Baptism of the Lord
Bautismo del Señor
“You are my beloved Son; with you I am well
pleased.” These words of the Father to the Son are
heard after the descent of the Holy Spirit in the form
of the dove comes down from heaven show us the
intimate union of Love that is God. John the Baptist
prepared the way for this revelation to us by pointing
out that someone preaching after him will baptize with
the Holy Spirit. Of course he points to his cousin
Jesus as greater than him and the one coming after
him. But this brings us to two basic questions: Why
did Jesus need to get baptized by John if he is greater
than John? Why does Jesus need baptized for the
forgiveness of sins if he is sinless? Good questions.
First, John the Baptist prepares the people for
the public life of Jesus Christ. So therefore it seems
natural that Jesus would begin where John ends. John
is the end of the Old Covenant. In Jesus’ he fulfills
the Old Covenant and he begins the New Covenant for
the forgiveness of sins. This covenant is lived out in
the mission he gives to the apostles after the Resurrection to, “Go and baptize all nations!” Second, Jesus
receives baptism not for the forgiveness of his own sin
(of which he had none), but to purify the waters of
baptism for the rest of us so that we can receive
forgiveness from sins, especially Original Sin, in the
sacrament of baptism. Jesus empties himself in the
waters to fill us with eternal life so that as he is called
the Son by the Father so to may we be called sons and
daughters on the day of our baptism.
Baptism initiates us into a public Christian life.
At the beginning of our life as Christians God calls us
his children. Now let us follow Christ on his journey
to make disciples first of ourselves and others that they
too may be called children of God.

Juan el Bautista preparó el camino para que esta revelación

llamados hijos e hijas en el día de nuestro bautismo.
El bautismo nos inicia en una vida pública Cristiana. Al principio de nuestra vida como Cristianos Dios nos
llama a sus hijos. Ahora vamos a seguir a Cristo en su viaje
para hacer discípulos primeros de nosotros mismos y de los
demás para que también ellos sean llamados hijos de Dios.

OFFICE SCHEDULE
· If the Beaverton School District is delayed or closed, then the parish office will also be closed.
MASS SCHEDULE – Although it is very rare to cancel masses,
with severe weather this might happen.
· Fr. Jeff will decide if mass needs to be cancelled on Sunday.
· He will alert the parish administrative assistant, and secretary.
· The information will then be posted on the 503.649.9044 parish
office message line, stating that the mass has been cancelled.
· The information will also be posted to the parish website
seas-aloha.org, to the “News” section.

We need monetary help for the backpack
program. We fill 100 backpacks a week! It costs
$5.00 to $6.00 to fill each backpack. The money
donations are for the small size items that we buy in
bulk at super low prices so that your money goes
farther. Please adopt a backpack or two each month
to feed a hungry child.
WOMEN’S LENTEN RETREAT
Register now for “Opening our hearts to
the mercy of God”, a spiritual retreat,
sponsored by St. Pius X Women’s Club. All
women are cordially invited. February 26-27,
2016. Auxiliary Bishop Peter Smith of our
Archdiocese is the retreat master. Location
is Our Lady of Peace Retreat House. $85.00 for
retreat, 3 meals and lodging. No lodging
option: $55.00 for retreat, 3 meals.

Adapted Liturgy
You are invited on January 24 to the
St. Pius X Adapted Liturgy, a shorter Mass
that celebrates the lives and gifts of all people,
including those with physical and developmental
disabilities and illnesses. Every effort is made to
accommodate the inclusion and participation
of each person.
The church is accessible
for wheelchairs, and listening devices are
available. The Adapted Liturgy is offered the
4th Sunday of every month, except March 2016,
at 2:45 pm at St. Pius X, 1280 NW Saltzman Rd,
Portland, OR; call 503-644-5264 for more
information. Future dates are February 28 and
April 25. There is no Adapted Liturgy in March
of this year. All are welcome to this joyful
gathering!

Feed the Hungry
There are many people in this world who go without food. When so much of our food goes to waste, consider how good
stewardship practices of your own food habits can benefit others who do not have those same resources.

Give Drink to the Thirsty
Many of our brothers and sisters in Christ do not have access to clean water and suffer from the lack of this basic necessity. Support the efforts of those working towards greater accessibility of this essential resource.

Why?
January is "Poverty Awareness Month."

Serve
Give generously to our St. Vincent de Paul and/or Back Pack Program .
Farmers’ markets open in May; visit them and purchase food from local farmers.
Plant a (parish) community garden; donate its produce to your food pantry.
We take it for granted that we have access to clean water. Donate to Catholic Relief Services to help build wells for water
for those in need.
Fast from bottled water.
Fast from soda pop; drink water instead.


We need politicians “genuinely disturbed by the state of society, the people, the lives of the poor!”
Call your members of Congress and urge them to protect anti-poverty programs.
Educate yourself and others about the problem of hunger in the world; use your voice and your vote to petition and
pressure politicians to make the fight against world hunger a higher priority for our government.
Support clean water policies to ensure that there will be clean water for future generations.

Live
Try not to purchase more food than you are able to eat. If you notice that you end up throwing groceries away each week,
purchasing less groceries would eliminate waste and allow you to donate the savings to those in need.
Make an effort not to waste water. Remembering to turn off the water faucet when you are brushing your teeth or washing
dishes can help, especially in regions suffering from drought.
Contribute to the effort to preserve clean, fresh water: for example, by using environmentally friendly laundry detergents or
by trying to be moderate in the amount of water you put on your lawn.
Reflect and follow-up: The work of mercy isn't finished when the activity ends. Spend time in prayer, reflecting on where
you saw and experienced the love and mercy of Christ. If you did an activity with a group, follow-up with others in that
group and share insights or observations. This is a chance to grow in faith - and mercy! - together.
The focus of this month is feeding the hungry and giving drink to the thirsty, but there are opportunities to perform other
