GARE DO ORIENTE: LISBON, PORTUGAL TASK 2: TECHNOLOGY // 11516 COMPUTATIONAL ENVIRONMENTS TENEIL VAN DYCK 10449736 TRISTAN DAVISON 10448898 TASK 02 // TENEIL VAN DYCK + TRISTAN DAVISON // TECHNOLOGY 1.CP MOBILE CP mobile is a downloadable application enabling direct access to the rail networks timetable on portable devices such as mobile phones and PDA’s. The interface allows the user to define the search options for instant results. 1 The new service initiative was launched on 5th December 2010. ECO- ViagemCP: In addition to timetable information the application includes ecological data enabling the user to verify the quantity of CO2 emissions generated through their selected transport route. The application enables the user to recognise the environmental advantages of travelling by train in opposition to private modes of transport. CP Mobile: Advantages/Disadvantages: Advantages: - Train Schedules and Itineraries are permanently updated. Organisation and services transcribed to citizens. User can consult the train schedules anytime and any location. Diversification of communication channels used by CP further informing the public. Overall modernization of transport systems. Disadvantages: - Through creating transparent timetabling knowledge to the public ,reliability and efficiency of the transport services must be ensured. Manufacturer: Meticube Software Engineering Meticube asserts that the significant characteristics and functionalities of the program include 2: - The possibility to load schedules of more than one transport operator. - Consultation of all arrival and departure schedules of CP trains, as well as their respective itineraries. - Consultation of last minute information, schedule alteration, new trains and circulation constraints. - Possibility to record search results in the mobile phone for a later offline consultation. - Ticketing via Internet. 1 2 Comboios De Portugal 2010, CP Mobile, Viewed 11.03.2010, < http://www.cp.pt>. CP Visual Identity: It is critical to discuss of visual identity of the The Portuguese national rail service provider simply known as CP. The graphics and branding represent an urban ecological conscious transport system. Through the simple use of the duality of green tones the website, mobile application and various publication material appears to advocate a green transport system that’s primary concern is simply the city and its people. Through advocating a positive public perception CP intend to ensure the success of the transport service as perhaps its users will be less critical when mishaps occur. CPs branding statement ‘CP.pt, on line with you’4 reinforces the notion of connection and concern for its commuters. It is unclear whether the city’s population favors public transport over the private use of cars however CP promotes sustainable mobility. CP is also invested in the culture of its urban environment hosting cultural and leisure events such as a photographic exhibition by Julio Silva.5 Exhibition by Julio Silva 20th-27th March 2010. ‘100th Anniversary of railway’s arrival in Vidago’. http://vidagoimagens.blogspot.com 4 5 Comboios De Portugal 2010, CP Mobile Application, Viewed 11.03.2010, < <http://m.cp.pt/>. Passengers can alter between the metro, international trains, interurban and urban trains, interurban and urban buses as well as private car, taxi and bicycle. Whilst every transport mode has an exclusive ticket there is also intermodal contactless smartcards. 1.LISBOA VIVA CARD This ‘smartcard’ contains an embedded chip and antenna. Without swiping the chip is read and the data validated through contactless entry points to the station. The system is check-in and check- out, meaning that the procedure used for entering the system is the same used to leave the system. Implemented: 2001. The Metropolitano de Lisboa installed a new ticketing and access control system to the city’s metro network, changing from an open access system to a closed one with control lines and access channels equipped with doors commanded by the reading and validation of the data stored in the tickets. 6 Lisboa Viva Card implemented 2001. 2.7 COLINAS CARD This smartcard is also embedded with contactless technology and also functions as a multimodal ticket. The card is intended for less frequent travellers. Implemented: 2004 7 Colinas Card implemented 2004. 6 Transport & Travel Research Ltd 2004, Urban Transport Benchmarking Initiative, Smart Cards in Lisbon – The Lisboa Viva Card and the 7 Colinas Card, p.1. Advantage/Disadvantages of Smartcards 7: Advantages: - Gated access to the metro system provides greater security and revenue protection. Efficient + faster ticketing Greater knowledge of origin-destination flows within the metro system Integrated ticketing Disadvantages: - Congestion at entrances and exits from underground stations, due to the introduction of validating machines Not every selling point is equipped with charging machines (user may have to go to other destinations to charge cards). Manufacturer: Link Consulting - www.link.pt The core of the system is the multi-operator Integrated Intermodal transport System (SIIT), a set of database applications developed by ‘Link Consulting’. This provides the management of ticketing products, cards, validation transactions and global security. 3.’TRANSPOR’: REAL-TIME INFORMATION SIIT is the Portuguese ‘System of Intermodal Information of Transport’. The integrated information about transport is available online and at real-time at www.transpor.pt.8 ‘TransPOR’ is described as ‘a multimodal transport information site’ 9, consisting of timetables, fares, routes, stops and transport operators. The information system is based on a Geographic Information System that enables the users to interactively act and visualise data. Further user information is also provided within the location of Gare do Oriente terminal via information panels, information desks and real-time electronic panels. The content of the information panels is represented as a floor plan, showing the location of the modes and facilities as well as the overall network design. There is also wireless networks that can be accessed on the train platforms. 7 Eltis: Carreno.M 2007, Smart Cards in Lisbon: the Lisboa Viva Card and the 7 Colinas Card (Portugal, viewed 11.03.2010, <http://www.eltis.org/study_sheet.phtml?study_id=1345>. 8 TransPOR 2010, About TransPOR, viewed 11.03.10,<http://www.transpor.pt/default.asp?HSPagina=Sobre&CdConteudo=13762>. 9 TransPOR 2010, About TransPOR, viewed 11.03.10,<http://www.transpor.pt/default.asp?HSPagina=Sobre&CdConteudo=13762>. TransPOR online Interface 2010 WEB REAL-TIME Implemented: 2004. Website interface updated 2008. Advantage/Disadvantages of TransPOR: Advantages: - Clear communication of all nodes of transport. Easy access via the web and through the use of integrated panels within the terminal Provides best solutions for commuters through the journey planner such as less changes, fastest option or most economic. Able to access Transpor from interactive Kiosks in main transport hubs such as Gare do Oriente, Lisbon; Lisbon Airport; Oporto Airport. Disadvantages: - Additional costs would be required to maintain the TransPOR website. Through greater public timetabling knowledge the reliability and efficiency of all transport services must be ensured.
