose
will occur as a result of balanced nutrition. As your body
becomes nourished and balanced, amazing things begin
to unfold . . . physically, emotionally and spiritually. Keep
in mind, nutrition comes from many sources. The word
“nutrition” is more familiar as it relates to food intake
through our mouths. Even dieticians and nutritionists
concentrate mostly on what we eat. However, Webster’s
dictionary defines the word nutrition as,
“the act or process of nourishing or being
nourished.” What is clear to me is that
eating habits are a direct reflection
of the balance (or imbalance)
of other aspects of our lives.
Everything is food. All
that life has to offer
nourishes you each
and every day.
For example, simple things often taken for granted, like
meaningful conversations with loved ones, a quiet walk in
the woods, or just being grateful for your existence, can
nourish you. So it is important for you to discover which
“foods” are missing from your life.
{
FINDING
YOUR PASSION
AND LIVING YOUR LIFE’S PURPOSE
WILL OCCUR AS A RESULT OF
BALANCED NUTRITION.
{
Try the following exercise to explore areas of your own
life that may need more nourishment. On a piece of paper,
list the following words: creativity, finances, career, education,
home cooking, physical activity, health, home environment,
relationships, social life, joy and spirituality. Now rate each
of these areas of your life on a scale of 1 through 10. Quickly
write down the very first number that comes to your mind.
Too much time spent thinking about your answer will
involve ego and will not reflect real truth from your soul.
A category with a low number indicates dissatisfaction, and
a higher number of 10 indicates ultimate happiness. When
this exercise is finished you will have a clear vision of the
imbalances in your life. Then you can explore areas that need
more of your time and energy to achieve optimum health.
Optimum health is a vehicle, not a destination. Do the
research. Learn about all the many healing methods and
techniques available to you. Talk to practitioners. Discover
which ones work best for you. As you begin to experience
improved health, your life purpose and passion will become
very clear simply as a result of your wellness journey.

control of the persons who had all the money. If we
choose to believe that today, we will be endlessly
stuck in a job we do not like. Ask yourself the question,
“If there were no limitations, what would I really like
to do to make a living?” Another pivotal question is,
“What is my unique life purpose now?” Take time to

understand your life mission and everyday move
forward, knowing what it is. It may change as you
grow and learn. We do not have to have a completed
concept of our purpose. Maybe what we naturally and
simply do every day is it, but because we feel it is so
simple, we make it insignificant. To dissect and determine
what our life purpose is will become apparent when
we can relax into understanding our feelings.
A life purpose does not have to be lived on a grand
scale. Every person who finds joy in the simple daily
tasks done well creates an intricate fabric for everyone
everywhere to live successfully. We are not all
Da Vinci, Thomas Edison, Alexander Graham Bell,
Madame Curie or Bill Gates: even they could not have
accomplished their hearts desires and achieved their
success if it had not been for all the people believing
in them and working along with them toward success.
Our purpose may be a Bill Gates or just as important
the “little person.” What ever it is, celebrate that!
Since I was ten years old, my creative expression
has always been writing in a journal. A journal helps
me find words that best express my feelings and
desires. Writing down my fears, anxieties, joys and
successes gives me the opportunity to fine-tune my
awareness so that what shows up in every moment
becomes the right tool for shaping the kind of life I
want to live. Writing defines my life purpose as it
unfolds from one year to the next. Sometimes from
one month to the next. Writing helps me live
passionately doing the things I love to do. I have had
many jobs and opportunities, some were successful
and some were not but each taught me something

useful and all were significant to what I am doing
now. Every situation fine-tuned my awareness to
see the contrast between that which I did not want
and that which I did want. I had to find words to
adequately express my feelings and let the words
show up on the page. My written words become
my emotional guidance system much like a GPS in
today’s modern vehicles. EGS and GPS guidance
systems always begin where we are and we program
in where we want to go. Emotions are the indicators
to knowing if we are in alignment with our desires,
purpose and goals or not.
When in doubt about your life, surf the Internet
and find a program, person, or place to find the
answers you need. Allow yourself the wisdom that is
within you, to ask for the help you need. When you
can work through your angst, you will find perfect
answers. Angst is often your best motivator and tool,
unless you choose to stay stuck because of old
concepts and belief systems
Know what it is you want and are passionate
about, and then go for it one small step at a time.
With every step count your blessings and be grateful.
Your first step into that which is unknown will be
the biggest step to take.

