Lisbon 15 & 19-20 May 2014 SPRING RESEARCH SCHOOL European Crisis Beyond Economy The Union’s Political Future Organization Institutional Partners /About At the Spring Research School you will be given the chance to interact with researchers from a wide range of backgrounds and cultures, who are working in different areas. You will be given a unique opportunity to exchange insights and debate opinions, form friendships and expand your network of contacts. Young researchers will be able to immerse themselves in the Portuguese culture, while experiencing its education system and political and culture institutions. Moreover, they will be exposed to a cultural and academic dynamic of Latin-American studies, focusing on Iberian issues, as well institutions and research studies who share the same scientific interests on this subject. The Political Observatory was created in 2009 by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the New University of Lisbon. The development of a wide range of academic and scientific activities (research projects, exchange programs, seminars and conferences, publication of the Portuguese Political Science Review) led the Political Observatory to acquire an autonomous status working in cooperation with a considerable number of other Portuguese universities. With 27 PhD researchers and 60 associated researchers, the Political Observatory has now almost 200 associated members, who collaborate in the development of study and analysis of national and world politics. /Mission Publication of Portuguese Journal of Political Science; Internationalization of research in BA, MA and PhD levels; Creation of a network of international research projects and trans-disciplinary groups. /Main research areas Politics and Culture; Institutional and Political Processes; Security, Defense and Strategy. /Research networks RELESI (Rede em Língua Portuguesa de Ensino Superior e Investigação); REIA (Rede de Estudos Ibero Americana). OBSERVATÓRIO POLÍTICO 4 | Spring Research School /About Founded in 1990, the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs (GATECH, Georgia USA) enrols more than 500 students in its Bachelor of Science, professional Masters, and research-focused doctoral programs. Twenty-two full-time faculty members teach and conduct research on a broad array of topics with a particular focus on how technological innovations affect national security, economic competitiveness, and prospects for international cooperation and conflict. /Mission The School envisions three clear and challenging missions in the years ahead: 1) educating the next generation of scientists, engineers, and policy specialists for careers in public service and the private and non-profit sectors; 2) producing and disseminating research that informs policy; and 3) sponsoring public programs that examine and offer innovative solutions to critical issues facing the state, region, and world. /Research groups The School is also home to two active Centers: 1) the Center for International Strategy, Technology, and Policy – a policy-relevant, action-oriented, research center; and 2) the European Union Center of Excellence – a scholarly research and outreach organization.