“Forgotten In Time...
The Ancient Solfeggio”
A Personal Journey of Living with Passion, Purpose and Gratitude!
By David Hulse, D.D.
Being a student of metaphysical teachings in the
late 80’s, I was faced with
a dichotomy in the idea
that we are not a body.
I never understood this
statement fully until I
read a quotation by Albert
Einstein that stated:
“Concerning matter,
we have been all wrong.
What we have called
matter is energy, whose
vibration has been so
lowered as to be perceptible
to the senses. There is no matter.” I believe what is being
stated is, that at the deepest level, we are not separate, as a
body, as a spirit, as a soul — we are just energy-beings.
I was first introduced to DNA in 1988. I was going
through a transitional period, during which, I felt that I had
come to the end of many beliefs I had been taught from
childhood. I was listening to a tape that had been given to
me. A gentleman was speaking with an accent (which, at
the time I thought was rather boring) and I didn’t understand what he was talking about. Then, suddenly, as I was
ready to turn it off, he said: “Quantum physics has found
that there is no empty space in the human cell, but it is a
teeming, electro-magnetic field of possibility or potential.”
That’s all he said! Whatever frequency was contained in
those words, resonated a deep knowing inside the core of
my being, and I had a “Knowing” in me that the “NOTHING” I thought I was looking at, was the “EVERYTHING”;
much like in Zen…the idea of becoming “as an empty
bowl”. Eastern Religions (including the Bible) refer to it as
the VOID – The “Nothing” that is “Everything” – The
Womb of Creation. I knew that I was experiencing a
re-birth! The person on that tape was Dr. Deepak Chopra.
As I pursued my passion for the study of DNA, I attended
a workshop by Dr. Robert Gerard from California on DNA
Activation. His work focused on using certain sounds and
frequencies to activate
DNA and I started doing
DNA Activation workshops. Through those
workshops, an article was
given to me that reported
how biochemists were
using the frequency 528
Hz to repair human DNA,
the “blueprint of life”.
This frequency had been
a part of an ancient
sequence of frequencies
called the Solfeggio.
At the turn of the century,
my accelerating interest and research into the lost frequencies
of the Ancient Solfeggio served as the Spirit-guided catalyst
for the purpose of bringing these tones back into use. I
firmly believe that these sacred tones actually serve as a
“vibrational bridge” to holistic reintegration of the physical,
mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of the individual.
After I founded SomaEnergetics, it became increasingly
apparent that my method of using these tuning forks appeared
to be helping individuals optimize their energy, giving them an
enhanced sense of well being by facilitating the release, and
stimulating the flow, of blocked or stagnant energy.
A Chinese saying states; “May you live in interesting
times.” I am grateful that we are living in interesting times.
Our purpose is to assist others. It’s not to be their ‘Healer,’
but to assist them in knowing who they are and in connecting
with their true Self. We provide a non-judgmental atmosphere,
a sacred space, for the purpose of healing themselves.
I invite you to be a co-creator with me as we pursue with
passion and gratitude bringing these powerful healing tones
back into use.

Using Feng Shui
W h e n D e c o r a t i n g Wo r k C u b i c l e s
Wi l l I m p r o v e Yo u r P r o d u c t i v i t y !
By Troy Doucet
When decorating work cubicles, a little knowledge of
feng shui can go a long way. Here are a few helpful hints
that will improve your day in the cube. By implementing
these simple changes when decorating work cubicles, you will
immediately feel dramatic improvement to your work day.
T
he biggest feng shui problem with cubicles is
that your back is to the entranceway. You are
unable to see when people approach the doorway
behind you, causing a constant unsettling environment.
Feng shui is about harmony of your environment,
and having your back to the entranceway is a major
disruption to that harmony. Fortunately, there is a
“cure”. Place a mirror inside the cubicle that reflects
the entranceway behind you. This way, you can
always see who is approaching from behind.
Even though a cubicle is a very small area, it is
still an office. The rules of feng shui in the home, and
regular sized offices, also apply when decorating work
cubicles. For example, in 2006, you absolutely do not
want to sit facing North-West as this can cause severe
financial problems. Keep this feng shui rule in mind
when working at the home or office.
When placing decorative items on your desk or
on the walls of your cubicle, follow the overall
directional placement of feng shui. Electronic items,
such as your computer monitor, are best placed in
28
the West or North West. Candles and items red in
color should be kept in the South. A small moving
water feature can be placed in Southeast, East, or
North… just don’t put it behind you.
The most important thing to remember, when
decorating your cubicle is to avoid clutter! In such a
small area this can be difficult, but is still very
important. A cluttered desk makes for a cluttered
mind. As far as decor, keep things around you that are
indicative of your business. General business pictures
and decor is appropriate, as well as a few personal
family items. Don’t go overboard. Even if little fluffy
the cat is your life’s love, it doesn’t serve you to have
his picture on every surface of your work space!
Appropriately decorating your cubicle is your best
bet to increase work productivity.

Embodying Gratitude
By Paul Linden, Ph.D.
Feeling thankful for what life brings is a key element in a wellness-oriented style of living. What is the
alternative to gratitude? Disappointed expectations and resentment, which certainly won’t contribute to
health or comfort. However, life throws a lot of strange things at us, and it’s hard to be grateful for all
of them. How can we practice an attitude of gratefulness that is independent of what happens to us?
y laboratory for researching
questions like this one is
Aikido, the non-violent
Japanese martial art I have been
practicing and teaching for
thirty-seven years. Aikido defense
techniques are smooth, circular
and flowing. Moving in a gentle,
graceful (yet effective) way is
certainly the last thing we’d do
naturally when we’re attacked
physically. Our instinctive way
of responding is to get tight and
hard as preparation for running or
fighting, but Aikido teaches us to
be relaxed as a foundation for
effective self-defense.
As I practiced staying soft
while responding to being
attacked, I began to realize the
importance of the body for
effective spiritual change. It
is often said in Aikido that the
attack is a gift. The quick response
to that idea is, “With friends like
that, who needs enemies?” And
then we go back to practicing the
smooth, flowing Aikido techniques.
By spending many hours training our bodies to
remain calm and open while being attacked, Aikido
practitioners learn to create a different attitude
towards the attack and towards the attacker. By
keeping the body soft, we learn to keep a gentle
attitude and accept the attack as a gift.
M
Being In Movement®
mind-body training, (www.beingin-movement.com) the body work
I have developed, also approaches
psycho-spiritual change through
body training. Let’s try an experiment.
Think of some unpleasant event
that happened to you.
Just for a moment, dwell on
the unpleasantness. Let yourself
even resent the event. What happens
in your body? What happens to
your breathing? What happens to
your neck, to your back? Do you
notice anything else in your body
changing? Most people notice that
they become physically constricted
and tight. That physical hardness
is the essence of the attitude of
resentment.
Try instead thinking of something that makes your heart smile,
especially something that makes
you feel thankful. What do you
notice happening in your body
now? Most people will feel softening,
or warmth, or expansiveness,
especially in their chests and
breathing. This physical softening is the essence of
the attitude of gratitude.
If you take a few minutes every day to practice
this physical action, you will find that it will start to
become very familiar. After a while, you will be able
to go directly to the physical action without having to

of gratitude...

use the mental imagery to achieve it. And as that skill
develops, you will be able to choose to meet the
difficulties that come your way with an attitude of
gratitude. Through paying attention to your breathing,
muscle tone, posture and movement on a moment-tomoment basis as you go about your daily life, you can
learn to notice when you are functioning in a state of
resentment and replace that with a mind-body state
of gratefulness.
Imagine a tennis player getting up every morning
and putting in an hour practicing a poor tennis serve?
What would she or he learn? What habit would they
ingrain in their body? The habit of executing the tennis serve wrong, of course. What are the results of
practicing the physical action of hardening the body
on a long-term basis? Clearly it would be physical
tension and negative feelings.
Could it be that hardening the body has some role
in creating the backaches, headaches, and other
physical discomforts that so many people experience?
Maintaining a sense of gratitude in your body can
help you function better and feel better in all your
daily activities. Beyond physical discomfort, think
about how we treat each other when our bodies are
hard. Physical hardness translates into fear, anger,
and other negative feelings. Hardening the body,
undoubtedly, is part of the cause of the general
insensitivity and lack of compassion that is the root
of so many social problems. Softening the body in
gratitude could help us all get along with each other
better on this crowded planet we all share.
The body attitude of gratefulness is part of the
solution to a broad range of problems in the physical,
emotional, social and even political areas of life. Our
bodies function better in the state of gratitude, and
learning to pay attention to our bodies is a way of
cultivating a lifestyle of wholeness and wellness.

Memphis
James
By Harry E. Eisel, Ph.D.
L
earning to live a passionate life has to do with
learning to hear the intuitions and more
importantly following them. For a number of
months I had a sense of needing to go to Memphis,
Tennessee. I was not sure why, but logically deduced
that it had something to do with Elvis and my recent
interest in listening to the all Elvis channel on Sirius
radio. I had even mentioned my interest in Memphis
to a number of people, in the hope of finding a
co-driver for the trip. After about three months I
mentioned the trip to a friend, who immediately said
he was interested. He said that he really wanted to go
to Nashville, but would be willing to go on to Memphis.
There were few plans made before we left. I had
obtained a couple of AAA maps, but no reservations
were made and there was no itinerary. We had four
days to travel and I had this sense that I was to meet
someone or learn something in Memphis. On the first
32
day of our trip we arrived in Nashville about 3:00 p.m.
and on a whim I decided to drive on to Memphis.
Arriving in Memphis we found a hotel and proceeded
to drive around the city. My friend was map challenged,
so I simply drove, turning here and there without any
plan. We passed St. Jude’s hospital, then came across
Beale Street, and even wandered to the river walk,
where we took the time to look out at the Mississippi.
I asked my friend to find Union Street, where I
believed the Sun Recording Studio to be. By the time
he had the map out, I came across the intersection of
Union Street and drove to the studio.
We had intended to simply drive by, but the
painted sign on the second story of the building
caught my eye. In large letters it said “free parking in
rear.” We drove to the back and got out of our car to
go read the historical marker in front of the building.
As we walked toward the building, a man got out of
an old pick-up truck and began to question why we
were there. I told him we were going to look at the
building and he told us “There is nothing to see.
The building is closed because they are recording.”
He then added that the curtains were drawn and
we could not see in. He advised us to come back
tomorrow and take the tour.
For some reason, my friend and I began to talk to
him, and soon he was telling us his story. He told me
that he had been the recording engineer there for 20
years. Spontaneously, he added that he loved his job.
“I never made much money (I could tell that by his
pick-up truck), but I have been able to do things few
people get to do.” He went on to tell us stories about
playing the acoustic guitar with Carl Perkins. He
spoke of supervising recording sessions with Paul
Simon, Jerry Lee Lewis and others. He felt comfortable
enough to tell us how rewarding it had been to do
something that he loved, and how the value of his
work was not in the income, but in the opportunity
to meet people. His passion was contagious and I
began to cry just listening to him recall his life. He
shared with us how he had just stepped out of the
studio to read a magazine article, while his assistant
was recording an artist from Australia.
As we shared our thoughts, he asked if we would
like to watch the recording. Without waiting for an
answer he opened the back door and ushered us into the
studio’s upper level where all of the recording equipment
was housed. We stood there and looked down on the
man in the studio as he prepared for his next song.

Upon returning to the parking lot I thanked him
and said that for some reason I needed to meet him,
and he responded that he felt a similar sense about
the meeting. My friend began to list the odds of such
a meeting and how much of it had depended on us
responding to our instincts, the instinct to drive on
through to Memphis that day, to park in the rear of the
building, and even James’ instinct to leave the studio
to read a magazine article. As I drove away I knew I
was supposed to meet James, but had no idea why.
And now I wonder if the purpose of our meeting
was to write about that adventure so that I could
pass on the feeling of passion in choosing one’s
employment. For James, and few others, their job
has been a passion. They chose work that gave them
greater feelings than income. I remember talking to a
dear friend who told me how he had a passion for
flying and would love to be a commercial pilot. Then
he paused and lamented that to make the change he
would have to give up his current salary and settle for
an income of 25% of his present income. He concluded
that he would give up his passion so that he could
continue his current lifestyle.
Memphis James drove a beat-up pick-up and
probably did not have a 401K, or even a summer home,
but he lived with a commitment and passion that few
people have. I am glad that I met that man and as I
said to my friend when we got into the car, “we can go
home now, the trip for me was about meeting James.”
Two months later I still do not know why I had to
meet James, but I have no doubt that my intuition to
go to Memphis was real. For me, living with passion
accepts such intuitions and requires me to act on
them. A few years back when I was first diagnosed
with cancer, a friend asked me what I was proudest
of in my life. With little hesitation, I said that it was
the willingness to see doorways (the intuitions) and
having the courage to walk through them. Logic is a
fine tool in the process of working on syllogisms and
computer programming, but sometimes living a
passionate life means not always making decisions
based on logic. Had I relied on logic I never would have
gone to Memphis, and I never would have met James.

Faith
and the
Future
By Harry E. Eisel, Ph.D.
ast night I was meditating
and trying to uncover some
sense of purpose or direction
for my life. Wondering what was
there for me to do. As I struggled
to reach some level of clarity, I
began to recall all of the times
in my life when I was at a similar
point. I remembered the many
times when I had to choose from
several options, and the times
when my life seemed to be
without direction or meaning.
I could even recall the exact
words of some of my prayers
from years before, when I asked,
and begged God to show me some
sign to make the choice easier.
As those moments flashed
in my thoughts, I became aware
that I had no memory of ever
receiving any clear answer at the
end of my prayer. Now that is not
to say that I did not receive an
answer. In fact looking back I can
recall a number of times that the
answer was clear, although I had
to wait on the clarity for one, two
or even six months. It seemed that the answer always came
on a different time frame from my prayers and my desires.
As I considered these historical memories, another
memory flashed before my consciousness. It was the memory
of a simple exercise that I had performed during one of my
visits to my favorite Trappist monastery. It was the week
before Christmas and I had left the monastery structures to
go walking in the fields and hills across the street. There was
one road that went back into the hills. It was the road used
L
for tractors and other supply
trucks. It was composed of two
paths of gravel for the wheels
separated by a grassy strip. At the
time I was virtually alone, no
trucks or people within eye-sight
of my walking. I decided to try to
walk on the path with my eyes
closed. I was intrigued to see how
far I could go on the path. As soon
as I closed my eyes and began walking, I became very sensitive to the
sound of the gravel beneath my
feet and the difference in feel of
the gravel versus the grassy strips.
Those two factors were my clues as
to whether I was on the path. In
that process of walking I became
very focused on the moment, of
each step. My focus was simply
trying to stay on the path. Of
course in the process I also became
more aware of the sounds of the
birds and the wind caressing the
branches. I was no longer
concerned about where the path
led, or where the path ended. My
focus was on being able to stay on
the path where I was. My focus became not so much on the
path in the distance, or the time, or the destination, it was
quite simply making sure that each step I took was placed in
the path and not on the grassy strips to either side of the gravel.
I walked this path for nearly an hour. Each time that I found
myself on the grass, I would open my eyes to reposition
myself on the gravel, for the goal was not to reach the bend in
the road around the hill, or to look for animals or birds, the
goal very simple, was to stay on the path.
The path would take me
wherever it was going.
I simply had to listen
for the signs that told me
I was still on the path.
34

I recall now, that as I walked that path, I did not know where
I was going. I simply knew that my goal was to stay on the path.
The path would take me wherever it was going. I simply had to
listen for the signs that told me I was still on the path.
In that memory of a simple exercise, I realized that it
was not important to know where I was going in life. It was
not necessary to know my destination – what was necessary,
quite simply, was to stay on the path.
Alternate versions of the story:
After writing the above, an old friend, who happened to
be a psychiatrist, added a new dimension to the concept.
He changed the walk a bit and suggested that as you walked
on the path you find a key. His question was “what does the
key look like and what would you do with the key?” He
then said that later on the journey you find a cup, then
later a bear and then a lake. Each time he asked what does
the cup, the bear and the lake look like, and what would
you do. Of course because he was a psychiatrist, each of
these had a symbolic meaning.
So you are challenged to go on this visual journey and
come upon the key, the cup, the bear and the lake. Then
write your description and jot down what you would do.
Later you will find how to interpret your answers.
The second alternative version has to do with finding
gold coins on the path. If every few yards you found a gold
coin on the ground what would you do with the coins?
Interpretations to the alternate stories:
The psychiatrist said that the key represents riches and
one’s quest for financial security. What the key looks like
and what you do with it represents your approach to riches.
The cup symbolizes your desire for happiness. The bear is
life’s unseen dangers and how you perceive them, e.g. life
threatening or adventuresome, and how you deal with those
dangers. Lastly, the lake is a symbol for sex.
The gold coin story is much simpler. The person who
collects every coin found will soon discover that the journey
is slowed by the weight of the trinkets picked up and carried.
At some point the gold must be hidden on the side of the
road so the person can continue. The person then goes on
to collect as many coins as possible and then brings them
back to the first batch. Afraid that someone might take the
treasure the person sits guard, building traps and
fortifications to protect the find. The journey on the path has
ended because of the value of what one found along the path.
Now consider for a moment that the person simply
picked up the coins, admired them and set them back down
for the next traveler to enjoy. In this case the person is not
weighed down with the coins and can continue on the path.
Imagine that at the end of the path there is a community
that does not value gold, a community that uses barter and
love to provide for its members, and then stepping back in
history one may discover that the gold was on the path
because the person knowing the destination realized that
the gold would be useless and unnecessary. But, the gold
was not all dumped in one pile because it took time to
realize and believe that it would not be important for the
journey, and so it was discarded slowly.
How we choose to walk our path, and what we choose
to carry with us, will determine the ultimate satisfaction
of being on the path. That satisfaction comes forth from
the quality of life and the passion with which we live.
Unfortunately, there will be many distractions and possessions
along the path which, if not valued correctly, may alter our
long term satisfaction. Take time to enjoy the path, and to
enjoy the blessings along one’s path, but be careful not to
value such trinkets over the process of walking the path.

ANIMALS/PETS
The Capital Area Humane Society provides sheltering and care for an amazing number of animals.
Our staff and volunteers are very dedicated, using all available resources to do the best they can for as
many animals as possible.
Capital Area
Humane Society
CAHS shelters thousands of animals each year, responds to more than 6,000 requests for animal cruelty
investigations, places nearly 95% of adoptable animals, provides animal assisted therapy to children
and seniors at area hospitals and retirement homes, teaches basic obedience skills through dog and
puppy training classes and through spay/neuter efforts, prevents the unwanted birth of companion
animals. CAHS has an on-site medical staff and veterinary clinic which provide care for both animals
at the shelter and in our foster care program. All adopted animals receive basic vaccinations, rabies
inoculation, testing for contagious disease, and all are spayed or neutered.
The Capital Area Humane Society is located at 3015 Scioto-Darby Executive Court in Hilliard, Ohio.
CAHS is open Monday – Friday from 2:00 -7:00 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 1:00 -5:00 pm.
Reiki simply means Universal Life Energy, that which flows through and animates all living things.
During a session, life energy flows through my hands as I gently touch the animal. Often animals will
indicate to me where to direct the energy. Reiki helps balance energy flow, lessen anxiety, alleviate
pain, heal injuries and illness, extend longevity and maintain physical well-being. Reiki is also very
beneficial in hospice care: the energy is soothing to animals who are in the last stages of physical live.
Reiki is a very gentle, holistic approach to improving quality of life and longevity for all our animal
friends. Contact: Aisha Z. Shael, Reiki Master ~ 614-798-9611 or Email: [email protected]
BODY CENTERED TRANSFORMATION
Through the vehicle of Aikido, we teach how to use body awareness, open breath, stable posture and
flowing energy to achieve relaxation, balance, coordination, empowerment, and compassion. Aikido is
a non-violent Japanese martial art, and its defense techniques go along with the attack to control it.
Aikido aims at protecting yourself without injuring another human being. Aikido is a form of physical
exercise which is intellectually and spiritually fascinating. Because students move and learn at their own
pace, people can practice and enjoy Aikido for their whole lives.
Adults’ and children’s classes are offered. Visitors are welcome to observe classes or try one for free.

Andy Stuck, Ph.D., L.I.S.W. Orders of Love / Movements of the Soul:
A Family Systems Approach to Freedom
While traditional therapy often centers on the individual, Orders of Love concentrates on the family
system, offering unique insight into the ties that bind us to others. Orders of Love is not about pathology
or diagnosis, rather, it is about the honor, respect and love that promote freedom from suffering.
Bert Hellinger created the Orders of Love. He believes there are natural laws or ways that love flows
among relationships: from parent to child, between partners and among family members. Ignoring
those laws, or orders, brings about consequences that bind or inhibit our ability to be successful in
other realms of our lives, like relationships and careers.
Andy Stuck
Ph.D., L.I.S.W.
Understanding these orders within our own family systems, knowing how they govern our
relationships, and focusing on what makes people strong rather than weak offers us a frame of
reference that can offer life-enhancing solutions.
Orders of Love works for people who feel burdened by personal issues that prevent their happiness
and impede their growth and success. It can address various aspects of life, including interpersonal
relationships, death, divorce, adoption, incest, rape, murder, illness and addiction, as well as
organizational dilemmas. Orders of Love guides participants toward profound healing through
its simplicity and spiritual base.

COOKING WITH A CONSCIENCE. Ethics in life is everything. It is a great understatement to say that
trying to run an ethically green cafe in the middle of a city in the twenty-first century is a challenge.
It is expensive and labor intensive, but we do it. We shun anything that is ready made. We buy our

Nutritionally confused? Convinced that diet and lifestyle changes could help solve your health and
weight problems? Know you’re going to need some help?
At The Wellness Forum, we believe that health improvement and weight loss can only happen when
permanent diet and lifestyle changes are made. Although there’s lots of information out there, most
people don’t know how to sort it out and don’t know how to apply the information to their daily lives.
Furthermore, most people aren’t aware of how much industry and advertising affect the health information they receive. The Wellness Forum is an international, independent educational organization
offering unbiased information in a user-friendly format with several support options.
